Not very good looking IMO. Toyota exterior styling continues to be pretty bland. I guess that's what their core customers want.

The next gen Pilot will be out in 2008?

The more I look @ it, the more un-pretty it becomes - esp that side shot. Looks like big station wagon to me. The exposed cup holders are gonna be a pain to clean out.

Interesting that it got the 5 speed transmission instead of 6 & that they dropped the 4 cylinder model.

I know, it's the same story with the Camry. They need to find a better color/pattern for the plood.

But the design in the new Highlander's interior is far better than the RAV4's. I'm not too crazy about the exterior.

The exterior is horrible. The interior looks really nice. Still, I can't get over the exterior. I'd take an Outlook first, I think.

4500lbs? Let me guess, the Sequia will get bigger too

That's the formula that doomed the big 3 - make each successive model bigger than the last and assume people will keep buying it.

2008 Toyota Highlander Preview - - by Marty Padgett (2007-02-07) - - Source: The Car Connection

Toyota calls its new 2008 Highlander "intelligent and advanced," a step away from traditional SUV styling. The new vehicle was introduced at the 2007 Chicago auto show on February 8.

Toyota says the new version is four inches longer and three inches wider than the first generation that went on sale in 2001. The new model also has an inch more ground clearance and three inches more in its wheelbase.

The new Highlander rides on a version of the platform underpinning the Camry and Avalon.

The Highlander has standard anti-lock brakes, with stability and traction control. Seven airbags are outfitted to the crossover vehicle, too. Active head restraints and pedestrian-safe hood design have been designed into the new vehicle.

Toyota promises the Highlander will have a more flexible interior, with a stowable second-row seat that allows easier access to the rear cargo area and third-row seat. The flexible interior arrangement has two second-row chairs that can be converted into a three-seat bench - the middle seat stows into the floor when not in use. The second-row seats also slide fore and aft 4.7 inches for more third-row seating room. The third-row seats fold flat for cargo, and the hatch glass is flip-up on most models.

A new 3.5-liter V-6 puts out 270 horsepower in the Highlander, up 55 from the previous 3.3-liter engine in the last edition.

Hybrid models will be offered in base and Limited versions, all with all-wheel drive, electronic steering, and stability control. Though the Highlander has gained 500 pounds in its latest growth spurt, the increased engine power - the Hybrid is now a 3.3-liter V-6 with battery and motors - horsepower is identical to the gas-only version at 270 hp. Toyota says the Hybrid's fuel economy stays the same at 31/27 mpg, though the figures were calculated by 2007 model-year methods, not by the updated EPA methods.

Other features on the new Highlander include a backup camera that doesn't require the buyer to order a navigation system; a Smart Start keyless ignition system on Limited and Hybrid models. Nineteen-inch wheels will be standard on some models. Options will include a six-disc, nine-speaker JBL audio system; leather seats; and the ability to delete the third-row seat.

Real-world economy

Perception and reality have proven to be sitting on either side of a large gap when it comes to the mileage of hybrid-electric vehicles. Various industry sources show that the promised fuel economy on vehicles like the newly-updated Toyota Highlander Hybrid can run as much as 30 percent less in real-world driving.

Toyota's goal, however, was to not only match the EPA-generated mileage numbers for Highlander, but get real-world performance closer to what's on the window sticker, said the automaker's Paul Williamson. That was no easy task, he stressed, considering the new crossover/SUV is larger and heavier than the vehicle it replaced.

To improve fuel economy, the '08 Highlander makes greater use of lightweight body and chassis materials, as well as a wind-cheating belly pan. Additionally, three steps were taken to make the hybrid drive system more fuel-stingy:

A new LED readout in the instrument cluster shows a motorist the best RPM range to drive within to yield the desired level of acceleration;

A new ECON button on the center console effectively smoothes out the way the engine management system responds to the throttle pedal. The effect is similar to what happens when an automatic transmission is in overdrive, explained Williamson, noting "you won't get as much engine response";

The third new feature is an EV mode button that will force the management system to drive on electric power only whenever possible, at speeds up to 25 mph and for up to one mile with a fully-charged battery.

Even with these new features, the 31/27 mpg rating for Highlander is expected to be trimmed back when the EPA officially switches to a new and more accurate testing process in 2008.

Styling takes some getting used to but this will no doubt be another great seller for Toyota. The interior looks great, the 3rd row appears usable and of course the 3.5L is more than enough.

So far the Acadia is IMO the best of the 3 row (30-40K) crossover's. we'll see how this compares.

I think the exterior styling is a huge let down. But you're right; people will by it simply because of it's badge, now mattre how ugly it is. Again, the interior is great. Honestly, I'd get the Acadia over this anyday; both have very nice interiors, and the Acadia's (and the Outlook) exterior is much nicer, IMO.

