Toyota to Offer Smart Key Wristwatches

Nikkei.Net (subscription) reports that Toyota will introduce a Citizen Wristwatch with a smart key inside to lock and unlock cars automatically.

For new Toyota Crown car owners the fumbling for the car key has an end. The Toyota wristwatch (developed together with Citizen) transmits via a radio signal a code to unlock the wearers car.
There is also a button on the watch to manually lock or unlock the car from a distance. The Toyota wristwatch will be available starting next week in Japan, where else.
Toyota released now some details about the Toyota watch on their site (Japanese).

Nifty idea, although I often forgot my watch more often than I forget my car keys.

Citizen's a pretty nice watch and all, but some people don't want to trade in their tag's or rolexes just so they can start their car.

they should make a "module" that fits on the backside of a watch...like a chip or something that someone can implant on their watch...so people can use any watch they like.

Lame. People already walk away from their keyless ignition vehicles with the keys in their pocket because a relative/friend/etc is taking the car. This will be even easier to forget.

Seems like the future, pretty soon we'll have a microchip inserted under the skin.

I don't see this catching on... not every Toyota driver is going to like Citizen's designs.

This could be true but they could produce lots of designs with the same movement. This begs a question men/women in Europe and to a lesser extent the US take great pride in their time pieces, I don't remember seeing a lot of exotic time pieces in Asia when I have been there (except for fakes for sale) can anyone shed some light on this. Point being it might fly there if they view watches in a more utilitarian light.

Don't think it will be sold outside Japan.
