Fuel economy is a funny thing. In Europe, better efficiency has always boiled down to two simple concepts: diesel fuel and turbos. But like the 35-year-old who won't drink tequila because of a bad experience in college, American buyers' stomachs start turning whenever manufacturers talk about oil-burners – clean or otherwise. That's a problem for carmakers like Volkswagen. You see, the company can build an arsenal of clean diesel vehicles that have no problem turning out excellent fuel-economy numbers without the weight, complexity or burden of lugging around a partially electric drivetrain, but that doesn't mean Americans will buy them. Nope. On this side of the pond, fuel efficiency translates into just one word: hybrid.

And that's exactly why Volkswagen has taken to electrifying its beefy 2011 Touareg, the very first production hybrid in the company's history. Volkswagen has made no secret of the fact that it plans to be the world's number one automaker, and that part of its plan for global domination involves broadening its appeal in the still-juicy American market. If you were wondering exactly what that meant for the company's lineup on our side of the world, wonder no more. We're living in the future, and it's a place stocked with a blazingly-quick, fully capable and quasi-efficient SUV from Germany with love.

The hybrid market seems to be split into 2 very different design camps: those that look like the latest running shoes from the year 2275 and those that don't. The Touareg Hybrid falls into the latter category, opting for discrete hybrid badges nestled in the grille and stuck to the flanks of the already attractive and newly redesigned standard Touareg body, instead of a German take on the future of footwear.

We couldn't be happier about this decision.

Up front, the Touareg Hybrid wears its new corporate nose with pride. The headlights are now bedazzled with LED daytime running lights and the sleek grille is bolstered by large air intakes set low in the front fascia. The look is both handsome and just a touch aggressive, befitting a vehicle capable of picking up its skirt and hustling to 60 mph in a scant 6.2 seconds. The vehicle's profile doesn't exactly shatter any SUV molds, but its rear benefits from a set of pronounced haunches that give the Touareg Hybrid some additional flair.

Volkswagen says that it only plans to sell the Touareg Hybrid in one trim – fully loaded. In an effort to make things easier for both dealers and buyers, the company has slimmed its ordering structure from over 400 available variants of the Touareg last year to just over 40 possible combinations for 2011. Part of that effort means the decision makers at VW came to the conclusion that most buyers would want their high-rider with all the fixins, so you can forget about getting a stripper model with a lower price tag.

That's probably just as well, because this machine isn't your typical eco-warrior. Inside, buyers are treated to power leather thrones that are fully adjustable and boast a memory function for up to three pilots, and the dash is dominated by a large, full-color LCD touch-screen. Navigation, entertainment and the rearview camera are all accessed through the screen. Attractive wood trim accents are camped out along the dash and door panels, and help give the cabin a little extra touch of class.

But it's the back seats that are really impressive. The rear bench is fully adjustable, sliding forward and aft enough to make room for long-legged passengers or any rear cargo that may require an extra touch of space. Likewise, the seats can be quickly folded for plenty of additional storage room. As an option on all Touareg models, Volkswagen is offering an expansive panoramic sunroof that the company says is a full 350% larger than the piece found in the previous model. The glass does plenty to brighten up the rear of the cabin.

Volkswagen seems to have plenty of faith in the company's turn-by-turn navigation system. We were unleashed on the unsuspecting countryside surrounding Nice, France with nothing more than the sternly feminine voice of the nav to guide us via a series of way points. Despite twisting roads and tight city avenues, the system never led us astray. If we missed a turn, it was quick to recalculate to find the best route ahead.

By and large, the cabin is logically laid out, though we were frustrated to find that the adjustment for the side-view mirrors is mounted flush on the driver's side door. It takes a second or two to translate the forward/backward control knob with the left/right movement of the mirror. Otherwise, the only complaint that we could drum up after a few hours in the cabin is the fact that the air-conditioning in the Touareg Hybrid doesn't always seem up to the task of cooling the interior, especially at low speeds in direct sunlight.

Cabin qualms aside, the drivetrain in the 2011 Touareg hybrid is nothing short of engineering wizardry. If you're familiar with the equipment on board the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, you won't find too many surprises here. A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, though a parallel electric motor throws in a little extra oomph for a combined punch of 380 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Behind the engine and motor sits an 8-speed automatic transmission that puts power to all 4 wheels via the company's all-wheel-drive system and a new Torsen rear differential.

