Friend of mine in the know says the S/C comes out in Nov for about $3k.

Trying to find out if that's installed or just the kit.

The tc is a new car, the civic is not. Honda can very easily drop the k20 in the 05 civic and blow right by toyota.

Honda could but they won't

With the exception of the S2000, Honda is far too conservative to do anything like that.

Its not just about Honda matching the Tc's horsepower rating. The Tc comes with much more standard equipment compared with the Civic. It is almost as if Toyota is dumping these Scions on the market.

I also wish Honda would give the new Civic the k20 but again they are too conservative right now. All of the sporty Hondas have faded away - The CRX Si, Prelude Si 4WS, Type R Integras, etc. If the rumor about the impending death of the NSX is true all Honda will have left is the S2000

Test drove one today with my friend who is thinking about getting one. Good looking car, runs good and everything. She probably won't get it though 'cause of the interior. The panels and dash looks and feels REALLY cheap.

i saw one yesterday! very sweet looking car (considering the price range)
the supercharger kit comes installed as an option from the factory, like if you were to get a cd player option.

Compares positively with the Tiburon GTV6 6MT in terms of performance and cuts the price by about $1000 (after Hyundai Rebate).

MSRP to MSRP comparison you'd be able to get a Tc with S/C for about the same as the Tibby.

However, both are blown off the street by the SRT-4.

2005 Scion tC: Who's Your Daddy? Staid Toyota Gets a Hip Implant
By NICK KURCZEWSKI

Published: July 25, 2004
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/25/au...=all&position=

SCION is the wild child of the reserved, respectable Toyota family - the tattooed, body-pierced, trend-setting offspring with a homework assignment: bring some fresh faces into the showrooms. On sale in California since June of last year, Scions became available only this summer in the rest of the country.

So far, the best-known Scion (pronounced SIGH-un) has been the quirky xB, generally known as "the boxy one." Its Legoland looks are polarizing, yet love it or hate it, the xB gets noticed. Much to Toyota's surprise, the xB is outselling the more mainstream xA hatchback by 2 to 1.

The nationwide rollout of the Scion brand coincides with the introduction of a third car, the 2005 tC hatchback coupe. Like the other Scions, this $16,465 model plays in the shallow end of the new-car pricing pool; the xA is $13,795 and the xB is $14,195.

In a recent interview, Jim Farley, vice president of Scion, said California had served as a first-year "laboratory" for the brand. Data from AutoPacific, an automotive research company, indicates that the experiment paid off: 76 percent of Scion buyers were first-time Toyota customers.

Though they are hardly expensive, Scions are not being marketed as economy cars - commercials place them in urban settings with a thumping hip-hop backbeat. Mr. Farley said Scion's marketing tactics were neither confrontational nor traditional; instead, buyers can "discover Scion" by themselves, at their own pace.

Scion has the youngest customers of any car company, with an average age of 38. Drivers tend to be younger still, since many parents buy the cars for their children. Strong sales among minorities have also validated Scion's urban-theme campaign.

Creating a youth-oriented line of cars is a daunting task. Several car companies, including Toyota itself, have tried to seduce Generation Y only to be rebuffed like a lounge lizard prowling a college bar. Honda thought it had the youth market covered with its Element - a sort of Swiss Army knife on wheels - but while that boxy car has sold fairly well, it has often gone to baby boomers who need versatile trucklets to haul their petunias and power tools.

Toyota's first attempt to woo youngsters, the Genesis Project, included three vehicles: the dowdy Echo subcompact; the edgy Celica sporty coupe (whose time in the spotlight lasted about as long as William Hung's singing career) and the MR2 Spyder, a roadster that was pricey and, lacking a trunk, impractical. Toyota recently said it was discontinuing the Celica and MR2.

But executives insist that they did their homework with Scion. Jim Press, chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales USA, sees Scion as a bridge to new customers.

"We realize that the success of our company is that we grew up with baby boomers," he said. "A successful company has to reinvent itself and remain relevant to newer generations." Mr. Press stressed that Toyota wanted to avoid a perception of Scion as "old people trying to make a young person's car."

Mr. Farley stressed the need for authenticity. "If you're going to be a car company" with youth appeal, he said, "you'd better come out with cars that are refreshing and honest."

Two-thirds of Toyota dealerships have agreed to sell Scions, setting up special areas where potential buyers can relax, examine the vehicles and "customize" them on computers linked to Scion's Web site.

This ease of customization is vital to Scion's credibility with the sport-import car tuners who have had enormous influence on the auto industry (and on youthful trends) in recent years. Neon interior lighting, wake-the-dead stereo systems and stiffer shocks are among the dozens of optional add-ons. Buyers end up with one-of-a-kind cars, and dealers pocket some of the cash that might have gone to aftermarket suppliers.

