Toyota: Celica News
The rumor mill is up and running again this week, churning out reports of a new Toyota Celica. While the Toyota line-up once included a variety of sports-coupes, since the cancellation of the Supra, MR2 and Celica, it's had nothing but sedans, hatchbacks, vans and trucks to offer. Rumor has it that a new Celica is on the way, to be built by Subaru, in whose parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Toyota acquired significant stake back in 2005.
If reports out of Japan's BestCar are to be believed, the new Celica will come in two versions: the base GT, with a naturally-aspirated 2-liter Subaru boxer four driving the rear wheels, and a hopped-up GT-Four version with the 300-hp turbo engine from the JDM Impreza STi and all-wheel-drive. The GT-Four could also be a sort of performance hybrid, gaining small electric motors in each of the four wheels. Both the GT and GT-Four are tipped to be available in either two-door or three-door bodystyles, since the Impreza is offered only as a sedan and five-door for this current generation. The new Celica, the styling of which could draw on the FT-HS concept car from last year's Detroit show (pictured above), is reportedly being readied for a launch in Japan next year.

Toyota will go FWD to save a few Yen, and not interfere with any other sports car they produce (read as the IS). But a AWD small coupe in a decent price range will be great.

Now the rumors are about the celica... I thought Subaru was supposed to build a AE86 replacement... and what happened to the new supra.
I'm so tired of rumors...
File it under "I'll believe it when I see it"...

Toyota: Celica news...
Hmmm...speculation from Autoweek.nl...
The gossip started the day Toyota gave life to the "interesting cars committee", shortly after they took a majority share in Fuji Heavy Industries (aka Subaru), with the claimed return of the legendary AE86, a Corolla Coupe from the 1980's. It may not necessarily be the AE86 though, how about the return of the Toyota Celica, which was pulled from the market back in 2005.
Are we talking about two projects or is the AE86 Project the eigth generation Celica? Maybe we can simply call it the FT-HS? The initial leaked details from last August could describe all of them, under 4 meters in length, 1,7 meters wide and 1,35 meters high and a target weight of 1000 kg. Only the engine seems to make the difference, a 1.5 liter 2NZ-FE engine versus the 2.0 liter boxer from the Impreza.
The next generation Toyota Celica will be available in two versions, a Celica GT and Celica GT-4. The GT should be powered by the 2.0 liter boxer and will be rear-wheel-drive while the GT-4 receives the 300 hp 2.0 liter boxer from the Impreza Sti with Subaru's four-wheel-drive (including in-wheel electric motors for added power on the wheels). Further rumours are that Toyota may return to WRC with the new Celica.
The Toyota Celica will also have two bodystylings, firstly a true coupe but also a three-door hatchback. There will not be a five-door hatch since that would directly compete with the Subaru Impreza hatch. The Celica is expected to be built by Subaru at the Gunma plant. Whether the new Celica will ever be available outside of Japan is still very unclear.

Not sure if this is the same/related to the news in the other thread (https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384159 )...But, if they are, I'll merge them later.

Wow.... that is quite impressive if it even becomes reality. Just disable the electric power steering and it'll be golden. I for one would be excited for Toyota to bring back their RWD "interesting cars" from the 80's. Still considering getting a 1991 MR2 for a project/autox car.

If only the 2000-05 Celica was RWD.... its so damn lightweight, and the GTS was a worthy Type-R fighter. Instead they went the mundane route with the tC and dropped a damned Camry engine in it.

But this does make sense for Toyota (and possibly a Lexus spinoff)...
BMW is coming out with the 1-series a cheaper RWD coupe... Hyundai is coming out with the RWD Genesis coupe... Toyota should come out with something to counter these...
I would say "Where's Acura"... but they probably don't see the market for a RWD coupe like the other automakers have...
One of the above cars will probably be my next one (either new or used)... I don't think I'll spend over $30K, so I'm really interested to see what comes out from Hyundai and Toyota.
