Subaru profit falls 27% despite higher N. America sales

TOKYO -- Subaru Corp.'s operating profit tumbled 27 percent in the just-ended fiscal year, as foreign exchange losses and spiraling costs broke a three-year run of record financial results.

Subaru, which changed is corporate name from Fuji Heavy Industries on April 1, said operating income fell to 410.8 billion yen ($3.69 billion) for the company's full fiscal year ended March 31. Net income dropped 35 percent to 282.4 billion yen ($2.54 billion).

The slide ended 3 straight years of record operating profits and net income, despite that fact that the Japanese carmaker exceeded annual sales of 1 million units for the 1st time.

Revenue increased 2.9 percent to 3.33 trillion yen ($29.9 billion) in the 12 months ended March 31, driven by an 11 percent increase in worldwide sales to 1.1 million vehicles, the company said Tuesday, while announcing financial results.

Subaru posted record revenue and unit sales for a 5th straight year.
North America, which accounts for about 68 percent of Subaru's global sales, underpinned the sales expansion. Regional sales there grew 14 percent to 721,000 vehicles. U.S. sales expanded to 667,600 from 582,700 the year before. Canada sales grew to 53,100 from 47,600.

European sales declined 2.6 percent to 46,000 vehicles, while Subaru volume in Japan and China also posted declines for the fiscal year.

"U.S. demand has peaked out," Subaru CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said. "The market environment has increasingly become tougher. We will carefully examine the situation and will take the necessary steps to maintain our sales, including incentives."

Yoshinaga said Subaru will adjust U.S. production to slowing demand to clear inventories.

Despite the record volume, losses from the Japanese yen's appreciation against the dollar and other currencies broadsided profits, costing 143.8 billion yen ($1.29 billion) in the fiscal year.

Other increasing costs, including quality outlays related to the recall of defective Takata airbag inflators, and higher r&d and capital investment lopped another 169.1 billion yen ($1.52 billion) off full-year operating profit. Subaru has paid out more in the past fiscal year to expand production capacity in North America and Japan to feed booming demand.

Regional operating profit in North America fell 8 percent to 105.9 billion yen ($951.8 million), as average U.S. incentive spending rose to $1,450 in the just-ended fiscal year, from $900 the year before, Subaru said.

Looking ahead to the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2018, Subaru expects rising sales and moderating foreign exchange rates to buoy operating profit and net income.

In announcing its full-year outlook, Subaru predicted that global operating income will remain essentially unchanged at 410.0 billion yen ($3.69 billion), in the current 12-month period.

Net income is forecast to inch ahead 0.9 percent to 285.0 billion yen ($2.56 billion).
Revenue is seen increasing 2.8 percent to 3.42 trillion yen ($30.7 billion), as global sales expand 3.8 percent to 1.12 million vehicles. Sales in North America are expected to climb 3.1 percent to 933,000 vehicles. U.S. volume should increase to 688,000 units, while Canada climbs to 55,000. European sales are seen sliding to 39,000 vehicles.

The sales outlook puts Subaru well on its way to its mid-term global sales target of 1.2 million vehicles for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021.

In the company's fiscal 4th quarter ended March 31, operating profit fell 20 percent to 104.1 billion yen ($935.6 million), while net income dropped 24 percent to 74.8 billion yen ($672.3 million). The strengthening yen and higher warranty claims undercut quarterly profits.

Global revenue increased 10 percent to 898.1 billion yen ($8.07 billion) in the January-March period, while worldwide sales added 13 percent to 278,700 vehicles. U.S. volume climbed 22 percent to 166,300 vehicles in the quarter. Sales in Canada grew 16 percent to 12,600 units.

European sales dropped 12 percent to 12,500 units.

Subaru, which had been known as Fuji Heavy Industries since 1953, changed its name to Subaru Corp. to improve brand recognition of its leading products.

The move is meant to bolster branding at a company that makes everything from industrial products to helicopters but draws the vast majority of its cash from Subaru vehicles.

Subaru Corporation officially joined the Toyota Motor group according to a filing made in Japan today. Toyota increased its stake in Subaru Corporation from 16.83 percent to 20 percent which means a strengthening of their ties. The announcement was made last September, and a report from Nippon in Japan revealed it is now official. What will the expanded partnership mean for Subaru models like the 2020 Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, and Ascent?

This is what won’t happen. Subaru will not be absorbed into Toyota Motor and become a fully owned subsidiary at least not in the immediate future. But Seeking Alpa says Subaru is expected to become “an affiliated company of Toyota down the road.” They won’t be building more vehicles together that will share identical styling but have different nameplates like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 sport coupes. But big changes are coming to Subaru.

