https://www.motor1.com/news/303519/t...formance-line/

After years of waiting, the fifth-generation Supra is finally upon us. It debuted a little over two weeks ago at NAIAS in Detroit and it looks like Toyota Racing Development is eager to show how it can amplify the sports coupe. Come February 9 and we’ll get to see a TRD-branded concept of the new Supra at the Osaka Automesse held in the Kansai region in Japan. If you haven’t heard of this annual auto show before, it’s like the JDM equivalent of SEMA and 2019 will represent the 23rd edition of the event.

Known by its full name as the Toyota GR Supra Performance Line Concept TRD, the showcar will give us a taste of things to come as far as the many ways Supra owners will be able to upgrade their cars with TRD goodies. The concept’s reveal comes as a natural follow-up to a statement made in Detroit by Andrew Coetzee, Group Vice President - Product Planning & Strategy at Toyota Motor North America. In an interview with Motor Trend, he revealed the plan is to offer a variety of warranty-backed TRD items. In addition, there might be a Supra TRD special edition sooner or later in the model’s life cycle.

Complementing the TRD upgrades will be additional items carrying the GRMN (Gazoo Razing Meisters of Nürburgring) badging. Speaking of which, Toyota has already confirmed plans for a high-performance Supra GRMN, so the model’s future looks bright for enthusiasts. That being said, Coetzee did admit during the same interview the company has “rather modest volume expectations” given the current weak demand for sports cars.

Details about the forthcoming Supra Performance Line Concept TRD are not available at this point, but we’ll probably see some changes to the body and minor hardware tweaks for the suspension and brakes. We wouldn’t hold our breath for a power boost over the standard 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft (495 Nm) of torque, though.

I just feel bad for the guys who think they're buying a reliable Toyota when in reality they're buying a BMW with a Toyota badge... Come to think of it, that is AF and will empty your wallet without the pussy.

I think there are some major differences between the criticism for R35 and Supra.

While many criticized R35 for its ugliness but no one could deny its performance and remember this was back in 2008.... It literally smoked every car under $300k in 1/4 mile and on the track.
Supra on the other hand, not only it downsized to a Z4 size, it uses a detuned version of the Z4 engine and a wannabe BMW interior that is not as fancy as Z4's. So it is just an inferior Z4.... For a car that carries Supra's name... It is just not right.

I am not even talking about its looks yet.

As ugly as R35 GTR is ( i think it looks good), if i see one behind me on the freeway, I move over. This Supra? Meh... i can hang

Still feel like it's a lot of overreaction. People hated the R35 when it was first revealed. Except the R35 is actually ugly

Anyway, TL;DR of the video
  • Vehicles share components like drivetrain
  • Toyota engineers placed great emphasis on reliability
  • Both engineering teams developed the vehicle dynamics entirely separately. BMW didn't know how the Supra drove, and Toyota didn't know how the Z4 drove.

If you want a Z4, just go buy a Z4

I personally have no issue with them using BMW engine... many exotics also use AMG engines... But Toyota should have tuned it or modify the engine to make it their own.. instead of DETUNE it and make it slower.
If this was called MR2 or Celica... Sure.....

Will there be a reflash or tune available for it, it is Toyota's ECU and tune ?

My guess is that because you can buy the parts from a Toyota dealership, they'll be cheaper just because of that. Unfortunately most of the crowd driving the Z4 will know or care about this.

I just remember reading that newer Toyotas are a PITA to tune because the ECU is hidden in Alcatraz.

^ Supra is basically a Z4 with some tuning on the suspension.... ironically most of the suspension also share with Z4..... So i am not sure how much i am buying the different dynamic statement.

It is not Toyota's ECU... it is BMW's. The engine bay will be almost identical with Z4. It will be easy to crack since B58 has been around since 2016 and this is just a updated version of B58.... So if they could tune 340, it would not take them long to start tuning the Z4/Supra.

I think the difference is around $10k.... but Z4 has more power/torque and it is a convertible. So technically, the same price

and it has a better interior....

This is Supra's interior. I can't tell which part(s) belong to Toyota.

So... The Supra is the new SC430... Not a bad car, but just not worth it... Who wants a Bimmer without the badge? It's gonna break like a Bimmer, might as well pay the small premium for the performance and status, that way, it will all be woth it

The Supra is a hardtop, at least. It is quite a bit lighter than the Z4 as well.

...

Who am I kidding. I would get a Cayman over the Supra 100% of the time Roughly the same price, lighter by a couple hundred pounds, mid engined, it comes in manual and looks way better than the Supra. The Supra doesn't even start any cheaper than the Z4.

Maybe the pricing is on the 6-cylinder Supra will further separate it from its competition, but I doubt it. I too am surprised they didn't tune it to make more power. Lastly, the ZF 8HP is one of the best auto transmissions out there, but still... no manual yet?

WTF kind of new Cayman is $50k? You're looking at around $65k-$70k for a Cayman with any level of options and that's not even the Cayman S...

Worth it? Probably but it's certainly not the same price.

I just went on Porsche's site and the 718 starts at $57k.

