This is a very early prototype. So it makes sense. You should have seen the early prototype of the Volvo XC50 I saw. I better not post those. Talk about lego there.

Volvo C30/V30 News **Info (page 1)**

Volvo's Sporty Spice: Automaker planning smaller-than-S40 sports car - - By BOB GRITZINGER - - Source: Autoweek

It has been some time since we’ve heard anything about Volvo’s plans for a smaller-than-S40 sports car, but in a recent interview, Volvo Cars of North America CEO Vic Doolan promised just that.

“I think we have a very interesting car coming out at the end of next year,” says Doolan, who would only elaborate that the production car in question would be a sporty, front-wheel-drive car, and larger than a two-seater.

Most likely, Doolan is referring to this Mazda 3/Euro Focus/S40-derived model dubbed V30, which will probably arrive as a three-door hatchback powered by a turbo-charged I4 engine. Doolan also hints he would like to see a smaller version of the XC90, a more stylish and sporty five-seater with great performance. Could an XC30 be in our future?

This is going agains the 1-Series (if and when it comes here) and the Audi A3 and whatever Mercedes will bring here in that category (probably the B-Class). Nice move.

Apparently the latest vision from auto manufacturers is that there is room for small luxo hatchbacks in the USA market. I just cant see that much room personally. I see way too many offerings coming here.

Actually it does not look that bad but i am just not sure of the market for all these cars. I feel like they are all diluting their names. I hated the 318ti from bimmer. I hate that acura sells the RSX. Keep your luxury cars in the luxury market.

The RSX is in the luxury market. Compare that interior with the Civic Si interior. Which one looks better? The RSX is just compact and its sporty, yet still has luxury cues in its styling and design.

if RSX is a 'luxury' car, luxury has lost all meaning

those cars are miserable little pieces of crap. I got one for my loaner last time I went for service. It drove like shit and the interior was junkier than my friends cavalier.

sorry...just hate those cars.

Interior-wise, I'd probably prefer getting a Civic coupe with an aftermarket leather kit. I don't see how the RSX is luxurious in any way. The only reason to take it over a Civic is the engine and exterior styling.

Although I feel you're exaggerating above, I do believe that the RSX has no place in the Acura lineup. THe case has been so for at least 3 years now. I am sure we'll see changes in the next 3 years though.

honda should kill the SI hatchback, replace it with the RSX. Kill the TSX and replace it with a "acura-ified" accord coupe and call it the CL (of course).

oh, and redesign that damn hybrid, and call it the CRX

thats just my opinion

This is a real nice little hatch. I agree though, that there's some serious diluting of luxo brand here with all of these lower price and smaller and smaller offerings. And on this side thing going on, ditto with Chonation. Drop the RSX and TSX and just play in the $30K and above field.

A smaller Volvo is on the way soon, however. This will be called the C30, not H30 or V30 as we predicted, according to Autocar, as it is styled as a coupe rather than a hatchback or compact station wagon.

C30 is intended to take on the likes of the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf and, if it comes to Europe, the Saab 9-2X, and is expected to be unveiled in concept form at the Paris Motor Show this autumn. Clearly influenced by the SCC (Safety Concept Car) Volvo revealed in Detroit in 2001, and also reminiscent of this year's YCC, it is to be built on the next-generation Ford Focus platform, like the recently-launched V50 and S40. However, the transparent A-pillars of the concept car are unlikely to make it to production, as they are expensive to produce and it will be difficult to ensure that they meet all global crash-testing standards. C30 will come with a wide range of engines similar to those in the S40 and V50, with range-topping turbo-charged T5 versions; four-wheel drive may also be available.

Just when the VW Group thought it had the classy family hatchback market
sewn up, theres a new contender on the way from sweden. We have already
been
impressed by Volvo's S40 and V50 - but now there is another model to look
forward to: the V30

The pictures here are basedon information from within the company, and
provide the first glimpse of a car that will aim to tempt image-conscious
buyers away from established favourites such as Audi's A3 and the
Volkswagen
Golf. As Volvo's first small hatchback since the conservative 440 was
dropped back in 1997, the V30 would be joined by a sporty 3-door variant
which is expected to be called the S30.

The design shown here is far more muscular than the S40 saloon, and it
takes
its inspiration from the Safety Concept Car unveiled at the Detroit Motor
Show in 2001. There's also a passing resemblance to the 480 ES coupe.
Volvo
hinted at the possibility of a hatchback more recently with a range of
concept models displayed at last year's New York exhibition. As with its
stablemate, the V30 will be based on the Ford C1 platform, which underpins
the next-generation Focus. That means owners will reap the benefits of a
capable chassis, which could be set up to turn the all-new model into a
performance-orientated driver's car.

