That C-Pillar looks like it's from a Skoda and the hood lines are a little weird but over all it's not bad.

That would be kind of backwards but who knows - maybe there's some Czech influence amidst the designers.

Looks sweet IMO. Here's a pic of the front end, which I think looks better than the back.

Look at the new Octavia on the main page of http://www.skoda-auto.com/

I'm sure the designers talk to eachother. All of the VW brands seem to have some family dna shared between them.

While virtually the same car, it's a big deal to have the real thing (VW) rather than the local version (Octavia) in Prague. I assume I'll see the new one when I go through the airport tomorrow.

That big ass grille looks better on the VW than it does on the Audi.

New VW Passat for 2005
Przemek Lis
Contributing Editor
edited 05-31-2004

The next generation Passat is set to arrive in early 2005. The new Passat will ride on a modified and lengthened PQ35 platform called PQ46. The PQ46 uses a transversely mounted engine instead of the current longitudinal layout. Suspension is by MacPherson front struts and a multilink arrangement at the rear. The 6th generation Passat will compete against the entry level BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C class, instead of D segment cars like the Ford Mondeo and Opel Vectra. The new grill and front will eventually appear on all future Volkswagen models except the Golf and Polo, since these 2 models are icons and will remain so. The general styling of the new Passat is a good indication of what to expect from VW in the next few years. The PQ46 architecture will also spawn the Passat wagon due in summer 2005 and a new Sharan van in 2006.
The overall size of the new Passat will remain basically the same to the current car, but with the new engine layout, allows for a shorter hood and longer wheelbase. The longer wheelbase liberates more space inside and in the trunk, where 500 litres is the rumoured volume. Interior quality is expected to remain high with soft plastics and new electronic gizmos.

The engine line-up is also expected to change drastically, with VW ditching the V6 engines and the slow selling W8. Buyers can expect 4 gasoline engines and 3 diesels. The gasoline engines include a 1.6 litre 8v with 115hp, a 2.0 litre 16v FSI with 150hp, a 2.0 litre 16v FSI turbo with 200hp, and finally a 3.2 litre 24v VR6 with 250hp, with FSI arriving in 2007. The diesel line-up includes a 1.9 litre 8v TDI with 105hp, a 2.0 litre 16v TDI with 140hp, and a 2.0 16v TDI with 160hp.

Five and six speed gearboxes will be offered depending on the engine, while the six-speed DSG transmission will be optional. The Passat will come standard with front wheel drive with all wheel drive as an option. Prices should remain close the current car.

So what can we expect?

God I wish VWs weren't such pieces of ass and their service departments didn't suck ... I love VWs.

Very nice, but damn VW; if you're going to have the Passat compete against the C and 3, and therefore, the A4, atleast stop making deriviative front facias from Audi's design too. That car is beautiful but it hover's to closely to Audi IMHO. That grill resembles Audi's new grill way to closely for me.

It seems sorta sad that the VW and Audi look so similar. When Honda and Acuras look closely alike people bewail them as looking too similar and being really the same car. Usually tagged onto those comments are also lines such as 'tarted-up econobox' and 'pricey-accord'. Now Honda tries to differentiate more from the Acura in NA. Seems as if Audi should probably do the same (well, worldwide for them). At least make the 'trademark grill' that Audi I assumed was adopting more of a trademark and ditch it on the Passat.

Oh well, anyway, the Passat doesn't look too bad, regardless. Maybe they engineered away the gremlins also with the new looks .

I guess the real differentiation will be in the price. Audi still does not have the cachet to attract the MB BMW type prices for its mid sized sedan (although it will try) while VW will try to keep the Passat at the high end of Accord/Camry prices.

werd to titan. Why would you make your "cheap" brand look like your luxury brand? A vw should not be looking like the A6 and A8. I think it looks good but i would be pissed if i was an audi owner that they are whoring out the look

The proof is in the pudding. If the production version still looks good and is more reliable than prior VWs, then we may have a winner.

My favorite thing about VW is the engine choices. What other company gives you choice of a turbo 4, a turbo diesel, a V6, and a NA 4 for one car?

Is the Passat shown a concept or a production version? I think it looks pretty good.

Who knows. It could even be a photochop. Can't tell until you see it at the dealer. It will probably be making the car show circuit this fall. All of the info is from a UK site so things for NA might be different.

According to the article, I don't think they will be going with the V6 or the W8 engine options. The new engine bay cannot accomodate the longitundinal mounted engine. It looks like they're sticking with the 4 bangers, diesels, and the VR6 engine found in the Golf R32.

The new Passat looks okay, don't really like the backend though. However, I like the current one more.

The car looks great. The one mistake in the article is claiming that VW will use the 3.2VR6 engine. That engine is being left to Audi. VW is replacing it with a 3.6VR6 pushing out 260-280hp. We'll see this engine first in the Passat, then in the Touareg, and possibly a new Golf R36.

I doubt the U.S. market will see THREE diesel options. If they sell the new Passat with a good diesel engine, and the electrical gremlins of VW's past have been ironed out, then we may have found a car to replace my fiance's Saturn with.

That's a pretty good looking car. I hope that they do work out all the traditional VW group gremlins. I might even consider that for a next car.

Looks nice; but after 4 yrs with a buggy Jetta, I'd rather get a Subaru or Toyota for a second car.

Looks good!

I won't be surprised if the W8 isn't continued. The current W8 version doesn't offer much more over a V6 Passat.

Looks very nice, but I agree with Titan that it's too close to Audi... VW really has branding issues lately

By golly you are right. Only I prefer the rear look of the Octavia to the Passat. In fact, the rear taillights of the Skoda looks like the older Passat.

to you. Did you read my post? That's EXACTLY my point. This Passat resembles the new Audis way to much, expecially in the front. They ARE whoring out the new Audi look. I hate that. VW's got the resources and designers to come up with a unique design specific to VW. They don't have to make derivative copies of Audi's design.
