Volkswagen: ID.7 News

Revealed in June 2022 in China rather than Germany, the ID. Aero design study previews the ID.7 electric sedan, which premiered in camouflaged form at the Consumer Electronics Show. The zero-emission sedan will be available on three continents as per the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer.

The Las Vegas-bound prototype is rocking a unique paintwork, designed to light up the ID.7 interactively. 40 layers of paint have been applied, of which a handful are conductive whereas the other have insulating properties. No fewer than 22 areas of the all-electric vehicle are electrified below the top layer of paint. When connected to a sound system, the rhythm is visualized by individually illuminated areas of the prototype.

Typical of Volkswagen, the gimmicks don’t stop here. QR codes on the hood, rear passenger windows, and rear window are featured as well. That said, is there anything to look forward to from this EV?

To put it bluntly, yessir! Volkswagen claims around 700 kilometers of driving range for European versions on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure, which converts to 435 miles. Given that the Environmental Protection Agency has better testing procedures than the European Union, expect the U.S.-spec ID.7 to be rated slightly worse.

The fine print of the attached press release states that we’re dealing with a simulated WLTP cycle on a rolling road. The CES 2023 prototype is also referred to as a near-production spec. As implied by the headline, the full reveal is scheduled for the second quarter of 2023, meaning that U.S. customers will get the new ID.7 no sooner than the 2024 model year.

The first sedan based on the MEB modular electric drive matrix also marks the German automaker’s return to the Consumer Electronics Show after a six-year hiatus. Volkswagen claims that it designed the ID.7 with customer feedback in mind. The feedback is credited with the new display concept, augmented reality head-up display, a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digitally controlled air vents, and illuminated touch sliders.

The latter two are most likely the German automaker’s ideas rather than Volkswagen paying attention to ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5 customers because nobody in their right mind prefers digitally controlled air vents and illuminated touch sliders over physical controls. Not only do these things add unnecessary complexity to an already complex vehicle, but physical air vents and switchgear are superior to their digital counterparts due to something called muscle memory. Taking your eyes off the road to adjust an air vent or the climate control can only be described as dangerous.

There are, however, some upsides that need to be highlighted. For example, when the driver is approaching the vehicle with the key in their pocket, the ID.7 can turn on the climate control on its own to cool down or heat up the interior before entering the vehicle. So-called Smart Air Vents move dynamically to distribute the air over large areas as quickly as possible. What’s more, the ID.7 all-electric sedan can direct the air straight to the driver’s body. Indirect ventilation is also possible.

Volkswagen expects the ID.7 to expand its ID. series of electric vehicles into the premium spectrum of the mass-market segment. Including the China-exclusive ID.6 and the ID. Buzz, the ID. series will number six nameplates with the full introduction of the ID.7 in the second quarter of 2023. In the first instance, the ID.7 will be produced at the Emden plant in Germany where the ID.4 compact-sized crossover is also assembled.

Volkswagen hasn’t yet confirmed where it’s going to make the ID.7 for North America and China, but on the upside, Volkswagen did confirm both markets. Gifted with a 116.9-inch (2,969-millimeter) wheelbase, the newcomer may be made in Anting or Foshan for the Chinese market, while U.S. production may take place at the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee.

Volkswagen’s ID family of electric vehicles will soon grow to include a sedan for the first time ever, which will be christened the ID.7. Previously known as the Aero B, or the electric Passat, it was recently scooped in motion during winter testing in Northern Europe, with a limited amount of camouflage.
21 photos

The latest spy shots taken by our vigilant man with the cam reveal more skin compared to the prototype displayed at CES 2023, in Las Vegas, as while that one had a special wrap that sent trippy vibes, the vinyl stickers on this one are rather discreet, and they only partially hide the front and rear ends.

Don’t mind the faux grille with horizontal slats, because the real thing will be closed off, and have a different design. The same goes for the aero bits in the front bumper, which are also fake, and the headlamps, as their surrounds were also partially hidden beneath the camouflage.

The prototype has semi-flush door handles, fake tailpipe trim in the rear diffuser, and more stickers on the taillights that kind of seem to have been inspired by Audi’s. The license plate holder sits on the trunk lid, and we can see a discreet spoiler on the upper end of the rear windscreen. It is also worth noting that the wheels of the scooped tester are different than the ones of the prototype previewed at CES.

Although only partially visible in these spy shots, the interior has already opened up to the camera during the Las Vegas event, revealing a large tablet-like infotainment system in the middle of the dashboard, next to the three-spoke steering wheel with many buttons on it, and a rather small digital instrument cluster. The car will feature illuminated touch sliders and digitally-controlled air vents, gimmicks that will replace the traditional physical controls. An augmented reality head-up display will also be on deck.

Underpinned by an updated version of the MEB+ architecture, which is the foundation stone of the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, and ID. Buzz, as well as the Skoda Enyaq iV, Cupra Born, and Audi Q4 e-tron and Q5 e-tron in the non-plus configuration, the Volkswagen ID.7 will have 116.9 inches (2,969 mm) between the axles. This will open up more legroom for those sitting at the back, with the space being comparable to the Audi A6, whose wheelbase measures 115.1 inches (2,924 mm) when it comes to the latest generation, and 119.1 inches (3,024 mm) in the long wheelbase configuration.

