Lexus LC-F Concept Unveiled

What do you guys think of the design direction for the 2006 IS 350 GT? Looks like a speedster. I would like to see how this is translated to a 4 door sedan. At least it is a more progressive design than the TL and RL.

That car is sick. I want one, too bad they'll never come out looking like that! Guess it's only a matter of time before they finally replace the IS...can't wait to see what Lexus comes up with!

Here is the text to the link.

Forgot to mention that this concept has a High-Output Double Overhead Cam V8 with a 6-Speed Sequential Automatic Transmission and 20" wheels.

NEW YORK -- Lexus introduced its third new concept design within a year when it unveiled the LF-C luxury sports coupe concept car at the New York International Auto Show today. The LF series of concept vehicles launches an entirely new direction in styling for the Lexus brand. The LF-C hints at the direction Lexus is considering for the next generation IS 300 sports car.

"Design is one of the most important differentiating factors between any two products and the LF-C expands the current IS 300 sport sedan into a new category previously not addressed in the Lexus lineup," said Peter Renz, National Manager of Lexus in Canada. "The LF-C concept targets a younger buyer with a strong element of surprise."

The surprise is provided by stylists from the Calty Design Research Center in the form of a 4-position retractable hardtop in the LF-C. The unique hardtop design allows the car to transform itself at the touch of a button from a coupe to a convertible, to a targa or to a speedster, depending on the driver's mood. The powered top stows neatly into the trunk through a surprisingly minimal rear-deck opening.

A large rear wheel drive platform utilizes a high-output, front-mounted V8 engine with a six-speed sequential automatic transmission as the basis and motivating force for the LF-C. With an expanded wheelbase of 130 mm (5.1 in.), the LF-C is only slightly longer overall than the current IS 300. Significantly, the LF-C sits about 51 mm (2.0 in.) lower and is nearly 127 mm (5.0 in.) wider than the current IS 300. The broad stance and short overhangs strike an aggressive pose with ample dimensions to comfortably accommodate four adult passengers.

"We used a combination of convex and concave surfaces to control the balance of light and shadow on the car which creates this beautiful contrast of having sharp lines within the sculpted exterior surfaces," said Kevin Hunter, vice president of Calty Design Research, Inc. "The idea was to create a sense of strength and softness at the same time, adding an air of mystery."

Calty used long, integrated lines to simplify the overall form of the LF-C. The distinctive roof rail tapers as it moves forward from the rear, mimicking the sculpted theme of the main body. The extreme tapering of the main body shape from front to rear, which is then wrapped and interlocked by the rear fenders, is designed to show strength and power from every angle.

The interior communicates performance with drive-by-wire steering and Formula One inspired shifter and steering wheel with the gauges stacked along the steering column axis, ascending toward the base of the windshield. The gauges are transparent, with needles moving from the ring, rather than the centre.

A dynamic and flowing centre console, in a solid tapered form, runs the length of the interior. Displays and controls are hidden beneath this transparent console surface that is multi-layered, and creates a sophisticated, high-tech look and feel. The console is flanked on each side by arched, wing-like instrument panels situated low in front of the driver and passenger to create a feeling of openness.

Four lightweight individual bucket seats use slender shapes inspired by modern stemware to create a contrast of sport and elegance. The effect provides roominess along with a snug and secure feeling.

"We've known for some time that if Lexus ever prioritized styling the way we have product quality and advanced technology, we would once again change the luxury car playing field," said Renz. "The LF-C is a stunning example of how Lexus will address the future and change it at the same time."

Like many other concepts the real thing will be watered down a lot or never made if the feedback is not good.

I thought it was going to be something new...it's basically that other Lexus concept sedan that's been made into a convertible. I don't know what's going on with the Japanese and the American auto shows, they're not as innovative vs. what they showcase at the Tokyo auto show.

Another Toyota concept that's going to be so watered down by production, that no one in their right mind would actually say that the two cars are linked in any way.

One day, Lexus will come out with a car that I would choose over another besides the RX. But by than, I'll be able to afford a Euro car.

Junkster, whose not impressed with concepts unless it just totally defys all logic or is just too beautiful to ingnore.

A most intriguing concept indeed, but as Junkster said, Toyota doesn't exactly have a solid track record of producing concept cars that morph almost directly into production cars. Only Chrysler has managed to pull that off and do it pretty well.

Still, I say let's see them build it first and them we'll see.