Yet owners are proving to be demanding, and they have not cut the xA or xB any slack. In the latest initial quality survey by J. D. Power & Associates, the upstart brand placed near the bottom of the rankings - an unfamiliar place for Toyota. The company is looking for the tC, a more substantial car in many ways, to pacify these picky customers.

"The tC is to Scion what the original LS 400 was to Lexus," Mr. Farley said. With its refinement and reasonable price, the LS rewrote the rules for luxury cars. Toyota hopes the tC will attract young buyers who aspire to sporty European cars.

Over all, the styling is a cohesive design that looks solid and expensive. The fenders' strong lines and pronounced wheel openings suggest recent Audis. The headlamps and kink in the rear roof pillar are BMW-esque, and the hood's shape brings to mind either Volvo or Lexus's own IS 300 sport sedan.

The tC that I tested was a classy dark blue with stylish alloy wheels. My hunch that the car's subtle good looks would go unnoticed was proved wrong the first time I parked in my Brooklyn neighborhood. A few tough-looking young men stopped their basketball game to say they thought the car was pretty cool. Mired in Holland Tunnel traffic the next day, a truck driver shouted across the din that the tC looked sharp.

The interior is nicely thought out and well put together, though the expanses of black plastic won't fool you into thinking this is a Bentley. Yet the fit and finish are better than that of many cars costing twice as much.

The nicely sculptured instrument panel has a cover that conceals the radio faceplate - a nice touch for the larcenous city. Silver-face gauges are easy to read, and it's easy to get comfortable with the chunky steering wheel and well-placed pedals.

Whoever designed the dead pedal - a sort of left-side footrest - deserves a raise. Perfectly placed, it is the best I have experienced. The damping of the controls and soft finishes on often-touched surfaces show that a great deal of attention went into getting the interior just right.

My test car's entertaining touches included a shift knob shaped like a microphone, blue neon interior lighting and illuminated cup holders. My partner and I, both in our mid-20's, bought a bottle of water just to watch it mysteriously glow. (No, we don't get out much.) And while the neon illumination borders on tacky, it proved convenient when we dropped toll money on the floor at night.

The standard twin sunroofs prompted one complaint. Although the glass panels give the cabin an airy feel, the blinds covering them are thin, and the material looks like the pull shades in a dorm room.

Other quibbles include an optional subwoofer that eats up a large amount of the trunk (though it improves the audio) and air-conditioning that barely kept up with the 90-degree heat during a weekend drive.

During this trip I discovered how roomy the tC can be. Things can get awfully cozy when four people travel in an economy coupe, but the tC had room to spare and lots of cubbies to store the detritus of modern life.

Loosely based on the front-drive Toyota Avensis sedan sold overseas, the tC's European breeding shines through. The car proved adept on highways and city streets. The steering is communicative, growing heavier at highway speeds.

Engine power is linear; the 160 horsepower was not overwhelming, but quite capable. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine even makes a nice little growl. (A hot supercharged version is also planned.)

The precise shift action of the five-speed manual, and the clutch's smooth operation, might sway some Gen Y-ers to shift for themselves. (A four-speed automatic is optional.) The mileage rating with the manual is 22 m.p.g. in town and 29 on the highway.

Down the road, Scion plans to keep its lineup fresh by replacing vehicles with entirely new models, rather than refining the same idea year after year. The biggest challenge will be maintaining the brand's underground appeal if 2005 sales reach Toyota's projection of 100,000 plus.

The xB and xA proved that Scion could think outside the box, even inside a box. The tC takes the idea a step further in refinement and style while adding more driving pleasure to the equation. Scion might be a wild child, but the tC proves that the brand is keeping up its grades.

2005 Scion tC
We finally test it

By Karl Funke
Photography: Les Bidrawn

Like white guys with Afros, small cars are back in style. Leave it to the Japanese car manufacturers to be on the cutting edge of this new trend, just as the American public is clambering to trade in its fleet of pork-burning SUVs for transportation that's actually capable of beating 10 mpg on the highway.

Two issues ago, we gave you our first driving impression of Scion's new tC, the first Scion built specifically for the U.S. market and the first to look like something we'd actually enjoy driving. Since that brief spin around Washington D.C., we've been able to get our hands on one to drive on the highways of Southern California and the wide, paved stretches of California Speedway. For the most part, our test numbers place the car's performance firmly within our initial expectations. It won't break your neck, and it won't beat a Miata up that mountain, but the car definitely does offer impressive value for its modest purchase price.