Existing Subaru models like 2020 Outback will be getting hybrid power
What it will mean is Toyota’s larger stake will create new opportunities for the much smaller Subaru with its existing models and new models will be coming. Subaru announced recently, by 2030, 40 percent of all Subaru global sales will come from electric vehicles (EVs) or hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). By the first half of the 2030s, all Subaru vehicles sold worldwide will have some form of hybrid power or all-electric technology. Subaru will need Toyota’s hybrid technology to do this.

What does the increased Toyota stake mean for SUV shoppers?
The newly-increased partnership will bring more new all-wheel-drive models like the Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid launched last year. Subaru will be able to expand the use of the Toyota Hybrid System in other Subaru models like the Outback, Forester, and Ascent models.

The Subaru Forester will keep its unique identity
Both Subaru and Toyota believe this increased stake will help them build better automobiles for their customers. Subaru says, "In this once-in-a-century period of profound transformation, by strengthening our bonds and aligning capabilities, we aim to make ever-better cars, better than what either company has been able to achieve thus far.”

More changes are coming as Subaru will also collaborate with Toyota to develop its first all-electric all-wheel-drive vehicle for release sometime around 2030. This all-new vehicle will be distinctively a Subaru.

Subaru models will be different from Toyota
Subaru President Tomomi Nakamura says they will strive to remain “different from (Toyota)”, and will further hone the distinctive qualities that make a Subaru a Subaru and will “maintain the unique attributes our customers have come to expect.” Those core values are all-wheel-drive, a rugged “go-anywhere” attitude, fun-to-drive, and safety will remain a priority.

Some things won’t be changing for Subaru, but the expanded Toyota partnership will bring an all-electric all-wheel vehicle that will arrive by the end of this decade. Big changes are coming to existing nameplates like the 2020 Outback wagon, Forester compact SUV, and Ascent family hauler models. They will be electrified with hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology by the first half of the 2030s.

Subaru wants in on the sweet, sweet profit margins that upgraded models of current production cars bring, so it’s going ahead with the strategy by forming a new sub-brand for the Outback and Forester.

The Japanese carmaker is no longer oblivious to the upsell. It will launch a sub-brand called Wilderness, per Automotive News. The report calls it an off-road sub-brand, which is kind of like when Dodge Ram pickups spun off into their own brand. Or even something like VW’s Chinese brand Jetta.

The new Subaru models, which are set to launch along with the 2022 Outback, will sport off-road upgrades like higher ground clearance and off-road tires straight from the dealer.

But it’s not exactly clear whether this is going to be a distinct brand or if it’s an edition of the Outback and Forester that will sit atop the trim levels. If it is set to be a whole brand, I think they could have come up with something better than Wilderness. Maybe something with a space theme, or something space adjacent, since Subaru is known for its Pleiades badge.

Sure, Wilderness is in line with the theme Subaru is going for, but the two nameplates already have that covered. And it’s a going to feel a little strange referring to a souped-up Subie as a Wilderness Forester or Wilderness Outback. Or if it’s just a trim, then maybe Wilderness will be tacked on at the end, like a Wrangler Rubicon.

But I find it odd, because wilderness is a region among nature. And a forest is a wooded area outdoors. Uh, I think there’s some overlap there. Same thing with the Outback, though to a lesser degree. The Outback refers to the remote region of Australia. So a Wilderness Outback sounds conflicting. The naming scheme with this sub-brand (or edition) sounds silly.

But the dealers were clamoring for it and the chairman of the Subaru National Retailer Advisory Board, Patrick Wergin, said the new sub-brand is meant to satisfy consumer demand. Wergin said the following, per Automotive News:

“We’re hoping that the Wilderness edition will attract consumers that are active lifestyle families and that do like to go out and maybe do a little bit more off-roading. We’re excited about the opportunity to have this vehicle capture new clients in the segment.”
Wally Sommer, president of a Subaru dealership in Mequon, Wisconsin, backed up Wergin, saying:

“We’ve had customers asking for, and retailers have identified the demand for, these more capable off-road-type vehicles[.] Subaru has responded, and people are going to be very pleased with the product when they see it.”
I’m still a little suspicious of the move, but if it gets drivers excited about the beefier station wagons people insist on calling CUVs (in the case of the Outback) then by all means Subaru, go wild.

The biggest issue with Subarus for off roading isn't the ground clearance or tires, it's the CVT. Until the replace it with a fixed gear set, they won't be anything more than soft roaders.

I've seen a few dealer modded Outbacks & Crosstreks, mostly wheels/tires & some accessories. Looks good, but agree, far from being off-road-able.

Subaru is famous for its symmetrical all-wheel drive system, but brand’s lineup isn’t exactly rugged.

