loving everything, but the rear lacks porsche identity. without badging, you could mistake the rear as a new infiniti or hyundai. maybe its just the taillights...

4,177 Twinkies - and it shows
by Michael Harley (RSS feed) on May 28th, 2010 at 11:58AM
<SMALL>2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo – Click above for high-res image gallery</SMALL>

Imagine, for a moment, that the Porsche engineering team has dropped 4,177 individually wrapped Twinkies on the lab floor. The yellow cream-filled sponge cakes are scattered shin-deep across the smooth ceramic tiles and kicked into the corners by technicians wearing white lab coats as more hit the floor. Individually, the cakes aren't very heavy. However, add 4,177 of the treats together and they weigh nearly 400 pounds.

Those thousands of Twinkies represent the average weight removed by Porsche on its all-new 2011 Cayenne. Thanks to a massive diet, the automaker's SUV emerges as a toned athlete – and we just spent two days flogging it on the track and off-road course at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. What's under its fresh new skin, and where did all that weight go? How does the Cayenne perform on the track? Just as importantly, has it lost its off-road capabilities? Find out this and more after the jump.

Wow, nice improvements inside and out!
A month ago I spent a day helping my brother drive his 1G Cayenne Turbo back from Miami to NYC. Surprisingly it did not feel like it weighted 2.5 ton in handling, acceleration and braking.

Love the new 2G front end and center stackup . I forgot to bring my camera with me to Miami but I was amazed at he number of exotics down there. Envious of those of you who get to see them all the time.

I don't mean to be snarky but I think I'd take a Touareg over this in terms of looks and interior.

Porsche ownership experience and the turbo Cayenne though? FTMFW.

the more I look at it, the more I think the metal work detailing is a bit too chunky. maybe if it was more subdued it would look classier.

The buttons do look like a lot, but I like it... especially the placement. Everything's basically at your fingertips. The seats are finally soft and plush, unlike the previous gen Cayenne which my mom can't sit in comfortably. I still hate the rear of this car.

I like the 2 'oh shit' handle bars design, but I don't understand why the driver has the 2 handles as well. What I really like is how the navi will appear in one of the clustered gauges. And it's amazing how well it handles with nearly bald tires.

Post 2012 Porsche Cayenne GTS

Press release...

The SUV with the driving fun of a sports car is entering its second generation. In Beijing, at the Auto China 2012, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is celebrating the world premiere of the new Cayenne GTS. Its concept: concentration on sporty performance. Its recipe: a more powerful engine, more dynamic power development, a tauter chassis with lower ride height, emphatically sporty equipment. In the process, the new Cayenne GTS doesn’t just fill the gap between the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo but also differentiates itself clearly from the other models with its own special character.

The Cayenne GTS’s bonnet conceals a 420 hp (309 kW) uprated V8 engine, based on the Cayenne S power unit. Power transmission is ensured by the eight-speed Tip-tronic S with integrated auto start/stop function. An especially dynamically tuned en-gine and transmission design reinforces the emphatically sporty characteristics, ena-bling short bursts of speed at any time. The Cayenne GTS sprints from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, reaching 160 km/h in 13.3 seconds. The top speed is 261 km/h and the NEDC fuel consumption 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres.

The specially tuned chassis ensures thrilling driving dynamics. It is more tautly tuned, equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and lowers the body by 24 mm relative to the Cayenne S. As a result, the new Cayenne GTS is even closer to the road and moves with the sports car’s trademark composure and agility.

The Cayenne GTS’s looks openly proclaim its pronounced sportiness with eye-catching features such as the front-end borrowed from the Cayenne Turbo, frames and trims in high-gloss black, prominent side skirts and wider wheel arches as well as a distinctive roof spoiler with twin-wing profile. The prevailing ambiance of the inte-rior is sporty elegance, the GTS features a leather interior with Alcantara elements as standard. Front sports seats with eight adjustment options are also featured as stan-dard in the new Cayenne GTS.

The Cayenne GTS will come to market in July 2012 with a price tag in Germany of 90,774 euro including value-added tax.

I like it. I love that interior. Buddy from work has a 04 S and for a non-turbo suv that weighs a bunch, it's a really good "car". That's what it feels like, a car, not an SUV. Drive, turns, brakes, everything is great. I can't imagine what the new ones feel like when 04 with 230 000km feels like that.