Volkswagen also promises a zero-emission driving range of up to 435 miles (700 km) on the WLTP cycle in the most frugal variant of the car. The unveiling date of the ID.7 is still unknown, but it is expected to be due in the second quarter of the year, and will launch in North America, Europe, and China.

Sedans aren't dead yet. Volkswagen will launch a new all-electric model later this year called the ID.7. Previewed in July 2022 by the ID. Aero concept, the ID.7 will offer a spacious interior with long-range capability, ultimately serving as the company's flagship model in its electric ID series.

VW made a big splash at the CES 2023 by officially revealing its name, along with a fantastically painted prototype and an approximate debut window of sometime in Q2 2023. Fortunately, we have some information about this new sedan we can discuss right now.

We also have exclusive renderings of the exterior that showcase its final design. So without further adieu, here's a preview of what you can expect from the 2024 VW ID.7.

What Will It Look like?

The good news is, that's a question we can (mostly) answer right now. We mentioned last year's ID. Aero concept offering a near-production preview. Additionally, VW unveiled a "camouflaged" ID.7 at CES that wore a 40-layer electroluminescent paint job in a digital camo pattern, designed to trick the eyes. But it allowed us to create exclusive exterior renderings that swap the wild paint for something more conventional. There might be small variations in details on the production version, but when VW makes the ID.7 official, it should come close to the images seen here.

One aspect not fully appreciated in the images is just how big the ID.7 is. This isn't a compact EV – its wheelbase is 116.9 inches and front-to-back, making it slightly larger than the Arteon. Inside, that means a spacious interior featuring a slim digital driver display with a large 15.0-inch center touchscreen. VW hasn't shared specifics such as legroom or cargo space, but in prototype form, the interior has generous footwells for front-seat passengers. Tactile controls are found on the steering wheel, dash, and on a strip below the touchscreen.

What's Under The Hood?

In this case, under the hood also refers to the ID.7's MEB platform. It's the same platform used by other VW EVs, which likely means single-motor and dual-motor options will be offered. The automaker isn't ready to talk about motor details just yet, but we know the ID.4 crossover gives buyers a choice of motors for driving two wheels or all four.

What Is The Range?

Although there's no official estimate on horsepower at this time, VW does offer a range estimate. The ID.7 will reportedly be able to drive up to 435 miles (700 kilometers) on a single charge in the European WLTP cycle. EPA estimates for the US market will almost certainly be lower.

How Much Will It Cost?

The ID.7 will be a global vehicle, and the price will certainly vary by region. The automaker hasn't announced pricing for any region at this time, or even offered estimates. But with its size comparable to the Arteon, a base model starting in the high $30,000 range isn't out of the question.

The ID. family of all-electric vehicles will grow larger on April 17 with the unveiling of the ID.7 sedan. Pretty much a replacement for the internal combustion-engined Passat sedan, the newcomer will debut a highly efficient drive unit baptized APP550. Given time, said electric motor will carry over to the remainder of the ID. series.

Leaked in all its glory in China, the ID.7 is reassuringly bland. Not weird like the 911-esque Hyundai Ioniq 6, nor desirable like the Tesla Model 3, but simply bland. The white-painted body shell and black accents add to the blandness, together with the generic wheels.

Baptized ID.7 Vizzion in China, after the namesake concept from the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the series-production car was leaked by the Ministry of Information and Technology. Both exterior design and specs, that is. The Chinese regulator lists an overall length of 4,956 millimeters, an overall width of 1,862 millimeters, and a height of 1,537 millimeters, which makes the ID.7 larger in every respect than the Euro-spec Passat sedan that will be canned very soon.

Curb weight is 2,122 kilograms (4,678 pounds), tire dimensions are 235/55 R18 and 235/50 R19, and the wheelbase measures 2,965 millimeters, compared to 2,786 millimeters for the aforementioned Passat. The ID.7 features NMC battery cells manufactured by CATL-FAW Power Battery Co., Ltd. The drive unit has a continuous output of 70 kW and a peak output of 150 kW. That's 94 and 201 horsepower despite the APP550 developing up to 210 kW (282 horsepower) and 550 Nm (406 pound-feet) of torque, according to Volkswagen.

China will initially get a 77-kWh battery pack. The Wolfsburg-based automaker has already confirmed a long-range option with 86 kilowatt hours on tap. The latter battery is good for a rather impressive 700 kilometers (435 miles) of range under the WLTP, a testing standard that is more optimistic than the EPA's way of doing estimating fuel consumption and range.

The final piece of information revealed by the Chinese regulator is top speed, namely 155 kilometers per hour (96 miles per hour). Despite the somewhat unexciting exterior styling, the numbers are pretty good on paper. But the big question is will the price be right as well?

