The Unexpected: Toyota Reveals the Stunning Next-Generation Corolla Sedan

The 11th Generation Corolla is distinguished by a more expressive, chiseled exterior design
Upgraded interior styling, premium materials, and roominess reposition Corolla in the compact segment
Improved efficiency with an available "7-speed" CVTi-S and available Corolla LE Eco trim level that targets over 40 mpg estimated highway fuel economy rating

TORRANCE, Calif. (June 6, 2013) – The all-new 2014 Corolla will include dramatically amplified elements of style, design, quality and craftsmanship, while building upon the stellar Corolla reputation for reliability, efficiency and function, making Toyota's newest compact the most surprising and capable Corolla yet.

Corolla for the World: 47 years, 154 Countries, Built in 16 Locations, Immeasurable Impact
With nearly 40 million units sold, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car nameplate on the planet, and this year marks its 47th year on the market. Since the Corolla first appeared in Japan in 1966, it has played a major role in the motorization of Japan, and its global popularity has had a significant impact on transportation throughout the rest of the world. The global scope of Corolla now finds it manufactured in 16 locations and sold in 154 countries. The Toyota Corolla's appeal as a global car is rooted in a product philosophy set forth by Tatsuo Hasegawa, the first Corolla's chief engineer, who sought "to develop a car that brings happiness and well-being to people around the world."

As a result of more than 40 years on the market satisfying consumer needs, this compact car has developed into a pillar supporting Toyota's famed reputation for quality, durability, and reliability. The Corolla, maybe more so than any other Toyota sold globally, has been the answer for consumers in the market for a reliable, efficient, and affordable compact vehicle.

In developing this new 11th generation of Corolla, Toyota designer and engineers relied on exhaustive consumer feedback to help shape key elements of the product on a global scale. Customers emphasized the overwhelming importance of vehicle design on product perception in the marketplace. The all-new 11th generation Corolla makes a much stronger design statement, with more compelling exterior and interior executions that challenge the pre-conceptions about Corolla. The next generation Corolla continues the Toyota brand's recent momentum set forth by design-focused product launches such as Avalon and RAV4. The 2014 Corolla will remain appealing to the current consumers while helping the world's most popular car grow in appeal with youthful car buyers.

Unexpected Exterior Design is Expressive, Chiseled
The all-new Corolla makes an immediate visual impact with a more expressive, chiseled exterior design that elaborates on the "Iconic Dynamism" theme first seen on the Corolla Furia Concept that debuted at the North American International Auto Show. The new Corolla is distinguished by its tauter, more athletic proportions that ride on a longer wheelbase (+ 3.93 inches/ +100 mm compared to current model). With the wheels pushed out toward the corners, compact overhangs, and more tapered front and rear expression, the new Corolla communicates a more dynamic compact sedan form, even at a standstill. The new sedan is 3.90 inches (99 mm) longer overall and yet presents a more compact appearance than the current model thanks to a basic shape that tapers at the front and rear of the vehicle to help emphasize the wheel arches and wheels-to-the-corner stance.

The new Corolla features an expressive front fascia with sharper, more pronounced details above a large trapezoidal grill that rests beneath a thin intake inlet below the hood.

The front view of the new Corolla reveals a continuation of the design themes seen in recent Toyota sedans such as Camry and Avalon, and it creates a sleeker, more assertive impression of a Toyota compact sedan with its more precisely sculpted surfaces.

Among the challenges presented by the new Corolla's original design concept was the need to execute more deeply rounder corners to achieve the desired sleeker image. The thick structure of conventional headlamps would hinder the appearance of deeply rounded corners. Sleek, compact LED lamp assemblies were adopted to reduce the corner mass and help accentuate the Corolla's tapered, rounded-corner, front- end design theme. In addition, the low heat generated by the LED lamp enabled the use of a lighter weight PES resin lens instead of conventional glass. Corolla is the first compact sedan to offer standard equipped LED headlamps.

2014 Corolla
Basic Exterior Dimensions Compared to Current model (change in parenthesis)
Overall length 182.6 in. (+3.90 in.) 183.1 for S-grade 4639 mm (+99), 4650mm for S-grade
Overall width 69.9 in. (+0.63 in.) 1776 mm (+16)
Overall height 57.3 in. (-0.39 in.) 1455 mm (-10)
Wheelbase 106.3 in. (+ 3.93 in.) 2700 mm (+100)
Front Overhang 37.7 in. (+0.90 in.) 958 mm (+23)
Rear Overhang 38.6 in. (-0.94 in.) 981 mm (-24)

Heightening the exterior design's attention to detail, the new Corolla's athletic profile reveals door handles that have been sculpted into the body to align with a character line that spans the length the door surfaces, utilizing a vertically asymmetrical door handle design. The new Corolla's C-pillar features a "faster", longer sloping angle that blends in to the rear deck more athletically. The rear view is highlighted by large, sharply-sculpted rear taillight assemblies. The new Corolla is available with a subtle rear deck-lid spoiler that accentuates the sportier nature of this new compact.

Elevated Interior Experience With a Greater Sense of Craftsmanship in its Design
The new Corolla's interior continues the "Iconic Dynamism" theme to create a stylish, highly functional, and inviting interior space with a greater sense of craftsmanship in its design, use of materials, and attention to detail. A horizontally oriented dash structure helps enhance the interior's sense of spaciousness while providing a more wide-open, intuitively functional space for interface with vehicle controls. The interior offers a premium aesthetic with its use of piano-black gloss trim highlighted by metallic ornamentation and trim that conveys an upscale yet sportier image.

Depending on interior color theme, blue, black or amber pinstriped accents are used in conjunction with the dash and door panel ornamentation to enhance the premium appeal of the interior. Ornamental stitching along the leading edge of the dash pad adds a sense of craftsmanship to the interior's upscale nature. An available decorative boot with ornamental stitching surrounding the shift lever adds a sporty, premium look.

As a result of the 3.93 inch increase in vehicle wheelbase, the new Corolla's interior package has been dramatically improved in terms of passenger comfort, gaining considerable legroom for the rear seat occupants. Compared to the outgoing model, the rear seat hip point has been moved back 2.95 inches (75 mm), and additional leg-room was gained by adopting a slim front seat back. The rear passenger floor was also made flatter by re-routing exhaust pipes beneath the vehicle to offer better middle position foot room. Rear seat comfort is also enhanced with the use of denser urethane pads and foam inserts within the seats.