One word: Terrific.

I would not be in the FX if this iteration of the Cayenne was available when I was shopping for a SUV/CUV.

I absolutely LOVE the interior.

Post 2014 Porsche Cayenne Platinum Edition

Press release...

Porsche is upgrading the Cayenne six-cylinder model via a special series known as the Platinum Edition. The Platinum Edition Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel models feature some especially high-quality equipment and offer many of the most-requested options as standard. Externally, the special status of these models is demonstrated by the numerous detailed paint finishes in Platinum Silver Metallic, while an elegant ambience has been created in the interior with exclusive two-tone fittings. Porsche only assigns the Platinum Edition designation to its exclusive, elegant vehicle ranges that are available for a limited period only.

The enhanced equipment range available in these vehicles is designed to increase comfort and safety in particular. For example, the Cayenne Platinum Edition models feature the eight-gear Tiptronic S, Bi-Xenon main headlights and Power Steering Plus, as well as the ParkAssist system at the front and rear as standard. The automatic anti-dazzle interior mirrors eliminate the dazzle from traffic behind the vehicle and the privacy glazing (also available as standard) protects the rear passengers from unwanted attention.

Painted in Platinum Silver Metallic, the lateral and central air intake grill fins, the side window strips, the rear spoiler lip and the trim strip on the tailgate create a shimmering effect. The standard colour range includes monotone paint finishes in Black and White, and Meteor Grey Metallic, Basalt Black Metallic and Mahogany Metallic are available as further colour options. The Carrara White Metallic paint finish is also an option available exclusively for this Cayenne edition. The look is rounded off by the 19-inch Cayenne Design II wheels with coloured crest.

The Black/Luxor Beige two-tone combination, reserved for this special edition, creates an exclusively elegant ambience in the interior. The vehicles come with a partial leather interior as standard, but a full leather interior is also available as an option. The floor mats, with Luxor Beige edging and Porsche logo, and the front door entry guards with the "Platinum Edition" logo, represent further highlights.

The standard SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles and the embossed Porsche crest on the headrests at the front and rear emphasise the high quality of the vehicle. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, including a navigation module, is also a standard feature: The PCM includes a high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen and a sound system with 11 loudspeakers and total power of 235 watt.

The Cayenne Platinum Edition offers an output of 300 hp (220 kW). In combination with the Tiptronic S, the vehicle's NEDC fuel consumption is 9.9 litres/100 km (236 g/km CO2). The three litre V6 engine in the Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition offers an output of 245 hp (180 kW) and a fuel consumption level of 7.2 litres of diesel over 100 kilometres (189 g/km CO2). The Cayenne Platinum Edition costs €66,379 and it is €67,212 for the Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition (including VAT). The Platinum Edition models are due to be available on the market in January 2014.

Now we know this SUV can handle higher speeds...

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013...n_toronto.html

A Mississauga man faces charges after police say they clocked a Porsche SUV travelling at 233 km/h (145 MPH) on Highway 401.

Provincial police say an officer running a speed trap on a stretch of the highway in Toronto spotted the eastbound Porsche Cayenne near Markham Rd. in Scarborough, zipping by in a 100 km/h zone around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

He notified other officers, who intercepted and stopped the eastbound vehicle in Whitby.

Police allege they discovered the driver had been drinking and was also sought on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court.

Calvin Williams, 29, is charged with dangerous driving, stunt driving, impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit.

Press release...

An engine output of 550 hp (405 kW) makes the new Cayenne Turbo S the flagship model of the Porsche SUV range. Thanks to its sophisticated active suspension, this top athlete with an SUV styling surpasses the driving dynamics of many sports cars. Nonetheless, the Cayenne retains all basic characteristics of the series, such as extensive off-road capabilities, high travel comfort and superior traction power.

Cayenne Turbo S 4.8 litre biturbo V8 with 550 hp (405 kW), eight-speed Tiptronic S, actively controlled all-wheel drive PTM, acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, top speed 283 km/h, fuel consumption (NEDC) 11.5 l/100 km, CO2 km 270 g/km.