I never said they were the same price, you're the one that's misunderstanding

I'm one of the few MKIV owners not losing my mind over this car. I don't like or hate it. With this new Supra Toyota has shown us who they are and what they have become. My guess is that there was a limited budget to invest so partnership was the only option. They wanted to keep it I6 so developing a new engine just for Supra wasn't an option unless they planned to share it with some of the Lexus models. There's the V6 TT in the LS500 that could have been used for a new MKV but final cost of car may have been more and again they wanted to keep it I6. I wish car was "bigger" but with the Lexus LC and RC GT coupes it may have been hard for Toyota to add another GT coupe and how would it be priced compared to those other 2. Consumer trends are now about CUV's and SUV's less sedans being sold much less sports cars. I've accepted the fact that MKIV Supras were anomalies in regards to how far they could be pushed power wise yet still be reliable this new car only time will tell but I'm not getting my hopes up.

They could have used the interior from the Lexus IS instead.

Yes, it starts at $57k...until you pick ANY option. Then it rapidly climbs. I think I read that the average MSRP of a Cayman these days is ~$70k-$75k.

Tell me more about the V6 Supra, is it the 2GR-FSE from the IS350? If so, that may be more reliable in the long run and we know that engine is plenty powerful for daily driving....

But I'd just get an IS350 then...

What V6 Supra?
Pretty sure the only V6 comment was a hypothetical about the TTV6 in the LS500.

I'm well aware of how Porsche nickel and dimes customers with options and pricing. I pretty much did all the research and cross shopping compact-ish luxury SUVs for my sister. She looked at different builds and was like "okay, that one"

I feel like it's fair to base it off of what we know now, and not hypotheticals. Nobody knows what the average Supra will cost yet, or even how much the I6 will start at. In my mind, once it's released the Supra will undoubtedly be compared to the Cayman.

Toyota Racing Development adds wings ‘n’ things to A90 Supra

Just as it promised last week, Toyota Racing Development has had its way with the brand-new Supra.

Unveiled with surprisingly little fanfare at Japan’s ‘Osaka Auto Messe’, the ‘Performance Line Concept’ gives us an idea what kind of parts TRD will eventually offer for the new BMW-based coupe. It’s wearing skirts and spoilers made from carbon fibre, plus something called a ‘door garnish’. Sounds delicious.

All these things are claimed to improve aerodynamics, while lighter-weight 19in alloy wheels “tell quality to the road surface without excessive vehicle performance”, in Toyota’s Google Translated Japanese words. We think this means they’re better.

TRD doesn’t say whether it’s done anything to the Supra’s innards. It will eventually, no doubt, but it looks as though this concept was done purely to show off imminent aesthetic mods.

As a reminder – the Supra gets a 3.0-litre straight-six from BMW that gives 340bhp/369lb ft and a 4.3sec 0-62mph time. It will also be available with 2.0-litre turbo fours with either 197bhp/236lb ft or 258bhp/295lb ft, but they haven’t been confirmed for Europe.

I have realized the front end is the weakness of this car. That shot from the rear three quarters actually looks good to me.

And why the hell isn't there a manual option?

This new "Supra" seems to be too much like a Nissan 370Z and a super car merged. It's not a simple sports car. It's a little too overkill the more I look at it.

I want to like and lust after this car, but they really dropped the ball on the production model from the concept. That Gonzo schnoz front hoodline needs to be addressed better. Rear and side angles look pretty good still.

The styling on the new Supra is starting to grow on me a bit. I personally would love to have seen it with a 2UR-GSE motor.

After a very long absence and over a decade of anticipation, the new Toyota Supra finally entered the scene last month at the Detroit Auto Show. Since then, there’s been more than a few people criticize the Supra’s engine. It’s not bad by any stretch – the 335-horsepower turbocharged inline-six fits perfectly with the Supra’s I6 pedigree, including the infamous 2JZ mill that helped the previous-gen model ascent to legendary status. Rather, the criticism stems from the fact that the new engine isn’t a product of Toyota, but BMW. To be blunt, the German partnership for the Supra’s powertrain has Toyota purists furious.

As such, we knew a 2JZ-swapped Supra was inevitable but we didn’t expect to see a dedicated, full-on swap kit appear so soon. Never the less, California-based CX Racing dropped a rendered photo on its Facebook page recently, showing a new Supra with an old 2JZ under the hood and a promise that a complete kit would be coming soon for pre-order. A quick check of CX Racing’s homepage doesn’t reveal any additional information, but we can see that the company offers all kinds of parts, upgrades, and engine swap components for a variety of vehicles.

Curiously, the comments section on that post isn’t filled with glory and praise. Many people point out that the Bimmer-sourced mill in the fifth-gen Supra – which is shared with the BMW Z4 – is a capable engine in its own right. Underneath the Z4’s hood the 3.0-liter engine is tuned to make 382 hp, so presumably more power for the Supra is easy to unlock. The big question is whether or not the engine can hold up to insane levels of boost that made the 2JZ such a popular engine for tuners.

In the meantime, Toyota says the new car with 335 hp will sprint to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and we suspect that will be fast enough for most new Supra owners – for a little while at least. And for those who absolutely demand a Supra with a storied Toyota mill under the hood, it appears your wishes for a plug-and-play swap kit have already been granted.