The 2014 Corolla elevates the compact car's interior experience by treating occupants to a high level of cabin quietness. Environmental noise, in addition to road and engine sounds entering the cabin, are mitigated by an acoustic glass windscreen, improved floor carpet insulation, an instrument panel seal between the cowl and the windshield, a fender sound insulator, and an inner dash silencer pad.

Corolla's front seats include a longer, more supportive lower cushion and an improved bolster design, while offering a 0.59-inch (15-mm) increase in the seat's range of adjustment to help accommodate a wider range of physiques. The effort required operating the Corolla's front seat slide, reclining, and lift mechanisms has also been greatly reduced.

Corolla's standard gauge cluster offers three dials with sharp image detail and clear blue illumination, surrounded by chrome trimmed rings. Within the speedometer dial is a multi-information display that shows odometer, trip odometer, current fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, cruising distance and average vehicle speed. The S-grade meter cluster offers a high technology feel with a 3.5-inch black and white TFT display that rests between two large dials.

The new Corolla offers an expanded range of interior choices with seat fabrics that create an appealing contrast with the piano black and metallic-accent surfaces. Depending on the Corolla trim level, the seating surfaces are trimmed in premium, detailed fabric or a durable, upscale SofTex™ material.

Four Distinct Grades; High-level of Standard Equipment
The 2014 Corolla is available in four distinct grades: L, LE, S, and the new LE Eco grade. While each grade offers its own equipment level, all Corollas feature LED lowbeam headlamps with LED daytime running lights, an in-glass AM/FM antenna, color-keyed outside door handles, color-keyed outside mirrors, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, power door locks with automatic locking feature, power windows with driver-side one-touch up/down, air conditioning with pollen filter, standard Bluetooth connectivity and eight airbags.

Other popular features available for Corolla's trim levels include Smart Key System on front doors and trunk with Push Button Start, auto air-conditioning with pollen filter, leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters and audio controls, Multi-Information Display, Bluetooth hands-free phone voice-command controls, SofTex™-trimmed heated front seats, and a range of audio capability that will offer navigation and Entune™ apps accessible through the head unit. Much more will be shared regarding Corolla's grade level content, capability, and price structure closer to on-sale timing in the fall.

Drivetrain and Aerodynamics Maximize Efficiency
The Corolla has always prioritized delivering outstanding fuel economy and the new 2014 model maintains that focus. The new Corolla LE Eco model targets an estimated EPA highway fuel economy rating of over 40 mpg. The Corolla LE Eco is a new grade that enhances the fuel economy with the help of aerodynamic underbody covers, color-keyed rear spoiler, a more efficient 1.8-liter engine with Valvematic technology, low rolling resistance tires on 15-inch wheels or available 16-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, and an efficient CVT.

Efforts to reduce wind resistance have helped the new Corolla achieve a drag coefficient of 0.28, which places it near the top of the compact-sedan class. Careful attention has been taken to refine airflow and reduce turbulence over the front and rear edges of the car. The Corolla's underbody features a smoother, flatter smoother design to help reduce turbulent airflow. Both the LE Eco grade and S grade offer strategically placed vehicle under covers located below the bumper fascia, engine, front floor, rear floor, and fuel tank to help manage airflow under the vehicle for improved efficiency.

The 2014 Corolla offers two efficient 1.8-liter, all-aluminum four-cylinder engines. The base 1.8-liter unit with VVT-i is available on the L, LE, and S grades and is rated at 132 horsepower. The Corolla's new LE Eco trim level is equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with Valvematic , a valve train technology which appears for the first time in North America with Corolla. Valvematic offers a broader range of continuously variable valve timing (lift and phasing) to provide optimal intake valve (not on exhaust side) operation relative to engine demands. Valvematic offers more than a five-percent improvement in fuel economy and engine output (140 horsepower).

The 2014 Corolla also offers improved fuel economy thanks to its advanced Continuously Variable Transmission. This CVTi-S (i for intelligent, S for shift), which will be available on the LE, S, and LE Eco Corolla models, features several enhancements to improve its efficiency and driving performance with discrete shift points that help create a sensation more similar to a traditional hydraulic automatic transmission.

While the efficiency and reduced weight inherent in a pulley-type CVT would seem an ideal solution for vehicles emphasizing fuel efficiency, the characteristic CVT "rubber band" driving sensation of the engine winding to its power band upon acceleration has earned detractors. With Corolla's new CVTi-S, Toyota's engineers improved the drivability of the new Corolla by adapting discrete stepped "gears" or shift points, into the car's acceleration and deceleration curves. The Corolla's new CVTi-S even mimics the familiar characteristics of hydraulic automatics creating a sense of positive shift engagement. On the Corolla S trim, up to seven shift-points can also be manually actuated from the shift gate or steering wheel paddle shifters.

As the first pulley-style CVT product offered by Toyota in North America, the engineering effort prioritized making the new CVTi-S' operation and power application more appealing and familiar to North American drivers. Corolla's engineers maximized the fuel saving design inherent in a pulley CVT while enhancing its operation to provide a more "direct feel" to pedal inputs through careful analysis of traditional automatic transmission operation. The new CVTi-S will provide a more linear connection between pedal effort and acceleration feel compared to previous CVT designs.

Toyota engineers addressed challenges presented by typical CVT design such as the high level of hydraulic pressure CVT's require for operation, and the optimization of the pulley ratio range to offer the best performance and fuel economy. Typically, CVT hydraulic-fluid pumps are driven at the same rate as engine speed; as a result, the pump wastes considerable effort, hurting transmission efficiency at higher engine speeds as the pump moves more fluid than necessary to lubricate and sandwich the CVT's belt. With this new CVTi-S, hydraulic pressure was reduced to an optimal point to protect against belt slippage, while conserving drive effort to limit excess pumping losses. The Corolla's new CVTi-S is fitted with an oil pump that features a coaxial 2-port design that enables a 25-percent reduction in pump drive torque compared to other pump designs, and results in a greater efficiency with its reduction in parasitic engine loss.

For a belt-driven CVT, the range of speed ratios is determined by the diameters of the input and output pulleys. The greater the disparity in size between these two pulleys, the greater the range of gear ratios, efficiency and performance the transmission can offer. The clearances within the Corolla's CVTi-S exterior casing and between internal components have been enhanced to better accommodate the most optimally sized pulleys within the compact transmission case. The CVTi-S offers a forward gear ratio range of 0.396 to 2.480, which works well for acceleration, cruising speeds, and fuel-conscious driving with a 4.761 final drive ratio. The new CVTi-S includes a transmission fluid warmer is used to help get fluid to optimal temperature faster.