The ongoing EV price war saw mainstream automakers like Tesla and Chinese automakers like BYD mark down their prices due to a plethora of reasons. Manufacturing costs are steadily declining, standardization is driving economies of scale, lithium prices are falling, and competition is higher than ever before. Tesla was virtually unchallenged in the past, but as legacy automakers roll out increasingly more electric vehicle models, the pressure is on for everyone, not just Tesla.

Volkswagen confirmed that ID.7 production would begin in the second half of 2023 in Germany at the Emden plant. The US market will receive the ID.7 in 2024, most likely as a 2024 model. Regardless of market, the ID.7 employs MacPherson strut-type suspension up front and a five-link rear arrangement.

The Volkswagen ID.7 debuts as the brand's new flagship electric sedan. It arrives in Europe and China this fall and comes to North America in 2024.

The ID.7 is available in two trims: Pro and Pro S. Both have an electric motor making 282 horsepower (210 kilowatts). The Pro comes with a battery that has an 82-kilowatt-hour gross rating (77-kWh net) that provides an estimated WLTP-cycle range of 382 miles (615 kilometers). The system supports 170-kW DC charging.

The Pro S gets a pack with a 91-kWh gross capacity (86-kWh net) that offers an estimated 435 miles (700 km) of driving distance. The DC charging capacity is 200 kW.The ID.7 is 195.3 inches (4,961 millimeters) long and has a 116.8-inch (2,966-mm) wheelbase. These figures are comparable to a Mercedes-Benz EQE electric sedan that is 196.9 inches long with a 122.8-inch wheelbase. Without counting the exterior mirrors, the VW is 73.31 inches (1,862 mm) wide. The body's drag coefficient is as low as 0.23, depending on the equipment a buyer chooses.

Inside, the ID.7 comes standard with an augmented reality head-up display. The technology lets the designers fit a simplified instrument cluster that only shows the legally necessary info like the vehicle speed and various warnings.

The augmented reality system makes information appear to be different distances away from the driver. For example, the speed appears to be close, but the turn arrows seem to be farther away. The info on display can include things like road lane markings, distance info, and speed limit. Controls on the steering wheel allow for adjusting the info on the HUD to what the driver wants to see.
A 15-inch infotainment system is on the center of the dashboard. Illuminated touch sliders allow for adjusting the cabin temperature and audio volume.

The Travel Assist system includes adaptive cruise control and assisted lane changing. The tech is able to detect speed limits and automatically adjust the vehicle's velocity.

VW touts that the ID.7 has the most advanced air-conditioning system from the brand since the Phaeton. The vents have motors to move them vertically and horizontally so that the system can distribute air over a large area of the cabin. It also responds to voice commands. For example, the driver saying "Hello IDA, my hands are cold," directs a warm gust at the person's fingers and activates the steering wheel heater.

Buyers can specify high-tech seats. The front chairs are available with up to 14-way power adjustment. A Climatronic function uses temperature and moisture sensors to heat or cool them automatically. A massaging system has 10 air cushions, and a premium version adds two more cushions for working on the occupant's pelvis and spine.

An optional panoramic sunroof has a smart glass panel. A polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer allows it to switch between opaque or transparent either via a button or the voice controls.

VW will build the ID.7 for the European and North American markets at its Emden plant in Germany. Production will begin in the second half of the year. No pricing details are available for any region.

They need to turn this into a SUV and it'll be a hit all over. Also 400+ miles of range is awesome, time for some of the people who have been bitching about this arbitrary magic number before they get in to put their money where their mouth is.

Much like the Volkswagen ID. Vizzion concept from 2018 morphed into the ID.7 electric sedan, we are happy to report the same will happen with the 2019 ID. Space Vizzion. Spies stumbled upon a prototype of the electric wagon near Kiel in Germany where the VW Group was testing a bunch of models belonging to several of its many brands. It already has the full production body, which leads us to believe the world premiere could take place in 2024.

As was the case with the ID.7 sedan prototypes, its long-roof sibling is wearing sneaky camouflage trying to mimic a combustion-engined car. The confusing disguise wants us to believe we're dealing with a Passat Variant but we know better. The front grille, lower air intake, and exhaust tips are obviously fake, and there's some clever body-colored camo. In addition, the headlights and taillights remain hidden under stickers in an attempt to throw us off.

Mechanically, it should be a spitting image of the sedan, so expect the initial model to have a rear-wheel-drive setup with a single motor making 282 horsepower (210 kilowatts). Both body styles are expected to spawn a more potent dual-motor version with all-wheel drive and nearly 400 horsepower. As for the battery, you can get the ID.7 with 77- and 86-kWh packages and charge them at up to 200 kW.

Probably not, sadly. It's a nice looking wagon. Much less EV looking than most, IMO.

Coming to European dealerships this fall, the ID.7 is Volkswagen's idea of a zero-emission sedan. A five-door liftback that indirectly replaces the internal combustion-engined Passat sedan in the European Union and United Kingdom, the newest member of the ID. family has entered series production at the Emden assembly plant in Deutschland.
46 photos

First and foremost, the answer is yes; the Passat isn't going away anytime soon. The B9 generation is due in 2024 as an evolution of the outgoing B8. To be offered exclusively as a station wagon, the B9 is joined at the hip with Skoda's next-generation Superb. But as opposed to the Passat, the Czech sibling will come both as a five-door liftback and station wagon.

