could do well in asian markets - the kingdom of affordable businessman-haulers.

it COULD sell, just not in the US...it would be an ignorant comment to say that VW doesnt know how to market cars, wtf do we know...lets see where this will be released. there are profits to had...somewhere...

He doesn't like the car.

It's not the first time someone (you included) has said a car is "fail". How is that an insult to anyone...?

The car in some ways is failing VW because it's sales are underwhelming...and it does sort of eat into the A8's market, which is a bit strange. Still, it's not a bad vehicle overall with such impressive features; it's not bad looking either (I wouldn't be jumping up and down all giddy for it's look tho)...but, that's my opinion.

it must have hurt his feelings....

anyways..all the jokes aside, i'm not into these HUGE super size vehicles... i think M, GS, A6 size would be the biggest i could ever go unless i become some executives in the later years (even then, unless i'm in Korea, i won't have a dedicated driver, so i'd prefer more of sportier rides than these)..

given that, i don't see this vehicle that much appealing for my taste..
hence, ↓

You miss the point of why I called him a tool.

To throw out "FAIL"...and then when asked why it is a FAIL he went MIA. He said he was "having fun with the story"....so yea...I think he was being a complete tool.

I don't care if you like a car or not. We all have opinions
Luv called it a FAIL...and she gave her opinion why...I can respect that.

I saw a Phaeton about 2 days ago... I didn't realize they were trying to make a comeback... I always thought they were unique, huge, cars and rare too... I would buy an Audi A8 1st, just because I think they have a better looking interior and still ooze that huge car feel!

While I don't see the point of this car. If they aren't losing any money on it then good on them for offering it.

Certainly looks good. Better than the A8 IMO.

Anyone see the the show on Discovery where they tour the plant where these are made? Incredible.

Grow up, man! I'm a 36 y/o married man with 3 kids, (and a full-time job, I may add!). If you think I'm gonna get on this site and bicker back and forth with you........sorry to disappoint you.

Anyways, what I meant was, VW(group) got the A8, and they tried already with the phaeton. It didn't work. This 'new' one looks almost exactly the same, to me!

No matter how good I think the interior looks(and I do like interior), I still think it won't do that good, sales wise!

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it, lol!

The same way I felt about the '09 RL compare to the '05-'08! ....the Honda/Acura fanatic that I am, lol!

Lighten up already! Geeez!!!

It looks way too much like the Skoda Superb..even Europeans will be puzzled, I love the Phaeton, but at this point the styling is just too bland and generic..it needs a complete makeover

I didn't think it was possible, but that car's proportions are so ugly.

I don't see the similarity aside from the fact that they're both cars.

Next-gen VW Phaeton confirmed for 2015 U.S. debut

Ulrich Hackenberg, Volkswagen's chief of research and development, has confirmed that the next-gen Phaeton will be offered in the United States shortly after it debuts in Europe.

The next Phaeton will ride on the same platform as the upcoming Audi A8 and it will be largely built out of aluminum in order to shed as much weight as possible. The car will also grow a little, with the short-wheelbase variant expected to stretch no less than 196 inches long.

To increase the behemoth's green credentials, Volkswagen will drop big displacement engines in favor of smaller ones equipped with several turbochargers. Rumors claim that a plug-in hybrid drivetrain will be offered to further reduce emissions but the German automaker has yet to confirm this.

Like the current model, the next Phaeton will be aimed at a low-key target audience.

"The new one will have the same positioning [as the old one]: a straightforward sedan for the person who's successful but doesn't feel the need to show it. Volkswagen doesn't change course between generations of a car. It's always easier to keep the customers you have than to lose them and go find new ones," explained a company insider in an interview with German magazine Auto, Motor Und Sport.

The next-gen Phaeton will reportedly hit U.S. showrooms in about 2015.

With all of VW's huge success in NA, you knew it was only a matter of time before the Phaeton returned.

Isn't the Phaeton the only flagship to sell worse than the RL?

As an aside, WTF happened to the new A8? The D2 & D3 were sweet but I was driving behind a new A8 and thought it was an A4 until I was within tailgating distance.

An update from here: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...um-body-report

2006 Volkswagen Phaeton2006 Volkswagen PhaetonTalk of the return of the Volkswagen Phaeton to U.S. shores dates back almost as far as the car’s exit in 2006. Most recently it was reported that a concept previewing the next-generation Phaeton, due out in the next year or two, was scheduled to be revealed at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show earlier this month.

No Phaeton concept was shown, but that doesn’t mean VW isn’t planning a new version of its flagship for the U.S. market. According to Car and Driver, VW had a concept ready for the Detroit show but pulled it at the last minute because the production version of the car was still too far away.

VW is working hard to ensure the second launch of its Phaeton isn’t a failure. Some of the measures its taking are said to include an aluminum body to help shed weight, increased dimensions to boost interior space, and the use of the latest infotainment technology.

Downsized engines are also likely, instead of the fuel-hungry V-10s and W-12s of previous versions, and expect to see plug-in hybrid technology used as well.

VW previously admitted that the Phaeton was generally unsuccessful due to a number of shortcomings, including problems with initial quality and bland styling. The automaker is convinced it’s learned the lessons from that failure and is ready to try again. We’ll just have to wait and see.

If VW had built the car with decent quality, I think it would have done okay. But it was built by drunk and blind six-year olds.

It was largely electrics ... Shocking, I know.

I don't think it was an A8 platform. I think it was wholly separate. But at least VW commoditized it and used it on the Bentley Continental.

It used the D1 platform. I just looked it up and the VW D1 platform that Bentley and the Phaeton use are separate (still) from the Audi D2/D3/D4 platforms.

Look, I shouldn't have called it a failure. Just because a car sells poorly doesn't mean it isn't any good. If all we did in cars was sit in them, inspect the build quality, and stroke the dash the Phaeton would be perfect. But we have to drive them, and the truth is it was unreliable with a humongous turn radius and didn't look like a $100k car.

It had 4Motion. Just think for a second. You are actually trying to convince us that VW put a 6L V12 in a FWD car.

I said based. Do you know what based means?

It is the same way an MDX is AWD with a FWD based platform.

The platform was designed from new for the Phaeton and later the Bentleys. Not a single car that uses the platform is FWD.

But yeah, it's based on a FWD platform.

4MOTION is Volkswagen’s permanent four-wheel drive system.
The 4MOTION permanent four-wheel drive system from Volkswagen distributes the engine’s power to all four wheels as required.
On models where the engine is installed longitudinally, a Torsen differential splits the drive force between the front and rear axles.
Can ya'll please stfu now?

I'll give you a tip.

When you want to see the crème de la crème you always go straight to the home country.
Here:
http://www.volkswagen.de/de/models/phaeton.html

Looks like a Passat but still very distinctive on the road, sat in one and it's a great car.

Yes. It's the same for people who buy a Toyota Land Cruiser over a Lexus LX570. The LC starts at 79K, the LX570 starts at 83K. Not that huge of a difference in price.

Even if the Phaeton has build quality and reliability as good as the Audi's, everyone would still think that the VW Phaeton is still as poor as the typical VW vehicles.

VW Phaeton = sure failure
Audi Phaeton = may success