The Cayenne Turbo S is designed for optimum driving dynamics throughout. That's why it comes with all relevant control systems as standard. The combination of air suspension and PASM active damping control is borrowed from the Cayenne Turbo. This is complemented by the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), which eliminates swaying in corners almost entirely, resulting in improved agility and comfort. The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), which is also standard equipment in this model, uses variable torque distribution to the rear wheels, and an electronically controlled rear differential lock, which translates into more agility in all driving situations. The new Cayenne Turbo S also comes with the Sport Chrono Package as standard.

Exterior features and equipment of the Cayenne Turbo S meet the high standards of a flagship model. Numerous exterior features such as air intake grilles, headlight housing and mirror components are in black high-gloss finish. The standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels with coloured Porsche crest are painted in gloss black on the inside, an exclusive styling for the Cayenne Turbo S.

The Porsche designers also designed two-tone leather interiors in new colours and colour distributions specifically for the new Cayenne Turbo S. These interior features are available in the combination black/carrera red and black/luxor beige. The two-tone leather interiors exclusive to the new top model are respectively refined by matching decorative stitching in the contrasting colours carrera red and luxor beige. The Carbon interior package complements the leather features and emphasises the high quality of vehicles and materials.

Supreme power for sporty dynamics

Supreme power, delivered across a wide rpm range: that's the hallmark of the Cayenne series flagship model. The new Cayenne Turbo S engine produces a maximum torque of 750 Nm between 2.250 rpm and 4,500 rpm; the power curve peaks at 550 hp (405 kW) and 6,000 rpm.

The source of this supreme power is the eight-cylinder engine with 4.8 litre displacement also installed in the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo. The exhaust gases from the two cylinder banks, which are arranged in a V-shape at an angle of 90 degrees, are guided through a set of water-cooled turbochargers. The two compressors force compressed air into the eight combustion chambers through two intercoolers, resulting in an impressive power output per litre. The main difference to the Cayenne Turbo engine: Compression levels were increased, and the motor controller was adjusted, jointly yielding an extra 50 hp and 50 Nm of torque. The extra performance is also reflected visually in the engine compartment by ways of special engine bay styling with carbon fibre elements and a "turbo S" lettering.

Fast gear changes, efficient drive: the eight-speed Tiptronic S

Power is transmitted via an eight-speed Tiptronic S as standard. Supreme agility and maximum driving pleasure are guaranteed by the very fast gear changes that are barely noticeable by the driver. Fast gear changes with uninterrupted traction allow for a very agile driving style - even in automatic mode. The standard auto start/stop function demonstrates that efficiency is a priority to Porsche, even for a very sporty car such as the Cayenne Turbo S. Despite the increased power and enhanced driving performance, the average consumption figures of 11.5 l/100 km are the same as those of the Cayenne Turbo.

Optimised power distribution for excellent driving dynamics

The new Cayenne Turbo S is designed to translate supreme power into exceptional driving dynamics. Accordingly, the new top model of the Porsche SUV range is just about fully equipped with all the technical systems that support a sporty driving style.
The foundation, the interaction of power distribution and chassis, is provided by Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with active all-wheel drive and air suspension including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Active PTM drives the rear axle directly. The multi-plate clutch is electronically controlled by an electric motor and regulates the distribution of drive power to the front axle in a fully variable manner and without fixed distribution. If slipping of the rear axle occurs, for instance when accelerating, the multi-plate clutch intervenes to direct more power to the front axle. This allows gearing of the active four-wheel drive for maximum driving dynamics, which responds before unwanted slippage occurs on either axle.

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus optimised cornering dynamics

The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), which comes as standard in the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, further enhances vehicle dynamics and stability. The system uses variable torque distribution to the rear wheels, and an electronically controlled rear differential lock. PTV Plus improves the steering response and steering precision depending on steering angle and speed, accelerator pedal position, yaw rate and vehicle speed by ways of specific braking of the respective inside rear wheel. This results in direct and dynamic turning into the corner. The electronically controlled rear axle differential lock ensures greater driving stability at high speeds, when cornering at speed, or when the wheels are spinning.

Sport Chrono Package displays sporty driving visually

The standard Sport Chrono Package permits saving the performance data of the Cayenne Turbo S, for example in terms of lap times or transverse and longitudinal acceleration values. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) can render a graphical analysis of the current lap times for the driver. Additionally, lateral and longitudinal acceleration can also be displayed in the TFT display.

