U.S. auto makers at the brink

Dumbass US automakers....that's all I can say:

http://www.reportonbusiness.com/serv.../Business/home

DETROIT — For two years, U.S. auto makers have told investors, creditors and workers to remain patient with a wrenching, industry-wide restructuring because a turnaround was just around the corner.

But with oil prices surging, the U.S. auto market bumping along at near-decade lows and ever more Americans defecting from trucks and sport utility vehicles, a new risk looms for Detroit: the future may be slipping out of its control.

US automakers just need to make more hybrids, diesels, and smaller cars now. No more bigass Hummers!

The funniest part of the article was this part

“We saw a real change in the industry demand for pickup trucks and SUVs in the first two weeks of May,” Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally said."
The figured it all out this month?

So lets get this straight. Japanese automakers rise to riches off the 70's oil crisis because of their small, fuel efficient cars. The Domestics lost market share because their lack of small, fuel efficient cars. Here we are about 35 years later on the verge of another oil crisis and the Domestics continue to lose market share because their lack of small, fuel efficient cars.

I'd like fewer SUV's on the road personally. They're a menace since their bumpers and weight are completely incompatible with passenger cars. Not to mention they block everyone else's view.

That just about sums it up...

Mopeds and Civics are are getting really popular again... to bad there isn't a rwd Corolla around like in the 70's

If gas prices keep going up and up, a Civic LX might start looking pretty good to me...

There's almost no good reason to drive those things daily, unless its for business. And even then you can get a panel van.

So many times I've backed out of a crowded driveway and some idiot's SUV is completely blocking my entire line of sight.... so I have to move up a bit, stand up in my seat, and time it.

And people sometimes buy big SUVs because they "feel safer" in them.... well why don't they consider others?

Ford has made some headway:

I've been watching their stock for the past couple of years, and just haven't figured out where I want to jump in....

Thank you!!

Honestly, there should be a different class of driver's licensing for SUVs (particularly truck based types), with alternate testing criteria.