Volvo is expected to expand its R range of hot models with an S40 variant
next year, so enthusiasts shouldnt rule out the possibility of a hot hatch
based on the V30 in the future.

While there have been no official details released about the compact duo,
the maker is likely to unveil hatchback concepts at one of next years top
motor shows. That means customers shouldnt expect to see the new five-door
Volvo before the end of 2006.""

This premium sub-$30K segment is filling up quick. I think I the looks of the A3 better, but this is a very nice design.

I mean at this point, the term "premium" is expanding and changing. If so called "luxury" cars continue the downward expansion of their price range, the term luxury loses its initial meaning. A luxo car for $25K. OK, so when you have a Maxima at 32K, what's happening now? What should the customer think? I mean dont forget that Acura was probably the fist in that segment with the Integra, for years.

So what's happening is cars overall get better and better no matter where the price point. If the feel of an A3 is the same as that of an IS300 or a GS, then simply what's happening, all cars are getting to be better built and better equipped. What remaining variable/factor is the brand name and the experience at the dealer's.

New Volvo S60 spied - - Source: Autocar

...

More intriguing is the new C30. A premium hatch to rival the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series, the C30 takes Volvo into a lucrative new segment with chic styling queues from the 3CC concept car. Engine choices will include four- and five-cylinder petrol and diesel engines when the car goes on sale in the UK from early 2007, with prices in a similar range as the S40, starting at around £15,000.

Same here. Just based on looks, it kills the 1-Series, IMO. I like the A3 better, but this is very nicely done. Hopefully it stays true to the sketch.

Spy Shots: ’08 Volvo C30 - - by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image - - Source: The Car Connection

A lucky amateur spy in a small village in England managed to shoot the very first pictures showing two prototypes of the upcoming Volvo C30. The mysterious cars drove by just once and disappeared.

The C30 is a new model the size of the VW Golf, and is to be built on Ford's C1 global small-car platform, which is also being used for the Ford Focus, Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon, and Mazda3. The C30 will be about eight inches shorter than the S40 sedan. It is a three-door hatchback coupe, and its styling is derived from Volvo's Safety Concept Car, which itself is reminiscent of Volvo's famous 1800 ES wagon.

The C30's power is said to come from a twin-cam four-cylinder engine, although Volvo is also looking for hybrid powertrains. The C30 will become a competitor against cars like the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, and the Golf.

The new model will appear at the Paris auto show in the fall of 2006; production should begin late next summer at Ford's plant in Ghent, Belgium.

With its US unveiling set for the Detroit Auto Show, the newest, smallest Volvo — the C30 hatchback — will be the latest troop in a squad of premium hatchbacks hitting US shores, hoping to extend the market cracked by BMW’s Mini Cooper. Hatchbacks’ return is one of the surest of bets car watchers could make, with the C30 providing the all-important “third competitor” to the Mini and new Audi A3 (not to mention the enduring VW Golf), which some consider the tipping point for a car genre. Of course, in the spy photos, the disguised hatch makes it look like the erstwhile Golf cabrio, or an Isuzu Amigo.

Volvo hatches its latest model - - SOurce: Autocar

Volvo seems to have taken to scooping its own cars. This teaser shot of the forthcoming C30 appears on the company’s global website, where a spoof front-page newspaper story tells of a ‘three-door sporty design’ due at the end of 2006.

Expect a concept version of the new C30 three-door hatchback to appear at the Detroit show next month, borrowing heavily from the SCC and 3CC concept cars with what Volvo claims will be ‘an unparalleled level of occupant safety for this class of car’.

A production version of the C30 arrives late in 2006.

At the Detroit Motor Show in early January, Volvo Cars opens the door to the future. The Volvo C30 Design Concept provides an indication of what the new Volvo C30 will look like at its unveiling in Paris in September 2006. The Volvo C30 Design Concept is a sporty two-door, four-seater with a glass tailgate. The sleek, modern look is exhibited in a contrasting combination of two colours; Quite White and Very Bronze. The design clearly reflects several elements from the Volvo Safety Concept Car. "Our aim was to give the Volvo C30 Design Concept a hefty dose of muscles in a sporty and compact package," explains Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

ES-inspired tailgate

The dynamic front is characterised by the angled headlamps and the low, wide grille. Looking along the side, the well-defined wheel arches and the sloping roofline gives the car a fast silhouette, which is emphasized by the extreme boat shape of the glasshouse. The curvature of the rear shoulders is very pronounced and further enhanced by the horseshoe-shaped tail light pattern and the glass tailgate. "This exclusive and nimble glass tailgate is inspired both by the classic Volvo P1800 ES and the SCC concept car. The light pattern is so unusual that you'll never be in any doubt of which car you have in front of you," says Steve Mattin.