Turning our attention back to the ID.7, the German automaker claims that it's one of 10 new electric models to be launched through 2026. The Wolfsburg-based manufacturer also claims that Emden supplies both the EU and UK, as well as North America.

One has to ask why the ID.7 isn't made in Chattanooga, but then again, it's easy to understand Volkswagen's objection. More specifically, sedans aren't exactly hot stuff in this day and age, especially in a part of the world that loves pickup trucks and utility vehicles.

Approximately 8,000 people currently work at the Emden facility, which Volkswagen converted for EV production back in 2019. It's also worth mentioning that Emden is Volkswagen's most important harbor complex, the third largest port in Europe as far as automotive distribution is concerned.

Styled in a rather love-it-or-hate-it way, the ID.7 looks this way because it was designed with aerodynamics in mind. The most slippery ID. production model yet boasts a drag coefficient of 0.23, which puts it in the same category as the Tesla Model 3.

Coincidentally, the German automaker intends to steal a few customers away from the Model 3 with its all-new electric sedan. It's not the only rival, though, because Hyundai offers the Ioniq 6 on the E-GMP platform of the Ioniq 5 and yet-unreleased Ioniq 7.

In the first instance, the ID.7 will be available as the ID.7 Pro, referring to a 77-kWh battery pack and rear-mounted electric motor. The ID.7 Pro S will follow suit with 86 kWh under its belt, promising up to 435 miles (700 kilometers) between charging stops. The Pro is estimated at 382 miles (615 kilometers) as per the European WLTP combined testing cycle.

Both the Pro and Pro S rely on a 210-kW electric motor, with 210 kilowatts converting to 286 metric ponies or 282 mechanical ponies. Codenamed APP550, said motor can summon up to 550 Nm (406 pound-feet).

There is a dual-motor powertrain in the offing as well, and Volkswagen is also putting the finishing touches on a performance-oriented variant. ID.7 GTX is what Volkswagen calls the newcomer, which will go official at IAA Mobility in Munich in September 2023.

The GTX is believed to combine the 282-hp rear electric motor of the Pro and Pro S with the 107-hp front electric motor of the ID.4 GTX, resulting in approximately 390 horsepower on full song. Certainly quicker than the Pro S, the GTX will – obviously enough – offer less driving range than the Pro S.

In April this year, the German automaker presented the all-new ID.7 as its unofficial successor of the iconic Passat sedan as the brand's first-ever worldwide EV model for the mid-size class.

Sedans are not dead yet but are slowly transforming into liftbacks (even crossover sedans like the Toyota Crown) or EV models. Well, the Volkswagen ID.7 is both – a five-door liftback powered by electricity stored in a battery pack and underpinned by the Volkswagen Group's modular MEB architecture dedicated to EVs.

Following the arrival of the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, and ID. Buzz, the new ID.7, is labeled as a premium mid-size sedan featuring a new high-efficiency powertrain consisting of the APP 550 electric motor and an 82-kWh or 91-kWh battery pack (77 and 86 kWh usable capacities, respectively).

After it was officially announced back in April, Volkswagen is officially launching the model – including in America as it continues to "ramp up its electric transformation." It's more than 16 feet long and "equipped with the best convenience features," the ID.7 has a new drivetrain, longer range, quick charging, generous space, plus "a brand new high-tech interior concept and uncompromising quality."

The ID. 7's order books recently opened in Europe, and the versions for the Old Continent and North American markets will be produced in Volkswagen's electric mobility factory in Emden, Germany. That's why it makes sense to see the automaker speak of the ID.7 on its corporate website in America, too. However, the information is not yet completely transformed for the US market – VW speaks of 402 lb-ft of torque for the ID.7 Pro but still gives us the range according to WLTP procedures instead of EPA (386 miles or 621 km).

We also do not have any official information regarding the MSRPs; instead, VW rants about the main features of the electric liftback sedan. The ID.7 is 195.3 inches long, has a 117-in wheelbase, and a height of 60.5 inches, making it the "lowest slung" ID. model to date. Width stands at 73.3 inches, and the electric-opening trunk lid hides a space of 18.8 cu ft of total capacity – which can be extended up to 56.0 cu ft.

Inside, the Volkswagen ID.7 has a standard augmented-reality (AR) head-up display, an all-new 15-inch infotainment touchscreen display, a 30-color ambient lighting system, plus an available 700-watt Harman/Kardon premium sound system with 12 speakers plus a center speaker and a subwoofer. Additionally, the driver and front passenger's seats have memory functions and 12-way electric adjustment.

For the powertrain, the primary goals were reducing energy consumption and increasing range – supported by the aerodynamic body, the Volkswagen ID.7 swoops to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds and tops out at 112 mph. The battery pack has a new charging and thermal management function, plus the model is equipped with Park Assist Plus, Side Assist, and the recently upgraded Travel Assist – which offers assisted lane changing when traveling on multi-lane freeways at speeds above 56 mph.

