Volkswagen of America announced today that the Jetta TDI Cup “Street” Edition will hit North American dealerships in January 2010. The 2011 Jetta ditches the wildly prolific Golf platform for its own architecture, which VW calls the New Compact Sedan. It’s handsome enough in a conservative German kind of way and more chiseled, but it’s really staid. The styling riffs on the New Compact Coupe concept car yet lacks the concept’s aggression. The result is a car that looks like a 7/8 scale CC and is essentially the same size as the Toyota Camry.
Choose one of four engines. The list starts with a 104-horsepower 1.2-liter gasoline mill. Less than 30 -- as in some SUV third rows -- is ridiculous. Of course, specs can be deceiving. Creative design of the backs of the front seats can make a rear seat more comfy than one in another car with a higher number on paper.
The new Jetta is a critical part of VW's plan to dramatically boost U.S. sales. U.S. CEO Stefan Jacoby calls the new Jetta "the beginning of a new era for Volkswagen."
More room is one part of the strategy. Offering it for less money is another. The 2011's base price of about $16,000 is down significantly from the 2010 Jetta ($17,735 to start) and puts it more in line with compact category sales leaders -- such as Toyota's Corolla ($15,540 to start for 2010) or Honda's Civic ($15,665 for 2010) -- and Chevrolet's all-new 2011 Cruze ($16,995 to start). And the base Jetta will have features such as air conditioning that you don't get till you move up to, for example, the $16,405 Civic.

Full power specs on all engines weren't given, but VW did say the diesel is expected to generate about 235 pounds-feet of torque and take the new Jetta from 0 to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds.
Transmissions: Six-speed DSG automatic optional, manual standard on all models (five speeds for most, six for the GLI and TDI).
U.S. model range: S, SE, SEL, TDI diesel and turbo GLI, about parallel to current lineup.
Safety: Electronic stability control and tire pressure monitoring continue to be standard (not true across the board in the class). Six air bags.

Why is it that marketing guys always show some AT (or maybe DSG in this case) tranny being shifted as a manual when in real life that almost never happens. In case of this car they should have shown a real MT if they're trying to make a point.

And not to continue complaining, but they're still going to keep the I-5? WHYYYYYYY? It's not a good engine for this class, sucking fuel like a midsize Camry or Accord, not a Corolla or Civic. They need a new 2L or smaller I-4 like the new Focus, and the super-turbo charger I-4 or turbo 2.0 could be the upgrade engine (instead of just doing a large displacement I-4 like Kia, Toyota, Mazda and others do). That keeps the economy up as well as the power.
Whatever. Like the Civic and Corolla, these once strong players have lost their stride.

It is the rear leg room of 36inch that make it best in class closer to mid size. car is wider, taller than compacts. It is mid size car for price of compact.

Buuuut two of those three engines are in more exclusive, expensive models which run from 23,000 up to over 30 thou. So for the regular Jetta models there is only one, and it's a rather thirsty, over-cylindered engine.
VW says the new base engine has 115 PS. That would be the 2.0L right? That's less than 115 horsepower, which is well down from the rest of the group.
Like I said, maybe I just complain too much. But I think VW needs to think their engine strategy out a little more with the regular model(s).