That’s about to change as Subaru will introduce their off-road focused Wilderness sub-brand on March 30th.

The company is keeping details under wraps, but said the “next evolution of Subaru capability is coming and it is packed with functional technology and rugged features, inside and out.” The brand added that fans should “prepare for a new level of adventure.”

That isn’t much to go on, but the first Wilderness variant is expected to be based on the Outback. It should be followed by a Forester Wilderness later this year.

Spy photographers have snapped the Outback Wilderness in the past and it’s slated to have a rugged body kit, additional ground clearance and unique wheels wrapped in meatier tires. The model should also have special badging and possibly some interior upgrades. Judging by today’s statement about “functional technology,” we can also expect an off-road focused driving mode or something similar.

While the Outback comes standard with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 182 hp (136 kW / 185 PS) and 176 lb-ft (239 Nm) of torque, speculation has suggested the Wilderness package may only be available on models with the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 260 hp (194 kW / 264 PS) and 277 lb-ft (376 Nm) of torque. That remains unconfirmed, but we’ll find out soon enough.

Another automaker has succumbed to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage crisis. A Subaru of American spokesperson has confirmed to Reuters it is suspending production at its Lafayette, Indiana factory starting now until the end of the month. No precise date was given for when the factory will come back online.

But unlike other automakers who have multiple facilities scattered throughout the country and the world, such as General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, Subaru only has two factories, in Japan and Indiana. The former, for now, is still up and running. The Indiana plant's shutdown means around 15,000 vehicles won't be produced. The Subaru Outback, Legacy, Ascent, and Impreza are all built there. The Forester, Crosstrek, and BRZ are made in Japan.

It's unclear how long this will affect sales in the US and North America. Dealerships will have to make do with existing stock for at least the next few weeks, perhaps longer. Despite its small size compared to other Japanese giants like Toyota and Honda, Subaru has developed an immensely loyal following in the US.

It's not unusual for dealerships to sell vehicles the moment they're delivered because demand is so high. This was the case for the Ascent and Forester when both were brand new. The company spokesperson added the lack of chips was due to the global shortage rather than a recent fire at a chip factory.

Subaru now joins other big-name carmakers pressuring the US government to help find a solution, but it's not simple. Setting up a new chip production facility from scratch would take years, so one alternative being considered is to have Intel start producing chips specifically for automakers rather than electronic device companies.

Even if a deal is made the shortage won't end overnight. Some analysts believe it'll extend through the rest of the year. Meanwhile, automakers are losing money, assembly line workers are seeing their hours cut only months after being furloughed because of the pandemic, and dealers will lack vehicles to sell.

Yeah, it's real bad. I was walking my dog through some car dealerships when I was stuck in Springfield, Illinois. There were no cars to see.

Subaru of America is hit with a new class action involving 2013-2021 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and other models equipped with the brand's EyeSight driver assist technology. The new Subaru lawsuit was recently filed in the district court of New Jersey.

Attorneys Berger Montague PC and Capstone Law APC represent Laura and James Sampson, Anthony Ventura and Joanne Fulgieri Ventura, Elizabeth Wheatley, and Shirley Reinhard. The plaintiffs claim Subaru's EyeSight includes automatic emergency braking (AEB), and lane-keep assist technology is dangerous.

Torque News has reported the advantages of the Subaru EyeSight safety technology and its many benefits. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given 2021 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and other models a 'Superior' rating in front crash prevention when equipped with EyeSight driver assist technology.

The new lawsuit against Subaru claims the automaker failed to warn customers about the automatic emergency braking system, which allegedly has defects with software calibration from multiple control modules. The plaintiffs say the brakes activate when there are no objects in front or behind the vehicle.

Other complaints say the Japanese automaker's automatic emergency braking fails to engage when objects are in front of the 2013-2021 Subaru models equipped with EyeSight. The lawsuit alleges this is caused by errors between the transmission, brakes, and cameras located at the top of the windshield.

The new Subaru class-action lawsuit says the EyeSight's lane keep assist feature is also defective. It alleges errors in the system "correct the vehicle's steering when the driver is trying to change lanes, is driving on the road with construction barriers, or if the road has multiple lines due to construction."

The lawsuit documents many owners who claim the lane keep assist system will shut down entirely until the vehicle is restarted, preventing the cars from providing owners were promised in the automaker's advertising. The lawsuit also alleges the lane-keep system jerks the steering wheel and "even steers the vehicle into other vehicles."

The lawsuit alleges that the lane-keep assist problems are due to poor software calibration from the power steering control module and other modules.