Air-spring suspension with active anti-roll system

The chassis offers an even more extensive ability to cater for both sportiness and comfort. This is mainly due to the special adjustment of air suspension and PASM in conjunction with new bearings and dampers. The standard use of the active anti-roll system Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) rounds off the equipment. The chassis control system enhances both driving performance and comfort, as well as ensuring maximum agility and optimal balance of the car. The hydraulic rotary actuators of the active stabilisers on the front and rear axle, generate appropriate forces depending on the steering angle and lateral acceleration forces to counteract the lateral inclination of the vehicle. This results in an extremely comfortable and sporty driving experience, combined with outstanding agility throughout the driving speed range, as well as optimal cornering and balanced load change behaviour.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is fitted with power steering Plus, a speed-sensitive steering system. It becomes tighter at higher speeds, so that the steering remains accurate. At lower speeds, however, the system permits effortless reversing and parking manoeuvres.

Sporty and discreet appearance

The new Cayenne Turbo S makes its number one position plain by subtle but unmistakable visual features. Distinctive features such as the widened wheel arches and the roof spoiler, both painted in body color, particularly stand out.

Numerous exterior elements, such as the entire air intake grille including the fins and the headlight housing, are painted in glossy black as standard. The lower shell and the mirror arms also come with the noble-looking finish. The standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels with coloured Porsche crest are also painted in glossy black on the inside. The two tailpipes in polished aluminum with two outlets each are another eye-catcher at the rear end.

Porsche offers numerous options to customise the appearance of the new Cayenne Turbo S. These include darkened LED tail lights with adaptive brake light, a black high-gloss exterior package, the front and rear panel in stainless steel, and sill protection in aluminium.

New option: Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) with automatic high beam
A new optional extra for the Cayenne Turbo S is the Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus, which comes with black bi-xenon headlights. The new PDLS Plus includes automatic main beam control and a junction light function over the previous active headlight system PDLS. The automatic main beam control detects the light sources of vehicles ahead and oncoming vehicles by means of a camera mounted on the interior mirror, and automatically switches between low and high beam light. The system is activated at a speed of 65 km/h to prevent turning on of the high beams within built-up areas. The junction light function detects crossroads and T-junctions from navigation data. The system then activates the static cornering lights left and right simultaneously for optimal illumination at crossroads. For T-junctions, only the static cornering light on the side facing the intersection is activated.

Exclusive two-tone leather interiors

The interior of the Cayenne Turbo S can be equipped with two-tone leather upholstery in exclusive new colors and color patterns. The available combinations are black/carrera red and black/luxor beige. The exclusive two-tone leather interiors are refined by matching decorative stitching in the contrasting colors carrera red and luxor beige. The contrast stitching decorates the dashboard, door panels, seat backs and backs of the forward head restraints, as well as the standard mats. The two-tone upholstery is complemented by the interior package Carbon, which emphasises the high quality of the materials. The front and rear head restraints come with an embossed Porsche logo. The front door sill plates and the instrument cluster are marked with a distinguishing "turbo S" lettering. The overall appearance of the Cayenne Turbo S may be customised further by optional carbon elements, such as the interior trim package Carbon Handles or the carbon multifunction steering wheel upon request.

Post 2015 Porsche Cayenne

Press release...

A sharper design, boosted efficiency and extensive set of standard features: Those are the key characteristics of the new Porsche Cayenne1). As a sports car among sport utility vehicles (SUVs), besides offering five seats and extensive high-end features, it primarily offers a lot of room for a lot of driving fun. With high performance and typical Porsche design DNA.

The new generation of the Cayenne will launch on the market in five versions: Cay-enne S, Cayenne Turbo, Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S Diesel and – in a world premiere – the Cayenne S E-Hybrid2), which is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. This model, together with the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder, make Porsche the world's only carmaker to offer three plug-in hybrid models. All Cayenne engine versions show improved performance figures as well as better fuel economy than comparable previous versions. A new engine is the 3.6-litre V6 biturbo of the Cayenne S that was fully developed by Porsche.

The Cayenne is a unique success story at Porsche. The company introduced the first generation in 2002. This vehicle made the idea of a sports car in the SUV segment a reality – and it set standards right from the start. Sales have exceeded all expectations: Over 276,000 first generation vehicles were produced (2002 to 2010), and around 303,000 units of the second generation, which was introduced in 2010, have already been produced so far. So the Cayenne is not only boosting profitable growth at Porsche, it is also creating a solid economic foundation for investments in future generations of sports cars.

