Porsche confirms petrol-electric Cayenne - - Source: Autocar
Porsche is planning to produce a petrol-electric version of the Cayenne off-roader using hybrid technology purchased from Toyota. Speaking at the Detroit show, chairman Wendelin Wiedeking said Porsche wanted to boost the Cayenne’s appeal through hybrid technology.
‘At the moment it is the only way to meet future emission regulations,’ he said. The hybrid Cayenne would likely use a 3.3 V6 and electric motor producing 270bhp — the same system Toyota is preparing to launch the Lexus RX400h.
Wiedeking wouldn’t elaborate on Porsche’s long-term plans, although he admits the German car maker is not in a position to fund an expensive hybrid development program on its own.
At the same time, Wiedeking scotched rumours that Porsche was considering the technology for the 911 or Boxster.

the Achille's heel of almost all SUV's is their horrendous gas mileage. Don't have the exact number but there is already a ridiculous number of people in line for the RX400h... think about it - there is a LARGE number of people who want SUV's just to have an SUV. They couldn't care less if it had 500hp, can climb a 60 degree incline, or whatever... they want the LOOKS. The carmakers who are combining SUV's with Hybrid technology are sitting on a cashcow. A Porsche SUV that gets ~25+ mpg? (what kind of numbers are they predicting?) That will be golden and people WILL want that...
Smart move by Porsche.

What's wrong with having a brand that just sells performance cars? I don't see Ferrari offering an SUV and they seem to be doing ok.

...the argument "but it's a Porsche" is a bit old by now, don't you think? I think most of the general populace have come to accept that there is a Porsche SUV. Does that mean I would ever buy one? No.
I'll take the new Audi Q7 tho....

Auto news on Jan 27th 2010:
"2011 model of Porsche Corolla is coming soon with 200hp 2.4L inline-4, now everyone can afford a Porsche."
There should be just one Cayenne model out there and that is the Cayenne Turbo. Stupid move Porsche.

whatcha gonna do. They came out with an suv, big freakin deal. Lambo had an SUV out back in the day too. What you have to look at is the big picture. They make limited quatities and people buy them.

Porsche expects Cayenne sales to recover - - Reuters / April 20, 2005 - - Source: Automotive News
FRANKFURT -- Porsche AG expects sales of its Cayenne SUV to recover over the next few months in the United States, its finance chief said on Wednesday.
"We are optimistic that we will reach Cayenne sales from last year," Holger Haerter said.
Porsche's North American Cayenne Sales have declined since the start of the year and deliveries fell sharply by 27 percent to 1,102 last month, while sales of its revamped core 911 sports coupe rose 24 percent.
Haerter said the fall in March was partly due to a delivery bottleneck in fitting a new seatbelt system to cars.

Porsche reminds me of Boeing. When the 911/Boxster lag in sales, the SUV picks up the slack and now vice versa. When we go to war, the economy does not do so well so people dont fly as much and airlines dont buy commercial aircraft but they buy military aircraft.

Don't see a problem with them building an suv and a ferrari suv sounds pretty hot. Companies like these can really change the image/performance of the tip over suvs that are most seen on the road and add to short list - ml55, x5 4.6, etc.
If companies can get the soul of a sports car into an suv it just makes the package all that more marketable.

More power with facelift
Automobile mag is reporting that during the Cayenne facelift there will be additional power for all models. The V6 will drop the 3.2 liter engine and get the new 3.6 VW engine with 280HP, the Cayenne S will add 20 extra HP and the turbo will add 50HP to 500HP and there will be a Turbo S model with 550HP some time later.
