Volkswagen to offer Passat R GT kit
Last year at SEMA, Volkswagen unveiled the Passat R GT Concept — an appearance kit that gives the sedan a "racy and aggressive" look. According to a published report today, Volkswagen plans to begin selling the kit as a $4500 option to Passat buyers. Current owners of the new Passat will also be able to upgrade their cars with the kit. The R GT package will include 18-inch titanium-colored wheels, Pirelli sports tires, oval-shaped tailpipes, and a body kit with color-contrasting elements. More images after the jump…

So, it looks like VW is going to offer their own version of the A-Spec package.

Reports: Volkswagen Passat R36 due in spring 2007
Earlier this month, German and Dutch media reports indicated Volkswagen would roll out its powerful R36 Passat in spring 2007 with a 300 horsepower engine and DSG gearbox. The U.K.'s AutoExpress now says Volkswagen has "confirmed" the report, indicating the R36 will be used to do battle with the turbocharged Mazda 6 MPS. The report indicates the R36 will use the same 280bhp 3.6-litre V6 engine already available in the U.S. However, we strongly suspect initial reports of an uprated 300 horsepower version of the engine are more accurate. It's also possible different versions may be offered for various markets. Some reports have suggested the R36 will take styling cues from the Passat R GT Concept.

.....but this seems hot. Too bad it will probably cost more than the current $41k on a topped 3.6 4Motion.

Max, I saw a loaded 3.6L 4Motion at a mall in Albany (NY) that stickered at $41k. My son and I were sticker shocked by that. Nice car and it looks upscale enough but (as you indicated), that is G35, 3-series and TL territory; three brands that are upmarket of VW IMHO.
Then again, all of VW's cars seem to have established themselves at nearly the same level as their "upmarket" Audi counterparts.
