So my first drive of any Tesla car, being a X dual motor with the long range option. It belongs to a friend of mine, who just got it last week. Overall it was pretty awesome to drive, the acceleration is outstanding, handling/ride was very good, perhaps not Porsche Cayenne good but with 265mm tires and firm but comfortable spring/damper rates it handled well. Steering was very good for a electric assist, slightly vague with not much feedback. The infotainment system is the best of any vehicle I've ever driven or been in. The falcon doors are amazing to watch, being engineers my wife and I were equally amazed (OK, I was more amazed. Of all the features I though was really cool but didn't think I would is the panoramic windshield which has incredible high angle visibility. Build quality was actually really good, I can write some more later as it comes to me.

Wow, that’s impressive coming from a racing enthusiast like you.
My neighbor tried to order a model X from one of the Tesla centers and he was told a wait time of over one year which put him off. Anyone knows if the wait time is that long…?

I've heard like January, but it seems like if your wait time extends past the end of the quarter, you're probably looking at an indefinite wait time.

Early 2022 is what people are being told. Even the MY and the M3 are out to like end of September/October now.
Model X is a great car, super powerful and fun to drive. It is, however, rather expensive which is offputting compared to the competition.
For some, buying a Tesla would be like a dream. For Sergio Rodriguez, it turned into a bitter experience not only once but twice. His first Tesla Model X got famous worldwide when it presented a bizarre water leak on the A-pillar: water gushed from underneath it when he went through puddles. The Electrified Garage and Doctor Tesla clarified it was a windshield issue. Unable to fix it, Tesla bought back his lemon and sold Rodriguez a new Model X. Rodriguez returned it on August 10 and shared a video on Twitter about that: it was another lemon. 6 photos
This time, he faced different issues, but no less persistent, as his list clearly demonstrates.
“I tried to be patient. I bought it on March 21, 2020. Since then, I have had three window regulators on the driver’s side window replaced. They were adjusted three times adjusted to help it close, with six visits to the Tesla Service Center just for the windows.”
This was not even close to the worst problem he had – perhaps the most annoying.
“I had eight half shaft replacements and the driver’s side control arm replaced. The A/C temperature switch failed last year. The rear hatch motor failed and was replaced, apart from three sets of taillight assemblies, multiple glitches regarding the right rear passenger seatbelt, multiple glitches regarding park assist, multiple glitches with screens turning off while driving… I turned it in with half shafts bad and needing replacement and the driver’s side window acting up.”
The suspension problems with the Model X and Model S are also a known issue. They even have a fervorous enemy called Keith Leech, who is dedicated to denouncing "whompy wheels," as he likes to call them. In September 2020, a Swiss Tesla Model S owner experienced that while going 200 km/h (124 mph) on an Autobahn.
Apart from the issues, Rodriguez also thinks he will get rid of another nuisance: Tesla supporters. He experienced a hard time when he bought a Ford Mustang Mach-E and praised the car publicly.
“The attacks from the fanboys when I got the Mach-E changed my mind on keeping it. I truly feel I’m supporting their jacked-up behaviors by having that car association.”
Rodriguez recently told us that his first Model X is on its way to Ukraine. Considering it was never fixed when he owned it, it is very likely to arrive there with the same issues. We’ll pay careful attention when he googles the VIN of his second lemon in a while.
Hmm.
Current dealer websites, as of 8/12/21 3:17 CST
Model X LR: $95k
Model X Plaid: $115k
Ford Mach-E Select: $43k
Ford Mach-E GT: $60k
So, even the most expensive Mach-E is $35k less than the base X.
Highly doubt dealers are putting a $35k markup on the windshield. And if they are, and someone's willing to pay it, good/bad for them.
Tesla is probably striving to share some good news, but things are not easy for the company lately. Apart from having to wait until 2023 for its 4680 batteries, Autopilot accidents keep happening with emergency vehicles. If that was not enough, another car from the company caught fire. This time, it was a Tesla Model X inside the garage of the Tesla Service Center in Luxembourg. 27 photos
RTL and Luxembourg Wort have covered the fire and taken pictures that show what happened. According to their reports, the fire started around 9 AM on August 28 at the garage located at 45, rue d’Ivoix. That’s the back of the Tesla Service Center at 194, Route de Thionville.
None of the articles mention it was a Tesla Model X that caught fire. Most of the pictures only show it was a tall vehicle. It was only after checking the video made by Domingos Oliveira that we could see the back of the EV and confirm what Tesla it was. We asked RTL for authorization to use a screenshot but received no answer so far.
The firefighters had to put the Model X inside a container filled with water to prevent it from reigniting. That implies the issue was in the battery pack. While RTL said the causes are still under investigation, Luxembourg Wort placed a box inside its article explaining what a thermal runaway is.
We’ll have to wait for the investigations to understand what happened to this Model X. Hopefully, Luxembourg authorities are already analyzing the vehicle. In the Netherlands, no one apart from Volkswagen seems to be checking why a Volkswagen ID.3 caught fire in Groningen.
While Tesla is trying to settle the lawsuit with American customers, it is still fighting the Norwegian buyers to avoid paying each of them 136,000 Norwegian kroner, equivalent to $15,641 at the current exchange rate.
