Might be about perfect for you then, give them some time to get the launch edition bugs worked out & get the more refined version when your lease is up

It's like half the size and half the cost of the R1S. Apparently the interiors have been made less expensive too but only in places you can't see/touch.

I've got 2.5 years left on mine

I was hoping to hear more about the R3X - and hopefully be able to switch my reservation to it - by now. I think that's still looking like a 2027 model at this point though.

I've been seeing a lot more Rivians on the road near me lately too.

Either way, I'm definitely interested in seeing more details on these.

R1 T/S are common enough around here that they don't attract the 'look at that' attention they initially did.
Still far outnumbered by Tesla, but seeing a lot more Rivian & even Lucid around here. With a scattering of H/K, Prologue & GM options. MachE somewhere in between

I don't think you're going to see the R3X until 2028 or 2029. The factory in GA needs to be up and running before they can even make those and that site is basically nothing more than a hole in the ground right now.

@Sarlacc 1 year left on lease is about where you'd be to get one anyway.

Rivian reveals pricing and trim details for its R2 SUV

Mar 12, 2026

Between the antics particular to a certain car company and the industrial chaos that was set off by COVID (then compounded by the invasion of Ukraine) it’s easy to have become cynical about things like timelines. And yet, when Rivian showed off a midsize electric vehicle in 2024 and said it would go on sale during the first half of 2026, it meant it: deliveries of the first R2 SUVs will begin this spring.

As a new automaker Rivian often does things its own way, but with the R2 launch it’s following industry practice and starting with the more superlative version first. That’s the R2 Performance, which starts at $57,990 with the launch package (but not including a $1,495 delivery charge). You get quite a lot of electric SUV for that, however: up to 330 miles (531 km) from a single charge of the 87.9 kWh battery pack, with 656 hp (489 kW) and 609 lb-ft (825 Nm) from the dual motor powertrain. Fast charging takes 29 minutes from 10-80 percent.

The Performance features semi-active suspension, a rear window that drops into the tailgate, an interior with birch accents, heating for the front and rear seats with ventilation for the former as well, a nine-speaker sound system, matrix LED headlights, and some other neat touches like the flashlight that lives in the side of the door, similar to the way some cars hide an umbrella there.

You can add Autonomy+ (the automaker’s partially automated driver assist), the tow package (4,400 lbs/1,995 kg), and some other colors as optional extras to the Performance trim; they’re silver by default. The launch package includes a lifetime subscription to Autonomy+ as well as the tow package, plus another optional body color.

In late 2026 the R2 Premium goes on sale at $53,990. This has the same 330-mile range and the same 87.9 kWh battery pack, but generates only 450 hp (355 kW) and 537 lb-ft (728 Nm) from its dual-motor powertrain. The R2 Premium does without the semi-active suspension, arrives on 20-inch instead of 21-inch wheels, and features fewer drive modes, doing without rally, soft sand, and launch modes, but otherwise shares its specs with the faster, more expensive R2 Performance.

Single motor in 2027

The single-motor R2's arrive next year, with the $48,490 R2 Standard that uses the same 87.9 kWh battery pack as the AWD R2's. Without a motor for the front axle, the RWD R2 goes a little further: 345 miles (555 km) on a single charge. The motor sends 350 hp ( kW) and 355 lb-ft to the rear axle. Standard R2's come with an all-black interior, and only heat the front seats. The sound system has five speakers instead of nine, there’s no all-terrain drive mode, it rides on 19-inch wheels, and the glass in the rear window doesn’t drop down, so you’ll want a roof rack for your surfboard.

In late 2027, an R2 Standard with a smaller battery enabling around 265 miles (426 km) goes on sale for $45,000. For now, we don’t know much about that one other than its price.

The R2 SUV is an attractive thing, sharing a lot of its looks with the larger three-row R1S, both inside and out. And a rather clever one, too; Volkswagen Group invested $5 billion in Rivian specifically to gain access to its software-defined vehicle technology and expertise.

