Toyota: Yaris News

Toyota Motor Corp.'s redesigned Vitz compact is slightly longer, wider and taller than the strong-selling previous version.

The redesigned Toyota Vitz features a more sharply raked windshield
The Vitz platform is the basis for more than seven other cars, including the Toyota Echo and Scion xB in North America and the Yaris in Europe.

The new platform suggests that those cars could grow in size when they are redesigned, too.

The Vitz has a new platform, suspension, brakes, and compact torque converter. Beginning in April, the Japan-market Vitz also will be available with an integrated starter generator to improve fuel economy.

The Vitz features a more sharply raked windshield, a shortened nose and a lengthened rear overhang that offers more interior luggage space. The interior combines all controls and gauges in a center console, with no gauges in front of the driver. That creates extra leg room.

The car is 4.3 inches longer, 0.8 inch taller and 1.2 inches wider than its predecessor. The wheelbase is 3.5 inches longer. The distance between the front and rear passengers' hip points is 34.6 inches, 1.8 inches longer than before.

The Vitz has been a hit for Toyota. In just six years, the automaker has sold 700,000.

Toyota won't say who was the chief designer for the 2005 Vitz. It says only that the design was a joint project involving its studios in France and Toyota City, Japan.

The car was crash-tested at speeds of 34 mph, the highest testing speed Toyota has used.

Akihiko Saito, Toyota's executive vice president in charge of product management and r&d, declined to say how many models will use the Vitz's platform.

ALL-NEW YARIS DEBUTS AT FRANKFURT INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW –
REPLACES ECHO IN TOYOTA’S U.S. LINE-UP
TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 12, 2005 - - Toyota Motor Marketing Europe (TMME),
will unveil the all-new European-specification Yaris three-door and five-door liftbacks
tomorrow at the 2005 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The Yaris three-door liftback
and another body configuration to be announced later, will replace the ECHO as
Toyota’s entry in the subcompact passenger-car segment when it goes on sale in the
United States as a 2007 model next spring.
The Frankfurt International Motor Show marks the world debut of the secondgeneration
Yaris, Toyota’s best-selling model in Europe. The first-generation Yaris
launched in 1999 and was named the (2000) European “Car of the Year”. Despite
having been on the market for six years, Yaris sales in Europe have increased every
year.
“The Yaris has been a hit in Europe and we are looking forward to its debut in the
U.S.,” said Jim Lentz, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager,
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. “As Toyota’s most affordable passenger car, the
Yaris will feature modern exterior styling and a surprising and upscale interior. It will be
one of the most economic and youthful passenger cars Toyota has built.”
Styled at Toyota’s European design studio, ED², the next-generation Yaris
features class-up styling and offers a new level of refinement, sophistication, and fun-todrive
performance to the subcompact segment. It has a strong, modern mono-form
shape with a low center of gravity exuding a youthful and proud stance. The nextgeneration
Yaris rides on an all-new platform that is longer and wider than its
predecessor. Color-keyed mirrors and door handles are standard features on the U.S.-
specification Yaris.

2007 Toyota Yaris 2-2-2-2-2
The Yaris interior provides unexpected roominess and a comfortable cabin. The
upscale interior provides remarkable design and a rear seat featuring a center headrest.
Driver and front passenger advanced airbags, and ample storage space are among the
array of standard interior features of the U.S.-specification Yaris.
Powering the U.S.-market Yaris liftback will be a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine
with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that will have impressive fuel
economy. Mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, the
engine will produce 106 horsepower and 103 ft.-lb. of torque. Combined with the
MacPherson strut front and rear torsion beam suspension, the Yaris will offer fun-todrive
handling and excellent maneuverability.
In addition to good overall handling, the U.S. Yaris also will offer seat-mounted
side and front and rear side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, an audio system with MP3
capability and mini-jack port, power windows, mirrors and door locks, and a 60/40 split
rear seat with reclining, sliding and fold flat features among its optional equipment.
The all-new Yaris three-door liftback will make its U.S. debut at a press
conference at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday, November 2.