The Corolla's new CVTi-S is uses a lower viscosity CVT fluid that protects all of the transmission's internal parts while helping reduce parasitic loss to enhance efficiency and performance. The CVTi-S also offers extremely quiet operation from a compact, lightweight case design that adds reinforcing ribs and an optimal shape to help suppress vibration and noise.

ECO and SPORT Drive Modes Add Efficiency and Excitement
Corolla models equipped with CVTi-S offer the capability of either an ECO or SPORT driving mode. On the Corolla LE Eco, the ECO driving mode makes accelerator control become non-linear to suppress the vehicle's response to choppy driving and contain acceleration from standing start to help reduce fuel consumption. The accelerator pedal's communication is the same as Normal-mode after 50-percent throttle. In ECO mode, the air conditioning operation is controlled in the interest of efficiency with compressor power reduced, the utilization of recirculation mode, and extra time allowed to attain a desired interior cabin temperature.

As equipped on the Corolla S, the new CVTi-S offers a SPORT mode that helps deliver a more dynamic driving experience with software tuning that alters shift points, creating transmission behavior during acceleration that enhances the sporty character of the S-grade. SPORT mode is not a track focused mode, but rather a transmission setting that, along with unique electric power steering programming, helps create a sportier driving sensation during normal road and freeway driving. On the Corolla S equipped with CVTi-S, steering wheel mounted paddle shifters allow drivers to make fast, sequential, stepped shifts through "7-speeds" to help enhance the driving experience. The Corolla S console shifter also offers a manual gate (M-position) that also allows drivers to make brisk upshifts or downshifts using the shift lever. The next shift step will automatically be engaged if the engine revolutions become high enough or down shifted if they become low enough. The M modeactivity is displayed in the black and white display of the Corolla S combination meter. The Corolla's Sport mode was developed and evaluated on roads within the key global markets to help ensure a more energetic drive across a broad range of conditions.

The base model Corolla L is offered with a four-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. The six-speed manual is also available in the Corolla S.

Rigid Unibody and Tuned Suspension Offer Engaging Handling
The new Corolla offers improved handling and steering thanks to a rigid unibody that can take advantage of improved suspension tuning to offer a more engaging, better handling, more dynamic car. The Corolla's unibody makes extensive use of high-strength steel to improve the rigidity of the structure, but also keeps vehicle curb weight under 2,900 pounds for all grades, which helps fuel efficiency. The use of high tensile-strength steel allows for reduced thickness and optimized shape of structural panels while increasing strength to help improve collision performance. Corolla is expected to perform very well in collision safety ratings test. The new Corolla features additional unibody bracing (tunnel brace and rear floor brace) to help increase platform rigidity over the current model.

The new Corolla's suspension uses a Macpherson strut design for the front with a new, more rigid control-arm design. A rear torsion beam arrangement is used for the rear. Both suspension layouts have been designed to take advantage of the additional body rigidity to provide improved handling responses and steering control. While the spring rates on Corolla have been optimized for ride comfort, the S-model equipped with 17-inch wheels includes unique coil, damper, and bushing tuning to help offer a sportier driving characteristic. The rear torsion beam's attachments points are now fastened to the body at a slanted, diagonal angle for its bushings as opposed to the straight attachment orientation of the previous generation vehicle. This diagonal attachment point layout contributes to improved rear handling, grip, and stability.

The new Corolla is equipped with an electric power steering system that offers enhanced feel and 'weight" in the hands of drivers, while increasing its sense of directness with little effort. The use of an electric rack and pinion system eliminates an accessory driven hydraulic steering system, which would represent parasitic loss to the engine. The lightweight and compact components of the tilt, telescopic steering structure are designed to help enhance steering rigidity, while reducing vibration. A more structurally rigid steering intermediate shaft help improve the directness of the new Corolla's steering. The new Corolla's steering measures 3.19 turns from lock to lock.

The braking system includes a 10.82-inch (275-mm) ventilated front disc, and either a 10.19-inch (259-mm) solid rear disc (available on S-grade) or nine-inch (229-mm) rear drum (all other grades). Like all Toyota models, the 2014 Corolla will feature Toyota's Star Safety System™ standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system. An electronic tire pressure monitoring system is standard equipment.

Corolla offers a broad range of wheels ranging from 15-inch wheels with covers (L and LE Eco grades), 16-inch steel wheels with covers (LE and S), 16 inch aluminum wheels (LE), a 16-inch aluminum design unique to the Eco grade and 17-inch alloy wheels unique to the S grade. The wheels help emphasize the character of each Corolla model, with the most fuel-economy-focused Corolla LE Eco wearing 15-inch wheels with covers shod in low rolling resistance 195/65R-15 rubber. At the other side of the Corolla spectrum is the sportiest grade of Corolla S that wears impactful available 17-inch alloy wheels covers in more performance oriented 215/45R-17 rubber. The 16-inch wheels used for the LE (both the steel and aluminum) and the 16-inch aluminum aero-wheel for the LE Eco model all use a 205/55R-16 tire.

The 2014 Corolla will elevate the consumer's experience for the world's most popular sedan with modern, expressive styling, a more premium interior experience, improved fuel economy and performance, and a strong menu of available features. Vehicle pricing, final grade content, and option packages will be made available closer to launch timing.

I'm really surprised at the splashes Toyota is making now, especially in terms of styling. Interior seems quite nice too - of course, all of this is relative.

The huge knock is the 4AT I get they want to cut down on costs and I'm sure it still gets decent gas mileage, but...

^ agree. that 4-spd is really the weak link in an otherwise solid product. I think the exterior is the best interpretation of Toyota's new styling for their sedans - I go as far as saying this looks pretty good. I'm not too excited about the interior, but it's definitely not ugly, either. And the standard LED headlight - I'm guessing they're trying to make up for the 4spd? Regardless, it's nice to see it trickle down market.

Toyota Motor Corp. is tossing aside a reliable but aging compact recipe by adding room, refinement, and bolder styling to the redesigned Corolla.

The venerable Corolla, the best-selling nameplate in the world and a longtime gateway to the Toyota brand for many buyers, has been consistently vanilla and a reliable quantity, with close to 40 million copies sold to date globally.

But more stylish rivals have loosened Toyota's grip on the sizable U.S. compact car market, drawing younger buyers and forcing the company to change gears.

With a wheelbase and length that is nearly 4 inches longer than the outgoing model, the 2014 Corolla is now considerably larger than the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze, further blurring the lines of what is considered a compact car.