As long as Toyota won't mess up the next gen 4-Runner I'll be happy because I like the 4-runner.

This is a way to save $10-20K over a Lexus RX350 and GX470.

I absolutely agree with you. The previous Highlander was a miracle. You could get in one and disappear. The styling was so anonymous that even putting new wheels on it did not help (A friend tried to no avail). Now you will probably notice it, but that is not a good thing.

Toyota drops new four-cylinder in Highlander

August15

We’re just now starting to see how automakers are responding to higher prices at the pump. The common theme of increased emphasis on more efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines hasn’t been lost on Toyota, who announced today a 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine for the Highlander SUV.

With 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft. of torque, the new four-cylinder gives up quite a bit on paper compared to its robust six-cylinder big brother (with 270 horsepower and 248 lb-ft.), but Toyota is banking on high EPA estimates that would put it “among the leaders in fuel efficiency,” according to the Japanese automaker. EPA estimates will be released closer to the entry-level Highlander’s January, 2009, launch. For comparison, the 2008 V6 is rated at 18/24 mpg city/highway.

The four-cylinder will be mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission (while the V6 appears to retain its five-speed and the Hybrid retains its CVT). Toyota says the four-cylinder’s maximum towing capacity will be 3,500 lbs.

Though Toyota hasn’t released final equipment specifications, it has said that the four-cylinder Highlander will start as a two-wheel-drive model with two rows of seats. Toyota says that a power driver’s seat, an in-dash CD changer and a third row of seats will be optional, which suggests that the four-cylinder will be offered in the base trim level, which started at $27,500 with a V6 in 2008.

To give an idea of how amazing technology has become, Porsche had a 2.7L 4-cylinder in their 944 in the 1980s with about 162hp.

Now you can get a 2.7L in a SUV with +25hp. Just amazing.

That's a pretty good move on Toyota's part. The Highlander is no doubt ugly, but it offers what most consumers want in an cross over SUV. And this only makes it more competitive.

I'm just not sure if a 4-cylinder is up to the task of hauling so much mass. This thing is much bigger than the outgoing model.

Post Recall

Toyota Motor Sales Announces Equipment Recall
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
City News Service
TORRANCE, Calif. (CNS) -- Toyota Motor Sales, USA Inc. announced on Tuesday an equipment safety recall involving an optional accessory designed specifically for 2008 model-year Highlander and Highlander HV SUVS.

The recall, which is being carried out with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involves Toyota stainless steel exhaust tip retention clamps. The part is bolted onto a standard exhaust pipe, strictly for styling purposes.

"Due to improper heat treatment, the original clamp used to secure the stainless steel exhaust tip to the exhaust pipe may develop microscopic cracks," according to a Toyota statement. "If this occurs, the crack may expand, causing the clamp to break, and in the worst case the exhaust tip may fall off."

Toyota is aware of about 10 of the exhaust tip breakage cases in the United States.

No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved in the recall.

About 39,100 accessory kits may be affected, but all 121,000 owners of 2008-model Highlanders will be notified, according to the automaker.

A Toyota spokesman explained that only accessories installed at Toyota vehicle processing centers are traceable through a vehicle identification number. Some dealers installed the part on-site or sold it to owners, who installed it themselves, which the dealership cannot directly trace.

"We need to inform all 121,000 vehicle owners and ask them to look at their vehicle to see if this part is on there," said Toyota spokesman Brian R. Lyons. "If it is on there, we would like them to come into the dealership" for a free replacement.

Toyota will send notifications via first-class mail beginning in early May, he said.

Customers with questions or concerns should contact Toyota at (800) 331- 4331.

Toyota Highlander Press Release

All-New 2014 Toyota Highlander SUV Makes World Debut at 2013 New York Auto Show

- All-New Dynamic, Sleek Exterior Design
- Refined, Premium Interior with Advanced Technologies
- New Six-Speed Automatic with Sequential Shift on V6 Models
- Available Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive
- Available Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

NEW YORK, March 27, 2013 - - The all-new third-generation 2014 Toyota Highlander mid-size SUV made its world debut today at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

An all-new exterior design conveys both refinement and strength, complementing a new interior that will raise the bar in the mid-size SUV segment. With three-row seating for up to eight, an array of standard features, a host of available in-cabin technologies, and increased cargo capacity, the new Highlander will offer a nuanced balance of style, comfort and utility. The total package is capped off with three powertrain choices: a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine a powerful V6 with a new six-speed transmission that will produce excellent all-around capability, and a V6-powered Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain for enhanced mileage and fewer emissions.

Sophisticated, Dynamic Exterior is Sleek and Strong

Sophisticated and dynamic, the new Highlander features a progressive silhouette, a lower roofline for improved aerodynamics, and sculptured side-door panels. The exterior has grown in length by approximately three inches while width is increased one-half inch, conveying a sleek and strong appearance.

