...and even if you buy the Mexico argument.....VW has been mfg. cars in Mexico since the 1960's.

Not to mention all the other car companies of the world that build cars in Mexico.....I guess the logic is that any car built in Mexico is garbage....well that leaves very few car mfg. in the world that are not garbage.

Let's see in car factories in Mexico : Toyota, Nissan, Honda, BMW, VW, GM, Ford, Mercedes Benz........and more...Clearly all trash.

prior to picking up the Avant, my best friend kept insisting that buying the A3 was a bad idea, solely because it's built in Mexico.

I doubt the credit crunch will be any kinder to VW than any of the other somewhat well-run automakers in 09. The auto sector seems like a really dicey place to have money right now.

VW to overtake GM as world’s second largest automaker

General Motors has barely had enough time to settle into its new position as the world’s second largest automaker by volume, but it looks as though the U.S.’ largest automaker will be slipping yet another spot. Following Toyota’s ousting of General Motors from the world’s top spot last year – a position GM had held for the previous 76 years – Volkswagen will likely take over as the world’s second largest automaker by year’s end.

According to R.L. Polk Germany, VW is poised to take over as the world’s second largest automaker this year, knocking GM down to the number three position.

Global new car sales are expected to fall by 19 percent this year – totaling just 52.8 million units — with GM expected to bear more of that burden than VW. Because of GM’s exposure to the U.S. market – which is down more than 34 percent on the year, according to Automotive News – analysts expect GM’s production to decrease by 31 percent in 2009. However, VW’s is much less susceptible to fluctuations in the U.S. market, resulting in a predicted 15 percent decline in new vehicle production this year. As a result, VW will pass GM to become the world’s second largest automaker.

VW has vowed to take over the number one spot from Toyota by early next decade, and it looks as though the German automaker might be on track to achieve that goal. Just last year VW displaced Ford as the world’s third largest automaker.

Next you're going to tell me the world is round or some crap like that.

Last I checked the world is flat. :twocents:

http://www.amazon.com/World-Flat-3-0...9061240&sr=8-1

And I'm not surprised VW has moved up further to the 2nd spot. With the "no longer" big three failing for as long as they have it was only a matter of time that this would happen.

Where is honda in all of this though, where are they ranked?

In my book VW is already world No1 auto maker. It has the highest profits, biggest market cap and No 1. Luxury Brand Audi. and all these without major exposure to North American market. let see when VW factory opens up in Tennesse. It will make Toyota/Honda cry.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Achieves New Record Values in Sales, Turnover and Profits in 2008

Thus Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was able to increase its lead in the European market. “With a total of more than 332,000 unit sales, we have successfully defended our ‘title’ as European champions and have pulled even further away from the runners-up”, Schaller pointed out. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles share of the European market in 2008 was up 0.4 percent, at 15 percent

Volkswagen is now #1..the world's largest automaker..passing Toyota?

Volkswagen has set the goal of overtaking Toyota as the world’s largest automaker by 2018, but it doesn’t look as though the German automaker will have to wait that long. If early reports are correct, VW may have overtaken Toyota as the largest automaker in the first quarter of 2009.

Although VW’s sales were down 11.4 percent in the first quarter, the German automaker saw some strong sales gains in key markets like Germany, Brazil and China. On the other hand, Toyota’s Q1 sales are expected to be down more than 40 percent, with a significant portion of those losses coming from key markets such as the United States and Japan.

In all, VW sold 1.39 million vehicles in the first quarter. According to Reuters, Toyota’s first quarter sales will slip 47 percent to 1.23 million units. Toyota isn’t expected to post its official Q1 results until next week.

If those results hold true, VW can thank scrappage incentive in Germany, Brazil and China – three markets that make up more than 40 percent of VW’s sales — for the number one spot. Government programs in those three regions have spiked consumer demand for new cars, with VW taking better advantage than Toyota.

Although the results are not yet official, it looks as though VW will steal the crown as world’s largest automaker for the first quarter of ’09. However, industry experts expect the race to be tight all year long, meaning VW could still be sitting on top by year’s end.