The 11th-generation Corolla was created with what Toyota describes as striking, "iconic dynamism" exterior styling to more directly challenge chic-and-cheerful compact sedans from Ford (Focus), Hyundai (Elantra) and Mazda (Mazda3).

It was introduced in Santa Monica, Calif., Thursday evening.

"The current Corolla is fine, but this car has been elevated to appeal to a broader audience," Toyota Division general manager Bill Fay said in an interview. "We built the Toyota brand with Corolla, and with Corolla's [quality, dependability and reliability] story. With this car, there's a lot to talk about, there's more to work with. This is not the Corolla you expect."

Toyota will begin wholesaling the new Corolla to U.S. dealers in September.

Fay believes the redesigned model can easily break the 300,000-unit mark in annual U.S. sales, a milestone last reached in 2008, when Corolla Matrix sales were included.

Last year marked the 1st time since 2002 that the Corolla wasn't the best-selling compact car in the United States.

It was outsold by the heavily incentivized Honda Civic, 317,909 units to 290,947. So far through May, Corolla has regained the lead over Civic, 132,514 to 128,980, although Honda says it still has the lead in retail registrations to individuals.

Still, Corolla sales have fallen worldwide from a peak of 1.42 million units in 2006 as the Civic, Elantra, Focus and other competitors have attracted consumers with better fuel economy, lower prices and more dynamic styling.

Its pricing and success on the showroom floor will help determine how profitable Toyota is in future years, as well.

In terms of styling, while it's dangerous to be too conservative, "Toyota has shown you can be conservative in a segment and still be successful," said Jim Hall, principal of 2953 Analytics in suburban Detroit. "The details don't make or break a car. It's how it works as a whole that is why the Corolla has been successful."

Last redesigned in spring 2008, the Corolla is again on a 5-year product cycle. The last time around, Toyota delayed the Corolla by more than a year -- to a 6-year span -- after being caught off guard by competitors' much-improved products.

The current Corolla -- with a 27 mpg city/34 highway rating -- trails the 39 and 40 mpg highway fuel economy ratings on rival compacts.

The 2014 base Corolla will carry over a 1.8-liter, 132 hp 4-cylinder engine. But an optional Eco 1.8-liter engine will be available with 140 hp and highway fuel economy estimated to be above 40 mpg.

The base Corolla L will be offered with a carryover 4-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. Those transmissions will represent a small percentage of Corolla sales.

For the vast majority of the lineup, the 2014 Corolla will be equipped with a continuously variable transmission, the 1st CVT offered by Toyota in North America.

Because many drivers dislike the "rubber band" feel of CVT pulleys searching for the optimal power-to-economy ratio, the Corolla CVT will have preset steps to behave more like an automatic transmission.

Toyota says the interior is quieter with the addition of an acoustic glass windscreen, improved floor carpet insulation, an instrument panel seal between the cowl and the windshield, a fender sound insulator and an inner dash silencer pad.

Inside, much of the extended wheelbase has been used to expand the rear-seat area, with nearly 3 more inches of legroom in the back.

Standard features for all Corollas will include Bluetooth, eight airbags, air conditioning, in-glass AM/FM antenna, 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, color-keyed outside door handles and mirrors, power door locks and windows with driver-side 1-touch up/down, LED low-beam headlamps and daytime running lights.

The Corolla will maintain its current front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup -- although there have been changes to suspension geometry and spring rate and bushing settings. The front and rear brakes are slightly larger, with optional solid discs in the back.

As the current Corolla has aged, fleet sales have been on the rise, according to data from Edmunds.com.

Fleet sales are estimated to make up 23 percent of Corolla's sales mix in 2013, almost double the rate from 5 years ago. It also has a higher concentration of fleet sales than all of its compact competitors except the Focus, according to Edmunds.

The Corolla buyer skews more toward female, married and urban buyers than the rest of the compact segment, according to demographic data from consultancy AutoPacific.
2014 Toyota Corolla
(Change in parentheses)

Wheelbase 106.3 in. (+3.9")
Width 69.9 in. (+0.6")
Length 182.6 in. (+3.9")
Height 57.3 in. (-0.4")

Corolla buyers also tend to be less educated and earn less money than consumers who buy other cars in the segment. The Corolla is more popular among growing minority groups, notably Hispanics.

With the new Corolla, Toyota is also going to have to make inroads with online shoppers. According to Edmunds, more Corolla shoppers consider rival vehicles than vice versa, across every compact nameplate.

For instance, while 27 percent of Corolla shoppers also looked at the Civic, only 11 percent of Civic shoppers also considered a Corolla.

1 unanswered question is whether the Corolla's sibling vehicle -- the Matrix 5-door hatchback -- will remain in the lineup.

The Matrix was added to the Toyota stable in 2002 and initially constituted 15 percent or more of the Corolla sales mix. But sources within Toyota say the Matrix represents well below 10 percent of sales today. Hints from executives indicate the Matrix will not be reloaded.

If Toyota lowered the ride height by 2 inches, it would probably improve by 2-3 MPG.

Considering the competition and the class, this will do very well IMO. Looks far better than the Civic. But the interior is a bit of a mess. What's with Toyota and their interiors lately. They're getting uglier and cheaper with every new release.

https://www.netcarshow.com/toyota/20...lla_hatchback/

For the first time in North America, Toyota's newest, stylish, and most technologically-advanced small car, the all-new 2019 Corolla Hatchback, makes its debut at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Don't let its diminutive dimensions fool you - the hatchback, in either SE or XSE grades, is all about making a huge impression. With its lengthy list of standard features that includes Entune 3.0 with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa Connectivity; a revised sport-tuned suspension and new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform; and the first North American application of Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, Corolla Hatchback strikes a resounding chord with drivers who value authenticity, utility, practicality, and style.

Indomitable Style
Toyota Corolla Hatchback has flair extraordinaire. With a theme of Shooting Robust, along with a design goal of Agile, influencing their every pen stroke, designers created a form that is simultaneously distinct, dynamic, muscular, and sophisticated. Shooting references the design's sport coupe traits implemented in all facets.

With those concepts in mind, Toyota Corolla Hatchback is a meticulously mixed cocktail of emotive lines, creases, and surfaces. It's lower (by 1.0 in.), wider (by 1.2 in.), and longer (by 1.5 in.) than its predecessor, Corolla iM. It also has wider front and rear tracks, and a longer wheelbase.

Its hood sits two inches lower than before, affording passengers excellent forward visibility. The new frontal styling with a rounded nose and trapezoidal-shaped under grille is a further evolution of Toyota's Under Priority Catamaran and Keen Look design philosophies, both of which emphasize Corolla Hatchback's increased width.