Full four seater

The interior reinforces the sporty character of the Volvo C30 Design Concept. The individual rear seats with generous legroom make the car a full four-seater. The rear seats are slightly centred, which gives the passengers an aura of space along with good visibility to the front. "The space between the seats also showcases Volvo's super-thin, visually floating centre stack, bringing it into full view from behind through the glass tailgate", says Steve Mattin.

Space for luggage - when necessary

The Volvo C30 Design Concept was designed for a customer category that mostly uses the front seats only. The luggage space behind the attractive glass tailgate is designed for everyday loads such as briefcases and sports equipment - with the ability to swallow far larger loads if one or both rear seats are folded flat.

World class audio system

A first-class audio system is an important part of the driving experience. That is why the Volvo C30 Design Concept has Volvo's Premium Sound system, with 5x130 W digital ICE Power amplifier from Alpine®, Dolby® Pro Logic II Surround and 10 loudspeakers from Dynaudio® of Denmark.

Five-cylinder turbo engine with 260 horsepower

Measuring 424 centimetres front to rear, the Volvo C30 Design Concept is no less than 23 centimetres shorter than the Volvo S40, but slightly wider (178 centimetres). Under the bonnet the Volvo C30 Design Concept has an in-line five-cylinder 2.4-litre turbocharged engine. It gives the driver 260 horsepower at 5500 revs a minute and maximum torque of 350 Nm between 2100 and 5000 revs. The car is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox. The Volvo C30 Design Concept accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Keeps its promises

The 19-inch aluminium wheels have Pirelli Corsa 225/35 R19 tyres. There are four-pot brakes from Brembo with aluminium callipers and 330 millimetres ventilated brake discs both front and rear. "Sporty driving characteristics are a must to attract this customer category. A car that radiates muscular agility has to live up to its appearance once you slip behind the steering wheel," says Håkan Abrahamsson, the C30 Project Director.

Targeting dynamic customers with a hectic urban lifestyle

With the new Volvo C30 Design Concept, Volvo Cars gives the world a taste of the C30 Project - which has its sights set on giving a young, dynamic customer group its "own" Volvo.

"We know there are large numbers of fairly young, successful people who are attracted by our brand, but who still cannot find a model in our range that exactly matches their taste and lifestyle. The Volvo C30 Design Concept was developed precisely for this group," says Fredrik Arp, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

During the evolution of the C30 Project, Volvo Cars organized customer clinics in several European countries. Young urbanites with accelerating careers and an intensive lifestyle were invited to give their views on the car's design and technical content.

For an active life in the city

Volvo focused primarily on singles and on couples without children, who regard the car as a tool for pursuing their hectic lifestyles. When they buy clothes, decorate their homes or purchase home electronics, design and brand name are particularly important factors - and they choose their cars according to the same criteria. "These customers move in a fast pace between home, work, meetings, the gym and their favourite restaurants and nightclubs in town. Many of them describe their ideal car as a runabout - a nimble car to get them where they want to go. They focus on attractive design and entertaining driving properties and rarely go more than two people in the car," explains Håkan Abrahamsson, C30 Project Director.

Design inspiration from the SCC

The customer clinics confirmed that Volvo had chosen the right path. A sporty design with two doors, four individual seats and lines inspired by the Volvo Safety Concept Car, makes the forthcoming production model a keen contender in a segment where competition for customers is razor-sharp.

"At the Milan clinic, one of the participants said: 'At long last an exciting new challenger in the segment, probably my first Volvo.' It's an excellent reflection of our ambition for the C30 project," says Håkan Abrahamsson.

Unveiling in Paris in 2006

The Volvo C30 Design Concept, which is being shown at the Detroit Motor Show, offers a taste of what's to come in the forthcoming production model. The wraps will come off the new Volvo C30 at the Paris motor show in September 2006, and the car will be successively introduced throughout the world starting at the end of the year.

"The Volvo C30 plays an important role in the hunt for sales growth to 600,000 cars a year. It is vital that we broaden our model range so that customers with an active urban lifestyle can choose a Volvo with the right appeal as early as possible," says Fredrik Arp.