Toyota Announces Pricing for 2006 Yaris

Canada Is First Market to Sell All-New Yaris, At Dealerships in
Mid-October

TORONTO, Oct. 6 /CNW/ - Responding to customer demand for more style and
performance in a practical, affordable package, Toyota is bringing the all-new
2006 Yaris to the Canadian market. Toyota - already the top-selling subcompact
nameplate in Canada - expects to completely redefine the expectations of
owners in this highly competitive category, thanks to the Yaris's dynamic
exterior styling, roomy and chic interior, precise handling, and class-leading
safety features and fuel economy. With its introduction to North America and
other parts of the world, the new Toyota Yaris becomes a truly global vehicle
with widespread appeal.
Traditionally, subcompacts compromised style and performance in order to
provide basic functionality at an affordable price. Toyota listened when
target owners expressed their desire for a small vehicle that is highly
practical, without being 'sub' anything.
"Yaris has enormous appeal for 'trend-setting' owners, who demand a
vehicle that expresses their personalities without compromising style, quality
and handling," said Tony Wearing, Managing Director of TCI. "Extroverted and
active, these are well-educated, technologically savvy consumers who use their
access to information to make knowledgeable purchase decisions based on their
unique tastes and needs."
The Yaris is the latest creation from ED2, Toyota's European design
studio, and the first vehicle sold in Canada to be created entirely using
Toyota's new Vibrant Clarity design principles. 'Vibrant' refers to the
design's energy and innovative character; 'clarity' stresses rationality, the
need to keep the design crisp and easy to interpret at a glance. ED2 has
thoughtfully expressed Vibrant Clarity throughout the vehicle to create a
design with worldwide appeal, and a character that is instantly recognizable
as Toyota.
The minimal front overhang, wide stance, flowing sidelines and
streamlined bumpers result in a uniquely proportioned body that is both strong
and energetic. The 'S'-shaped doors are very difficult to engineer but catch
and reflect light so that it plays up the design's refreshing energy. The
flowing shoulder line enhances the lively proportions, and the forward-leaning
rear silhouette creates a feeling of power and stability.
The ergonomically designed interior package is carefully designed to
provide class-leading roominess in a cabin that is highly functional as well
as sporty and comfortable. A number of design elements create a sense of
eye-catching quality that is uncommon in the class. A 'Loop Style Concept'
creates a visually open space using a light colour scheme that loops from the
door arm rests to the pillars and headliner. The centre instrument cluster
uses an unusual vertical layout and an innovative hoodless instrument panel
design to create a totally unique appearance that is both sporty and highly
functional.
Furthermore, the 2006 Yaris is equipped with an exceptional range of
standard and optional equipment, and comes in a host of vibrant colours
including three never-before seen shades: copper orange mica, bayou blue
metallic and blazing blue metallic.
Buyers can also customize their Yaris by choosing from a menu of nearly
50 features to add unique style, utility and performance to their vehicle. For
example, air conditioning is available as a stand-alone option on models where
it is not standard equipment, and Toyota has made it extremely easy for owners
to upgrade the audio system on the CE and LE trim levels (the premium audio
system is standard equipment on the RS grade).
"The target buyer for Yaris values individuality and personal style,"
said Wearing. "They appreciate the chance to create a total package that's
uniquely their own."
Yaris will be sold in both 3- and 5-door models, and come in three trim
levels including CE, LE, and the sporty RS grade. Manufacturer's Suggested
Retail (MSRP) price for the 3-door Yaris with manual transmission will start
at just $13,580 for the CE trim level, $14,175 for the Yaris LE, and $16,880
for the 3-door Yaris RS. MSRP for the 5-door Yaris LE will be $14,910; at the
RS trim level, pricing will start at $17,615.
The new 2006 Yaris will also keep prices down at the pumps; the Yaris
with manual transmission uses just 6.9 L/100km city and 5.5 L/100km highway.
With the automatic transmission, fuel consumption is 7.1 L/100km city and
5.8 L/100km highway.
Canadian car buyers will experience the all-new Yaris in advance of
drivers in both Europe and the United States when it goes on sale here in
mid-October, taking the place of best-selling Echo Hatchback.