Slim, J-shaped Bi-Beam LED headlamps wrap deep into the front fenders and accent the front in both stylishness and precise illumination. Front overhang has been cut by 0.8 inches; at the rear, it's 0.8 inches longer. Chiseled character lines at its profile link both ends' protruding flanks making for an active, well-planted expression that is uncommon amongst its peers. Wheel sizes range from 16-inches to 18-inches in diameter.

Its new rear style articulates Toyota Corolla Hatchback's overarching emphasis on athletic presence. The relationship between front and rear design is closely aligned given the rear's more rounded physique that encompasses simple, condensed, yet powerful, three-dimensional landscapes. Its hatch - now made from TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) - is not only lightweight to aid fuel efficiency, it is set at a steeper angle (moved 14 degrees forward) for that ultimate sporty look. The rear all-LED taillamps feature a diffusing inner lens designed to highlight the hatchback's stout stance. And the rear bumper styling echoes the frontal Under Priority Catamaran design with its thin lower lip and chrome diffuser.

Differentiation between SE and XSE is distinct. Both grades receive LED headlamps and taillights, chrome rear diffuser, and alloy wheels. XSE ups the ante with 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, chrome front grille surround, and an available innovative Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). AFS - available only on XSE CVT - allows for the focused distribution of light in an area that matches the vehicle's speed and steering angle. The Bi-Beam LED units move vertically and horizontally to provide optimal light output by analyzing steering angle, vehicle speed, and the vehicle's longitudinal axes angle to adjust lamps.

Corolla Hatchback's color range includes the new-for-2019 color Rival Blue, as well as Blizzard Pearl, Silver Metallic, Midnight Black, Galactic Aqua Mica, Scarlet, and Oxide Bronze.

Inner Emotiveness
Simple. Warm. Inviting. Sensuous. Descriptors like these inspired designers' efforts when visualizing Corolla Hatchback's cabin. Sensuous Minimalism marinates the entire capacious space. From their supportive sport seats, front passengers are faced with a neat instrument panel that lends an open, harmonious feeling thanks to its 0.9-inch thinner upper surface and 1.7-inch wider center console dividing passengers.

At the center of the instrument panel resides a standard high-resolution 8-inch multimedia touchscreen. The center stack screen provides access to vehicle settings, audio controls, navigation, smartphone, and Entune 3.0 apps. Climate controls, located below the multimedia portal, are fashioned in a bright, highly visible digitized configuration.

In addition to being wider, the center console is also longer to accommodate a larger variety of passenger physiques and comfort preferences. It incorporates a center tray ahead of the gearshift that can hold small items such as a smartphone or wallet, or if outfitted, serves as the Qi wireless device charging area. A 5.5-inch smartphone can easily fit inside the center console box.

High-gloss materials are paired with matte elements - silver accents with Piano Black and available contrasting stitching - to best accentuate a premium look and feel. The elimination of unnecessary lettering on switchgear, plus, the unification of all materials' and elements' shape, color, grain, and gloss, maximize continuity and aesthetic cleanliness. Tactility, too, is minded with the utmost consideration. Keen eyes will appreciate the minimized gaps between buttons and switches; again, furthering Toyota Corolla Hatchback's sophisticated character.

Front passengers' hip points are lower (to 10.82 inches), and cushioning has been revised, which provides a more natural body posture and position for ideal access to the multifunction steering wheel, pedals, and gearshift. Such optimized seating allows passengers to enjoy Corolla Hatchback's thrilling dynamics all the better. Front door storage solutions include cup holders capable of accommodating 24-ounce bottles and A4-sized documents. Not to be outdone, rear seats utilize updated cushioning to improve comfort and minimize fatigue. Furthering their convenience are upper door cup holders that accommodate 16-ounce bottles.

The standard amenity list is as impressive as the cabin's aesthetic. SE grade is equipped with single-zone automatic climate control, leather shift knob, and paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. An electronic parking brake, three-door SmartKey system, automatic up/down windows, and two front USB outlets are standard as well.

XSE grade builds on SE's amenity palette by including dual-zone climate control, combination leather (leather with mélange-like fabric) seating, heated front seats, and eight-way power driver's seat. XSE's instrument panel and doors receive unique stitching, and behind the multifunction steering wheel, a 7-inch TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) shows vehicle information, turn-by-turn navigation, and various vehicle settings (including those pertaining to Lane Departure Alert, Lane Tracing Assist, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Blind Spot Monitor).

While electrifying in functionality and personality, Toyota Corolla Hatchback delivers a civilized, quiet ride. Powertrain drone and road noise have been culled thanks to revised drivetrain efficiencies, plus, the widespread implementation of sound-absorbing materials, sealants, foams, resonator ribs, and silencers. Its TNGA structure utilizes additional seals in its body panel gaps to insulate noise penetration and enhance air sealing performance. Corolla Hatchback's Aero Stabilizing Fins located on its taillights also combat wind drone.

Multifaceted Multimedia
There's no shortage of entertainment and connectivity capability inside Toyota Corolla Hatchback either. For SE, standard Entune 3.0 Audio includes 8-in. touchscreen; six speakers; Apple CarPlay; Amazon Alexa integration; Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect; Safety Connect; Wi-Fi Connect; Scout GPS Link Compatible; Siri Eyes Free; Auxiliary audio jack and USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and control; AM/FM; MP3/WMA playback capability; Voice Recognition training and tutorials; Hands-free phone capability; voice recognition and music streaming via Bluetooth; Customizable Home Screen; and Weather/Traffic info via Entune 3.0 App Suite.

Entune 3.0 Audio Plus, which is standard on XSE and optional on SE CVT, adds HD Radio and Weather/Traffic info; SiriusXM with Cache Radio; Entune 3.0 Connected Services; Service Connect; Remote Connect. Topping the range is Entune 3.0 Audio Premium that's optional on XSE CVT. The system includes a JBL 8-speaker 800-watt system with Clari-Fi; Dynamic Voice Recognition; Dynamic Navigation; Dynamic POI Search; and Destination Assist Connect.

The JBL audio experience with Clari-Fi - having such a complete orchestration of advanced power output, hardware, structure, and software - is engineered to impress even the most perceptive audiophile.

