Volkswagen: Coupe Concept
No auto show would be complete without someone leaking something ahead of schedule, and alasthe Detroit Auto show is now complete. We have for you some leaked photos and early details on a production-likely new small coupe from the folks at VW.
Word is that VW will be debuting the cleverly named New Concept Coupe later today, but for now, the folks at Worldcarfans.uk wanted to share some of the info and pictures slightly ahead of schedule.
The early details on this pretty little coupe are that it finds its motivation from a 1.4-liter TSI engine – turbocharged and good for 150 horsepower and 177 lb-ft. of torque. If that wasn’t enough, the concept also features a 27 hp electric motor and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. If VW can find a way to incorporate this electric motor without too much added weight, this little concept car could prove to be quite the sporty offering.
For now, zero-to-60 is reported at a reasonably pedestrian 8.6 seconds, but a very respectable 45 miles per gallon to go along with it.
So far we know that this originally named concept car is being referred to as a Golf Coupe prototype, but that it would likely wear the Jetta name if it were to make it way to production. Given the very believable, mainstream-friendly lines of this car – we believe the reports that this name-less concept is expected to head for production within two years. The NCC looks to be a blend of a new 3-series BMW and a Scion tC in terms of exterior styling, albeit slightly stretched compared to the tC.
Check back later today for high-res pictures and additional information after the official release – live from Detroit.

^^ agreed.
nothing groundbreaking here. already looks dated, in fact. too generic. poor execution on the classic dashboard. not only does it not look fresh/revised, but they are marketing a 90s interior style towards 20-something buyers. smart.
the exterior has some great flares to it, but the overall design proves little progression. this thing is not too far apart than a 99' jetta. im surprised that the largest auto maker is able to get away with these things.

i love it. i dont think it looks dated at all. might just be the color scheme. this is 100x better looking than the MKV and its jellybean/corolla shape. this is a return to a more euro design for the jetta.
VW also mentioned in earlier reports that the new NCS/NMS cars will be cheaper to produce than current jetta/passat. seeing the new golf/GTI there was no drop off in quality.

If this is indeed the new Jetta.....

VAG is starting to reach into the parts bin now.... that car definitely looks good, but I hope the quality doesn't start gradually decreasing 5-10 years from now.

interesting how VW draws attention to the 2 tone rear bumper, while not having a visible exhaust. it really says, "hey, im a non-polluting hybrid."
but geez, what are they thinking with that interior. stepping into that car is like stepping into a time machine.

JDM Laser Fogs!
I think the concept looks good. I'm guessing the actually production version will be much more conservative as far as the body lines and fender flairs go. Also waiting for a sporty GLI version that isn't FWD.

Not a good thing IMO, because it makes the more expensive Audi look less special ergo less expensive. What's funny is no one will complain about this yet they continually complain about Acuras looking like Hondas and vice-versa haha

What Would Don Draper Do?
i see similarities between the passat and A6, and it doesn't cheapen the audi. same with nissans/infinitis, toyotas/lexus, etc.

If you can afford an A4, you're getting an Audi aren't you? Regardless of how good the Jetta might be?
And as good as the Jetta looks, there are definitely reasons the Audi is the better car. I drove a 2007 Jetta 2.5 as a loaner while my Audi was in service and while that car was better than the Mazda3 I currently own, it wasn't even in the same continent compared to my S4 in terms of NVH, materials quality, etc ... Obviously a 4.2L V8 and a 2.5L 5-cylinder are not comparable so that's not what I'm talking about.
Audi dealers are generally much better dealers with better service experiences (I've been to both).
This Jetta will help sell a lot more Jettas but I have no worries that they'd poach A4 sales in any significant numbers.

If anything changes, it'll be the front air dam and the rear valance.
I'll be shocked (and eat my words) if this car hits the market significantly different than what we just saw.

Nobody complains that Honda vehicles look like Acura vehicles.
They complain than Acura vehicles look like the cheaper Honda cousins.
The VW/Audi argument is the opposite.
The VW vehicles looking like their more expensive cousins.
...and that is a good thing.

I agree with many of the previous comments. It's an Audi copy and paste. It's a beautiful coupe, but the styling is to close to Audi's. It's the same issues I have with Nissan/Infiniti; they have got to differentiate styling more. That said, very nice coupe.