EPA Papers Show How Much Better The New Tesla Model X Is Vs Old
The car has 30% more power, but weighs 4% less.
Oct 29, 2021 at 5:21pm ET 33 By: Mark KaneIn interesting data about the new Tesla Model X Long Range was recently found in the Tesla's application documents sent to EPA.
An EV enthusiast - temp (@tempermanant) via Teslarati - notes several differences between the new 2021 model year version and the previous 2020. Documents for the Tesla Model X Plaid are not yet available.
The battery weight reduction is 14% (from 625 kg to 537 kg), as the energy density improved 13% from 165 Wh/kg to 186 Wh/kg. That's a solid 88 kg less.
As we know, the refreshed Model S/Model Xhave fully redesigned modules and battery pack (see here). This allowed to increase the pack's energy density by 13%. The new nominal system voltage is 410 V (nominal) compared to 360 V previously. Another thing is that the new Tesla Model X has a third more power and currently both the front and rear motors are Permanent Magnet - Synchronous Reluctance Motor - PMSRM. Previously, the front motor was an induction type.
We can see the new front and rear drive units of the Tesla Model S Plaid here and here, but the Plaid has two motors in the rear.
The front motor is rated at 243 kW, while the rear at 248 kW, compared to 180 kW and 189 kW previously. The battery capacity appears to be around 100 kWh, but there is no direct info about that.
Automatic wipers and automatic lights are among the most popular features of modern vehicles. Nevertheless, Tesla owners complain that these features are broken on their cars. While Automatic High Beam has improved recently, the Autowipers continue to make Tesla owners angry in the rain.
Convenience features are popular with car buyers, who try to improve their experience behind the wheel with all sorts of automatic functions. Automatic headlights help illuminate the road without blinding other drivers, automatic wipers clean the windshield in the rain, and automatic climate control is a set-and-forget feature that takes care of thermal comfort without user intervention. Nevertheless, living with a broken air conditioning unit is possible, but non-functional wipers can affect safety and make driving more difficult in adverse weather.
Automatic wipers rely on an optical sensor to detect raindrops on the windshield. The more raindrops, the less light gets reflected by the windshield surface, and this info is used to adjust the wiper’s speed. The system usually works reliably, even in budget cars, so few people care about this feature. Except when it’s not working, of course. Surprisingly, the automatic wipers function is one of the sore spots of Tesla cars, which is unexpected considering all the technology crammed inside.
Many Tesla owners complained for a long time about the Autowipers not working as they should. They tend to dry-wipe the windshield when there is no raindrop and don’t work when it’s raining. This has been recently revealed by Tesla white hat hacker Green (@greentheonly), who drives a 2020 Tesla Model X Long Range+. Although his car has the option to adjust Autowipers sensitivity, this simply doesn’t work.
Tesla Model X also offers the option to continuously wipe the windshield. Nevertheless, Autosteer requires wipers to be set to Auto without the possibility of changing this setting. When it rains, it’s either wipers or Autopilot, which is kind of silly. Of course, the driver can trigger a single wipe by pushing the button at the end of the stalk. There’s another problem, though, because doing so will activate the wipers to their highest speed setting, which is also annoying. Many Tesla owners report not using the Autopilot when it’s raining because of that, which defeats the purpose.
This problem appears connected to the new set of sensors introduced with HW3 because it’s not affecting older models. As somebody pointed out, the rain sensor is positioned in the wrong spot at the top of the windshield, where the wind pushes the raindrops out of its way. This makes the lower part of the windshield to be all wet before the rain sensor even gets some raindrops. Nevertheless, Green explains that the Autowipers used to work well in the past with the same hardware setup, which points to a software problem. Hopefully, Tesla will fix it in a future software update.
^ The auto-high beams on our Expedition are similar. Lots of 'false positives' leading to seeming like you're flashing oncoming traffic. It's also random when the HB will activate; sometimes it's right after the oncoming car passes, other times, it's 1/2 mile later.
The Explorer I had for a loaner was a lot better, but also 4 years newer.
Auto wipers on mine were awful compared to other cars. It ran them wide open almost all the time, even if it was a slight drizzle.
Same.
My biggest gripe with the 3 are the auto wipers. They are always wiping way faster than needed, and they aren't speed dependent (which seems like an easy fix). Stopped at a red light in steady rain keeps them on at the max speed. I find myself hitting the single wipe button instead of turning on the wipers, unless it's pouring.
Tesla discontinuing Model S and Model X to make room for robots
Jan 28, 2026
Tesla will discontinue the Model S and Model X in the second quarter of 2026, Elon Musk said in an earnings call with investors today.
Musk said the reasons for cancelling the vehicle programs was to make room at Tesla’s Fremont factory for production of its Optimus humanoid robot.
The Model S is Tesla’s luxury sedan, first released in 2012, while the Model X was its SUV with gull-wing doors, introduced in 2015. Sales of both vehicles has been declining steadily, as the company shifted focus to its mass-market Model 3 and Model Y.
In 2025, Tesla sold 50,850 “other models,” a category that includes Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. That represented a 40.2 percent decrease in sales, year over year.