Other JBL audio system highlights include:
  • Free Standing Horn Tweeters
    • Located in the A-pillar at ear level for optimal high-frequency performance
  • Next-Generation HID8 Amplifier
    • 800-watts of total power, with better performance and efficiency
  • 6.7-inch Door Subwoofers
    • More powerful deep-bass response
  • Premium JBL Branding
    • Located on A-pillar, door trim, and head unit
  • Sealed Inner Door Panels
    • Promote cleaner, more power bass
  • Wide Dispersion Midrange Speakers
    • Provide full range sound for rear passengers
  • Clari-Fi Technology
    • Analyzes, rebuilds, and restores audio signals that were lost In the digital compression process
Rounding off Toyota Corolla Hatchback's connectivity are two USB terminals (located inside the center console and instrument panel) and one AUX port (located on the instrument panel).

A Driver's Hatchback
Toyota Corolla Hatchback's seamless unification of comfort and sporty controllability begins at its TNGA C platform. The compact structure employs a mixture of adhesives, spot welding, and additional bracing - top to bottom, side to side - for the benefits of driver controllability and low fuel consumption. On-road feel and fuel efficiency is further refined through the extensive use of aluminum and high- and ultra-high tensile steel in the lighter-weight chassis and body. In fact, torsional rigidity is improved a massive 60 percent compared to its predecessor.

Affixed to this musculature are revised front and rear suspensions. Its front MacPherson strut setup's geometry is changed (i.e. updated bound stopper clearance; stabilizer location) and incorporates other key augmentations like revised coil spring rate and damping force, and reduced friction in sliding parts. This all makes for a high-quality steering feel, ride comfort, and handling stability.

At the Corolla Hatchback's rear multi-link suspension with stabilizer bar, responsiveness is sharpened through updated shock absorbers and springs, and like the front, geometry is slightly modified. Lower arm locations have moved (for improved toe-in angle during higher-speed maneuvering), as has shock absorber placement (moved forward for better cargo capacity and reduced longitudinal low frequency input). Overall, front and rear suspension friction has been reduced by 40 percent, and its center of gravity is cut by a substantial 0.8 inches.

The end result: A Toyota Corolla Hatchback that possesses an uncanny blend of balance, composure, and feel that'll have its driver pining for windy roads - time and time again.

The Heart of Fun-to-Drive
TNGA isn't just the genesis of Corolla Hatchback's astute footwork and balance: An all-new TNGA-based powertrain is the heart of Toyota Corolla Hatchback's Fun-To-Drive identity. Its 2.0-liter Dynamic-Force direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine (M20A-FKS) adopts the latest in Toyota technology and structural efficacies for gains in power, fuel efficiency, and cleaner emissions.

Physically, the engine is smaller and lighter than its 1.8-liter four-cylinder predecessor, which helps to lower Corolla Hatchback's center of gravity and benefits its overall balance. The 2.0-liter is also quieter for improved Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) with additions like a more rigid crank case with integrated stiffener; a lighter resin cylinder head; and a ribbed oil pan.

The M20A-FKS is equipped with Toyota's latest D-4S fuel-injection that uses high-pressure direct-injection and low-pressure PFI (Port Fuel Injection). The setup adapts its injection method based on driving conditions so that ideal combustion is executed. The engine also features Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligence), with VVT-iE (Variable Valve Timing-intelligence by Electric motor) on the intake side and VVT-i on the exhaust. VVT-iE uses one electric motor instead of oil pressure to control the variable valve timing. Together, the valve timing systems enhance power output and fuel mileage, and cut harmful emissions.

Other notable improvements to the Dynamic-Force engine include:
  • Longer stroke
  • Compression up to 13:1
  • Enlarged valve nip angle
  • Enhanced intake port efficiency with laser clad valve seat
    • Higher rate of combustion, high tumble flow, and high intake air flow volume
  • Pistons with round top surface and slanted side wall
    • Consistent tumble flow and rapid combustion maintained
    • Less knocking and higher compression ratio
    • Friction reduction between piston skirt and cylinder
  • Lubrication enhanced with three oil jets dedicated to each cylinder
    • Better MPG, dynamic performance, less knocking, and less oil consumption
  • Lighter weight timing chain
    • Low cabin noise and reduced friction
  • Drain path within crank case to return oil from cylinder head to oil pan
    • Less oil agitation caused by the crankshaft, which means less rotation resistance
  • Connecting Rod made of high strength steel with optimized shape
    • Reduction in weight
  • Camshaft with concave profile
    • Increased valve lift amount
  • Optimized water jacket in head and block
    • Enhanced cooling and reliability
Be they a commuter or canyon cruiser, drivers will appreciate Corolla Hatchback's available transmissions: an all-new Dynamic-Shift CVT (K120), or a six-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) gearbox (EG60). The Dynamic-Shift CVT has simulated 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps, Sport Mode, and paddle shifters. It features a number of innovative elements, including the world's first launch gear in a passenger vehicle CVT.

Having a launch gear facilitates improved transmission efficiency in lower gear ratios where belt efficiency is typically poor. The transmission system utilizes gear drive when starting from a full stop, resulting in powerful acceleration, while at the same time, resolving the momentary sluggish feeling that was previously present during accelerator operation. Both smooth and comfortable launch performance are realized. When switching from gear drive to belt drive, the transmission system uses highly responsive gear change control technologies cultivated from automatic transmission technology.

With its launch gear in place, the belt has been tuned for higher gear ratios. This new setup not only improves the efficiency of belt operation, but it also enables the adoption of wider gear ranges, thereby realizing a class-leading gear ratio range of 7.5 for the 2.0-liter class.

Another benefit of the launch gear is a reduced input load. This enables the size of both belt and pulley components to be reduced. Furthermore, the belt angle has been narrowed and pulley diameters reduced, resulting in shifting speeds that are 20 percent faster. Powerful and predictable acceleration is realized, as is an endearing driving experience.

But the more involved driver will be engaged by the all-new six-speed iMT with downshift rev-matching control. Compared to the existing manual transmission, the new gearbox is lighter (by 15 pounds; total weight of 88 pounds) and shorter (by 0.94 inches), making it one of the world's smallest transmissions. Its small size contributes to improved fuel efficiency.

The gearbox also offers world-leading transmission efficiency, while the use of iMT controls, which automatically adjust engine revolutions when changing gears, ensures smooth gear shifting?free of uncomfortable recoils?for the driver.

Enhanced Toyota Safety Tech
Toyota continues to lead the pack when it comes to safety, and the all-new Toyota Corolla Hatchback provides drivers and passengers with standard safety technologies that take one step closer to achieving the ultimate goal of zero casualties from traffic accidents.

Corolla Hatchback comes standard with TSS 2.0, the second generation of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). The updated safety package adds new active-safety technologies and capabilities that enhance protection.

