I know that porsche is just trying to expand its base, but in the proces IMO it is ruining it's reputation. Porsche's legacy will no longer be as an exclusive sports car builder. Now any rich soccer mom can say she owns a porsche just cause some ugly ass SUV has a porsche badge on it. When somebody used to say they owned a porsche it meant something, now it means I own a modded Toureg.

I have no idea if that pic I posted is the real deal. It does look plausible, though.
And BTW notice the location of the door handles on this pic vs. those from the one posted by Gavril. The more I look at the side profile, the more it looks like someone easily took a Lexus GS and photoshopped their little head off.

Panamera a Go-Go: Porsche to build four-door sports car; vehicle to bow in '09 - - Source: Autoweek
As we reported several months ago (AW, March 21), Porsche's flirtation with a four-door sports car has become a reality.
The automaker today officially announced it has approved the development and production of the long-rumored fourth Porsche model line. The vehicle, called Panamera, will have four seats, four doors, rear drive and a choice of front-mounted engines.
Power for the new car is set to come from the same 4.5-liter V8 engines as those offered on the Cayenne. They include a naturally aspirated version with 340 hp and a turbocharged unit with 450 hp. An even more powerful model with more than 500 hp is also in the pipeline. Scheduled to enter the market in 2009, the new car’s name is derived from the legendary Carrera Panamericana long-distance race.
Up to 20,000 examples of the Panamera are expected to roll annually from Porsche’s Leipzig factory in Germany, where it will be produced alongside the Cayenne. A concept version of the vehicle is expected to bow at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

"The Panamera is a perfect fit for Porsche,” said Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, the President and CEO of Porsche AG. “It has all the typical DNA characteristic of a genuine sports car. In terms of performance, design, and driving dynamics, it meets Porsche's high standards in every respect. Through this sports coupe we are making our customers a highly attractive offer in the top performance segment."
Porsche will develop and build the Panamera using the company's own resources. "We will be developing a separate platform for our fourth model line at our Weissach R&D center,” said Wiedeking. “There are no plans for a joint venture with another car maker, but to ensure the profitability of this new model line we will cooperate more closely than so far with selected system suppliers."
Production of the Panamera in Leipzig could create as many as 600 new jobs. In the course of the project, approximately 400 more new jobs will be created at Porsche's original plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the engines for the fourth model line will be built, and at the Weissach Development Center.

I dont know about this. As with the Cayenne, i didnt think Porsche should have ventured outside the sports car market but now, the Cayenne is my favorite SUV. Hopefully the Panamera will do the same, but i hope it looks nothing like those pictures up there

Porsche Will Build Fourth Model Line: Porsche Panamera
Source: RSportscars.com
The Supervisory Board and the Board of Management of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave their approval today for the development and production of another Porsche model line. To be called Panamera, the new car will be a premium-class sports coupe with four seats, four doors, and a choice of front-mounted engines driving the rear wheels.
Scheduled to enter the market in 2009, the Panamera will be the fourth model line from the Stuttgart carmaker following the 911, the Boxster and the Cayenne. The new car’s name is derived from the legendary Carrera Panamericana long-distance race.
Production of the Panamera is to be in Leipzig, where Porsche already builds the Cayenne SUV and the Carrera GT supercar. The final decision will require further detailed talks between the Board of Management of Porsche AG and the Management of Porsche Leipzig GmbH with representatives of the employees. Porsche's total investment in the new model line, including development, will be more than 1 billion euros (approx. $1,200,000) and will come entirely from the company’s own funds. Expected sales are at least 20,000 units a year.

Production of the Panamera in Leipzig would potentially create some 600 new jobs there. In the course of the project, approximately 400 more new jobs will be created at Porsche's original plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the engines for the fourth model line will be built, and at the Weissach Development Center.
Like the 911, the Boxster and the Cayenne, the Panamera will bear the "Made in Germany" stamp of quality. Domestic share of the Panamera’s overall assembled value will be approximately 70 percent.

Anyone know how the Cayenne is doing anyway? I have yet to see one on the road.

Sure if you ignore porsche's history...
Some recent examples that fall into this same category but happened ~30 years ago.
914
924
937 (not many made, but WTF were they thinking)
Not much cutting edge about them.... They were cheaper "affordabl"e porsches. Not to mention a LOT of the parts come from Audi.

I think Lexus was aiming for that same curvaceous look with the new GS, but somehow the Porsche designers beat them at the task.

First Porsche Panamera Spy Photos
Here now are photos showing for the first time a test mule of Porsche’s all-new and first four-door Porsche Panamera. Since the engineers cleverly used an almost standard Cayenne for testing at Nurburgring, the difference in this prototype can be seen in all four fenders which are considerably wider - could be overlooked at a first glance.
eww, dont know the credibility of this pic, looks like a toy...

Porsche AG will invest $153 million (or about 120 million euros at current exchange rates) in its Leipzig, Germany, factory to build the four-door Panamera sedan. The sedan is scheduled to go on sale in the United States in 2009.
Porsche also said Volkswagen AG will supply the body for the Panamera from its factory in Hannover, Germany. VW already produces the body-in-white for the Porsche Cayenne, the sister SUV to its Touareg. The Cayenne is assembled in Leipzig. The Panamera's engine will be built in Porsche's main factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Germany.
Porsche approved production of the sedan as its fourth nameplate last July. It said that it expects to produce 20,000 Panameras a year and that about 40 percent will go the United States. Porsche is investing $1.2 billion to develop the Panamera.