An AI assistant will come to Rivian’s in-house infotainment system in a future update, an assistant that runs locally via the magic of edge computing. (OK, it actually said “R2 is outfitted with 200 sparse TOPS of edge AI compute dedicated to the in-cabin experience,” but I really don’t like how compute is becoming a noun.) That processing power will also enable Rivian’s Autonomy+. And since this is now Rivian’s fourth product, we can be confident in its ability to deliver the regularly praised cadence of software updates.

MARCH 12, 2026

IRVINE, Calif., March 12, 2026 — Today, American automaker and technology company Rivian announced full trims and pricing¹ for the all-new R2, a mid-size electric SUV that brings Rivian’s design, performance and technology to a significantly broader audience without losing what makes a Rivian unmistakably Rivian.

Tailored to Your Adventure: New Colors, Interiors and Wheels

Rivian is introducing three new exterior colors, expanding Rivian’s palette while reinforcing the vehicle’s expressive, adventurous character.
  • Catalina Cove: Exclusive to R2, like the waters that surround Catalina Island, this metallic paint shifts from deep Pacific blues to translucent greens in the light.
  • Esker Silver: Inspired by the winding ridges of gravel and sand that glaciers leave behind, fine metallic flakes bring depth to this shimmering silver.
  • Half Moon Grey: This metallic grey is inspired by the coastal cliffs of Half Moon Bay — layers of granite and sandstone shifting in warm light.
These join Rivian’s established exterior colors, including Midnight, Glacier White, Forest Green, Borealis and Launch Green (available for a limited time with Launch Package), creating a lineup that reflects the environments R2 was designed to move through and explore.

Drivers can customize their vehicle’s stance and aesthetic to match their lifestyle. All R2 wheel and tire options share a 32-inch overall diameter (OD), with configurations across the lineup including:
  • 19” Machined Graphite All-Season: Aluminum wheels with a bright machined finish and graphite metallic pockets. With Pirelli all-season tires for versatile performance in all kinds of conditions.
  • 20” Bicolor Carbon All-Season: Aluminum wheels with satin machined details and satin carbon pockets are paired with Pirelli all-season tires for a blend of range and performance.
  • 20” Black Sand All-Terrain: Forged aluminum machined face wheels with dark satin tint and black pockets. Paired with versatile BF Goodrich all-terrain tires for confident handling, on-road and off.
  • 21” Liquid Tungsten All-Season: Forged aluminum machined face wheels finished with liquid tungsten tint and dark pockets. With Pirelli all-season tires, this combo is best for maximizing range and on-road performance.
Inside, R2 reflects thoughtful utility with nature-inspired minimalism, expressed through distinct interior environments tailored to each trim. Carefully selected materials and clean architectural lines create a space that feels warm, modern and purposeful.

R2 Performance and Premium trims feature two signature interiors defined by a tactile blend of Birch wood accents and organic textures.
  • Black Crater Signature — Inspired by the dynamic dark tones of volcanic rock, this interior is crafted with upcycled Birch wood and textile accents. This creates an inviting, dark tonal environment that seamlessly blends rugged durability with a refined, minimalist aesthetic.
  • Coastal Cloud Signature — Open and airy, the crisp tones of cool and cloudy coastal sky are warmed with upcycled Birch wood and soft textile accents. This palette offers a modern aesthetic that is grounded in Rivian’s nature-inspired design language.
For Standard trim:
  • Black Crater — Featuring dark volcanic tones, a light and airy headliner and natural fiber accents, for an interior that feels both expansive and welcoming.
Utility, Reimagined

The interior maximizes every square inch, delivering premium views and a comfortable experience for up to five adults with zero bad seats in the cabin.
  • Open-Air Freedom: A hallmark of the R2 design is the rear drop glass window that lowers completely into the liftgate. With the touch of a button, drivers can drop all windows to allow for flow-through breezes or easily haul long gear like surfboards (included only on Performance and Premium trims).
  • Smart Storage: With 90.1 cubic feet of total enclosed storage, R2 easily adapts to your gear. The class-leading front trunk with 5.2 cu ft of space fits a carry-on and large backpack, dual glove boxes provide maximum organization, and the fold-flat rear seats create a level loading surface for bikes and camping gear.
Agility Meets Class-Leading Capability