The ID.7 is the flagship among electric Volkswagen models - a progressive fastback saloon with a long range. Volkswagen is now expanding the ID.7 portfolio with an estate car: the ID.7 Tourer. The new Volkswagen model is one of the first all-electric estate cars in the upper mid-sized class. Volkswagen is also represented in this class with the new Passat Variant. Both product lines complement each other and together cover all relevant drive types. The aerodynamic ID.7 Tourer combines the emission advantages of electric mobility with long ranges and a very high load capacity (up to 1,714 litres) - parameters that combine many requirements of the business and private world more sustainably than ever before.

Electric business class

Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, says: "Together with the ID.7 fastback saloon and the new Passat Variant, the new ID.7 Tourer perfectly rounds off our offering in the upper mid-sized class. It is particularly attractive for frequent drivers and business customers thanks to its generous space and long ranges."

Tourer as fusion of estate and shooting brake

The ID.7 Tourer differs significantly from the fastback saloon at the rear. The design of the electric estate is characterised in particular by a long roof line. In terms of style, the avant-garde Tourer is a fusion of a classic estate in the format of the Passat and a particularly dynamic shooting brake such as the Arteon. Thanks to the increased height at the rear, the luggage compartment volume is even larger than that of the fastback saloon: with five people on board, and the rear seats in cargo position, ID.7 Tourer can accommodate luggage with a volume of up to 605 litres. When loaded up to the backrests of the front seats and up to the roof, this figure rises to 1,714 litres; in this case, the load area is almost two metres long.

ChatGPT is on board for the first time

The new ID.7 Tourer will be launched with extensive standard equipment, as is shown by the Pro version. Taking Germany as an example: the standard exterior features include LED headlights and LED tail light clusters, diamond-cut 19-inch alloy wheels and roof rails. The interior and technology equipment includes the keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access, luggage partition net, 10-colour background lighting, enhanced augmented reality head-up display, rear view camera system, two-zone automatic air conditioner with smart air vents and heated front seats. The new IDA voice assistant is operated using natural language. Within the system limits, this not only enables control of many vehicle functions, but also answers specific questions on all conceivable subjects by accessing online databases and features new integration of ChatGPT (artificial intelligence, AI). ChatGPT should be available with a time delay. An optional Wellness In-Car-App is also new on board. This allows various vehicle functions to be adjusted via preconfigured programmes to enhance well-being during the journey or breaks.

Optional panoramic sunroof

As for the ID.7 fastback saloon, the panoramic sunroof with smart glass is also available for the new ID.7 Tourer. The transparent roof can be made opaque or transparent electronically by means of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) layer integrated in the glass.

Dynamic proportions

The ID.7 Tourer shares most of its exterior dimensions with the ID.7 fastback saloon. Both models are 4,961 mm long and have a very long wheelbase of 2,971 mm with correspondingly short body overhangs as distinguishing features. The width of the two ID.7 models is 1,862 mm (without exterior mirrors). Both ID.7 bodies are 1,536 mm high. Both models differ significantly from each other in the rear body area: the new ID.7 Tourer is characterised by a roof line that extends far to the rear between the C- and D-pillars and thus increases the height in this area. Thanks to the longer roof and steeper boot lid, the ID.7 Tourer offers even more luggage compartment capacity.

Front section reflects new evolutionary stage of the ID. Design

As with the ID.7 saloon, the front in particular reflects the next evolutionary stage of the ID. design. It has significantly sharper contours and clearly shows a high level of precision and quality. The headlights now have a slimmer look and bear an even greater resemblance to human features with their new modules. As an option, the ID.7 Tourer will be available with IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights including a horizontal LED strip to the left and right of the illuminated Volkswagen logo as well as the automatic main-beam control function Dynamic Light Assist (interactive continuous high beam that does not dazzle oncoming traffic).

Elongated silhouette

The long roofline is a distinguishing feature of the side design of the new ID.7 Tourer. The line that extends into the roof spoiler visually matches the dynamic proportions of the new Volkswagen. The side contours are flanked by black, aerodynamically flat roof rails. Below the window sill, the striking character line with a sharp undercut creates powerful, positive tension in the silhouette of the ID.7 Tourer. Depending on the equipment, the aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels come in sizes of 19 or optionally 20 inches. A optionally 21-inch wheel rim is scheduled to follow.

Rear end with horizontal LED strip

The steep boot lid of the ID.7 Tourer ensures a distinctive look and additional luggage compartment capacity. The horizontal body design at the rear lends the vehicle a wide and powerful appearance. This effect is enhanced by the dominant LED light strip (optionally as 3D LED tail light clusters with dynamic brake and turn signals). Depending on the equipment, the Volkswagen logo in the horizontal LED strip is also illuminated. The upper area at the rear also has a distinctive look: the roof pillars and window surfaces of the cabin are drawn inwards, creating a powerful shoulder section in the area below.

