Roll me a new lane...
Incredibly, scientists have invented a highway that can be unrolled from the back of a lorry like carpet and folded up again when no longer needed. It could speed up the building of new roads and allow temporary lanes to be created quickly while old surfaces are being repaired.
The road-on-a-roll can be wrapped on to giant reels because the asphalt and stones that it consists of are held together by special plastic fibres. The surface is laid out and then 'ironed' on to the ground using a giant microwave machine. When the time comes to remove it, the same machine heats it up again, so it can be rolled back up.
John Stubbs, AA technology expert, explained: "The road surface quality can be consistently good because it's made in a factory and it could be laid in any weather, so speeding up the job." The surface has been tested on a busy motorway in Holland for the past 12 months and is now undergoing trials to see if HGVs damage it.

It's not just the bad condition of the roads and bridges, but as you said, the fact that it takes FOR EVER to do ANYTHING on any road to any extend. All I see is lane blockers and separators and rarely see people working. And when I see people working, it's always a very few people compared to the size of the project. WTF!!! ?