Sharpened exterior design

In its latest version, Porsche designers have given the Cayenne an even sharper design with precise lines and purposefully placed light refracting edges. Entirely new are the design of the front body, the front wings and the bonnet. Also new are the airblades: These air fins on the right and left of the vehicle's front end efficiently guide cooling air to the intercoolers and also make a strong visual statement.

At first glance, the new Cayenne can be clearly made out as a Porsche by its bi-xenon headlights, which are standard in the base and S models, with "hovering" four-point LED daytime running lights that are typical of Porsche. The high performance standard of the top model, the Cayenne Turbo, is emphasised by standard LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS).

The rear section of the new Cayenne was also thoroughly updated: the layout of the rear lights creates a three-dimensional effect; the brake lights – like the LED daytime running lights in front – are designed in four elements. The license plate recess, boot handle and lights are now integrated more elegantly into the boot lid. Designers also re-designed the car's horizontal lines, giving the vehicle an even fuller stance on the road. The newly designed exhaust tailpipes are now integrated in the lower rear section. An automatically activating boot lid is a standard feature.

In the interior, designers devoted much of their effort to the driver's space – the driver now gets a new multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles as standard; its look and functions are based on the steering wheel of the 918 Spyder. They also made the rear seating system even more comfortable, and seat ventilation can now be ordered as an option for the rear seats.

Better efficiency

Power and torque were boosted while improving fuel economy, enabled by numerous individual modifications to the entire drivetrain: for Porsche these are not incompatible or contradictory goals. For instance, all new Cayenne models consume significantly less fuel, because of a coasting function, the further advanced "auto stop-start function plus" and optimised thermal management. Active cooling air flaps are now being used for the first time in the Cayenne models. They are located behind the middle air inlet and are controlled by engine management. They are opened or closed according to the specific driving situation and cooling needs; this way they adjust the air volume that is available for cooling. When they are closed they improve aerodynamics, which reduces air drag and thereby improves fuel economy.

The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. The technical progress made here is immense compared to the previous Cayenne S Hybrid. The new model has a lithium-ion traction battery with an energy capacity of 10.8 kWh, which enables an all-electric driving range of 18 to 36 km, depending on the style of driving and route topography. The power of the electric motor was more than doubled: from 47 hp (34 kW) to 95 hp (70 kW). The combined fuel consumption is now 3.4 l/100 km (79 g/km CO2). The three-litre V6 supercharged engine (333 hp / 245 kW) and the electric motor (95 hp / 70 kW) produce a combined system power of 416 hp (306 kW) at 5,500 rpm and a total system torque of 590 Newton metres from 1,250 to 4,000 rpm. This enables driving performance on the level of a sports car: zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 243 km/h. The top speed in all-electric driving is 125 km/h. The traction battery can be charged from the electric power grid or while driving. Relevant vehicle data can be called up from a smart phone using the standard Porsche Car Connect feature.

The hybrid tradition at Porsche extends back to the year 1899 and to the Lohner Por-sche – the world's first vehicle to have a battery-powered electric drive as well as a combustion engine, which was designed and built by Ferdinand Porsche. In the current model line-up, the Panamera S E-Hybrid is setting standards worldwide as the first plug-in vehicle of the premium class. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is now transferring this forward-looking technology to the premium SUV segment. Extraordinarily powerful hybrid technology has also already been implemented in a sports car, in a super sports car no less – the 918 Spyder. This car serves as an example of technology transfer from motorsport to production cars: the most advanced form of hybrid drive technology is currently implemented in the 919 Hybrid, and it is also being studied for production vehicles.

The new 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Cayenne S, which was developed entirely at Porsche, is another example of how downsizing with reduced engine displacement and fewer cylinders does not compromise core values: the engine's NEDC fuel consumption is between 9.8 and 9.5 l/100 km (229-223 g/km CO2), which is one litre less than with the previous V8 engine. The biturbo V6 develops a maximum power of 420 hp (309 kW) at 6,000 rpm – a gain of 20 hp/15 kW. The car's torque of 550 Newton metres is available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm (gain of 50 Newton metres). The previous power density of 83 hp (61 kW) per litre engine displacement was increased to 117 hp (86 kW) (gain of around 40 percent). With its standard eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package) – 0.4 seconds faster than the previous Cayenne S. The vehicle's top speed is now 259 km/h (gain of one km/h).

