Maybe this car comes with a flux capacitor like the Delorean in Back to the Future?

With TQ #s like that ... there's got to be a reason.

Looks like Toyota may not have learned Honda's lesson from the last gen Si. Oh well!! At least it has FI, which can be tinkered with to easily produce more power.

It's better than the current gen. However, the taillights are really awful, and it looks pretty anonymous besides the wheels (which I actually like).

Look at the taillights that you can see. This looks like an early concept drawing of the current (07) Camry.

One doesn't even need a pic to realize that the new Corolla will be some variation of the Avalon/Camry/Yaris theme. The original pic front I would believe - the rear less so - in the Toyota lineup the Yaris will probably be the only one in hatch form (aside from Matrix). A Corolla hatch for outside of the US is a definite.

Toyota's new family of 4-cylinder engines set to launch with redesigned Corolla - - SOurce: Autoweek

TOKYO -- The redesigned Toyota Corolla, due to be launched in Japan this fall, is expected to be powered by the first in a family of new four-cylinder gasoline engines.

Toyota says its new 1.8-liter engine will be cleaner, more efficient and more powerful than its predecessor.

For example, Toyota says the engine will offer at least a 5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to conventional engines.

Toyota builds 1 million of the current engines a year in plants around the globe. The new 1.8-liter engine will be the first in a family of engines that will range from 1.6 to 3.0 liters.

To raise fuel efficiency and cut emissions, the new engine uses Toyota's variable valve timing for both intake and output strokes -- known as Dual VVT-i -- and ultralight pistons. It also reduces friction by using roller bearings in the rocker arms.

To make the engine smaller and lighter, Toyota used a modular front section of the engine, which incorporates the water pump and chain cover. Aisin Seiki supplies the module.

Toyota also used smaller-diameter spark plugs to reduce engine size.

The engine will be built at Toyota's Shimoyama engine plant in Miyoshi, near Toyota City. Currently the plant manufactures 1.8-, 2.4- and 3.5-liter gasoline engines; a 3.0-liter diesel engine; and emission-control devices.

Hate to say it, but it may be better than the Civic's, or at the very least, match it. Just a hunch, given Toyota's recent foray into the hp wars.

MotorTrend mag has a few spy shots of an exposed Toyota Corolla which they claim is the Japanese version of the next generation offering. They also say that Toyota mgt was stunned when the new Civic came out and were so worried about their next Corolla being competitive, they had to order a redesign. Hence the delay. The car looks a lot more conservative than the Civic. Sales should startin 2007 in the USA the mag claims and hybrid versions are expected.

Hondas NEW 1.8 pretty much matches the OLD celica gt 1.8.

Think the points to win are that in the Civic EX range with a 2nd toyota engine that makes lets say 170-180hp and then a performance xrs that makes 200-210. I don't know why companies are going with one low power engine in this segment, especially nissan with their sentra. Even Honda with 140hp and then the SI, they needed some ex power to go against the Mazda 3s.

The Celica was in a different class than the Civic. The B18B1 in the Integra RS & LS had 142 hp way back in 1994. And Honda/Acura didn't need help from Yamaha to develop their motors either.

Anyways, the R18 in the Civic more than matches the Celica GT motor. The R18 has more power (per new SAE ratings), much better fuel economy, and much less emissions too.

I understand your point about the performance difference between the EX and Si. But Honda seems to be doing fine with the new Civic, despite lacking the engine options of other makes like Mazda3 and Sentra.

if it's gonna be like the current corolla, it will have the same body as the japanese model but with different front and rear ends.
