Images of the 2011 Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck leaked online Tuesday morning, nearly two weeks ahead of the vehicle’s official debut. Looking much like Volkswagen’s Concept Pickup shown over a year ago, the production model ditches the Ridgeline-like integrated body in favor of conventional body-on-frame construction with separate cab and box sections.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter common rail injection diesel motor, delivering 163 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. A more economical version rated at 122 hp and 250 lb-ft will be added to the lineup a few months after launch. Customers will be able to choose between all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive layouts. In the case of AWD, power is split 40-to-60 in favor of the rear wheels.

Production is expected to start later this year in Pacheco, Argentina, and the truck will be sold in South America, South Africa, Australia, as well as in some European countries. There are no known plans at this time for North American sales. That said, we can’t help but think a reasonably priced, fuel-efficient pickup could do well in the United States. Rumor has it VW dealers shot down any talk of American sales, expressing concerns over the materials and relatively low price point of the truck.

Volkswagen is planning to build about 90,000 units annually.

A truck like this with the diesel engine would sell like crazy here in the U.S.

Infamous425 12-01-2009 12:54 PM

nice looking truck. the Tacoma needs more competitors

imj0257 12-01-2009 12:55 PM

Not bad looking. But I heard the Toureg was one of the worst rated vehicles recently and if this is similar to that then meh..

andURpoint 12-01-2009 05:28 PM

interesting design, VW dealers should have allowed it to sale in the US. The Frontier and Tacoma could use the competition to drive down the prices. 28k for a top loaded Tacoma and 32k for a top loaded Frontier is outrageous.

ThermonMermon 12-01-2009 06:06 PM

besides the head/taillights, this looks 15 years dated (outside & inside)

dom 12-01-2009 06:49 PM

Looks like a Ford Sport Trac.

majin ssj eric 12-01-2009 07:14 PM

Is that another rebadged Frontier?? :ugh:

Yumcha 12-01-2009 11:01 PM

Interesting...

Professor 12-04-2009 12:04 PM

Looks like it might melt in the sun.

sho_nuff1997 12-04-2009 12:06 PM

I would rock a diesel version of this.

AsianRage 12-04-2009 01:06 PM

Is it just me or you can phonetically pronounce the truck's name as "Am A Rock" as in "Volkswagen Am A Rock". A jab at Ford, perhaps? :dunno:

:duh: Chevy's tagline is "Built Chevy tough" and Ford's is "Am a rock"

Belzebutt 12-04-2009 03:07 PM

That's what I thought of too right away, "I'm a rock" i.e. Ford's "like a rock" slogan.

Colin 12-04-2009 03:25 PM

Funny, the name made me think of "Gorignak" the rock monster from Galaxy Quest (I don't know why....)

My thoughts as well. It doesn't look German - it looks American.

krio 12-07-2009 05:46 AM

ugly thing indeed.

JediMindTricks 12-07-2009 09:58 AM

i like it.

Moog-Type-S 12-07-2009 10:17 AM

:agree: Good looking small trucks like this with diesel engines in the U.S......you think would be a no brainer.

Like the Nissan Frontier(Which the surfacing is modeled after), or the Ford Explorer sportrack, Mitsu raider,Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Dodge Dakota and even the Beloved Tacoma ???

VW's are pieces of shit. Made in Mexico, with so- called "german engineering". I've owned 3, (1.8T, VR6 and a 2.0 gas.) all had problems, I spent more time working on them than driving them. I am so glad I bought an Acura.

Moog-Type-S 12-08-2009 10:21 AM

^^ My Acura had multiple transmissions made of glass....horrible paint & front brakes that had to be replaced at 10k miles. Acuras a horrible vehicles.

Blanket statement ignorance FTL. :whyme:

Coming to America?

When Volkswagen first revealed the production version of the 2011 Amarok pickup to the world at the 2010 Geneva Motor show, the automaker said that there would be no future for the truck in the U.S.

After its introduction rumors surfaced suggesting that the truck may still head to the U.S., only to be shot down by VW – citing the inability to support the 100,000 annual sales required in order for the truck to make sense.

Like a bad habit, this rumor just won’t go away – according to sources who spoke with Car and Driver, VW is rethinking their decision – citing their recent goals to vastly increase volume in the crucial North American market.

Rumor has it VW dealers shot down any talk of American sales, expressing concerns over the rugged and less-than-luxurious materials and relatively low price point of the truck. With the new rumor suggesting a revival, VW corporate may have decided that volume sales are more important than image. Furthermore, with the cheaper, more “American” Jetta on the way and the Ranger on its way out, VW may be realizing that the Amarok is better suited for the U.S. market now than ever.

The Amarock was designed primarily for South America and Russia, the body-on-frame Amarok promises to be a tough commercial-grade small pickup. Power comes from a 2.0-liter common rail injection diesel motor, delivering 163 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

A more economical version of the Amarok that will come rated at 122 hp and 250 lb-ft is set to be added to the lineup a few months after launch. Customers will be able to choose between all-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive layouts. In the case of AWD, power is split 40-to-60 in favor of the rear wheels.

Production is expected to start later this year in Pacheco, Argentina, and the truck will be sold in South America, South Africa, Australia, as well as in some European countries as of now.

A small DIESEL engine truck for the states......that's a no brainer.
Get it done!

Moog-Type-S 08-23-2010 10:36 AM

^^ You know any other small diesel engine trucks on the market in NA with 295 lb-ft of torque on tap?

methinks there is a big untapped market here.

phile 08-23-2010 04:48 PM

I know we all have our opinions, but I fell in love with this thing the first time I saw the pics. I don't see the ugly anywhere.

Moog-Type-S 08-23-2010 04:55 PM

For a small truck I like it....but more than the exterior design, I like the powerplant!!!

charliemike 08-23-2010 07:57 PM

If Honda can sell enough Ridgelines to justify the market, then I don't see how this won't sell.
