8-cylinder Volvo XC90 set to arrive this year - - By JASON STEIN | Automotive News
An eight-cylinder version of the XC90 sport wagon will arrive this year, Volvo dealers said after their make meeting.
Also at the meeting, dealers said, Volvo executives detailed the company's involvement with auto racing and showed glimpses of the C50 retractable hardtop scheduled for 2005.

Notice that they are not referring to then engine's configuration, but I cant imagin it wont be anything else, other than a V config. The only other config that's possible is an inline config that Mercedes used to use and now uses only on semis in Europe, but I really doubt it will fit in the XC90.

Yamaha V8 for Volvo
Volvo plans to unveil the first V8 production model in its 77-year history at September’s Paris show. To improve competitiveness, especially in America, Volvo’s largest market, the range-topping XC90 and S80 get a new Yamaha-designed and built V8.
Autocar sources suggest it will be a 4.2-litre V8 developing 320bhp, making it more powerful than the existing top engine in both, the 270bhp turbocharged T6. The V8 will be mounted transversely only on all-wheel drive versions.
This is not the first time Volvo has planned a V8. The 90deg Douvrin V6 was intended to form the basis for a V8 in the early ’70s, but that plan was killed by the energy crisis. Cosworth developed a V8/V10 for Volvo in the ’90s but this engine, too, was shelved.

While Ford's Escape gets cleaner and more fuel-efficient, the company's Volvo brand is moving into V-8 engines to deliver smooth power to its big SUV, the XC90. Volvo CEO Vic Doolan confirms to USA Today that the brand will gain a V-8 engine for its sport-ute vehicle. The powerplant will be a 4.4-liter, 320-hp V-8 commissioned by the Swedish brand from Japanese engine and bike maker Yamaha. Models equipped with the new engine are expected to account for 10,000 to 12,000 sales yearly; the engine eventually will be added to other Volvo vehicles. It could arrive within a year, the paper reports.

September's Paris Motor Show will see Volvo unveil its first ever V8 engine fitted to a production model and display 2005 model year cars from the rest of the range.
The new V8 will be fitted to the Volvo XC90 SUV. Mated to a new 6 speed automatic gearbox, the 4.4 litre engine will deliver 315 bhp, accelerate from 0-62 mph in 7.0 secs and be the first V8 to meet the forthcoming Euro 5 requirements.
Volvo expects to sell 15,000 XC90 V8 models worldwide next year. Production starts in early 2005, but this new variant will not be available with right hand drive in the UK market.

I wonder if it gets better gas mileage than the turbo V6. A coworker has the V6 and he's getting about 12 miles per gallon freeway. Horrendous gas mileage. It's actually pretty common and not a defect for this model.

Should move pretty good with 4.4L Yamaha V8 with 315hp and 325lb-ft on hand. Of course, the last Yamaha V8 (in the Taurus SHO) has had it's fair share of problems.

Volvo has released image of its updated 2007 Volvo XC90. The SUV gets some minor exterior changes, with updated headlights and taillights. Body cladding has also been adjusted slightly, but only Volvo fans will notice. The interior has also been revised with improved materials for an increased sense of quality and luxury. Most notably, the XC90 line gains a new engine — the 3.2-liter naturally-aspirated inline-6 engine, which was recently premiered in the 2007 Volvo S80. The truck continues to be offered with a more powerful V8, as well.

In response to customer demand, Volvo Car Corporation is expanding the XC90 range with a new variant – the Volvo XC90 Sport. "We have had numerous requests for a sportier XC90," says Karin Falk, head of Special Vehicles at Volvo Cars. "They are from customers who appreciate the versatility and comfort of an SUV but who also want a bit more driving pleasure. We have developed the Volvo XC90 Sport especially for them, with a dynamic sport chassis, stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers, a sport-tuned, speed-dependent steering system, and larger, 19" wheels," she continues.
Sporty driving characteristics with a stiffened chassis
The Volvo XC90 Sport is not only sporty in aesthetic terms. The chassis characteristics have been refined to increase genuine driving pleasure. Both the shock absorbers and the anti-roll bars have been made stiffer to offer a high level of stability when cornering. The steering has also been adapted to offer quick steering response. Furthermore, Volvo's self-levelling system, Nivomat, is standard in both the five and seven seat models. The system has been fine-tuned to offer great stability and driving control.
"We dare to promise a truly enjoyable experience behind the wheel of a Volvo XC90 Sport," says Karin Falk. "The driving characteristics are of a calibre that few thought were possible in a Volvo SUV. And we have not had to compromise on riding comfort. We have succeeded in finding a balance between driving stability and the capacity to absorb unevenness in the road." The Volvo XC90 Sport will be launched with a colour that is unique for this XC90 variant, Passion Red, plus double chromed exhaust pipes and larger 19" alloy wheels – available in silver bright or diamond cut with contrasting effect. Wheel arch extenders in the body's colour help emphasize the large wheels particularly clearly.
Details and trim will have a satin silver finish rather than the standard chrome, and the lower skid plate is also in satin silver. The unique sill mouldings are in brushed stainless steel. To accentuate the car's sporty nature and create a sleeker appearance, it is not fitted with roof rails – although they will be available as an option for those customers who need them.
Sport décor and upholstery
The interior design is customized with a more sporty character with a sport steering wheel and gear selector of perforated leather plus sports seats with additional lateral cushioning to support the driver, even in faster cornering.
The leather in the seats is a combination of two different grades of leather which provide a sporty, exclusive feel. The décor piping in different colour shades also enhances the impression.

They should put the S60 T5's 257hp/258 lb-ft 2.4L motor into an S40R. As the current S40 T5 AWD (218hp/236 lb-ft) can post a 15-flat ET (trapping upper 90s) and tops out at ~150mph+, the extra 39hp/22lb-ft should make it fairly quick/fast.
