the one thing that's clear is that it looks FUN to drive, that's for sure.

Yeah, don't really like the back end all that much either. Thought it was the contrasting rear diffuser at first. But even trying to color match it to body color didn't help. Wish they kept it like the concept. Concept car was just perfect.

Maybe it's the color of the car too?

Think it would look a lot better in black and with a nice set of wheels.

+1

Everything flows smoothly until the rear end.

However, if it handles like they say it does, I won't really care. Would make a great commuter car for myself.

Subaru Production version
https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...2&postcount=36

also subaru released that the car will weigh just under 2700 pounds. Expect toyota to be similar.

Can you say lightweight (compared to todays cars)

thing wont need a turbo afterall

A supercharger or turbo is a welcome addition to any car.

So, it's basically Subaru engine and Toyota drivetrain for both cars?

Both cars are pretty ugly after all in my opinion. I'm obviously just looking at the aesthetics only though.

If the car drives really well, I don't mind the ugliness. Look what I'm driving.

I prefer s2000 to be N/A

but i agree with the 86, even tho it is at 2700 lbs, but it is not a high Rev engine and it has no torque.. i dont know what that would feel like...

Usually it is either low rev with torque and high rev with no torque.

Wow, that looks great. The black one might pass for an Alfa Romeo (without the wing). I don't understand why Toyota likes to put clear tail lights in their sporty cars -- it looked bad on the IS300 and it looks bad here.

I'm sure aftermarket lights with red lenses will show up anyway.

They ruined this car. It looks like a typically generic Toyota shitbox.

The concept was fantastic. I would never buy this. It's just a more clever TC because it's RWD.

Shouldn't this thread be merged with the Subaru BRZ thread? Same car.

Looks way better with the red tails.

I don't quite get the ugly comments but looks are subjective. This will sell well as long as Toyota keeps it fresh.

The FT-86 isn't being sold in North America right? Just the Scion FRS and the Subaru BRZ?

I dunno, but IMO the concept had an awkward looking rear as well. Not that the production version is necessarily better, but yeah.

Someone mentioned it but maybe this and the Subaru page should be merged? If there ever were an example of badge engineering this is looking like it. The main differences I can spot are different badging, front bumper, tail lights, headlights.... yeah. That said, I think I prefer Subaru's version.

the wing on one of the concept mules was ricey but man, that spoiler on the GT 86 looks tacky. It's like they figured a trunk lid spoiler wasn't enough but then gave up midway through designing a different spoiler.

I would personally buy this car. It's like the Integra reborn, as phile put it.

I'd like to see some side by side pics of this and the BRZ. Just by flipping between threads I can't see very many differences between the two.

Hot GT 86 on the pipeline

Autocar

Toyota is already hard at work evaluating a high performance version of the new Toyota GT 86 sporting coupe. Chief engineer Tetsuo Tada says that not only is a supercharged GT 86 envisaged, test cars have already been made and are being evaluated by Toyota Racing Developments, the Japanese giant’s in house tuning division.

Tada-san favours the supercharger approach because it is simpler to achieve than increasing engine size and doesn’t wreck throttle response as turbocharging might. Indeed Toyota says that turbocharging along with four-wheel drive and wide tyres are what make sports cars boring to drive.

Supercharging is also a key competence for TRD which has been offering this kind of forced induction as an aftermarket kit for Toyotas since 1998. He would not be drawn on what kind of power a supercharged GT 86 might develop but Toyota is known to consider the car’s chassis could easily handle an additional 50bhp to go with the 197bhp already generated by its Subaru 2-litre flat four motor, a view with which, having driven the car, we wholly concur. However he says the TRD is also looking at ways of modifying the suspension to cope with the extra power, raising the possibility of a still more substantial power hike.

TRD’s most popular supercharger conversion is applied to the American market Tacoma pick up, boosting its 4-litre V6 engine from 233bhp to 301bhp suggesting that a 280bhp GT 86 with, critically, a massive boost in the low down torque the car currently lacks would be easily achieved. Even in the unlikely event that all the modifications added 100kg to the weight of the car, its power to weight ratio would still at least equal that of the 326bhp Nissan 370Z, a car capable of hitting 62mph from rest in 5.3sec and recording a top speed of 155mph. The standard GT 86 needs around 6.8sec and does 143mph. It is not yet known whether, if approved, the supercharged GT 86 would be offered as an aftermarket pack or as a model in its own right.

Tada also confirmed that it was so important to his team that even the standard GT 86 drifted properly that special tests were incorporated into the car’s development programme specifically for this purpose, ‘the first time this has ever been done on any Toyota.’

"Toyota says that turbocharging along with four-wheel drive and wide tyres are what make sports cars boring to drive."

Exsqueeze me?

I agree that turbos can screw up throttle response, but how does it possibly make the car boring to drive? I think the AWD part is a matter of opinion, both RWD and AWD are enjoyable in their own respects IMO.

This also sounds like a bit of a cheap shot at Subaru, since pretty much their entire hi-po lineup are turbo AWD cars.

I think they are saying that a traditional sports car has RWD...not AWD. RWD, when the chassis, is set up properly is a special driving experience. AWD is just different...everyone knows the fastest cars in existence, now, have AWD....that isn't the argument. It's just the feel and experience that are different. imho