Breakdowns of each technology are as follows:
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD):
    • Capability to detect a preceding vehicle or pedestrian in daytime or nighttime (nighttime is new), or daytime bicyclist (new), and alert the driver (audible and visual warnings) and/or apply brakes to help mitigate or avoid the collision in certain cases (using Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Brake Assist (BA), and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)).
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (Full-Speed DRCC):
    • For highways/freeways only. Full-Speed Range DRCC is standard on all Corolla Hatchback models, except those equipped with a manual transmission. Those having a manual transmission are equipped with DRCC. Full-Speed Range DRCC is an adaptive cruise control that is designed to function at speeds between 0 to 110 mph and enables low-speed speed matching, stopping, and acceleration/deceleration relative to a preceding vehicle traveling at a slower speed. Speed, cut-in, and distance control enhanced, as well as Turn Signal Linked control added, for a more natural response.
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA):
    • Newly added to LDA w/SA is the capability, under some circumstances, to detect the road's edge, in addition to the pre-existing capability to detect visible lane markers and the vehicle's position in the lane. If unintentional lane deviation is detected, the system alerts the driver with audible and visual warnings. Steering Assist provides small corrective steering inputs momentarily to help the driver prevent the vehicle from unintentionally leaving its lane.
  • Automatic High Beam (AHB):
    • Capability to automatically activate and deactivate high beams based on driving environment and preceding vehicle's lights.
  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA):
  • For highways/freeways only and can be enabled when using DRCC - Capability to recognize white or yellow lane markings or the path of a preceding vehicle if lane markers are temporarily not available; to identify and actively track the center of the lane by providing steering assistance to the driver (hands-on, driver-assist system). Reduces driver burden and supports safe driving, especially in traffic congestion or long highway trips. The LTA system can be turned on/off.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback has seven standard airbags and Toyota's Star Safety System, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) is standard on XSE and available on SE. Corolla Hatchback also comes equipped with a standard backup camera.

Can't believe i am saying this but pretty cool car for what it is.

Perfect for HS or College students. Like Camry, it looks aggressive and sporty enough with not much to back up the looks.

There’s a new Toyota Corolla hatchback and that means there’s a new Corolla wagon to go along with it. But while we’re getting the surprisingly good hatch here, we’ve got no luck with the wagon. And that’s a bummer because this car looks spacious as hell.

This is officially the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports and what’s nice about this car is it’s on Toyota’s new modular body structure architecture platform thing. That means that the bones of the car (particularly at the front) is shared across a number of vehicles and the rest basically stretches out past it. As such, this car has a 2,700 mm wheelbase, or a bit over 106 inches from wheel to wheel. That’s a ton. That’s two inches short of a Subaru Legacy. That’s almost three inches more than a Golf wagon. The Toyota’s trunk space is supposedly 21 cubic feet, which is oddly just the same as what you get in the VW (21.4).

The rest of the car is pretty straightforward. There are no diesel engines, but there are the same gas and hybrid options you get in other Corollas, which Toyota refers to as “self-charging EV technology,” which is dumb.

But that’s not important.

This is a voluminous vehicle, this Corolla wagon, and it’s kind of a bummer that Toyota makes no mention of bringing it to America.

I mean, we could all just buy mid-2000s Saab 9-5 wagons and get just as much room, but there’s only so many Saabs to go around.

https://www.motor1.com/news/268556/t...version-rumor/

Right now, the plan is to use a 2.0-liter hybrid engine.

Toyota's GRMN performance division is only a few years old, but the team there is busy developing upcoming vehicles like a hotter version of the Supra and GR Super Sport. Now, a rumor suggests the group might develop a hot hatch out of the Corolla Hatchback. It would give the brand a step forward from the limited-edition Yaris GRMN.

"So as we go along with our product range we will look at every one of the products and say ok what is possible? Does this model suit the GR brand? Can we make some excitement with it," President and CEO of Toyota Europe Johan van Zyl told Auto Express. "I think that’s what we are trying to say with the fact we have launched the 2.0-liter hybrid in the Corolla range. We are saying it is possible. We can make a more exciting, sporty hybrid. The technology is there. It’s just the way you tune it."

Rumors have already been circulating about Toyota mulling a Corolla-based hot hatch. The most recent reports reiterated van Zyl's statement about using a hybrid powertrain for the performance model. "We don’t have any detailed plan yet. Of course in the future, the idea of a hot hybrid sounds very good," Corolla Hatchback chief engineer Yasushi Ueda said at the time.

Speculation out of Japan also suggested a Corolla hot hatch would use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with around 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts).

Even if the Corolla hot hatch doesn't materialize, other performance-oriented Toyotas might be on the way. Masayuki Kai, the assistant chief engineer on the new Supra, said that his team would love to bring the Celica and MR2 back to the brand's lineup. However, he gave the caveat that the company needed another automaker to partner on such a project to make it financially viable.

There's also still the second-generation Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ to anticipate ahead of their alleged arrival in 2021. They should have quite a power boost over the existing versions by using a version of the 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder from the new Ascent. If the mill is enough to motivate the three-row SUV, just imagine what it can do in a sports coupe.

The revamped 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan will hit the streets on a new platform and with a more powerful engine option and edgier design that gives it a more athletic look.

The 12th-generation Corolla was created on the Toyota New Global Architecture that the automaker says meshes new approaches to design, engineering, assembly and materials to reduce weight and improve fuel economy, safety and driving dynamics.

Following the Prius and then the Camry, the Corolla is the latest nameplate Toyota has injected with mojo to give what has been a traditionally reliable and durable car lineup more pizazz. Nevertheless, Toyota's overall U.S. car sales have fallen 11.1 percent this year through October to 755,724 units.
Troubling headwinds

The Corolla, consistently among the top-selling light vehicles in the U.S., faces persistent headwinds in a market shifting to light trucks: U.S. car deliveries are on track to fall for the fifth straight year in 2018.

This year through October, U.S. sales of the Corolla are down 11 percent to 257,188.

The latest Corolla sedan, Toyota says, draws from the same DNA as the new Corolla hatchback revealed this year. The two body styles also will share powertrains.

TNGA gives the Corolla more agility in addition to what Toyota says is the sedan's quietest and smoothest ride to date. Toyota says the new interior has an "elevated feeling of quality in every surface, switch and control the driver sees and touches."
Standard suite

The sedan comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite that includes a precollision system, dynamic radar cruise control on highways that will maintain preset distances between vehicles, and lane-departure alert.

The L, LE and XLE trims feature the 1.8-liter engine found in the previous generation, "yet with more horsepower and better fuel efficiency," Toyota says. The XSE and SE grades are powered by a new 2.0-liter dynamic-force direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine that delivers more performance while using less fuel.