At a starting price point of around $16,000, the 2011 Mk6 Jetta offers best-in-class rear legroom, a premium interior and Volkswagen essentials.
Unveiled for the first time in Times Square, New York, the Jetta features clean lines, refined architecture and premium style. It will be available in the US this October.
Engine & Transmission
The North American version of the new Jetta features four engines in the US and Canada. These include a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel direct-injection (TDI) Clean Diesel, which features common-rail injection with 138hp, 236 lb-ft of torque and boasting a highway fuel economy rating of 42mpg.
Additional engines include a 2.0, 2.5 R5, and 2.0 TSI. These are all gasoline offerings, with the new base engine giving 113hp and a combined fuel economy of 28mpg. The 138hp 2.5-liter engine will remain as a middle offering, while the new GLI will be powered by the 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI with 198hp. All Jetta engines will be offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. An automatic transmission will also be available with each engine version as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen will offer the 6-speed DSG. In the US market, S, SE, SEL and TDI versions of the Jetta will be available, as will a 2.0-liter GLI.
Exterior
The Mk6 Jetta has been completely overhauled, inside and out. Its new wheelbase and overall length are significantly bigger than its predecessor - resulting in more space and greater comfort.
At 182.7" long, 57.1" tall and 70.1" wide, it is more than 3.5" longer than its Mk5 predecessor. On the front end of the car, the prominent horizontal lines defines the design. The high-gloss black radiator grille combine with trapezoidal headlights. Under this is the fully painted bumper. Below that, another cooling intake and the tray-shaped front spoiler gives the car a sporty finish. The front-end also shows a powerful transition from the V-shaped hood to the fenders; the shoulder section was derived from the earlier NCC concept car, and provides dynamic and muscular styling.
The styling characteristics in the profile of the Jetta meld into yet another interpretation of the 'design DNA' conceptualized by Walter de Silva, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, Klaus Bischoff. An example of the unique styling is found in the shoulder or 'tornado' line and the emphasized wheels arches. Thanks to wide track, the wheel arches also form a precise transition to the tires, which could be as big as 18" on GLI models.
With integrated turn signal indicators, the styling of the mirrors emulates the larger CC model. The tail lights are split into two sections, extending on either side from the fender into the trunk.
Interior
A key benefit of the extended wheelbase is a more comfortable layout of the rear seating area. Legroom is now a long 38.1"; a 2.6" gain over the previous model. Customers looking for personalization can, for the first time, have interior accents changed at a Volkswagen dealer. The new steering wheel designs impress both visually and to the touch. The center console has new controls for climate, radio and navigation systems. This console section is slightly inclined toward the driver. Also in optimal view are the round instruments with the multifunction display (trip computer) located between them. The rear bench is split 40/60, increasing the versatility. The trunk can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch.
Safety
Previous Jetta versions received accolades for safety with features like electronic stability control and tire pressure monitoring standard. The Mk6 Jetta has been further enhanced with even more protections and crash safety improvements. At 182.7" long, 57.1" tall and 70.1" wide, it is more than 3.5" longer than its Mk5 predecessor. On the front end of the car, the prominent horizontal lines defines the design. The high-gloss black radiator grille combine with trapezoidal headlights. Under this is the fully painted bumper. Below that, another cooling intake and the tray-shaped front spoiler gives the car a sporty finish. The front-end also shows a powerful transition from the V-shaped hood to the fenders; the shoulder section was derived from the earlier NCC concept car, and provides dynamic and muscular styling.
The styling characteristics in the profile of the Jetta meld into yet another interpretation of the 'design DNA' conceptualized by Walter de Silva, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group, and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, Klaus Bischoff. An example of the unique styling is found in the shoulder or 'tornado' line and the emphasized wheels arches. Thanks to wide track, the wheel arches also form a precise transition to the tires, which could be as big as 18" on GLI models.
With integrated turn signal indicators, the styling of the mirrors emulates the larger CC model. The tail lights are split into two sections, extending on either side from the fender into the trunk.
Interior
A key benefit of the extended wheelbase is a more comfortable layout of the rear seating area. Legroom is now a long 38.1"; a 2.6" gain over the previous model. Customers looking for personalization can, for the first time, have interior accents changed at a Volkswagen dealer. The new steering wheel designs impress both visually and to the touch. The center console has new controls for climate, radio and navigation systems. This console section is slightly inclined toward the driver. Also in optimal view are the round instruments with the multifunction display (trip computer) located between them. The rear bench is split 40/60, increasing the versatility. The trunk can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch.
Safety
Previous Jetta versions received accolades for safety with features like electronic stability control and tire pressure monitoring standard. The Mk6 Jetta has been further enhanced with even more protections and crash safety improvements. Up to six airbags (two front airbags, two side airbags in front, two window airbags/thorax airbags in the area of the front side windows) are part of the equipment package

I wish VW would make that Jetta coupe concept (but with a normal gas engine in it). WHile they are at it, maybe they could make a 2.0 liter turbo 4 with a little more than 200 hp. That was impressive in, oh, 2004.....

So, next year the Passat is tossed and the NMS built in Chattanooga becomes the mid sized sedan. The car under the Jetta will be the Polo/Rabbit/Golf?