2006 TOYOTA YARIS HATCHBACK - PRODUCT DETAIL
--------------------------------------------

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND
----------------------
The Yaris was designed to achieve a new standard for vehicles in this
segment. Its energetic design, based on the principles of Vibrant Clarity,
maintains the compact body size but inside is a passenger compartment that
offers exceptional roominess in a space designed to feel airy and open.
Driving the Yaris reveals a new level of nimble handling and superior driving
stability, and safety performance is outstanding.

POWERTRAIN
----------
Lively and fun to drive, Yaris is equipped with a 106 horsepower,
1.5-litre, DOHC 4-cylinder engine with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-
intelligent) that provides excellent power and class-leading fuel economy.
Plenty of muscle and torque in the low to medium rpm ranges mean lively
response at all speeds, and the engine is mated to either a standard 5-speed
manual transmission or optional 4-speed electronically controlled automatic
transmission.
The automatic version is enhanced with a new uphill/downhill shift
control monitors throttle opening and vehicle speed to ensure that the Yaris
is always in the optimum gear for seamless performance when climbing or
descending a grade. A new flex lock-up control increases transmission
efficiency during acceleration and better manages fuel consumption during
deceleration to maximize fuel economy.

HANDLING AND MANEUVERABILITY
---------------------------
When developing the new Yaris, Toyota engineers set their sights on an
uncompromising design that would combine a sporty driving feel with excellent
stability and a comfortable ride.
The Yaris's suspension with speed sensing Electric Power Steering (EPS)
was developed specifically to meet these goals and take full advantage of the
new platform. A new L-arm MacPherson strut front suspension with front
stabilizer bar, and a new rear suspension with a highly rigid torsion beam
ensure excellent turning and straight-line stability.
Anti-dive and anti-squat geometry suppress changes in vehicle posture
during braking and acceleration. Shock absorbers with a newly developed valve
ensure smooth damping characteristics and the total effect is a driving
experience that is both exhilarating and composed.
For composed handling even when driven aggressively, the suspension is
tuned to provide a slight understeer effect. This offsets the potential
instability caused by quick steering inputs.
Long-stroke shock absorbers with a newly developed valve create
effortless damping, and the steering gear ratios have been modified to match
the new suspension geometry.
The result is a lively driving experience that combines stable control
with nimble response.

ROOMY, COMFORTABLE, CUSTOMIZABLE
--------------------------------
Yaris isn't just great looking; every element has been carefully
considered to make it functional as well as sporty and eye-catching. The
unique vertical arrangement of the instruments, for example, also creates more
leg room, and the Optitron meters provide excellent visibility. A tilt
steering wheel is standard equipment, offering adjustability of driving
positions for a wide variety of physiques. Rear seating space is among the
best-in-class, and the flat rear floor means three rear passengers all ride in
comfort. The frame and fabric of the new seats have been designed to make them
more comfortable and less likely to cause fatigue on long trips.
Generous rear cargo space is complemented by 12 smart storage spaces
within the cabin, designed to be convenient and easy to reach, especially
those intended for use by the driver.
The 2006 Yaris is available in a 3-door configuration with a choice of
CE, LE and RS trim levels, or as a 5-door model in either LE or RS trim.

The 3-door Yaris CE (MSRP $13,580) is fitted with standard:
- AM/FM/CD audio system with 2 speakers
- Tachometer
- Adjustable rear-seat headrests

- Generous passenger compartment storage, including cup holders,
seatback pockets, door map pockets, centre console box and 2-level

An LE package of options (MSRP $595) enhances the 3-door Yaris with:
- power remote exterior mirrors

To this, a "C" option package (MSRP $2,530) also adds:
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
- Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
- Air conditioning
- Power windows and doorlocks
- Remote keyless entry

The 3-door Yaris RS (MSRP $16,880) offers standard:
- 4-speaker AM/FM audio system with in-dash 6-CD changer and MP3

- Leather-wrapped steering wheel (and shift knob on models with manual
transmission)
- 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels with wheel locks
- Fog lamps
- Coloured outside mirrors, side skirts and rear spoiler

The 3-door RS can be further enhanced with a "B" option package
(MSRP $1,490), including:

