Sculpted to move you - first pictures of the all-new Volvo S60
Here are the first official pictures of the all-new Volvo S60 - sportier and more dynamic than any previous Volvo model.
"The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you. It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car's technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel," says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.
The Volvo S60 can be equipped with Pedestrian Detection - a groundbreaking safety feature that can detect pedestrians in front of the car and brake automatically if the driver does not react in time.
The all-new Volvo S60 is being unveiled to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in early March next year. Production of the sporty sedan model will start in early summer 2010 at the Volvo Cars plant in Ghent, Belgium.
"Customers in this segment want emotional appeal, sporty design and dynamic driving properties. The S60 has it all. We are convinced that it will be one of the strongest contenders around," says Stephen Odell.

the "E class" headlights look a little better in that angle.
but the front still looks too much like a malibu or something.
that said, volvo has come a long way since its box designs.

as a former architect and car designer, i must say volvo has the second best designs behind BMW (not including the exotics). im not saying volvo has the second best looking cars, i am saying they have the second best design team.
i could look at a volvo or BMW and understand the forms, precedents, etc. whereas most other car manufacturers are senseless, illogical and gimmicky. i.e. acura and especially infiniti.

Mercedes!? parts bin interior. simple surface flaming. zero form layering. the only style you could find is on vented bumper aero kits.
Audi is fantastic, however its a bit elementary compared to BMW. they have good interpretations, but lets face it, they are pretty limited by repeatedly using the form of a rounded square on every facet of the car (see an audi design board). their dashes also leave much too much junk space and arent spatially efficient. i.e. the dead space around the nav screen kills it.
you could find more automotive form juxtaposition on the hood/fender of a BMW than the entire exterior of a M.B. not too mention BMW is by far the best in keeping precedents in mind. New BMWs still show their inheritance.
BMW = art on wheels.
MB = sporty/trendy.

It looks gorgeous in black.
Definitely looks a lot better than the new E class sedan. What it needs now is a powerful engine to boot and it'll be a total winner.

I have to completely disagree with you. IMO the 1, current 3 sedan, X3, X6, first generation Z4, and E65/E66 7 series can be argued as the least attractive designs in BMW's history. There are just too many competing angles and creases that stop the flow of a given automobile without justification. Again this is just my opinion and I'm not saying I'm right and your wrong, just seeing things differently. That being said I love the design of the 3 coupe and X5.

i suppose the difference is that someone with a history in design/art could take a photo of a BMW and devise two dozen sketches on how the overall shape came to be. whereas the common consumer would look at it and say, "uhh, it looks hot in black."

i guess the avg joe cant truly appreciate it, or have a transparent eye on BMW form. ask a designer what they think of BMW.

It's "designer's" like you that give other artist a bad name. I work as a designer as well but unlike you I know that that one fact doesn't make my opinion any more valid then someone else's because automotive design isn't simple math, Its all subjective. What you consider juxtaposition I see as unnecessary conflict without reason. And thats fine, but calling people "avg joe" and "common consumer" is just an uncalled for. Get off your high horse because you don't deserve to have one in the first place. Its "designers" like YOU that give us the 4g TL and talk out your asses about how its a great design because "you know art, design, blah, blah, bs, etc. and we're all too stupid to know how great the ugly crap you designed up really is because we didn't take a class about Picasso back in art school." END RANT.

im not saying i think i know whats best for ppl. i am backing up the best selling luxury brand, BMW, in design. yes, it is subjective, but from what i stated about audi, merc, and BMW is a general consensus in the automotive design world. its not like i was pushing a minority vote.
if you saw my point, then you would know that certain cars (like the 4G TL) have little automotive inheritance, as its merely gimmicky design. we are actually in agreeance on that matter. im not favoring much of the trendy junk that companies are rolling out.

And there is no "general consensus in the automotive design world" that all BMW's are beautiful and the most attractive cars around. Don't make things up that you know you pulled out of your own ass.