The design crew sought a robust stance that "inspired confidence," Toyota says, but the automaker didn't rework styling to the detriment of practicality. Designers tried to maintain ample space in the vehicle for real-world use.

Designers went for a simple yet inviting interior that was warm and sensuous. The outcome is what Toyota calls "sensuous minimalism."

Toyota says the instrument panel lends an "open, harmonious feeling" with a slimmer upper surface featuring character lines that "interlock with the door trim to convey an airy atmosphere." Passengers will control the cabin through an 8-inch touch screen that gives access to audio controls, navigation and vehicle settings.

Toyota says that compared with the previous version, the instrument panel, cowl, hood and beltline height are lower to increase visibility and create the interior's open feel.

The last vestiges of the Scion brand are leaving us: Toyota has replaced the 2018 Corolla iM with the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, and the Yaris iA cannot be far behind. Much more than a name change, the Japanese brand built the Corolla hatch on a new platform, upped engine displacement by 0.2-liters and updated the look. Toyota thinks it’s pretty hot; while that’s a stretch, it is much warmer than before and a starting price of just $20,910 makes it worth a further look.

Bringing some heat is a new 2.0-liter inline-four with direct injection and variable valve timing. Compared to last year, horsepower jumps by 31 to 168 and torque can pull with 25 more lb-ft, now 151. Those numbers are much more respectable, but still behind Honda and Volkswagen hot hatches on the market. As before, you can choose between a six-speed manual and continuously variable transmission or CVT.

Here’s where things get clever. The CVT now has a physical gear in addition to the belt and pulleys. Effectively first gear, the hatchback uses it for brisk and direct off-the-line acceleration and then transitions to the pulleys to continue the work. Toyota says this approach gives the hatch a broad ratio range while keeping the CVT portion of the transmission in its most efficient range, and it works seamlessly. Our question is, if you’re going to throw in one gear, why not seven or eight more and make it a standard automatic? Perhaps because engineers included paddle shifters that can select one of 10 “gears” or set points of the pulley. No matter, choose the manual anyway. It now has rev-matching.

More ways to tell this hatch’s newness? Tthe headlights and fog lights are LEDs, as are the taillights. Inside, the steering wheel is now wrapped in leather and feels nice in your hand. Toyota added more bolstering to the seats and redesigned them to improve posture and comfort. And like, seemingly, every new car on the planet, the CVT-equipped hatches include a drive mode selector. The driver chooses between Eco, Normal, and Sport, and transmission behavior changes accordingly.

Let’s get the controversial part over with. Personally, I think the Corolla Hatchback looks fine. Not amazing, not atrocious, but fine. And I appreciate that Toyota has escaped from its stylishly conservative shell and its new products now evoke emotions. The only downside is that most seem negative (and I’m willing to bet that includes the comments below). Inside, too, is a perfectly pleasant place to be and even when the driving got spirited around Southern California roads, the seats held me in place with no trouble.

Those roads curved, elevated and dropped enough to row through the gears a few times and have the tires talk back about lateral limits, which were okay. The XSE trim and its 225/40R18 Yokohama Avid GT all-season tires hold the road well; SE trimmed cars have 16-inch wheels and tires. Braking, acceleration, and handling, all of it is competent, but none of it truly rewarding or as engaging as the perennial hot hatch benchmark, the GTI. The new 2.0-liter is a willing enough partner but emits a more coarse sound than you’d expect from a Toyota. Willing, but not encouraging.

Which leads right back to price. The most expensive Corolla Hatchback trim you can buy costs $25,010, not including a few available options. The cheapest GTI is $27,265. And you can’t argue with Toyota’s rock-solid durability and reliability. Looking at performance and price, the closest alternative is the Hyundai Elantra GT. Against it, Toyota wins on fuel economy. And, in my opinion, Hyundai wins on looks and drivability. But more importantly, Toyota now has a hatch that’s at least warm enough to compete.
BASE PRICE: $20,910
AS TESTED PRICE: $25,010
POWERTRAIN: 2.0-liter Inline-4, 6-speed manual/CVT, FWD
OUTPUT: 168 hp @ 6,600 rpm, 151 lb-ft @ 4,800 rpm
CURB WEIGHT: 3,060 lbs
FUEL ECONOMY: 32/42/36 mpg(EPA City/Hwy/Combined)
PROS: Less boring looks, reasonable power, competitive price
CONS: Coarse powertrain, less engaging drive experience than GTI or Civic hatch

Mazda 3 front + Corolla HB rear = what the new Mazda 3 HB should look like.... The rear reminds me so much of the previous gen MS3.

Definitely has a Mz3-esque rear. Not a bad looking hatch. I think a comparison to the standard Golf is more apt than a GTI comparison.

Toyota has begun building the new Corolla Hatchback and Corolla Touring Sports Wagon (née estate) at their factory in Derbyshire, UK.

The new, Euro-spec Corolla models, which are also the first Toyotas in Europe to be offered with two different hybrid powertrains, will be manufactured exclusively at this plant.

Customers can choose between two petrol-electric versions: a 120hp (122PS) with an 1.8-liter engine and a more powerful, 178hp (180PS) with a 2.0-liter. The range is completed with a turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol unit with 114hp (116PS), which is the only non-hybrid in the range.

The latest iteration of the Corolla is based on Toyota’s TNGA architecture, allowing for a 10 mm lower center of gravity, a rear multilink suspension as standard, and 60 percent greater rigidity compared to its predecessor. Thanks to these improvements, Toyota claims significantly better handling and stability without compromising ride quality and comfort.

“Our continued investments, combined with the dedication of our members, will ensure that we can deliver ever better cars to our customers,” said van Zyl. “The new Corolla will play a critical role in our market ambitions in Europe. It delivers the benefits of the new TNGA platform and increases the appeal of our industry leading self-charging hybrid electric technology.”

Prices in the UK kick off from £21,300, and Toyota will launch the new Corolla hatchback and Corolla Touring Sports wagon in Europe in February.

The longroof doesn't look bad.

I saw one of the new Corolla Hatch driving last night in a pretty electric blue. Didn't look bad on the road.

I don't like the two-tone look but I don't mind the sports wagon version at all.

Is Toyota trying to make the hatchback look like the A1?

It was pretty dark, but I didn't notice if the one I saw was a 2-tone. Does looks a lot like an A1 profile though.

I really like the way the Corolla looks now. Plus, it sounds like they made it fun to drive again.