- Power door locks
- Power remote exterior mirrors
- Adjustable B-pillar shoulder belt anchors
- Child protector rear door locks

A "B" package of options (MSRP $1,650) adds features to the 5-door LE
that include:
- Anti-lock Braking System
- Electronic Brake Force Distribution
- Air conditioning
- Power windows
- Remote keyless entry

The 5-door Yaris RS (MSRP $17,615) is equipped with standard:
- 4-speaker AM/FM sound system with in-dash 6-CD changer and MP3
capability
- Power door locks
- Sport-type front seats
- Sliding rear seats that can be folded flat to provide maximum cargo
area, or in a 60/40 combination to accommodate luggage and passengers
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel (and shift knob on models with manual
transmission)
- 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels with wheel locks
- Fog lamps
- Coloured outside mirrors, side skirts and rear spoiler

A "B" option package adds air conditioning, power windows and keyless
entry.
The new Yaris can also be customized by choosing from nearly 50
accessories that can be selected individually to create a totally unique
package. Air conditioning is available as a stand-alone option on models where
it is not standard equipment, and Toyota has made it extremely easy for owners
to upgrade the audio system on the CE and LE trim levels.
Because the target customer for Yaris tends to be highly net-savvy,
Toyota also offers them the chance to build their dream Yaris using the
accessory configurator at www.toyota.ca (available at time of launch), and
look at the results, inside and out, from a full 360 degrees. Customers can
price their selection on the 'Price Your Toyota' section of the website, then
take this information directly to a dealer, knowing exactly what they want and
how much it will cost.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE
-------------------------
The Yaris's engine, designed to provide excellent power and torque in the
low to medium rpm range for energetic driving performance, also provides
class-leading fuel economy. Yaris is rated as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle 2
(ULEVII).
Yaris is also designed to minimize the impact of the total vehicle life
cycle on the environment. Fewer materials that burden the environment are used
in the interior, and a water-based base coat is used on the body.

OUTSTANDING SAFETY
------------------
Yaris's advanced safety features include outstanding protection for both
occupants and pedestrians.
The body was created using Toyota's Minimum Intrusion Cabin System (MICS)
that provides excellent impact force absorption and dispersion to minimize
cabin deformation during a collision. In addition, the pedestrian-injury-
lessening body structure is designed to reduce head injuries to pedestrians.
Inside, occupants are protected with dual SRS front airbags and a new
Whiplash Impact Lessening (WIL) seat structure that helps reduce the reaction
force at the seatback and suppress tilting of the head and vertebrae. The
seats further improve safety by enhancing the driver's field of view, thanks
to the saddle-shaped headrest. Anti-lock brakes are available as an option.
The Yaris is designed to achieve the highest rating for crash protection.
Yaris is also provided with Toyota's no deductible, no transfer fee, New
Vehicle Warranty that covers the entire vehicle for 3 years/60,000 kilometres.
Power train components are covered for 5 years/100,000 kilometres, major
emission control components for 8 years/130,000 kilometres and corrosion
perforation for five years with unlimited distance.
Toyota also provides 24-hour Roadside Assistance for all models. Help is
just a phone call away at 1-888-TOYOTA-8. Roadside emergency services include
battery boost, lockout service, fuel delivery, tire change, winching, and even
towing. Optional Extended Care Protection (ECP) is also available, which
includes travel planning and trip interruption assistance, vehicle rental
help, lubrication maintenance, and mechanical protection for up to
6 years/200,000 km of 17 major mechanical component groups.

With the money Toyota has and for any company to even compete against the Korean companies in this segment, this car does look like it has crap material quality. Its a huge disappointment when leading companies with money can't even come up with a quality entry level car- can see the huge difference between the euro and us model. I'm sure the Honda fit will be a much better car because thats the way Honda has always done things- big or small it falls under the same company policy...

No more clowning around
By John DiPietro Email
Date posted: 12-15-2005

We'll be blunt; we haven't given much love to the Toyota Echo, a car that was non-affectionately dubbed "The Clown Car" by this writer. Its tall roof and pudgy body made us think a dozen goofballs with frizzy orange hair and jumbo shoes would spill out when the doors opened. Mediocre cabin trim and shaky handling didn't help either.