At nearly 2,000 lbs lighter than the R1 and sitting on a shorter wheelbase (115.6 in), R2 is incredibly responsive and maneuverable in urban environments. Despite its nimbleness, it retains Rivian’s off-road DNA:
  • Best-in-Class Stance: Features 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25° approach angle, and a 26° departure angle.
  • Dynamic Drive Experience: R2 achieves a planted, connected-to-the-road feel through a low center of gravity enabled by its structural battery pack. This foundation is enhanced by a semi-active suspension (unique to Performance trim) that delivers superior handling and precision across both on- and off-road terrain.
Transformational Technology

R2 marks the evolution of the software-defined vehicle: an AI-ready architecture that pairs 5G-connected, offline-capable processing with tactile, haptic hardware. Built on a multi-modal perception stack—featuring 11 HDR cameras with a combined 65MP and a sophisticated five-radar system—the R2 delivers a leap in hardware fidelity. This foundation powers an expanding suite of driver assistance and active safety features designed for a drive that feels as advanced as it operates.
  • Designed for the Road Ahead: Rivian Autonomy+⁷ ($49.99/month or $2,500/one-time) hardware is built into all R2 trims and service is optional across the lineup (lifetime access to Autonomy+ included⁵ with Launch Package), bringing L2+ hands-free assisted driving to 3.5 million miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada with Universal Hands-Free⁶. Every Rivian comes standard with a system that continuously evolves with each software update, getting smarter right from your driveway, and foundational active safety and driver assistance features. All new R2 deliveries include a 60-day trial of Autonomy+.
  • AI Powerhouse: R2 is outfitted with 200 sparse TOPS of edge AI compute dedicated to the in-cabin experience. This includes enabling the forthcoming Rivian Assistant—Rivian’s in-vehicle voice assistant that understands you, your vehicle and your context—to smoothly run complex tasks locally on the edge, even if the vehicle is offline.
  • Haptic Halo Wheels: At the center of the R2 driving experience is a redesigned steering wheel featuring haptic 'halo' dials. These dynamic and context-aware controls—capable of scrolling, pushing, pulling and tilting—provide distinct physical responses for multiple functions, bridging the gap between digital software and tactile hardware to keep the driver’s focus on the horizon. Both the physical wheels and underlying haptic technology were designed in-house.
  • Dual Digital Displays: R2 offers flexibility and control with two displays—a driver display in front of the steering wheel for more utility on the road, and the center display for a deeper dive into features.
  • Software Updates: Rivian builds vertically-integrated hardware and software, enabling your vehicle to gain meaningful updates via software right from your driveway. R2 evolves this vertically integrated approach with a new, streamlined electrical architecture that delivers more capability with less complexity, providing ample headroom for the future.
Coming this Spring

R2 deliveries begin Spring 2026 with Performance trim with Launch Package. Premium configurations follow in late 2026 and Standard configurations follow through 2027. Reservations are open now with a $100 refundable deposit.

The R2 lineup will be on display to the public at SXSW® 2026 from March 13-18, 2026 at the Rivian Roadhouse. R2 online configurator will open in the coming months. To learn more and reserve R2 visit: rivian.com/r2.

RIP to the Model Y.

Some analysts are predicting 250-300k units per year in production demand for this thing.

It's competitively priced for what you get. I got my email saying I should be able to finalize the order in June and I'm strongly considering it. But I would still love to hear about the R3X sooner than later.

Also, dat purp:

I doubt you hear/see much about the R3X between now and the middle/end of next year. They're not going to say anything about it during the R2 launch as they want all eyes on this thing.

Purple is definitely the one to get though! Don't get the AT tires, get the sport/road ones lol.