Like the Cayenne, the best part of this combination is the fact that the engine is separated from the transmission via a decoupling clutch that will allow the vehicle to coast at speeds well above the posted limit with the gasoline engine completely off. Volkswagen calls this "sailing," and it comes in handy on hilly terrain with extended downward grades. The trick helps the Touareg Hybrid return a projected 25 mpg city and 21 mpg highway – numbers that are a little higher than the 18.4 mpg combined we saw during our time behind the wheel. Still, they aren't bad for an SUV that still packs a full 7,700 lb towing capacity – exactly the same as both the diesel and gasoline versions.

Power for the 47-hp electric motor is stored in a sizable 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery stored under the rear cargo area. A total of 240 cells are on hand to store juice for later, and Volkswagen has integrated a special aluminum crash box around the cells to protect the battery pack in the event of an accident. In order to keep things cool, the Touareg Hybrid draws cold air from the cabin and spits air heated by the batteries to the exterior of the vehicle.

There's no getting around just how heavy this vehicle feels, even compared to its super-sized brethren. The Touareg Hybrid comes in at 5,135 lbs – a full 424 lbs heavier than the standard 3.6-liter gasoline V6 version and 261 lbs pudgier than the oil-burning Touareg. As such, you won't be flinging this machine through any winding mountain passes anytime soon. The weight does have the benefit of giving the Touareg Hybrid a slightly softer ride compared to its siblings, something that we're sure American buyers will appreciate. Otherwise, the SUV feels like a more refined evolution of the high-riding set. Despite its girth, you aren't beaten over the head with a sense of top heaviness. Instead, you simply can't help but feel that the tires are sweating bullets when the tarmac goes twisted.

When things straighten out, however, you're rewarded with the surprising kind of acceleration that only 428 lb-ft of torque can present. It feels like a well-fed fraulein has decided to have a seat on your chest. Unfortunately, for all of the giggles that the skinny pedal can induce, the brakes on the Touareg Hybrid are downright unnerving. While it takes half a second for the supercharged 6 and the electric motor to shrug off two and a half tons of German luxury, the brake pedal will bring the whole game show to a stop at the first hint of contact with your leather-soled penny loafers. Be warned: these stoppers are the sensitive kind. The Touareg Hybrid's regenerative braking system is likely to blame, as it's taken many generations of hybrids for other manufacturers to get the balance of regen and actual braking to feel natural and not unnerving. Volkswagen's sort of new at this whole hybrid thing.

The company hasn't said exactly how much it's planning to charge for the 2011 Touareg Hybrid, but we can guess that the figure isn't going to be for the faint of heart. We expect the fully-loaded, electrified SUV to hit the wallet north of the $44,350 price tag on the current TDI Touareg. The thing is, the diesel version boasts a combined fuel economy of just 1 mpg less than the projected figures of the hybrid. We're guessing that in real-world conditions, the diesel would likely even edge ahead of its battery-operated counterpart if you spent more time plying the highways.

When the Touareg Hybrid lands in the States later this year, we're guessing it will find favor with the crowd that's less interested in which is the better product – the hybrid or the diesel Touareg – and more concerned with the image those tiny hybrid badges put forth. With identical towing capacities, nearly identical fuel economy figures and the fact that the Touareg Hybrid requires premium gasoline, both it and the Touareg TDI are simply different answers to the same question. We're more inclined to stick with the lighter TDI with its more progressive brake system, but we know we don't represent the vast majority of SUV buyers, either.

It's too bad most Americans are idiots, I'd much rather a diesel engine in my car than a hybrid, but alas money speaks and I don't have any so no one cares about my opinion.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg Gold Edition

Press release...

At the first Qatar Motor Show (26 - 29 January), Volkswagen is presenting two exclusive SUV concept cars for the first time. The common denominator of these all-wheel drive vehicles: No compromises! Show car number 1 is a slightly tamer version of the Touareg 3 that started in the Dakar Rally at the beginning of January; this 228 kW / 310 PS Volkswagen could very well be the world’s most talented street-legal SUV. Show car number 2 is the Touareg Gold Edition - many of its parts have been upgraded with 24-carat gold; this 265 kW Volkswagen (360 PS) is debuting as one of the highest quality SUVs ever. The cost of these concept cars? Priceless. Yet...

Touareg Gold Edition

The Touareg Gold Edition would certainly be able to handle a journey around the world – but bear in mind, this car should only be parked where there is good surveillance. That is because – living up its name - certain areas of this SUV are upgraded with 24-carat gold. On the outside, they include the custom designed 22-inch wheels, roof rails, protective guard strips and window frames, mirror caps and parts of the air intake frame, "Touareg V8" signature and boot sill trim. Like the Race Touareg 3 Qatar, this SUV is also painted in "Magic Morning" body colour.