Scion rates the tC's power output at 160 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque at 5700 rpm and 4000 rpm, respectively. Our test mule was a preproduction model that was modified with a polished AEM cold-air intake and a TRD exhaust, two enhancements that will be available directly from your Scion dealer, so we were unable to get absolute numbers for a bone-stock example. On our house Dynojet, our tC laid down 141-peak hp and 152 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, so we expect the modifications added around 10 hp more than the factory bottom line.
With our test monkey behind the wheel, the tC managed to eke out a 15.7-second quarter mile at 88.2 mph at the track, just as we originally predicted. Remember, the car also weighs close to 3,000 pounds. Thanks to a relatively generous torque curve, 0-to-30 mph was achieved in just under 3 seconds. At higher velocities the 2AZ-FE begins to pant a little, taking more than twice as long to go from 60 to 100 as it does to go from 0 to 60, which it manages in 7.8 seconds.

The acceleration numbers are nearly identical to a stock SVT Focus, which costs about $2,000 more, and about half a second off a Lexus IS 300 (with which it shares the same tires). Still, the Scion's acceleration is pretty good for the money you pay, and it does a pretty nice burnout too.

Although the tC's acceleration numbers more or less met our expectations, its handling could be better. The tC pulled 0.82g on the skidpad and slipped through the slalom at only 66.1 mph. Neither figure is particularly impressive.

The tC sports a rigid chassis and good balance, but during hard maneuvering body roll becomes increasingly evident. The true detractors from the car's handling, however, are the stock Bridgestone Potenzas. Push the car to its limits and its obvious the tires are giving up early. The car wants to do what you ask of it, but the Potenzas just don't have the necessary stick. Makes us wonder how much better this car would do if equipped with the optional lightweight 18-inch TRD wheels and Pirelli P Zero rubber, not to mention the available TRD springs and dampers. In handling terms, the most comparable cars we've tested are the Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancer (0.82g and 67.2 mph) and the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V (0.88g and 69.2 mph). The Scion is cheaper than both.

The tC's braking performance was decent, though not as impressive as other stock Toyota setups we've tested. The four-wheel discs hauled our tC down from 60 mph in 127 feet, and from 70 mph in 174. Better tires would significantly shorten these stopping distances as well.

Performance numbers aside, the tC driving experience is pleasant. We complained two months ago that the seats don't offer enough lateral support, but after a week of daily use we conclude they're comfortable. The climate and stereo controls are simple and intuitive, the shifter works well enough and the stereo sounds pretty good, though not as good as the throaty sounds from the TRD muffler when you stand on the throttle.

The most impressive thing about the interior is the surfeit of passenger space. Even the back seat offers an amazing amount of legroom. Four full-size adults fit easily in the tC without worry of what they should do with their knees. Conversely, the rear cargo area is amazingly small, despite the fact that the car is a hatchback. You win some, you lose some, we suppose.

Overall, there's little doubt the Scion tC offers decent bang for the buck. For those who don't eat, breathe and shit high performance, it's a very good entry-level commuter as it sits. And for those who do, but don't have tons of cash to spend, the availability of a comprehensive, factory-supported aftermarket performance program makes it a great entry-level pocket hot rod. Scion has officially joined the hot hatch market.

I'm sure that would be the last thing on my mind with that kick ass engine, could probably rip out the whole interior and still get the same grin. As for the scion, the engine or the weight seem to be its achileas heel.

Scion to offer factory supercharged version of tC coupe this spring, exec says - - By KATHY JACKSON | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek

Scion will offer a supercharged version of its tC sport coupe.

In an interview with Automotive News after his presentation at the J.D. Power and Associates International Automotive Roundtable on Friday, Scion Vice President Jim Farley said the model should arrive around April.

The tC will be the first vehicle sold by Toyota in the United States that will get a supercharged model produced by the factory, Farley said.

The Toyota racing division added superchargers to some Matrix wagon models as an aftermarket accessory, he said.

The tC "will be the first one from scratch," Farley said.

Scion, Toyota's youth division, was introduced in select markets in 2003 and rolled out nationally last year. The tC, which went on sale last fall, is its third nameplate.

The tC produces 160 hp, he said. The xA and xB hatchback models each make 108 hp.

Farley would not say how much more horsepower the supercharged model will make.

The division decided to add the model because 30 percent of respondents to an online survey said they would like a supercharged version, he said.

"We had no idea it would be that popular," Farley said.

In 2004, 99,259 Scions were sold. Farley projects sales of 120,000 units in 2005: 40 percent tC, 40 percent xB and 20 percent xA.