The 2021 Subaru Forester, 2021 Subaru Outback, 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, and other models now come standard with EyeSight driver assist technology. The plaintiffs allege the problems make the safety technology useless and dangerous and that Subaru increases its profits by inflating the prices of its most popular models. Torque News will bring updates on the new Subaru lawsuit as they become available.

Subaru has released pricing information for the 2023 Outback and the 2023 Legacy, which both received a mid-cycle refresh that includes design tweaks and additional technology features. The two models get a higher price, and Subaru made some changes to the trim structure.

Built in Indiana, the 2023 Outback carries a base price of $29,620 including destination. For context, the 2022 model cost $28,070. Part of the increase comes from the destination charge, which grew from $1,125 in 2022 to $1,225 in 2023. Pricing for the full range is as follows:
  • Outback: $29,620 ($1,550 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Premium: $31,920 ($1,650 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Onyx Edition: $34,720 (new for 2023)
  • Outback Limited: $36,520 ($1,800 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Touring: $41,070 ($2,450 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Onyx Edition XT: $39,820 ($3,550 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Wilderness: $39,670 ($1,550 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Limited XT: $40,920 ($1,800 more than in 2022)
  • Outback Touring XT: $43,520 ($2,450 more than in 2022)
The nip-and-tuck isn't the only change that Subaru made to its popular station wagon for the 2023 model year. We're told that the EyeSight suite of electronic driving aids is smoother thanks to hardware and software updates, models equipped with the 11.6-inch touchscreen gain what3words compatibility, the Touring trim gets a digital rear-view mirror and a Wide Angle Mono Camera, and the Onyx Edition model can be ordered with the naturally-aspirated, 2.5-liter flat-four (it was exclusively offered with the turbocharged, 2.4-liter flat-four in 2022).

If it's the 2023 Legacy that you're after, you'll be asked to pay $25,415 for a base model compared to $23,955 in 2022. Here again, some of the increase is due to a higher destination charge: Subaru charged $960 in 2022, and that figure has increased to $1,020 for 2023 models.

Pricing for the full lineup is as follows:
  • Legacy: $25,415 ($1,460 more than in 2022)
  • Legacy Premium: $27,715 ($1,510 more than in 2022)
  • Legacy Sport: $34,915 ($5,165 more than in 2022)
  • Legacy Limited: $32,465 (1,560 more than in 2022)
  • Legacy Touring XT: $38,715 ($1,560 more than in 2022)
The second-to-last trim level, which was called Limited XT and priced at $35,455, has been axed from the range. As a trade-off, the Sport trim gains the turbocharged flat-four, a sport-tuned suspension system, and a handful of specific design cues inside and out like 18-inch wheels, red accents, and cloth upholstery with red stitching. Subaru also made the same tech improvements that the Outback benefits from.

Subaru dealers across the nation will begin receiving the 2023 Outback and 2023 Legacy this fall.

https://www.carscoops.com/2023/11/su...nt-driveshaft/

Subaru’s claims of providing drivers with full-time symmetrical all-wheel-drive are being challenged by a cracking front driveshaft. The problem stems from a manufacturing error at its supplier’s factory, and is the subject of a new recall.

In total, 3,732 vehicles are impacted by this issue. The majority, comprising 2,835 examples, are 2024 Subaru Crosstreks. Additionally, there are 413 units of the 2023 WRX, 328 examples of the 2023-2024 Foresters, and 156 units of the 2024 Imprezas potentially implicated in the recall.

The problem stems from the outer race of the front driveshaft assemblies, which are produced by NTN Corporation, in Japan. The company first became aware that something was amiss when it noticed cracking along the part’s outer diameter after quenching.

At first, it was believed that the issue had been identified before any outer races were sent to Subaru. However, upon closer examination, it became evident that the root cause of the cracking, attributed to a cooling problem during the heat treatment process, had persisted for a longer duration than initially assumed.

As a result of the heat management trouble, itself caused by a leaky water pipe, the inner surface of the race may have cooled improperly, leading to cracking when it was being quenched. NTN checked its manufacturing records, and together with Subaru determined that vehicles made between September 1 and 13, 2023, may have received the problematic part.

What happens if it cracks?

If the outer race cracks in those vehicles, it could lead to a loss of power for the driver, which leaves them vulnerable to being hit from behind. It may also mean that the vehicle can roll away while it is stopped if the parking brake is not applied.

Fortunately, Subaru is not yet aware of any accidents that have been caused by this manufacturing error. In an attempt to prevent any from occurring, it will start reaching out to owners on January 8, 2024, and will ask them to return their vehicle to a nearby dealership. There, a technician will inspect the left and right front driveshafts, and will replace them as necessary, at no cost to the owner.
