I wonder what resale is like on one of these now. It's like the Q45, a perfectly good full size luxury car that never caught on which can be had for huge discounts.

Facelifted Phaeton - - Text: Automedia / Photos: Automedia 30th October 2006 - - Source: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/203457/vw_phaeton.html
Volkswagen is planning to introduce a slight facelift for the Phaeton next year and hence ensure sales until the new model will arrive in 2009. Main modifications will be the re designed front grille – reminding of that of the Passat, Polo and Golf GTI – a modified front bumper and a more sculpted bonnet as a tribute to enhanced pedestrian protection. Also new will be curve-light and a DVD navigation system replacing the old-fashioned CD technology.
When the all-new model arrives here in 2009, it is believed to be more coupé-like than today’s Phaeton and is said to be positioned half a class below the Audi A8 but still well ahead of the Passat.

I'm not really a badge-oriented person; I would buy a $80,000 Honda (NSX) anyday, if I had the money.
But this... no way. It looks ugly. Audi or Bentley or not, there's a reason why the Phaeton isn't selling. part is because its a VW, but its such a bland design.

Thought VW was planning to axe this car from the fleet...?

Most people see VW and think of jettas and golfs...not luxury sedans.

The reason the Phaeton doesn't sell is because of the badge. You just proved that with your second sentence. It's a shame, really, because the Phaeton is an EXCELLENT car--it holds its ground quite well with the 7er, S-class, and A8.

What happen to the big drooping grill that has become the signature for all new VW's and Audi's. Without it, the Phaeton looks old and out-of-date, but cost $$$$$.

So is the car being sold in the US again? I hope the redesign is a hit... this is such a great car.

For some reason, it looks even blander than before the face lift. It looks like a late model Camry.

Volkswagen Phaeton Coupe news
From Autocar...
VW plans Lotus-tuned Phaeton coupe
Volkswagen engineers are working with Lotus on a large coupe that's in the early stages of development.
Autocar sources spotted a number of Wolfsburg-registered vehicles at Lotus's Hethel HQ over the last few weeks.
An insider at Lotus told Autocar last week that engineers were working on a 'big coupe' for VW.
The latest rumour is that vehicle will be a direct rival for the Mercedes SL and will be based on the next-generation Volkswagen Phaeton.
Since then, a very early prototype has been spotted on the country lanes around Hethel. It appears to be a two-door Audi A8 with a dramatically cut-down wheelbase and the correct proportions for large coupe-cabriolet.
Although there has been no confirmation, the A8-derived mule suggests that the next-generation Phaeton could be based on the Audi A8's aluminium spaceframe chassis. Such a move would neatly follow Mercedes¹s decision to also build the next-generation SL around an aluminium chassis.
The VW Phaeton was the pet project of then-VW Group boss Ferdinand Piech. One of his aims for VW was to drive the brand upmarket and directly target Mercedes.
Although the Phaeton has sold relatively slowly it looks like Piech - now chairman of the VW supervisory board and major shareholder in Porsche - has insisted that an expanded Phaeton family survives for a second generation.
The co-operation between Lotus and VW has another intriguing aspect. VW is said to be close to buying the ailing Malaysian car-maker Proton. Lotus is also owned by parent company Proton Holdings. A buy-out could eventually bring Lotus and VW even closer together.

I don't know why VW keeps trying to break out into the luxury market. Volkswagen literally means "peoples car", not some expensive luxury car that few people can afford...