Panoramic sunroof with smart glass

The ID.7 Tourer can be optionally configured with the new panoramic sunroof with smart glass. The transparent roof can be made opaque or transparent from one moment to the next by means of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) layer integrated in the glass. Switchover is activated by touch control in the roof console or by the IDA voice assistant. The electronic PDLC layer is de-energised when the glass is opaque. This causes the crystals in the layer to arrange themselves so that the glass is no longer transparent. In contrast, as soon as an electric voltage is applied to the layer, the crystals then sort themselves so that light is again allowed to pass through. In addition to this switchable glare protection function, layers in the glass also reflect the energy-rich infra-red rays in the sunlight that would otherwise heat up the vehicle interior in sunny weather. Likewise, the heat radiation from the heating is reflected by the smart glass and thus retained in the interior. This creates a high level of comfort for the passengers, especially in winter.

Travel and luggage compartment

The ID.7 features a completely new and independent cockpit architecture with its standard-equipment augmented reality head-up display. The ID.7 Tourer has adopted the entire instrument landscape from the fastback saloon. The same applies to the generous amount of space in the first and second seat rows. Behind the asymmetrically split and folding rear bench seat, however, there is now a luggage compartment with an even larger volume. When fully loaded up to the backrests of the first row of seats (loaded roof-high with luggage partition net), the stowage volume increases from 1,586 to 1,714 litres compared with the fastback saloon. The maximum load capacity with five people on board is 605 litres when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrest (rear seat backrest in upright cargo position); this value corresponds to an increase of 73 litres. The dimensions for the luggage compartment floor are identical: its length is 1,075 mm up to the rear bench seat. When the rear seat backrests are folded down, the largely flat load area length increases to 1,948 mm. The maximum width between the wheel arches is exactly 1,000 mm.

The GTX is increasingly establishing itself as an independent Volkswagen product brand in the style of the iconic GTI models. The ID.7 GTX Tourer additionally comes with a unique selling point: it is the most powerful Volkswagen estate car ever built. The extended standard equipment package includes details such as the electric dual-motor all-wheel drive (4MOTION) and IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights plus 3D LED tail light clusters and illuminated Volkswagen logos on the GTX-specific front and rear. Pre-sales start in the spring.

GTX sustainability

The ID.7 GTX Tourer paves the way for a new type of sporty mobility by combining the spaciousness of a large estate with the performance of a sports car and the sustainability of electric mobility. A fascinating feature is the instantly felt punch from the two electric drive motors, which provide maximum power and torque in a fraction of a second. Thanks to its new high-efficiency drive and first-class aerodynamics, the ID.7 GTX Tourer will be able to cover long distances between two charging stops. A new lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 86 kWh (net) contributes to the high efficiency. This can be charged with up to 200 kW at DC quick-charging stations. This means the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in significantly less than 30 minutes under ideal conditions.

GTX enhancements

The front of the ID.7 GTX Tourer is distinguished from the 210 kW models in the product line by a distinctive bumper with honeycomb grille and light graphics characteristic for GTX models. All black elements additionally have a high-gloss finish. This also applies to the side sills and the lower area of the rear bumper in GTX design. The outer roof frame strips are also completely black and otherwise have a contrasting matt silver finish. The new 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels are matched to the GTX design. A new 21-inch alloy wheel will follow as optional equipment. The interior is refined by features such as customised seats (heated at the front) with perforated GTX lettering in the backrests, a GTX-specific multifunction steering wheel with red decorative stitching, red piping on the seats as well as red seams on the cockpit and door panels.

GTX spaciousness

The new ID.7 GTX Tourer combines maximum sportiness with maximum stowage space. A volume of 1,714 litres up to the backrests of the first row of seats (loaded roof-high with luggage partition net) is available. With five people on board, the capacity is 605 litres when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrest (rear seat backrest in upright cargo position). The luggage compartment floor measures 1,075 mm in length up to the rear bench seat. When the rear seat backrests are folded down, the largely flat load area length increases to 1,948 mm. The maximum width between the wheel arches is exactly 1,000 mm. With this load capacity, the new ID.7 GTX Tourer has enough space for all kinds of equipment.

GTX with panoramic sunroof

As for the ID.7 fastback saloon, the optional panoramic sunroof with smart glass is available for the new ID.7 Tourer and thus also for the GTX version. The transparent roof can be made opaque or transparent electronically by means of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) layer integrated in the glass.

GTX standard equipment

In addition to the GTX customisation features, the extended standard equipment in the ID.7 GTX Tourer includes IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights as well as illuminated Volkswagen logos at the front and rear and 30-colour background lighting. The ID.7 GTX Tourer always comes as standard with details such as an enhanced augmented reality head-up display, App Connect Wireless for Apple Car Play and Android Auto, the IDA voice assistant, a two-zone automatic air conditioner (optional equipment: three-zone automatic air conditioner Air Care Climatronic), the keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access and an anti-theft alarm. Optionally available are assist systems such as the new exit warning system (warning about traffic approaching from behind when exiting the vehicle), Connected Travel Assist with online data (assisted lateral and longitudinal guidance including assisted lane changing) as well as Park Assist Plus with memory function (automated parking over a distance of up to 50 metres).

