Post Report: No new Supra; IS convertible delayed; New SC in 2008?

Heh, Toyota's decision with the Supra is like Rogers Clemens and his IwannaplayIdontwannaplay...?

There will not be a new Toyota Supra, according to trade publication Automotive News. "All the rumors of the two-passenger sports car's return are false," a new report says. Instead, it looks like the Lexus LF-A will be Toyota's only supercar (pictured). The publication also said Toyota has delayed the launch of the Lexus IS convertible, because there were concerns over its competitiveness. Originally slated to debut alongside the IS coupe, the cabriolet may now be delayed until 2008. Lastly, the report indicates a successor to the Lexus SC 430 will arrive in 2008, using the IS/GS platform and a 4.6-liter V8. It will apparently feature "proportions and stance similar to those of a BMW 6 series."

Like promises from other makers also, don't believe anything till it shows up in the dealer showrooms.

SC the size of a 6 series?

The LFA basically will now be positioned as an XLR. In other words, a luxury Vette.

So in that case, Toyota thought, there is no room for a Supra.

Bummer ... I wonder if they could just improve the J2Z block a little bit to save a bundle on costs and throw together a nice frame over the 2IS (2nd gen IS) chassis? Make it really light so huge HP wouldn't be necessary (eg Lotus). Kinda sad to think that Toyota is totally out of the sports car game (ie Celica, MR2, Supra, etc ... )

Don't believe the hype.

Unless hardware (concept, prototype) makes the rounds by the winter auto show circuit no way anything shows up in 08.

Looks like a rehash of the article from earlier this year...

Make it rwd, light, cheap and fast, and I'd be interested....

I'd gladly take back anything I've said about Toyota. Just gimme the damn car, and don't make it an overweight disposable transportation appliance.

Post Report: Toyota to revive Supra with hybrid sports car...

Okay. Make up their minds...please.

From Leftlane...

Japan's No. 1 automaker is planning a Toyota-branded version of forthcoming Lexus LF-A supercar (pictured) as a successor to the popular Supra sports car, according to a new report by the U.K.'s AutoExpress magazine. The car will reportedly feature a modified version of the 341 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 hybrid found in the Lexus GS450h.

The rumors directly contradict a report from August by trade publication Automotive News indicating there would be no successor to the Supra. At the time, the news organization said "all the rumors of the two-passenger sports car's return are false."

The AE report does not specifically say if the car will use the Supra nameplate, but it suggests a concept will appear at the Detroit auto show in January. In late August, Autocar said Toyota would build a hybrid version of the LF-A in addition to the widely expected V10 model. Might the rumored hybrid LF-A be sold as a Toyota Supra instead? Time will tell…

all i can say anymore about the damn supra is I will believe it when i see it...

A prototype concept of a LF-A that is no where near production ready doesn't really do anything for me.

Show me a test mule flying around like the Skyline in a G35 body or something to that effect and i will believe it.

Replacing the firm's famous sports car - which disappeared from Toyota's line-up in 1996 - the new model will go on sale in 2008, and takes styling inspiration from luxury brand Lexus' forthcoming LF-A.

But while that car will use a 500bhp 4.8-litre V10 when it arrives in 2009, Toyota's new model gets a tweaked version of the Lexus GS450h's 341bhp 3.5-litre V6 hybrid powertrain, giving it a unique combination of performance and economy.

With rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed sequential auto, the supercar should cover the 0-60mph sprint in less than five seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 170mph, yet return 30mpg. The mach-ine has already been seen testing at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

A concept is scheduled to appear at the Detroit Motor Show in January, while the production version is expected to be priced to match Nissan's new GT-R.

secrecy is "good" i guess - keeps the public on the edge and competitors guessing. But at least let us know if their building the supra or not...

btw, greenmonster, i thought the LF-A has been officially approved. Weren't there some mules caught testing?

But I'm much more interested in an "affordable" vehicle like the supra

Here's the thread on the lf-a:

Toyota has been totally lame since 1998 when they stopped importing the last Supra. They could use a new RWD hi-powered GT car badly. Nissan/Infiniti has pretty much had that market on lockdown with the G35 coupe. (Theyre really the only Japan automaker that has a car like that anymore.)

Toyota, IMHO, will need to release a 'halo sportscar' to their line-up. They have a pile of money ... they have virtually zero marketshare of the coupe market (ie Solara is on its way out so what other 2 door do they have in their line-up? Scion has a small niche market, I assume) so it seems as if it needs something to 'compete' with Honda (S2k, even Civic coupe!) and Nissan (Z).

Toyota's strategy doesn't make any sense ... (it's all about making money, I realize, but they can whip out something fairly fast, wouldn't you think?)

Give me a the go ahead and I'll get right on it

I'll take the SC430 platform, strip it down, make it a hardtop coupe, get rid of the v8, raid the toyota parts bin, and offer it with the 3.5L v6 (306hp) and the 2.5L v6 (204hp)... heck, I guess I could offer it with the v8 too, but then I'd have to charge 65-70K for it (compareable to the sc430 price).

Doesn't seem like it would take much, but alot of these big companies can't make decisions as quickly as they need to....