The Cayenne Turbo is characterised by a high level of performance readiness, uninterrupted forward thrust and an ability to handle any driving situation. 4.8-litre engine displacement, eight-cylinders and biturbo boost result in engine power of 520 hp (382 kW) at 6,000 rpm, its torque is 750 Newton metres from 2,250 to 4,000 rpm. This lets the Cayenne Turbo accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds (4.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package). Its top speed is 279 km/h. Fuel consumption is 11.5 to 11.2 l/100 km (267-261 g/km CO2).

The diesel versions of the Cayenne combine sportiness with even better fuel efficiency. For example, the three-litre V6 engine in the Cayenne Diesel produces 262 hp (193 kW) at 4,000 rpm and has a fuel consumption of 6.8 to 6.6 l/100 km (179-173 g/km CO2). Thanks to its SCR system, the car already conforms to the EU6 emissions standard. In interplay with its torque of 580 Newton metres, from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, the car can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds (7.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package), and its top speed is 221 km/h. The 4.2-litre V8 engine of the Cayenne S Diesel produces 385 hp (283 kW) at 3,750 rpm and a torque of 850 Newton metres from 2,000 to 2,750 rpm. From a standstill, it reaches 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (5.3 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package). Its top speed is 252 km/h, and its NEDC fuel consumption is 8.0 l/100 km (209 g/km CO2).

Chassis tuning of the new Cayenne was optimised for even greater comfort, naturally without compromising its dynamic pace. This makes the spread between comfort and sportiness even greater than before – and it validates the Cayenne claim to being the sports car in the SUV segment.

The new Cayenne models will launch on the market starting October 11, 2014. In Germany, the Cayenne Diesel will cost € 66,260, the Cayenne S € 80,183, the Cay-enne S Diesel € 82,087 and the Cayenne Turbo € 128,378. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid will cost € 82,087, which is exactly the price of a Cayenne S Diesel – and is around € 1,000 less than the price of the previous Cayenne S Hybrid. This was made possible by synergistic effects realised by Porsche in the area of hybrid technology. Therefore, effective immediately the price of the Panamera S E-Hybrid is being lowered by over € 6,000 to € 104,221. Cited prices include VAT and country-specific features.

1) Cayenne (model year 2015): Fuel consumption, combined: 11.5 – 6.6 l/100 km; CO2 emissions 267 – 173 g/km; efficiency class F – B

2) Cayenne S E-Hybrid: Fuel consumption, combined: 3.4 l/100 km; electrical energy consumption, combined: 20.8 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions 79 g/km; efficiency class A+

If you type the words “cash” and “cow” into Google Translate, you get “Goldesel,” but you could also just say Porsche Cayenne. Since the ground-breaking and once controversial (“How dare they make a profitable vehicle everyone wants to buy???”) Cayenne came out in 2003, Porsche has sold over 760,000 of them worldwide, many at sticker prices bumping up against 100 grand. Those good at math, and even those not good at math, can see that adds up to a big pile of euro/dollar/yuan.

No surprise, then, that Porsche put a lot of thought into the latest Cayenne SUV. The new Cayenne is wider, longer, lower and lighter than the model it replaces.

“The car is much more athletic,” said Detlev von Platen, Porsche’s board member in charge of sales and marketing.

When it launches in the U.S. in June 2018, buyers will get a choice of two V6 models. Power figures are updated here from yesterday’s German specs to the SAE figures we use in the U.S. Thus, the single-turbo 3.0-liter V6 model produces 335 SAE hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Yesterday we quoted the German press release that listed power at the metric “340 hp.” That’s just under 40 more hp than the previous entry-model Cayenne. The twin-turbo V6 Cayenne is actually 2.9 liters in displacement and produces 434 SAE hp, just under 20 more than the previous model. The single-turbo model gets to 62 mph (not 60) in 5.6 seconds if you get the Sport Chrono package, 5.9 seconds without it. The twin-turbo does it in 4.6/4.9 seconds.

The eight-speed Tiptronic transmission has what Porsche describes as “shorter response times and sportier ratios.” There is also a taller eighth gear for more comfortable highway cruising. It has five driving modes: on-road, mud, gravel, sand and rocks. The default mode is on-road. All Cayenne models will come with active all-wheel drive controlled by Porsche Traction Management.