Inside, 24-carat gold also adorns many of the car’s accents and switches, making the entire car unique. The interior design itself has a pleasant, bright appearance in the "Luna" trim colour. The Alcantara roofliner shows this colour as does the Nappa leather of the seats, which is decorated with ornamental stitch detailing.

On the other hand, the dashboard is trimmed in a natural brown leather; contrasting seams in "Magnolia" colour perfect the colour scheme. Natural brown with leather inserts in "Luna" adorn the floor mats. Automotive craftsmanship at its finest is reflected in the Walnut Burr accents with genuine gold marquetry – also crafted into an ornamental pattern. This is in keeping with the general image of the Touareg, which – in the "normal" production version – is one of the most sophisticated SUVs in the world.

You guys are nuts. I'm going to partially shave my head so it looks like I have male pattern balding, then get a big gold chain and a cigar. Then I'll get a Hawaiian shirt, leave the top 3-4 buttons unbuttoned, then trim some of my pubes and glue them to my upper chest to complete the look (I don't have much hair on my chest)

Bitches is gonna be all over me, brah

Post 2013 Volkswagen Touareg Edition X

Press release...

A decade ago, the Touareg celebrated its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show and since then has been providing off-road competence of the highest level. Volkswagen is now dedicating a new special model to this era of success, the Touareg Edition X, which with numerous exclusive features will satisfy the even most demanding of expectations.

The new Touareg Edition X runs as standard on 19-inch ‘Moab’ alloy wheels and, combined with the Moonlight Blue Pearl Effect exterior paint, available as an option, offers a stylish level of specification. A large panoramic slide/tilt sunroof, silver anodised roof rails, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and darkened rear light clusters in LED technology complete the look of this striking off-roader. In addition, the ‘Chrome & Style’ designer pack, tinted side and rear windows and ‘Touareg X’ logos on the wings are also included in the package.

The first-class specification carries on inside as well. The Touareg Edition X has, for example, exclusive Nappa leather trim in amber brown with a new style of braid embossed finish. On top of this come decorative inlays in real ebony for doors and instrument panel, plus illuminated front door sills with ‘Touareg X’ lettering. The package is rounded off with colour-coordinated decorative stitching on the leather steering wheel, gear lever gaiter and fabric floor mats.

The Touareg Edition X can be ordered now with a choice of five engine/gearbox combinations, including a hybrid version. Prices begin at €61,025 for the V6 TDI BlueMotion Technology 150 kW / 204 PS with 8-speed automatic transmission.

https://www.topgear.com/car-news/suv...swagen-touareg

VW's flagship SUV enters its third generation. It's huge, and it's posh. Here's how

Just in case we weren’t already spoilt for large luxury SUVs, VW has added another. This time its new flagship – the third-generation Touareg – based round the same aluminium and steel modular architecture and box of bits as the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7. This bodes well.

Smart, isn’t it? Albeit in the slightly humourless, starched-collar way all modern VWs are. But the design’s not entirely without talking points – just look at the way the new IQ Light LED matrix headlights blend into one with the grille. Yep, that’s a first. Then there’s the way the crease above the door handles flares over the rear wheel arch… nice touch.

But the real advances are inside. That’s where you find the new ‘fully digitised Innovision Cockpit’, or as you and I would call it two enormous screens stitched together to look like one big one, with a notable absence of buttons. Nevertheless, VW is proud of the way the 12-inch digital instrument panel flows neatly into the 15-inch central screen, and it does look thoroughly modern, minimalist and has the tech artillery to back it up.

These include: ‘Night Vision’ to detect (and hopefully avoid) humans and animals in darkness via a thermal imaging camera; Roadwork Lane Assist, to steer, brake and accelerate for you up to 37mph; four-wheel steering to make it feel nimbler than it actually is; active roll stabilisation, to magically reduce body roll, and a head-up display projected directly onto the windscreen. So far, so VW.

And then there’s the size. This new model is longer, wider and lower than the old one, so its stance is meaner, and there’s more space inside for people and things. Keep the rear bench in place and there’s 810-litres of luggage room, up from 697-litres before. Handy for all your windsurfing kit and parachute equipment if you’re one of the “sporty, active people” VW insists buy the Touareg.

To begin with, a 362bhp plug-in hybrid version will only be offered in China – the Touareg’s most important market – although it’s fairly inconceivable that it won’t be offered in Europe at some point down the line. For now, we’ll have to make do with a pair of V6 diesels producing either 228bhp or 282bhp… fine by us. Later a 335bhp V6 petrol will be added… even finer by us.

