How about a Jetta with a 270 hp turbo-four like the upcoming Sonata turbo???????

^^ Just get the 2.0T motor and flash to stage 1 for 500 bucks....done!

Considering Hyundai can get a midsize sedan up to 34 mpg highway on regular fuel with a turbo 2L making 274 hp I'd expect VW should be able to do better.
Of course what we expect and they do are two different things, and I hold little faith in VW here.

I thought the 34 rating was for the DI 2.4 engine?

You guys are missing the point if you're looking at their TDI engines for performance. If Hyundai can make a very fuel-efficient turbo 4-banger that makes gobs of power, then good for them. But 34 mpg highway doesn't mean much when these diesels are getting 40+ mpg combined.

Yeah, but that article I quoted said the TDI had, "...the power of a sports car". I call complete BS on that. Everybody acts as though 236 ft/lb is such a big deal but torque gets you nothing when your hp peak is 115. If all you care about is mpg, by all means get a wimpy TDI. Just don't make it out to be a sports car.....

The most boring exterior of any car on sale today.
And from what I hear, interior isn't really the best either, part of VW's downpricing. Odd, they were trying to position themselves as more upmarket a few years ago, weren't they?
Put that along with no new engines, and you have a destined loser.

Points I'd offer up ->
*Styling*
I think it's pretty dreary with the 2010 Mazda3, 2011 Focus, and even the 2006 Civic all considered, possibly even the new Cruze and Forte though both of those are somewhat bland too. Bland styling doesn't hurt sales (just ask Honda and Toyota about their Accords and Camrys), so this is more of a subjective point anyway.
*Engines*
Disappointingly, they're all pretty much carried over. The TDI was great, but the 2.5L I-5 should've died out in favor of a 2.0L I-4 (or comparable) in the S and SE, with the SE offering a 2.0T option and the SEL making that engine standard. Or some getup like that. The GLI needs a huge increase in power, the 265 hp 2.0T if we're honest.
As a result of its sheer lack of forward thinking, this car is probably destined to be outsold by the new Focus, Mazda3, and next generation Civic and Avante/Elantra, Corolla, maybe even the Forte. But if they can get quality control in check, maybe that will help.

It'll sell a ton more, but I think that's because of its price.
Is there a GLI version coming soon? Hopefully that'll put a bit of excitement in the bland styling IMO

To continue the closed 2011 Jetta thread ... The Jetta is going more mass-market. So yes, they are trying to find ways to lower the entry-point to the Jetta. But the Passat replacement will cover some of the old price range of the Jetta ...
From VWVortex:
I think the GLI will be a decent looking car.

Threads merged. (Forgot to do that last night, sorry)
I like the simple styling. Some nice wheels will go a long way. But it does need more HP in base form. They should just drop the 2.0L. Its woefully underpowered.

2011 Volkswagen Jettas to be sold for $5,995 each--really
Volkswagen is selling three 2011 Jettas through Gilt Groupe for $5,995--slashing the “1” from the usual $15,995 starting price.
One car will be sold at noon Eastern time for three days starting on Dec. 15 in the flash sale. The sale will only be accessible on the first day through Gilt mobile applications on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android devices. It will extend to Gilt.com on Dec. 16 and 17.
The redesigned 2011 Jetta launched in October. It gets fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The car comes with a folding rear seat, electronic stability control, a tire-pressure-monitoring system, heated side mirrors and a four-speaker sound system.
Volkswagen is the first automotive brand to be sold on Gilt, a flash-sale site that offers high-end products to its members.