GTX colour

As a characteristic GTX colour, the new Kings red metallic paint finish will be available for the most powerful ID.7 Tourer in the product line. The red is a tribute to the paintwork of the first Golf GTI, as the new colour composition references the classic solid Tornado red of the icon. The lower body area, GTX lettering and the entire roof of the new ID.7 GTX Tourer are generally finished in high-gloss black. Like all ID.7 models, the exterior mirror housings are painted black. As an alternative to Kings red metallic, the ID.7 GTX Tourer can be ordered in Glacier white metallic, Scale silver metallic, Grenadilla black metallic and Moonstone grey solid.

GTX front

The new ID.7 GTX Tourer is recognisable from the front by its striking and independently designed bumper. On the left and right, the sides of the aerodynamic front feature new daytime running lights that come as standard - they comprise two LED triangles positioned on top of each other to create an arrowhead shape and are now part of the visual insignia of all the new GTX models. In the centre at the front, there is a new GTX air intake grille in a honeycomb design that identifies the ID.7 Tourer as a GTX model. The bumper is aerodynamically designed to combine low aerodynamic drag with a high front axle downforce. The front of the ID.7 GTX Tourer is also visually enhanced by the illuminated Volkswagen logo as standard.

GTX rear

The rear of the ID.7 GTX Tourer also has unique features. Here, a honeycomb grille extends across almost the entire width of the bumper in the lower area and identifies the Volkswagen as a GTX. A diffuser serves as a finishing element towards the ground. The honeycomb grille and diffuser are visually separated by a narrow red reflector strip. All black elements here have a high-gloss finish. This also applies to the GTX lettering on the boot lid, which is used instead of the ID.7 lettering on the ID.7 GTX Tourer. The sporty flagship model is furthermore equipped as standard with customisable 3D LED tail light clusters, including a red illuminated Volkswagen logo.

GTX alloy wheels

The newly designed 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels immediately identify the most powerful ID.7 Tourer as a GTX from the side. The new GTX wheel rims can optionally be ordered completely in high-gloss black; the standard variant also has black inner surfaces but features diamond-cut and thus light aluminium-coloured outer surfaces. A new 21-inch alloy wheel will be available as an option.

GTX with smart glass

The ID.7 GTX Tourer is available with the panoramic sunroof with smart glass as an option. The radiation from the heating is also reflected by the smart glass and thus retained in the interior. This creates a high level of comfort for passengers, especially in winter.

GTX-specific standard seats

The perfect balance between comfort and sportiness is ensured in the ID.7 GTX Tourer by very ergonomically designed seats in the GTX-specific design. The seat centre panels and outer surfaces are finished in fabric, while the seat inside bolsters, shoulder areas and head restraints are covered in ArtVelours Eco microfleece. A leatherette that is pleasant to the touch is additionally used between the seat bolsters and outer surfaces. The seats are enhanced by red decorative seams and perforated red GTX lettering in the backrests. The GTX design is rounded off by red piping in the cockpit and door trims. The cross-stitching on the multifunction steering wheel and the inner surface of the lower steering wheel spoke are always finished in red. The GTX lettering is incorporated there in chrome.

GTX-specific ergoActive seats

As an option, the sporty Tourer model can be equipped with custom GTX-specific ergoActive front seats. The inner surfaces of the seats and the head restraints are covered with ArtVelours Eco microfleece. The outer seat surfaces are covered in textile fabric and a high-quality leatherette. The seat backrests feature perforated red GTX lettering. The GTX enhancements also include red piping between the inner and outer surfaces of the seats. The ergoActive front seats offer electric 12-way adjustment, a memory function, convenient entry (seat is automatically moved back when getting in and out) and seat depth adjustment (adjustable thigh support). In addition, the seats are equipped with a sophisticated pressure point massage function in the backrest, alternating raising of the seat cushion to activate the back muscles and innovative air conditioning. In addition to the individual temperature settings (cooling and heating), the driver and front passenger can alternatively activate an automatic mode. Here, temperature and moisture sensors in the seats detect the cooling and/or heating requirement and control the climate accordingly. Three special modes can also be selected: maximum heating, maximum ventilation and maximum drying. The bolsters of the seat cushions and backrest are also heated and ventilated. All activated seat air conditioning and massage functions switch off again automatically after a predefined time. The ergoActive front seats are part of the Interior Plus Package, which also includes a 700-watt sound system from Harman Kardon and seat heating for the rear.

Additional GTX equipment

In addition to the custom visual exterior and interior features, the extended GTX standard equipment package includes the following: the electric dual-motor all-wheel drive (4MOTION), DC charging with up to 200 kW, a specifically tuned chassis, sporty progressive steering, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, LED tail light clusters with dynamic turn signals, dark privacy glass in the rear, 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels with diamond-cut surfaces (front tyres 235/45 R 20, rear tyres 255/40 R 20) and 30-colour instead of 10-colour background lighting.