Neat car but I don't think I can fit inside. Toyota will probably sell tons of them to the young ricer crowd.

Claimed Crank Hp: 160 hp @ 5700 rpm
Claimed Crank Torque: 163 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
Measured Wheel Hp: 152 hp @ 5700 rpm
Measured Wheel Torque: 141 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
The car's underrated. At even a 14% loss from crank to wheels (standard for 5MT), this engine's making ~175hp. Pretty impressive. Nothing like the SRT-4 though

My little brothers friend has one that he drives daily. He also drives back and forth from NY to Florida. It has 80k on the odo and is about 2 years old. He also has a wastegate, blow off valve, cat back, stage 2 with turbo toys and suspension work. He beats the living shit outta it, and has pulled high 11's with the little bitch on drag radials. Knock on wood, the car has had not one issue.

Toyota Recalls Scion tC - - Source: The Car Connection

The Scion tC is on the recall list this week, as Toyota prepares to bring back 30,000 of the coupes for a problem with side airbags. Toyota tells the Associated Press that the side and curtain airbags could deploy if the doors are slammed with high force in affected vehicles, if the ignition is on or if the doors are slammed within 90 seconds of the ignition being keyed. The recall applies to about 20 percent of all tC coupes built in 2005 and 2006. Toyota has logged 17 complaints but no injuries related to the problem, which will be repaired for free.

tC Release Series 3.0 on Display at The 2007 North American International Auto Show
01/05/2007 Torrance, CA

January 5, 2007 – Torrance, CA - Scion, of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., announced today that the tC Release Series 3.0 (tC R.S. 3.0) will be on display at the 2007 North American International Auto Show and hit dealer showrooms beginning in mid-February.

The 2007 tC Release Series 3.0 will come in a frosty Blizzard Pearl white and be decked out with a front and rear KenStyle® ground effects kit. Other tC R.S. 3.0 exterior features include darkened headlights, and a custom wide intake-style upper grille with a honeycomb insert that matches the lower grille. This package also has Scion Genuine Accessory clear LED taillights with unique gray trim.

The tC R.S. 3.0 has black Alcantara® seats detailed with a gray perforated center seating surface on a white background. Alcantara® is a suede-like material often found in luxury or performance vehicles and on aftermarket racing seats. A Blizzard Pearl RAZO® weighted shift knob with black leather insert is also standard.

A Pioneer six-inch subwoofer with 35-watt maximum power complements the standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer audio system and is tuned specifically for the tC. This compact subwoofer is mounted in the under-floor storage area, keeping it out of sight and leaving the cargo floor clear. This unique vehicle is completed by an individually numbered brushed stainless steel badge.

Only 2,500 units of the tC Release Series 3.0 will be built. The tC R.S. 3.0 model will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $2,580 over the base price. The base MSRP for the tC starts at $16,400 for the manual transmission model and $17,200 for the automatic transmission model.

The shine seems to have worn off the Scion brand - sales have been slipping lately.

This is nice update to the model.

The current models have been out for a while ... that could be it also.

On a side note, I saw a light blue tC doing 45 on the freeway and the brake lights were flashing every few seconds or so. It was some REALLY old guy hunched over the wheel -- I wonder if he was included in Scion's target demographic.

Have you seen a Scion lately? Thats what every Tc looks like minus a very simple front ground kit. The fact Toyota is up to a 3.0 version with no real performance to the car is pretty damn lame.

"Yes our goal is to taget younger buyers, those that grew up on the Honda name. What we do to target the Civic Si is add body kits to our Tc model which will easily draw buyers into the brand because we are at 17k with body kit and the Si is at 20k, oh sweet victory."

Post Scion to launch tC Release Series 4.0 at Chicago show

From Leftlanenews...

Scion has announced that it will launch its tC Release Series 4.0 model at next week's Chicago Auto Show. The new trim line will be based on the Scion tC, but will feature enhanced visuals both inside and out.

The RS 4.0 model will add a DAMD body kit and upper front grille, with a color-keyed rear spoiler optional. All RS 4.0 models will be painted in Galactic Gray Mica.

The interior of the RS 4.0 will sport gray and black Alcantara seats — with "tC RS 4.0" embroidered on the front and rear seats — a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a black leather and dark wood RAZO shift knob. The tC's interior will also wear special badging.

Only 2,300 examples of the tC RS 4.0 will be produce, with the package adding $2,770 to the price of a regular tC. The optional spoiler will add another $285 to the tC's $17,000 base price.

Not even.... IIRC Scion Series x.0 usually have a special paint color, like bright red or blue, and some interior details different from the base models. Aside from that.... pretty much the same.
