Details emerge on next-gen VW GTI, harder-edged GTI-R

The recently unveiled VW Golf / Rabbit MkVI will form the basis for the next GTI as well, but we already knew that. What is news is that the GTI car will get a version of the revised 2.0-liter TFSI engine, good for 211 horsepower andd 258lb-ft of torque, which represents improvements of 11hp and 51lb-ft. The latest iteration of the evergreen hot hatch is likely to arrive in European showrooms by the spring of next year, with a U.S. release expected near that time as well.

A concept version of the car could make a car show debut by October, however, says Autocar. To complement the added power offered up by the new engine, VW will improve the car’s steering feel and accuracy and handling performance.

On the outside, the car will get Audi-like LED daytime running lights, and new front and rear fascias along with unique head and taillights to differentiate it from lesser Golfs / Rabbits. The wheels will also grow an inch in diameter, with the base GTI rolling on 18-inchers and 19s offered as options.

Under the hood, the new global EA888 engine will sport changes that will make servicing faster and therefore less expensive for owners, thanks to easier access to the turbo and oil cooler. The power boost is largely owed to a variable valve lift system developed by Audi.

The all-wheel drive R32 model will be discontinued, and replaced by an AWD GTI-R with the same turbo motor from the Audi TT-S, making 265 horsepower.

GTI is on a very short list for my next ride. 258lb-ft just moved it up that list.

Unless I get really cheap and just get a Fit.

You don't want a GTI...they are boring.

As for MPG....I've tried driving it like a grandma lately to see what kind of high MPG I can get...stay out of boost as much as possible.....and here is the shocker:

I get 34-35.5 MPG on 85% HWY 15% City. :toocool:

dom 08-07-2008 10:48 AM

That's damn impressive. I never saw MPG as a reason to not get a GTI. Those numbers just enforce that even more.

I was impressed to...to say the least.

Sticker has it at 29 mpg hwy (2008 MPG standards)
The 2006 GTI was rated at 32 mpg using the old mpg standards IIRC.

Don't get me wrong.....if you drive it like you stole it :racing: your mpg will be "a bit" lower.

gocubsgo55 08-07-2008 02:18 PM

My Stage 2 GTI has about 280 HP and 330 lb/ft of Torque to the crank. I still get great MPG unless I'm mashing on the throttle. About 32 MPG highway cruising at 70 MPH, about 22-23 MPG city.

Assuming the power increases add up on this new motor, you're looking at about 265 HP and 350 lb./ft. of Torque with a simple chip, let alone bolt ons like turbo backs and intakes. That's impressive!

From what i've heard it's very unlikely the GTI gets the 211/258 motor. Basically there are two version of the new 2.0T ccta engine line. The audis with longitudinal layout(a4) gets the version with variable valve lift and 211/258. All transverse get the ccta that is rated at an identical 200/207 as the last gen 2.0T. The new motor is available now in all A3s/TTs/GTIs/Passats/Jettas. The good news? With just a chip and no valve lift you are still looking at 250hp/285lbft of torque :P

:what: holy beejeesus! and it was 200/207 to begin with. Nice!

they should have turbo'd the 3.2 VR6.... one of the best sounding V6s, period IMO. Also looks like the TT-S (2.0T) is just a tuned variant of the 2.0T, am I correct? :rippedoff

the TT-S has a sligtly bigger turbo -- a k04 instead of a k03 like in my TT 2.0T. Just a tune on a k04 and you are looking at 300hp/330lbft of torque. That's all stock other than a reflash. Thing is going to be much quicker than people think. I mean my 2.0T FWD with just a GIAC tune will hit a 14 flat at 100mph.

Stasis engineering has a FWD 2.0TT with a k04 kit on it and an LSD and timed out a 0-60 of 4.8 seconds. Guarantee a tuned tt-s will be faster than that with it's AWD.

EDIT: One other quick note. THe transver 2.0Ts(GTI/A3/TT) were majorly underrated from the factory. They are more like 220hp/230lbft motors stock.

Yeah, I want to get a K04 in a year or 2. But then of course, I could just go from Stage 2 to Stage 3...

384 HP. I can only imagine what this new engine will potentially produce.

According to the press release posted by Moog the Euro GTI will get it so I'd assume so will the NA car. But if it doesn't..... ya...chip away.

What other cars are on your list of possibilities?

Way too early to tell since I'm likely 3 to 5 years away (pending wife approval :D )

Could be anything really. Probably slightly used.

Although at this point I don't really see the point in anything above a Fit or econobox considering 98% of the driving is to and from work.

You have a "list" when you are 5 years out from getting a new car!?

VW to produce drop-top Golf in 2010

VW to produce drop-top Golf in 2010

Volkswagen’s sixth-generation Golf/Rabbit first broke cover just weeks ago, but we have already learned of several iterations of the hatchback set to join the lineup. It was revealed earlier this month that GTI and GTI-R versions of the Golf are in the works, and now comes word that a convertible will join the Golf lineup.

The new Golf convertible is expected to hit the market in 2010. “It is a demanding time frame,” an insider told Automotive News. “But the new Golf convertible is aiming for spring business the year after next.”

To save money and to get the convertible to market by 2010, VW will use a modified version of the Audi A3’s soft convertible top for use on the Golf. Pricing-wise, the Golf convertible will slot between the New Beetle convertible and the Eos.

VW’s plants in Wolfsburg and Mosel will produce the new drop-top.

Next Gen GTI spied

Volkswagen just unveiled its sixth-generation Golf/Rabbit, but the German automaker is already hard at work developing the GTI high-performance version of the popular hatch, as evidenced by our latest spy shots.

Sources are saying that the new GTI will be powered by a 211-horsepower, 258lb-ft of torque, 2-liter turbo. VW’s DSG transmission will also likely be part of the GTI package.

The GTI will debut this October as a “concept: at the Paris Motor Show and will go on sale shortly afterwards in Europe, although American enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer.

That's Audi's TFSI 2.0 4-cylinder. Will definitely make the MkVI GTI scream.

I love those BBS CHs!

If my GTI ends up being reliable along with all the other things it's been, I will be purchasing something like a late MK6 or early MK7 as my next car; this thing is fabulous.

ThermonMermon 08-23-2008 10:28 AM

always liked the Golf. although it seems that there should be a standard requirement for aftermarket aesthetics so the car doesnt look homosexual. (however, purchase of a R32 is a qualifier in stock form)

Illustrated: 2010 VW GTI

Volkswagen recently unveiled its sixth-generation Golf/Rabbit, but most enthusiasts are still waiting for news on the next-generation GTI. Our spy photographers managed to catch the first images of a GTI prototype while out testing earlier this month, but the test vehicle was still heavily camouflaged. However, our artists have shed the GTI of its cladding and we now have the first glimpse of what the next-generation hot hatch will look like.

http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/3...tiillo1rf2.jpg

Following in the tradition of past GTI models, the performance version of the sixth-generation car will not look radically different from the standard car. That being said, larger wheels and tires, a lowered suspension and a few GTI-specific parts will be part of the equation. A red grille surround will also signify that the GTI treatment.

Sources are saying that the new GTI will be powered by a 211-horsepower, 258lb-ft of torque, 2-liter turbo. VW’s DSG transmission will also likely be part of the GTI package.

The GTI will debut this October as a “concept: at the Paris Motor Show
