I like it, but the rear is a bit too Acura TL and just a tad overdone.

The U.S. gets the 18in over the 19in wheels that everyone else gets........ok.

Why only 2k examples?

And I like the wheel design, goes back to Saabs 3 spoke wheel days (nice historical touch with looking modern).

looks pretty sweet overall. I wonder what kind of numbers it will put up.

I wonder if the rear end will really have that much going on....
seems un-saab like

I don't like these clear taillights the manufacturers put on. I think the look cheezy.

yeah it looks like they tried too hard on the rear (tails). Wheels are terrible but the front is amazing!

I like the whole car. I don't think the rear is over done; it just has a nice bit a detailing. The front looks great, as do the wheels. The black out interior is also very cool.

It kind of does, but would clean up easy if they wanted......get rid of those ugly tail lights with the bisecting line going through them.

Add to that the bumper insert, red reflectors, chrome strip and you don't get the cleanest of back ends.

I think just by ditching the bisecting line in the tail lights would make it look better.

2009 Saab 9-3 Lineup To Get Haldex XWD

Date posted: 09-12-2008

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Haldex and Saab's co-developed XWD, or "cross-wheel-drive" system, is now available across most of the 9-3 lineup. The system is a fully automatic on-demand setup that was previously introduced on the 2008 Turbo-X sport sedan and the 9-3 Aero with V6 engine. For 2009, all 9.3 2.0T models except the convertible get the XWD system.

The all-wheel-drive system can send 100 percent of engine torque to the front or rear wheels whenever necessary. Saab XWD provides pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels for optimal traction on takeoff, Saab says. That capability is combined with an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential, or eLSD, that allows variable torque transfer between the rear wheels. The eLSD system is already standard on Aero models.

Another change for 2009 is the availability of an "Aero type" appearance and performance package for the 9-3 sport sedan. It includes a set of new 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, sport seats, dual tailpipes and upgraded brakes.

The 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi with XWD both will have a winter package, a moonroof, and an automatic transmission as standard, although a six-speed manual gearbox will be available.

Saab's 2009 pricing is up about 2 percent across the lineup, with the range extending from the 9-3 2.0T sport sedan priced at $29,610 to the 9-3 Aero V6T convertible at $50,385, including a $775 destination charge.

What this means to you: Saab extends XWD foul-weather capability to its 9-3 lineup.. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent

the front looks very good. tastefully done. Some clean up in the rear end would be nice though. It looks kinda busy.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-0...ab-s-cars.html

Saab Automobile and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG have agreed on a deal that allows the Swedish carmaker to use engines made by BMW, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

Saab will initially purchase BMW engines for the 9-3 model that is scheduled for release in late 2012, said the person, who asked not to be identified before a contract is signed. The carmakers plan to announce the pact in Trollhaettan, Sweden, on Sept. 29, before the Paris Motor Show, the person said.

Spyker Cars NV, which bought Saab from General Motors Co. in February, jumped as much as 39 percent, the most in eight months. The shares traded up 37 percent at 3.28 euros as of 12:50 a.m. in Amsterdam trading.

Spyker “confirms that talks are ongoing and will give further details once a final agreement has been reached,” the Dutch company said today in a statement.

Joe Oliver, a spokesman for Saab, declined to comment, as did BMW’s Frank Wienstroth.

The automakers are also in talks about Saab buying diesel engines from Munich-based BMW, as well as using BMW’s Mini Countryman platform for its smaller 9-2 model, the person said.

Wiessmann, Carbon Motors

BMW Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer has been looking for opportunities to sell components to other manufacturers to boost revenue. BMW, the world’s largest luxury- car maker, agreed in March to supply more than 240,000 six- cylinder diesel engines, cooling systems, and transmissions to Carbon Motors Corp., which is developing a police car for U.S. law enforcement agencies.

The German automaker also supplies engines to exotic car manufacturer Wiessmann GmbH.