Now comes the Echo's overdue replacement, the 2007 Toyota Yaris. With the new Yaris (yes, the name Echo is gone), Toyota steps things up in every way. Rather than having the two-door liftback and four-door essentially differing only in body style, two separate teams developed each version of the Yaris, giving them different personalities.

Aww, isn't it cute?
Look at the Liftback and you can't help but smile at its cuteness. It reminded us a little of the Yaris' cousin, the Scion xA, a car that one editor referred to as looking like "a big-headed toddler." Look at those big eyes and that happy face. Although shorter than the outgoing Echo coupe, the Yaris Liftback has a wheelbase over 3 inches longer (96.9 inches vs. 93.3 inches).

The four-door aims for a mini sport sedan look and is now longer (169.3 inches vs. 164.6 inches), lower (56.7 inches vs. 59.1 inches) and wider (66.5 inches vs. 65.4 inches), which relieves it of the comic proportions of the Echo sedan. As with the Liftback, the sedan's wheelbase was also stretched (100.4 inches vs. 93.3 inches). The net result is a handsome little sedan that doesn't scream "entry-level" like the Echo.

With a coefficient of drag of just 0.29, both the sedan and Liftback slip through the air with ease, promising a quieter ride and greater fuel economy at freeway speeds.

Fraternal, not identical twins
So different are the two Yaris models that they don't even share dash panels. The Liftback has three gloveboxes — two on the passenger side and one on the driver side, a benefit of the center-mounted instruments. To optimize passenger and legroom, the Liftback also features reclining rear seats that slide nearly 6 inches fore and aft.

The sedan's cabin has a more upscale feel with features like "Optitron" illuminated gauges, a two-tone color treatment, height-adjustable front seats and, on the LE, a 60/40-split rear seat with a fold-down center armrest.

Both Yaris body styles can be had in either base CE or fancier LE trim levels. The CE comes with air-conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers and dual vanity mirrors. Move up to the LE and an AM/FM/CD system (with an MP3 audio jack), rear defroster, 60/40-split rear seat and 15-inch wheels (replacing the 14s) are added. Optional in both Yarii are a convenience package (includes power windows, locks and mirrors; cruise control; and antilock brakes), and side and side curtain airbags. The sedan is also available in an S version, essentially a package for the LE sedan that adds lower body skirting and an "S" badge.

Smooth as a sewing machine
Both models are powered by the same 1.5-liter, 16-valve inline four that's used in the Scion xA and xB models. Equipped with variable valve timing (VVT-i), this engine makes 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm. It's mated with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox, but the EPA says it gets about the same mileage with either — 34 city/40 highway for the manual and 34/39 for the automatic.

We sampled both powertrains, and found the manual gave the Yaris a peppy, sporty feel. The engine stays smooth and vibration-free, even at high rpm. We took the engine to redline again and again and never felt like we were thrashing the car. Both the gearshift and clutch action are light and the gearshift knob doesn't vibrate, whether at idle or while running at 75 mph on the freeway.

As expected, the automatic sapped some of the fun, as off-the-line performance is blunted. But like the manual, it has decent midrange pull and has no problem getting up to and cruising at 75-80 mph on the highway.

We laid into the brakes hard a few times from around 55 mph and found an easily modulated pedal with reassuring braking power. All Yarii have disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear, but the cars we drove had the optional ABS.

At highway speeds we noticed a difference between the Liftback and the LE sedan. The sedan was quieter while the Liftback let more road rumble into the cabin. Both absorbed freeway expansion joints without drama, adding to the relaxed demeanor at cruising speeds.

Well-sorted suspension
With the suspension stiffened by 47 percent over the Echo, the Yaris feels buttoned-down and dare we say fun on curvy roads. The suspension design is nothing earth-shattering — tried-and-true MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam out back. But with redesigned bushings, a single upper mounting point for the front struts (rather than three as in the Echo), the firmer calibrations and a lower center of gravity, the Yaris doesn't even feel related to its wallowing forebear. There's no slop in the Yaris' handling and the revamped suspension and longer wheelbases provide a smoother ride.

