Toyota recalling Siennas

Toyota announced this week that it is recalling more than 345,000 Sienna minivans to fix seat belts that could fail during a crash. Siennas sold in the U.S. from the 2004-2005 model years are affected, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced.

Of course, everything with Toyota is a friggin option on an option package. I hate that. If I order the XLE they better already include some of those features...besides, the Odyssey looks much more agressive.

what's with all these "to give sporty impression" changes? ... it's a frigging family minivan! I would prefer safety features & comfort for the me & teh kids, not sportiness!

Much better front end than the current model.
Honda still has the superior looking mini-van.

Ah for a minivan it is pretty damn good, it and the honda are neck and neck right now

But damn 38k base price for the top end mondel Scary how expensive minivans are now.

Looks a lot better, but not as clean as the Odyssey. I just hate that V-hump on the hood.

But I actually think the Sienna trumps the Odyssey in the details. The Sienna has rear sunshades for both the second as well as the third rows - the Odyssey only has them for the second row. The brake light in the Sienna is LED - the Odyssey uses a conventional bulb and being behind one the other day I can say it's not as bright as it should be and lights up noticeably slower than LED ones.

It is a minivan so who cares what it really looks like. But comparing the Odyssey and the Sienna is difficult. There are some options on the Sienna that are not available in the Odyssey. Plus, when you do get comparable models you will find that the sale price of the Sienna is much less than the Odyssey; by thousands.

But in the end it is a child hauler, nothing more and so style goes out the window. It is all about convienence and safety.

And yes, I do own a Sienna XLE Limited. The only options I do not have are AWD and Nav. A comparable Odyssey at the time ended up being $7k more when factoring in the discount I got on the Toyota. I wanted the Odyssey to stay in the Honda family as I am not a Toyota fan. But $7k difference on a minivan was hard to pass up. Plus, I have HIDs and the Odyssey does not.

But I have to say to youngTL. The a la carte system of Toyota is insane, with about 1,000 different option packages. To wit a loaded Sienna winds up being several thousand $$$ over the price of an Ody T w/Navi/RES.

Wrong.

The top end 2006 sienna limited with all options (HT) lists for $40,210. The top of line touring lists for $39345. The price difference is $865.

But Sienna comes way more feature for $865 difference. HID, 3rd row sun shade, laser cruise control, one extra power outlet, power folding 3rd row seat, bluetooth. Other than 3rd row sunshade which is dealer installed on the Odyssey touring, all of them are MIA on the touring.

Odyssey has no advantage over sienna in terms of interior design/material, feature, quality, fit/finish, and price. Especially at top end model.

Oddyssey is over priced on the top end. Simple as that.

I agree in the end. Yes I think the Odyssey is a better looking minivan with other qualities that I prefer like the engine, but in the end, if it comes down to being practical about your purchase, these things go out the window.

And I know Honda dealers love to not deal with this minivan which makes the Toyota with their incentives and lower starting price more attractive. In the end if I was just starting out with a family, I'd definately go with the mazda 5( http://www.familycar.com/RoadTests/Mazda5/Photos.htm ), older kids probably the Toyota due to it being less of a hasle to buy unless cash flow was excessive and then I'd just get whatever, odyssey.

I disagree. Option for option, when comparable, the Sienna is close. But when you factor discount, the Sienna is much less. Damn them Honda dealers for not moving on the price.

We have some friends that purchased the Odyssey Touring this spring and was fully loaded. They paid MSRP due to no haggling allowed by the delaer and the end price was about $42k. Our Sienna, which doesn't have Nav but does have HIDs and adaptive cruise, etc. cost us $33k. That is a significant difference for the minimal difference in amenities.

Plus, and as mentioned, the Sienna really is the Lexus of minivans. We went from a BMW to a Lexus RX300 to the Sienna and found the materials and fit-n-finish to be on par with premium brands.

Remind me not to buy an Ody in Woodstock, Georgia (or Fremont, Ca) because, I was quoted a price of $35k from my local Honda Dealer via Instaquote for a Touring Navi/RES. At the time just prior to the 3G Ody's debut, the Sienna XLE Limited on the lot of DCH Toyota (South Brunswick NJ) MSRP'd @ $43,XXX w/ Navi and AWD. And it was Toyota that wasnt going to budge on price. (wife as witness)

Incidentally, I was also quoted $31k for the EX-L w/Nav/RES by Open Road Honda. Seems like you and chiawei will need to venture into the Garden State if you want a good deal on the Ody 'cause y'aint gettin' it where ya at.

Different markets can be like that.

This area is Odyssey heaven and I guess Toyota wants to cut into that. But the Sienna you looked at was AWD which isn't available on the Odyssey.

New 2011 Toyota Sienna

Just saw this on Car and Driver and Edmunds.

I think it looks a lot better than the current Sienna. The regular model is OK (I don't like the grille), but SE trim seems quite nice. Who knows, the SE may actually drive like a Honda?

Well the thread was about 2005. I guess this is the way this site works. Different than other auto forums. A bit weird.

Just in Auto News. Have a look at some of the other threads. Some began way back in 02-03 and keep being updated. Much easier to search that way.

I like the rear reclining seats that get extendable footrests. Must be great for long trips. Plus they get a 16-inch lcd monitor.

Funny that I have no recollection of that back-and-forth with Scalbert some four years ago.

But, . The wife and I have fallen out of the minivan spell, especially since getting the MDX. I can't help but look at that pic and have a 'lipstick on a pig' perspective on it.

A friend of our bought a Sienna this year. compared to all the CUVs out there, minivan just has so much more room.

Wonder what Honda plans with the new Odyssey.

Unhappy

Interior looks more truck like than Minivan kind ... if this is what production Sienna is going to be then Odyssey should have no competition. Exterior seems like an improvement but nothing too fancy. Seems like a new SE trim is debuting for Sienna to compete with the Odyssey driving experience. Other than that any other info on power plant updates?

There's gonna be a new 4 cylinder version that gets 19/26 MPG and Toyota said that the SE is sportier than the Odyssey.