One thing that will make the new SUV “more athletic” is its 48-volt electrical system, which promises quicker reactions from the electric power steering, rear steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control. Porsche says its 4D Chassis Control System “works in real time, optimizing handling.” An air-suspension system using three-chamber airbags is also available. The rear-steer system is actuated electrically via a motor mounted on the aft end of the rear axle. While it is similar to rear-steer systems on the 911 and Panamera, it has been calibrated specifically for the Cayenne.

Another option is Porsche Surface Coated Brakes, which coat iron discs with tungsten carbide for better stopping. One advantage of this system is the mirrorlike finish of the discs, which looks cool in addition to stopping better.

The body panels are all-aluminum, which, combined with optimized use of high-strength steel in the chassis and even a new lithium-ion polymer battery, saved 143 pounds on average compared to the previous V6 Cayennes.

As for exterior styling, it is not radically different from the first two Cayennes. In fact, you might not be able to pick the new one out of a lineup.

“Our main goal was to sharpen the Cayenne even more,” explained Porsche’s VP of styling Michael Mauer.

Inside is what they’re calling the Porsche Advanced Cockpit. It’s centered on a new 12.3-inch full-HD touchscreen and runs the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management software from last year’s Panamera. It offers everything from online services, internet, real-time traffic and voice control.

While only those two V6 models will be available at launch, von Platen said to look for the V8 Turbo Cayenne at the Frankfurt auto show in a couple weeks and a plug-in hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid “next year.” He also said the Turbo S model strategy for Panamera and Cayenne has moved toward combining the Turbo with a hybrid system to make the Turbo S derivative. So Cayennes will get more fun to drive in the next year, for sure.

Post 2018 Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne Turbo

Press release...

Third generation of the Porsche Cayenne launches

Stuttgart. Porsche is introducing the third generation of the Cayenne. This successful model from the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer is launching as a completely new development and will combine even more of the typical Porsche performance with excellent everyday practicality. Its powerful turbo engines, new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, new chassis systems and innovative display and control concept with total connectivity will take both sport and comfort to the next level. At market launch, there are two newly developed six-cylinder engines to choose from: The Cayenne’s 250-kW (340 hp), three-litre turbo engine delivers 29 kW (40 hp) more than the previous model. The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine in the Cayenne S, which reaches speeds of up to 265 km/h, brings it up to 324 kW (440 hp) – an increase of 15 kW (20 hp). Equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the new Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds.

The Cayenne is based heavily on the iconic 911 sports car: The third edition of the SUV, which has also been enhanced visually, now has mixed tyres and rear-axle steering for the first time. In addition to these typical sports car features, the on-road capabilities are further improved by active all-wheel drive as standard, Porsche 4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation system. Despite its significantly extended standard equipment, the Cayenne weighs up to 65 kilograms less than its predecessor and remains perfectly suited to off-road use.

Dynamic design language: firmer design and larger wheels

Sporty and precise with a clear design – new and yet familiar: The appearance of the Cayenne has been enhanced in the style that runs through the Porsche Design DNA. The enlarged air intakes at the front are clear indicators of the increased performance. The new horizontal light edges mean that the SUV now appears wider and more athletic, even when stationary. With an exterior length increased by 63 millimetres without any change to the wheelbase (2,895 millimetres) and a roof height reduced by nine millimetres compared with its predecessor, the elegant, streamlined impression of the Cayenne, which is 4,918 millimetres long and 1,983 millimetres wide (excluding mirrors), has been noticeably enhanced. The luggage compartment volume is now 770 litres – an increase of 100 litres. The wheels are one inch larger in diameter, with wider tyres on the rear axle for the first time, emphasising the enhanced driving dynamics. The distinctive, three-dimensional Porsche logo spans the redesigned rear lights with three-dimensional light design and end-to-end narrow strip of LEDs.

Porsche is offering a new three-stage lighting concept for the headlights: Every Cayenne is fitted with LED headlights as standard. In the next upgrade, the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) can be selected as an option, offering a variety of light modes such as cornering light and motorway light. The new LED main headlights with matrix beam including PDLS Plus are the best system available. Fully variable light distribution and intensity are enabled by 84 individually activated light-emitting diodes. This means that the Cayenne can offer new functions such as high beam that does not glare opposing traffic, as well as adaptive sign glare control.