GTX interior

Further standard equipment - for both the GTX and Pro models - includes the enhanced augmented reality head-up display (the active navigation of a mobile phone connected via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is now integrated into the augmented reality route display), App-Connect Wireless for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the IDA voice assistant with the integration of ChatGPT, a two-zone automatic air conditioner (optional equipment: three-zone automatic air conditioner Air Care Climatronic), the keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access and an anti-theft alarm.

State-of-the-art assist systems

The ID.7 GTX Tourer will be launched with a wide range of state-of-the-art assist systems. The optionally available systems include Park Assist Plus with memory function. The memory function enables fully automatic parking over a distance of up to 50 m - for example, in the carport at home. Available as an option, Connected Travel Assist with online data (including Lane Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control ACC and Emergency Assist) with assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance has also been enhanced. The latest version has even more human-like response characteristics than its predecessor and now supports assisted lane changes on motorways. An exit warning system is a new development that is an extension of the Side Assist lane change system. Within the system limits, it can protect against one of the doors from being opened if a vehicle (including bicycles) approaches from behind. The optionally available system issues an acoustic and visual warning and, in the event of acute danger, briefly prevents the door(s) in question from being opened. On board as standard is the new-generation traffic hazard alert function. The Car2X system supports the driver by providing information on what is happening on the road and is therefore able to give an early warning of situations such as roadworks, accidents, the end of traffic queues or emergency vehicles. The other assist systems equipped as standard include the autonomous emergency braking system Front Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display.

GTX drive

The ID.7 GTX Tourer, which is electronically limited to a top speed of 180 km/h, is equipped with the electric dual-motor all-wheel drive system (4MOTION) as standard. A separate electric drive motor in each case powers the front and rear axles. Together, both drive motors provide a system output of 250 kW (340 PS) - 40 kW (54 PS) more than on the rear-wheel-drive ID.7 Tourer Pro. With an output of 210 kW (286 PS), an APP550 permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) provides powerful propulsion at the rear axle. The PSM system is extremely efficient and makes its full performance potential available from a standing start. Depending on the power requirement and driving situation, the front electric motor is activated in fractions of a second. This is an asynchronous motor (ASM) with the designation AKA150. It develops a maximum output of 80 kW (109 PS). In standby mode, the ASM system hardly consumes any energy - a special feature of asynchronous motors that makes them ideal as an auxiliary drive. Power distribution is controlled by a modified all-wheel drive controller as well as by interventions by the electronic differential locks (XDS+). All this together leads to increased vehicle stability, improved load change reactions and ultimately to more driving pleasure. The holistic GTX dynamics have been extended to the limit range and the spread between the individual driving modes - from maximum comfort to maximum sportiness - has been increased. The electric 4MOTION all-wheel drive system enables good traction and offers neutral handling that is very easy to control. In addition, the maximum towing capacity (braked with eight per cent gradient) has been increased from 1,000 to 1,400 kg thanks to 4MOTION.

GTX punch

A special feature of the GTX drive is control of the power requirement: in contrast to a combustion engine, it is possible to vary the response characteristics almost infinitely with electric drive motors. In the ID.7 GTX Tourer, Volkswagen has developed a setup that converts the maximum system output and highest torque of the drive into propulsion within milliseconds at the start of an acceleration phase. In the world of combustion engines, only high-performance sports cars, if at all, can offer such immediate power delivery - the punch. In spite of these dynamic characteristics, the ID.7 GTX is also extremely efficient.

GTX charging

Both motors are powered by a new lithium-ion battery - Volkswagen's largest to date, providing an energy content of 86 kWh (net); the gross energy content is 91 kWh. In comparison, the ID.7 Tourer Pro with rear-wheel drive has a 77 kWh battery (net). Compared with the 77 kWh battery, the 86 kWh battery is equipped with 13 instead of 12 battery modules, among other things. The battery system is integrated into the underbody. In detail, the battery assembly comprises the underbody guard, the all-round frame of the battery housing, a base plate with its own integrated cooling system, the battery modules, a battery management system, a cell management controller, the upper housing section and a network of lines and connectors. The new battery of the ID.7 GTX Tourer is charged with up to 200 kW at DC quick-charging stations. Under ideal conditions, battery charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes significantly less than 30 minutes when charged with 200 kW.

GTX journeys

On journeys, an innovative charging and thermal management function makes sure the battery is conditioned ahead of the next DC charging stop. Thanks to this electronic preparation, the ID.7 GTX Tourer is supplied with energy again as quickly as possible on long journeys with one or more charging stops. The battery is heated to the ideal temperature before the charging stop so it can be charged at maximum power. This enables the charging time to be reduced by several minutes, particularly in winter. When route guidance by the optional navigation system with the Electric Vehicle Route Planner is active, pre-conditioning is started automatically on the way to the next quick-charging station. Without active route guidance, the function can also be manually activated using the charging menu in the infotainment system. Routes with up to ten charging stops and ten stopovers can be planned on a smartphone or on the web portal and then transferred to the infotainment system of the ID.7 GTX Tourer. The software automatically integrates the ideal charging stops into the route guidance of the navigation system - the driver does not have to search for the charging points first, but only has to follow the suggestions of the infotainment system.