I put a deposit down as soon as they opened. Nothing yet. But that’s probably for the best. I can’t fucking afford it right now. Trade or sale on my Y is probably worthless at this point.

Just wait unless you want the performance launch edition one. Honestly the best one to get right now is the AWD long range model that comes out later this year for low 50's or the RWD long range for high 40's. The Performance Launch edition isn't worth it (IMO) knowing that the tri motor is coming eventually unless you have need for being super early on this one.

I put a deposit down the day it was announced - you haven't received anything at all? Do you see anything when you log into your Rivian account?

Odd, I did have updates there waiting for me. Wonder why I’m not getting emails.

Uber to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian as part of robotaxi deal

March 19, 2026

Uber will invest up to $1.25 billion in electric vehicle maker Rivian as part of a deal in which the ride-hailing firm will start deploying 10,000 fully autonomous R2 SUVs as robotaxis from 2028, the companies said on Thursday.

San Francisco-based Uber will make an initial investment of $300 million, and will fund the remaining amount through 2031, subject to Rivian meeting certain autonomous milestones, the companies said.

While Rivian, known for its high-end R1S SUVs and R1T pickup trucks, has not launched a robotaxi yet, it unveiled its first custom computer chip for self-driving in December. The company is also gearing up to roll out its smaller, more affordable R2 SUVs this quarter.

R2 robotaxis will be available exclusively on Uber's platform, starting with San Francisco and Miami
, the companies said, adding that Uber has the option to buy up to 40,000 more beginning in 2030.

"Should all milestones be achieved, the companies will have deployed thousands of unsupervised Rivian R2 robotaxis across 25 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe by the end of 2031," they said.

Uber is positioning itself as a marketplace for multiple robotaxi operators, and has partnered across much of the autonomous vehicle industry, including with Waymo, Baidu and Lucid.

It is also working with Nvidia on autonomous driving, leveraging the chip designer's AI and simulation platforms to support the development and scaling of robotaxi systems.

It's interesting that no one is pouring this money into Tesla lol. I think Uber also put a bunch of cash into Lucid as well?

Uber inks six-year robotaxi deal with Lucid, invests $300 million in EV company

Jul 17 2025

Key Points

- Uber on Thursday announced a $300 million partnership to deploy more than 20,000 robotaxis over the next six years as demand for driverless cars kicks into high gear.
- The ride-hailing company will invest $300 million in Lucid. Nuro will build the self-driving technology that will be used by Lucid to supply Uber at least 20,000 robotaxis over the course of the deal.
- The companies plan to launch the robotaxis in a major U.S. urban hub next year.

Honestly it kinda turns me off from the R2. They need the money, so I'm not poo-pooing the deal, but that's a lot of R2 Ubers and I've already owned a ride share car

R2 Premium or Integra Type S.

For my use I don’t think I need an SUV/CUV. Would be nice for the rare occasion. Like once every other year.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you want a nice daily to complement your Poorsche then I'd get the R2. If you want a fun toy car then get a used BMW M3 (lol).

In all seriousness, the R2 will be fantastic as a nice daily. Even if you don't need all the cargo space, the advantage of all the interior features, quality, tech, passenger space, AWD, and lack of using that expensive CA gas would be worth it. Not to mention it can drive itself while you sit in CA traffic jams and you don't have any maintenance costs at all. Also it's not an Acura.

Do you still have the TL? If yes what are you getting from the ITS that you don't have today? If nothing just run what you brung and call it good.

If I were dead-set on an Acura, it'd likely be an ITS.
But then, I'd probably just get a CTR for a bit less $$ instead and save $5k.

Still have the 3G TL. I've had it since I got it new 9/9/07. Would like something newer. Apple Carplay. Manual.

Only considering the ITS over the CTR for the extra creature comforts. And that its possible I hear to get the ITS under MSRP.

Well considering the R2 doesn't come with CarPlay (though it is 100% unnecessary with Rivian UI) or a manual I'd say that kind of answers it for you...