From the front, Highlander's hood merges with a redesigned trapezoidal grille, wraparound headlamps and deeply chiseled fenders for a more aggressive appearance.

The length of the profile, from the front fenders to the rear quarter panels, boldly stands out with sculptured wheel wells at the corners, allowing for prominently protruding wheels. The total package is capped off by a newly designed rear lift-gate with one-touch power open/close and driver selectable memory height settings, and taillights and bumper that exude style and strength.

Highlander's body structure will include high-strength steel in the front pillars for increased rigidity. Visibility has been improved through precise repositioning of the front A-pillars, while the size of the rear quarter glass has been increased to provide a wider view for driver and occupants.

Refinement is enhanced through improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) measures. Interior noise reduction is achieved through a 30 percent expansion of silencing insulation materials in the floor areas. Acoustic-type glass is used for the windshield to help reduce noise entering the cabin, and even the panoramic moonroof design works to help reduce wind noise, even when the moonroof is open.

Vibration is minimized through expanded coverage of the dash silencer, enhancements to body sealing, and the strategic placement of three hydraulic engine mounts. Improvements in the exhaust layout have been made for additional noise and vibration reduction.

Premium Interior Design with Advanced Functionality

Toyota engineers raised the bar on interior design for the mid-size SUV segment by adding even more refinement and functionality to the new Highlander. The 2014 model will offer a premium interior highlighted by increased spaciousness for up to eight people, and an array of standard comfort, convenience and technology features.

The new Highlander's interior utilizes premium materials to offer an upscale experience, with most models featuring standard contrast seat stitching. All Highlanders will come equipped with a soft-touch instrument panel; and silver-painted, satin, and chrome-plated accents that are thoughtfully placed throughout the interior. Wood-grain pattern trim can be found on the front dash and door trim for an added touch of elegance. Premium fabrics, available smooth and perforated leather-trim seats, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob add to Highlander's redesigned upscale interior. The adoption of a high quality knit roof lining and available second-row sunshades add to Highlander's refinement and comfort.

A new roll-top center console box with a dampened sliding door provides a comfortable armrest, or when fully opened is large enough to hold a large handbag. All Highlanders will feature a newly designed in-meter-cluster Multi-Information Display. Available ambient lighting around the front dash and doors add to the refined environment.

The second row offers bench-seating for three passengers or two captain's seats featuring a collapsible tray with cup holders for added convenience. Getting into the third-row is made easier with the addition of a one-step second-row sliding seat function that provides nearly three more inches of space for easier entry and exit to the third-row. An overall interior width increase of 4.3 inches in the third-row and a standard recline function creates added comfort for up to three passengers. Like the second-row bench, the third-row will be 40/60 split for added passenger and storage flexibility and convenience. Rear cargo space behind the third-row has also increased by up to 34 percent for added storage.

Additional available convenience features include an Automatic High Beam System, Auto Cruise Control, Smart Key, driver's seat memory, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain's seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Improved Dynamic Performance, Handling, Efficiency

The new Highlander will be available in three powertrains. A 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is equipped with a variable intake manifold and dual Variable-Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which controls phasing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize torque and fuel efficiency. The 2.7-liter engine is teamed with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

A 3.5-liter V6 is also equipped with dual VVT-i and a variable intake manifold. Acceleration and fuel efficiency are improved thanks to a new six-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT) that offers selectable manual sequential shifting.

The Highlander Hybrid model's Hybrid Synergy Drive system pairs the 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with a high-torque electric drive motor-generator for additional power and fuel efficiency.

The new Highlander will provide a more dynamic driving experience, with new technologies that include Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive (AWD), enhancements in suspension performance, and optimized electric power steering. The spring rates and the shock absorbers have been optimally tuned to help enhance the vehicles handling characteristics.

Highlander will have a MacPherson strut front suspension, double-wishbone rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, 18-inch alloy wheels and available 19-inch alloys.

Highlander's Dynamic Torque Control AWD system automatically shifts from front-wheel drive (FWD) to AWD when accelerating or when sensors detect wheel slippage. The driver is able to view the torque-distribution settings on the meter display.

The Dynamic Torque Control AWD system continuously monitors and controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in the rear differential.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to help improve fuel consumption.

The Dynamic Torque Control AWD system uses information sent from various sensors (speed, steering angle and speed, throttle angle and yaw rate) to automatically govern the transmission of torque to the rear wheels, as required.

I was looking/reading about this earlier today.

I really like it...its a much more masculine version of the current gen. And while I very much like my SE...the interior is WAY better. Easier access to the 3rd row is HUGE.

When my lease is up in less than 2 years...dont know if we'll look at one of these or not.