The engine Saab will buy will be a new 222 horsepower motor that BMW is developing and has yet to put in any of its cars, said the person. While it will first be used in Saab’s new 9-3, the engine may be used in other models, including future versions of Saab’s flagship 9-5 sedan, the person said.

As part of the deal Saab will also tap into BMW’s Efficient Dynamics program, designed to reduce fuel consumption and increase motor and vehicle efficiency.

Saab’s upgraded 9-3 model will be the first one designed by Jason Castriota, the U.S. designer known for creating the Ferrari P4/5 and Maserati GranTurismo. Saab has said it aims to sell 60,000 to 70,000 of the new 9-3 annually, out of total sales of 120,000 cars, by 2012.

The smaller 9-2 model, which Saab aims to release by 2014, is inspired by the tear-drop shaped Saab 92 model that was in production between 1949 and 1956.

Wow, I wonder if (an unnamed) part of the deal includes a FWD Saab drivetrain for BMW?

Spyker could run out of cash tomorrow and Saab could be disolved by the time this ever happens. The sales volume trajectory for Saab does not bode well for their overall existance - tho I suppose an Obama style take over from the Swedish gov't is always possible. Even if they survive, their sales in the US will make them a small niche player with cars like the 9-3 priced way up in the 3 series territory.

Post 2014 Saab 9-3

Press release...

National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB has started production of the Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan with a petrol engine. Sales are initially focused in China with a small number of vehicles being sold directly from Nevs to Swedish customers via the Nevs' website.

The car that is produced is a high-spec Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan with a 220 hp 2.0-liter turbo, a previously recognized high-performance engine of the Saab cars.

"I am very proud of the dedication and the focus that Nevs management and employees have demonstrated over the year that has passed since we became owners of the plant in Trollhättan, and who have made this possible. Swedish expertise along with Japanese technology around batteries and new lightweight materials and our Chinese group's focus on green technology is our strength for the future", said Kai Johan Jiang, Nevs founder and main owner.

"It is truly a complex mission to start a car production process which has been still for two and a half years. It is very pleasing that we have embarked on a journey where we want to and will make a difference with our partners and customers. Our electric car will be launched next year, and already today we can offer Saab cars with continued high, proven performance and quality", said Nevs' President Mattias Bergman.

Nevs' customers will be offered a first class and engaging customer experience. They will also be offered the opportunity to come to the heart of the Saab car brand in Trollhättan to take delivery of their vehicles. While doing so, they will be invited to visit our highly efficient factory with experienced and competent workers and the Saab Car Museum where they can get a flavor of our brand and vehicles.

To ensure a solid ownership experience we intend to offer service and parts distribution in partnership with Orio AB (formerly known as Saab Automobile Parts AB).

In less than a year, the purchasing organization has built partnerships with the suppliers to the Saab 9-3. Nevs now has partnerships with all around 400 suppliers needed for the Sedan model. All in all the Nevs' start of production engage around 2,400 companies globally through the suppliers.

"It's been an intense year committed to ensuring Nevs' start of production. I see our established partnerships as a trustful beginning of the long term and strategic relationships we want to build together with our subcontractors", said Nevs' Purchasing Director Per Svantesson .

To ensure our high quality and the supply chain functions, the production rate will be very modest, about ten cars a week initially, and then gradually the pace will be increased to meet customers' demand.

The electric car based on the Saab 9-3 will be launched in spring 2014, with China as the first market. Nevs' partner and part owner Qingdao has initially placed an order for a pilot fleet of 200 electric cars with delivery starting in spring 2014.

Sales in Sweden, via Nevs' website, will start on Tuesday, December 10. The price is 279 000 SEK with manual transmission and 289 000 with automatic transmission. Additional specifications purchase and delivery conditions are presented when the sale starts.

Over time we will develop our customer base to expand into more markets where we see potential for growth and profitability.

Nevs' vision is to shape mobility for a more sustainable future. Our aim is to be a front runner in the automotive industry, with focus on electric vehicles, where China is our initial main market. The pace of change towards cars powered by fossil free fuels will increase and China currently has the most ambitious efforts for electrification of the vehicle fleet.