Helping to optimize fuel-efficiency is the electric power steering setup that takes away the engine-driven hydraulic pump of traditional power steering systems. Unlike some other systems of this kind, the Yaris' has a natural, crisp feel with even weighting.

Just in time…
As good as it is, the 2007 Toyota Yaris (which goes on sale in April 2006) will be facing some strong competition. Firm pricing was not yet available as of press time, but Toyota execs indicated that it will start under $13,000. With the recently introduced and well-built 2006 Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent and forthcoming 2007 Honda Fit and Nissan Versa, Toyota has replaced the Echo just in time. With a healthy dose of upgrades in style, handling and refinement, the Yaris puts Toyota in good standing for the upcoming economy car war.

And I thought Honda took a bit of a gamble with the dash on the Civic - that center stack might be a bit too much of a gamble for Toyota.

Certainly better looking that the Echo.

The fact that they keep on gambling on it suggests it's here to stay...

I think the center stack holds down costs. It makes it inexpensive to configure left and right hand drive versions of the car for different markets.

That is an odd, odd looking little pokemon of a car. The interior design leaves nothing to be desired. It looks like it was to launch vertical, and travel in outer space.

I was thinking gas mileage wasn't great considering what the new civc gets and how this is a segment under the civic.

It's obvious that's why they did it - but I'm not sure how well it will be recieved.

The sedan's face looks a lot better than the Liftback, even though I see a lot of Mazda in it. The interior is pretty decent for a 13K car, except for the center mounted gauges.

On second look - I wonder how long before someone sues Toyota for putting the speedo (and other stuff) too far off eye sight line and causing a crash?

I saw 3 of the 2 door version here in Puerto Rico today. It doesn't look too bad in person. I'd take it over an Echo any day.

Arrow USA Today Review

Yaris Pleasant Enough 2 Ride
ATLANTA — Yaris is a small, economy car that will replace the unloved Echo in Toyota's U.S. lineup this spring, and while it is pleasant enough behind the wheel, Yaris seems to fall short of Toyota's promise of a premium vehicle at a bargain price.
Two body styles of Toyota’s Yaris are offered in the USA, a four-door sedan and a “liftback.”

Final judgment must wait for specific pricing, which Toyota won't announce until closer to Yaris' March or April on-sale date. But $12,000 to start is a fair guess, and for that price you won't get a radio, possibly not a tachometer, definitely not anti-lock brakes. (Photos/audio: Toyota Yaris with Healey's comments)

Most of the desirable features are available, for a price. If that strategy bumps Yaris up to, say, $14,000 outfitted as most Americans like, then it will be within a few hundred dollars of bigger, more refined cars such as Honda Civic and Toyota's own Corolla. Not incidentally, Corolla's fuel-economy rating is better than Yaris', and Civic's is nearly as good, even though both are bigger, heavier and have more-powerful engines.

The industry axiom is "small cars, small profits," and it's often true. So why bother introducing a subcompact into the size- and space- and power-loving American market? Because 45% of small-car owners — the most of any segment — eventually trade up to pricier, more-profitable models known as premium compacts, such as Civic and Corolla, according to the Power Information Network. And within that group, a significant number — 30%-plus is common — stay with the same brand, PIN data show.

In other words, buyers captured by small cars don't require as much expensive persuading to get them to move up through the same car company's more-profitable models.

Hoping to leverage Yaris' appeal, Toyota says it put two separate engineering teams to work on two versions of Yaris — a four-door sedan and a two-door hatchback — and kept them apart to encourage independent design.

Toyota calls the hatchback a "liftback," sensing that "hatchback" remains a pejorative term in the U.S. market.

The sedan is the bigger car, outside and in. The rear seat in the hatchback slides fore-aft to maximize either legroom or cargo space. With the rear seat all the way back, there is plenty of adult legroom. That's remarkable in such a small vehicle.

The main test vehicle was a two-door hatchback equipped with a five-speed manual transmission.

Impressions from zipping around this burgeoning metropolis and environs:

• Steering. Good. It's Toyota's new electric system that saves fuel because the engine doesn't have to turn a belt that drives a hydraulic power-steering pump. It's hard to get an electric setup tuned just right; too darty or uneven. But Yaris' seems on target. On-center feel was good. The car stayed pointed straight ahead without the fussy little steering wheel motions required by some machines. And turning feel was smooth and responsive.

