Volkswagen: Phaeton News

From the car connection

Volkswagen is testing a 600-hp Bentley-powered Phaeton, and sources tell us they are getting ready to launch the most powerful “people's car” in its history.

Bernd Pischetsrieder has rubber‑stamped plans for the Phaeton R, which could see it going head‑to‑head with the future Mercedes 612-hp S63 AMG. Volkswagen’s secret weapon will be under the hood: the Bentley Continental GT’s twin‑turbo 6.0‑liter W12 engine.

The W12 produces 552 hp in the two‑door Bentley. However, Volkswagen is hoping to liberate even more grunt in a bid to match the 6.0‑liter V-12 S‑Class, which could run the 0‑60 sprint in less than five seconds.

Nothing is yet official, but sources at VW’s Braunschweig engine development center hint that 600 hp is easily accessible through a moderate increase in turbocharger boost pressure.

This muscular prototype – spied undergoing driveline tests in the Alps – is testing the W12. Giant air ducts are needed up front to increase air flow to the intercooler and its associated plumbing.

The four‑wheel‑drive Phaeton will be the company's flagship racing model. The hot Phaeton will be badged R60. Expect a price tag of over $150,000 when and if the R60 reaches dealerships in the U.S.

no way, its got hood pins and a major body kit, very far away from the W8 Phaeton that is more oriented to style and luxury and all and not import tuner and lancer evo body kit crowd.l

they should throw that v-12 into the A8, that would make one sweet S8.

Just for accuracy's sake, it is a W12 not a V12 from VW. I also disagree with VW's strategy. I dont even like the W8 Passat idea and I have been proven right up to now (with millions of other people). It is not selling and it will probably be discontinued soon. Sales are even worse in Europe by the way.

I love the Phaeton. The interior is the hottets of any car on the road. That thing up there, however, looks like a crappy riced out version.

The Phaeton is how much?

VW Puts $94,600 Price on Top-Line Phaeton

Jan 15, 8:52 am ET

DETROIT (Reuters) - Volkswagen, the company long synonymous with the inexpensive Beetle, on Wednesday put a $94,600 price tag on ultra-luxury versions of its Phaeton sedan in the United States -- making it the highest-priced VW ever.
Europe's largest carmaker began selling a 335-horsepower V8 version of the Phaeton last November at a price of $64,600.

The 420-horsepower, 12-cylinder model, which VW touts as "the ultimate flagship of the Volkswagen brand," has only recently become available to U.S. car buyers.

At a base price of nearly $95,000, the Phaeton W12 is the most expensive VW ever, Volkswagen's U.S. subsidiary acknowledged in a press release.

Even so, it added, the model was also "the most affordable 12-cylinder vehicle on sale in the U.S. market." Its closest competitors include the BMW 760Li, which starts at about $116,000, and the Mercedes S600, priced from $122,000.

Why does this cost even more than the Flagship S8 of their luxury division? People that can afford those expensive BMW's or MB's are still going to pay extra for those no matter what's offered in the Phaeton.

I don't care if the VW Phaeton gives me a bath, licks my nuts and gives me a 50% discount at the local strippers. Part of Luxury is about excess and having something the most people can't/don't have. A VW= everyone's car. And when it breaks down (like it will) I can't wait to see the owners face in a BUg loaner

I'd much rather pay for their own W-12 A8, let alone this. And I'd get the S65 in a heartbeak, even if it's 30k more.

I sat in both the A8L and VW Phaeton W12 during the NAIAS last weekend... The Phateon didn't impress me at all. The interior was very nice, but the exterior is just plain boring. And the funniest part is that part of the back of the front passenger seat fell off when I was looking at the car. It was funny seeing how panicked VW the workers looked and watching them trying to put it back on. They ended up using double sided tape. I'm sure someone just was really rough on the interior, but it didn't leave a good impression to those looking at the car at the time.

The A8 W12 is much more impressive looking from both the outside and inside. You have to be insane to buy the VW over the Audi IMO.

And I am confident my opinion will be validated by sales figures

The Phaeton V8 is a nice deal, you can lease one for about $200 less a month than a comparable A8L. While I like the A8 better, that's tough to pass up. VW is obviously subsidizing the programs to get cars off the lot.

The W12 is cool, but I wouldn't drop $90k on a VW....sorry.

your getting better materials, more toys, more luxury, better build quality and far more attention to detail........ but with a VW badge

so that means it should cost nothing!?

While I personally wouldn't buy either, this is why I prefer the A8L

1. Phaeton is steel. A8 is Aluminum....A8L weighs 800lbs less than the VW. The A8 is already too heavy of a car, the VW is off the charts. Hence, the VW is more of a luxury ride, where the A8 is a tad more sporting for a full size luxury car.

2. I prefer the A8s interior, don't like the rows of same size buttons in the VW (would just annoy me after awhle).

3. Audi has good service departments, VW on the other hand is hopefully improving.

4. I like the A8s styling better (subjective), the Phaeton to me looks like the Passat's older brother. The owner of the local VW dealer drives a black W12 all tinted out. From the rear it looks cool, but the rest just leaves me cold. I think it looks better in its SWB form, which we aren't getting here. The SWB A8 will be here in the Fall as an 05, that will look better than the A8L imho as well. Just not into the stretched out rear door look.

No doubt though, both cars have awesome build quality.

ya but the LS430 is lame.

im sure it will do better than phaeton cuz it has Lexus label... and we know how label whores are...

but...

the phaeton would be the better car hands down.

everyone should get a back copy of Jan 2002 CAR UK magazine... and you will find great insight into why the Phaeton is the best car in its class.