Looks like they knocked off the S2000 in the front. I don't see what the big deal is about it other than the cool greenhouse (or lack thereof).

I like it overall - I've never been a coupe/roadster kind of guy.. but it looks good. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.. like people have been saying - Toyota/lexus have always toned down things a lot

Lexus recently says (Autoweek):
____________________________________
NEW YORK - Toyota Motor Corp. has given a strong hint at the design of its replacement for the Lexus IS 300 sport sedan - in the form of coupe.

The LF-C, which stands for Lexus Future Coupe, was unveiled at the New York auto show this month. The concept car suggests that the IS 300 successor will continue to compete as a pure sports vehicle, while Lexus' ES 330 will chase the "comfort luxury" segment.

Lexus General Manager Denny Clements says entry-luxury vehicles at other brands are too much of a compromise between the comfort and sports sides of the market.

The current IS 300 has been a sales disappointment. Lexus sold just 2,457 units through the first quarter, down 27.5 percent from the year-ago quarter. "The IS is important to us, but I don't see us selling 10,000 a month like BMW does with the 3 series," Clements says.

The current version is sold only as a sedan and wagon with one engine option. Clements wants the new edition to have sedan, coupe and convertible choices with multiple engine options.

While the LF-C has a V8 engine, Clements says the production version probably will not. More likely is a choice of small- and large-displacement six-cylinder engines, much like BMW does with the 3 series.

The LF-C design took 10 months from first sketch to completed concept, says Kevin Hunter, director of Toyota's Calty design studio in California.

While the hard points, interior and engineering are firm, the final exterior design is still being fine-tuned. It could be influenced by consumer reaction at the show, Clements says.

The LF-C takes a bigger design risk than previous Lexus concept vehicles.

Clements says the coupe is meant for younger buyers. "It can be polarizing, because the rest of the lineup can be universal," he says.

The production version of the IS coupe will arrive in late 2005. Unlike the last IS 300, which arrived earlier in Japan and Europe than in America, Clements says a global launch is planned.
________________________________________________

It would give TSX/TL segment healthy competition for sure. I do see a lot of IS300 in the Seattle area.

My thoughts exactly. First time I saw a picture of it, I thought it was an S2000 concept, then I saw the Lexus symbol.

Like the LF-S I think thic concept is just too out there for a relatively conservative Lexus. Sure they might take a few risks cause it's geared toward a younger crowd but I think it will toned down a lot by production. Just about every concept is.

I'm not sure what small and large displacement V6 they could use. I think the new 3L V6 out of the new GS will be the only choice. If you go down to the 2.5L range in disaplcement then in the Toyota parts bin you'll only find 4 bangers. If they want to compete with BMW they need to get sedan right first then worry about the coupe and other variants.

"The LF-C concept targets a younger buyer with a strong element of surprise."
...as in "surprise, you need a second mortgage on your house to afford this car."

Toyota/Lexus will forever have a reputation of thinking wild but acting mild. Mark my words; the production version of this car will be about as attention-grabbing as a Camry. Which isn't really a bad thing, as conservative styling means it never looks outdated.

Spy Shots: '06 Toyota Supercar - - Lexus or Toyota? Does it matter with 500 hp? - - by Brenda Priddy - - Source: The Car Connection

Toyota has been eyeing Nissan's success with the revived 350Z - and apparently, from spy pictures nabbed this week, it's been a little jealous of supercars like the Porsche Carrera GT, too. Toyota 's been caught testing what some insiders are calling the "TXS," a limited-production exotic that might be powered by a V-10 engine worth 500 hp.

Pictures show the TXS with enough cladding to disguise much of its shape, but clearly, this is no Celica or MR2-sized sportscar. Insiders suggest the car will tip in at less than 3000 pounds, giving its 500-hp powerplant (with 370 lb-ft of torque) a serious chance at catching the likes of the Porsche and Benz supercars. Top speed could reach 190 mph, the same league as the 550-hp Ford GT. Whether the drivetrain offers any version of Toyota 's hybrid technology is unknown.

Whether the final vehicle is sold as a Lexus or as a Toyota , it's likely that a limited production run of about 10,000 units is in order. Expect a debut at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show and an on-sale date soon after - with a pricetag well over $100,000.

How come the spy pics make it look more like an front-engine, RWD car rather than a mid-engine car? The length of the hood looks like the typical front engine car...

And whatever happened to the so-called hybrid supercar they were showing off this year?