• Shifting. The manual gearbox operated smoothly with little of the rubberiness associated with inexpensive cars. The light-touch clutch made start-stop traffic pretty easy.

• Handling. Crisp enough in corners to be interesting and entertaining. But your Mini-driving friends won't be jealous.

• Comfort. Adequate, especially by the low standards of economy cars. Seats feel good, not always a given in low-price cars. Relationship among steering wheel, pedals and controls is about right, not a given even in expensive cars.

• Quirks. The gauges aren't all illuminated with the same color. Some gauges are digital readouts while others are conventional analog designs. Seems a visually messy hodgepodge. Main gauges are on top of the dashboard in the center, instead of directly in front of the driver. That's getting common, and automakers say it allows the driver to glance at the gauges without shifting focus from the road ahead. It's not a look or an approach that everybody will like.

Yaris is Toyota's best seller in Europe, where competent handling and a satisfying driving feel are more important than lavish appointments.

But the U.S. market, which doesn't much like small cars in the first place, might be slower to embrace one that feels good to drive but lacks expected features.

The biggest threat to Yaris, though, could be two other small, Japanese cars hitting the market at about the same time: Honda Fit and Nissan Versa. They should be priced similarly to Yaris and might offer more for the money.

Versa, for example, has more passenger and cargo space, will be available as a four-door hatchback instead of just a two-door hatch, has a more powerful engine yet appears to be as fuel-efficient as Yaris. Nissan says its testing shows Versa with automatic transmission is good for 38 miles per gallon in combined city-highway use. Yaris with an automatic has a government rating of 39 mpg in combined driving. Less is known about Honda's Fit, but the point is, wait for all three to be in showrooms before deciding.

2007 Toyota Yaris

• What is it? Small, front-wheel-drive, economy car replacing the Echo in Toyota's U.S. lineup. Available as a four-door sedan or a hatchback, which Toyota calls liftback. The two versions are different cars, developed by different engineers. Manufactured in Japan.

• How soon? On sale in March or April.

• How much? Exact pricing isn't set. Toyota says starting price will be "well under $13,000."

• Who'll buy? Mainstream younger buyers (well, younger by Toyota's fogey-ish standards) who want economy cars but think that those offered by Toyota's Scion youth brand are too radical. Toyota expects Yaris buyers to be 35 to 45 years old, 45% of them single, 45% college-educated. Median annual household income should be $45,000 to $65,000.

• How many? 70,000 a year.

• What's the drivetrain? Same as in a Scion xA or xB: 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine rated 106 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, 103 pounds-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm; five-speed manual transmission (standard); four-speed automatic (optional).

• What's the safety gear? Basic belts and front air bags. You have to pay extra for front-seat, side-impact bags; front- and back-seat head-curtain air bags; anti-lock brakes.

• What's the rest? Standard features include air conditioning; power steering; tilt-adjustable steering column; interval wipers; P175/65-14 tires on steel wheels. Many common features such as stereo; cruise control; power locks, windows, mirrors cost extra.

• How big? Sedan and hatchback differ considerably. Sedan is 169.3 inches long, 66.5 inches wide, 56.7 inches tall on a 100.4-inch wheelbase. Hatchback is 150 inches long, 66.7 inches wide, 60 inches tall on a 96.9-inch wheelbase.

Passenger space is listed as 87.1 cubic feet in the sedan, 84.1 cubic feet in the hatchback. Cargo space is listed as 12.9 cubic feet in the sedan's trunk, 12.8 cubic feet in the hatchback's cargo area behind the back seat. All versions weigh about 2,300 pounds.

• How thirsty? Manual transmission models are rated 34 miles per gallon in the city, 40 on the highway, 37 in combined driving. Automatic transmission models are rated 34/39/36. Regular-grade (87 octane) fuel is specified.

• Overall: Reasonably pleasant to drive and relatively roomy, but unimpressive fuel economy for the small size and poorly equipped unless you spend extra.