So what do we think? Has VW upset the apple cart and outdone its posher siblings, or is the this new Touareg a move upmarket too far? Thoughts on a digital postcard below.

I’m beyond dissapointed that the third generation touareg won’t be coming to North America. Yes it was an expensive VW starting at 50k, but it topped out at 70k whereas a Jeep GC tops out at over 100k now and sorry but the Touareg has a MUCH more sophisticated and upscale lineage. It failed for 3 main reasons.

VW had ZERO markting for the Touareg and almost nobody even knew it existed. All the commecials for VW cars (even those showing “all” the models) showed everything under the Touareg and never the Touareg. 70k sounds like a lot for a VW but when you compare that to the Cayenne, Q7, Urus!!!/Bentayga!!! prices it is actually a bargain.

The other reason it was a failure was that VW decontented it for WAY too long. In 2004 it was WAY ahead of the competition. It had things like full air suspension, adaptive dampeners, smart key, basically anything you could get on a BMW X5 or Cayenne and then some. It was very technologically advanced. The 1G model moved through to 2010 and had a major refresh in 2008 that kept it competitive but it was starting to fall back here. In comes the 2G 2011 Touareg and VW was on a rabid decontenting spree. No more air suspension, no more V8 engines, no more quality materials. To get things like heated steering wheel, smart key with push button start, and the upgraded dynaudio stereo from a chintzy tin can sound system you had to opt for the 70k model. In 2011 you had the Jeep GC come out and absolutely blow the class up. You could get cooled seats, air suspension, locking diffs, adaptive cruise/blind spot detection, leather covered dash and upper door and people were like Touareg what? (at least those who knew what it was). Finally in 2016 could you get cooled seats, around view cam, active safety tech, 14 way seats...etc but it was FAR too late at this point.

Then the final nail in the coffin was dieselgate. 2/3 of Touaregs sold are diesel models. You can see why VW decided to drop the Touareg as with no diesel anymore there was no point to bring it to North-America anymore.

The Atlas (while very roomy and built to be super utilitarian) can’t hold a candle to the Touareg. Build quality is way way way below the Touaregs and offroad capability is also way below the Touareg. Sadly VW is going to sell a short wheelbase atlas here that will fill the Touareg sized hole. What a shame.

What's the point of importing the Touraeg when they already offer the Q5/SQ5 through the Audi brand? The vehicle class, price range, and content are almost a complete replication.

This year’s Geneva Motor Show was pretty much all about hybrid and electric cars, which is why it was surprising that Volkswagen showed up with a giant Touareg with a diesel V8, and called it the last V8 diesel they’d likely ever produce.I shouldn’t have to work too hard to spell out the irony of Volkswagen, the company initially wrapped up by the Dieselgate diesel emissions cheating scandal, bringing a diesel V8 to a European car show where everyone else has seemingly moved on to what’s next.

Top Gear caught up with Jurgen Stackmann, head of marketing for VW, to ask how the company managed to produce a 419 horsepower, 664 lb-ft of torque diesel V8 crossover after a scandal that forced it to invest billions in a future electric lineup and electric-charging infrastructure.

Here’s the quote from Top Gear:

He laughs heartily. “I love it actually. It’s such a statement, for Volkswagen!”

But why a Touareg? Surely a Porsche Cayenne S Diesel makes more sense, as Porsche is, well, better known for fast cars?

“We had a long debate, and we believe Touareg is a prime car. It can handle any competitor from around the world. Giving it a V8 twist is a very special honour, and I believe it’s going to be a collector’s car, from day one.”

Hardly a Porsche 911 R or LaFerrari, is it? But Stackmann is resolute in his belief that what the world needs now is V8 Touareg diesel, sweet V8 diesel.

“I’ve met a lot of Touareg V10 TDI customers, and those that have one will never sell it. It’ll be the same idea with the V8. It’s for those customers who want something very special, and they’ll get it.

“Most likely, it’ll be the last V8 diesel car you’ll see.”
Well, it’ll be the last V8 diesel that Europe sees, as there’s no chance it would come to the U.S. Stackmann also clarified that the V8 won’t find its way into any other cars, so the Touareg is it.

The big diesel crossover should fit nicely in the company’s eclectic lineage of weird, anonymous, big-engined powerful models, like the Touareg V10 TDI and W12 Phaeton. Who doesn’t love a car with heaps of power and just a little bit of spite.