Cayenne and Cayenne S market launch

The new Porsche SUV is launching in two variants: The Cayenne with a six-cylinder turbo engine and displacement of three litres delivers 250 kW (340 hp), developing a torque of 450 Nm. That means that even the standard model achieves outstanding driving performance: It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds (5.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package). The maximum speed is 245 km/h. The second model to launch is the Cayenne S. It is driven by a 2.9-litre V6 engine with twin turbocharging. This engine, which has also been newly developed, delivers 324 kW (440 hp), achieving a torque of 550 Nm – 15 kW (20 hp) more than its predecessor. Accordingly, the vehicle accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package: 4.9 seconds). The maximum speed is 265 km/h.

Faster on the road, even more impressive on rough terrain: Tiptronic S and PTM

The Cayenne’s expanded performance range, improving both sportiness and comfort, is due in no small part to the new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox. Shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears enhance both on-road performance and off-road capability. At the other end of the expanded spread between comfort and sportiness, the long-transmission eighth gear ensures low torques, optimised fuel consumption and relaxed driving.

Even on rough terrain, the Cayenne provides straightforward driving pleasure. Programmed off-road modes make it easy for the driver to select the right setup for their drive. The default setting is the Onroad programme. Four other modes activate the conditioning for mild off-road terrain: Mud, Gravel, Sand or Rocks. The drive, chassis and differential locks can be selected to adapt to the relevant scenario. For power distribution, Porsche utilises the active all-wheel drive in all Cayenne models. The intelligent, fully variable Porsche Traction Management (PTM) distributes the driving force between the drive axles. Its hang-on concept is a key principle for the excellent sporting performance of the Cayenne. At the same time, it fulfils all requirements for extensive traction on rough terrain.

Following the 911: lightweight chassis with mixed tyres

The new Cayenne combines three chassis concepts in one new design: sports car, off-roader and touring car. This involved developing a new lightweight chassis base with a front axle featuring a separated link design and a multi-link rear axle. A typical sports car feature is the new mixed tyres, which are now on wheels of at least 19 inches. The mixed tyres improve stability and driving dynamics on bends. Porsche offers wheel sizes up to 21 inches as an option for the Cayenne.

New developments: rear-axle steering, air suspension, roll stabilisation

This format provides the optimal basis for the active chassis systems, which are analysed and synchronised by the integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control system. The system works in real time, optimising handling even further. With the exception of the active PASM damper system (as standard with the Cayenne S), all other chassis systems are new developments. For the first time, the Cayenne is available with electric rear-axle steering. The system, tried and tested both in the 911 and the Panamera, improves agility on bends and stability when changing lanes at high speeds. The reduced turning circle also makes everyday handling of the SUV easier.

The optional adaptive air suspension with new three-chamber technology significantly increases the spread between a sporty, firm connection and the driving comfort expected of a touring car. Just as before, the system enables adjustments to the ground clearance on rough terrain. With the optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation, sporty drivers benefit by changing from a hydraulic to an electric system. This switch is made possible by a powerful 48-volt vehicle electrical system. Shorter response times enable even more precision in the driving dynamics – and even more comfort on moderate drives.

World première: Porsche Surface Coated Brake with tungsten-carbide layer

With the innovative Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB), the sports car manufacturer is once again assuming a pioneering role in the development of high-performance brakes. This world first is available as an option for all Cayenne models and consists of a cast-iron disc with a tungsten-carbide coating. This finish increases the friction values and wear and brake dust are reduced. The brake, exclusive to Porsche, is also visually impressive: The brake callipers are painted white, while the surface of the discs develops a unique gloss level after bedding-in. The PSCB is only available in combination with the 20-inch and the 21-inch wheels. The PCCB ceramic brakes remain the top system in the range.

New Sport Chrono Package with PSM Sport

The new Cayenne offers even more potential when it comes to sporty performance. Porsche has redeveloped the Sport Chrono Package based on the model of the sports car. The Mode button on the steering wheel is one clear indicator of this approach. As well as the Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, the driver can select an individually configurable mode. Pressing the Sport Response button in the centre activates the engine and transmission maps, which are calibrated for maximum performance. The Sport Chrono Package also includes a separate PSM Sport mode, in which the driver can utilise the new Cayenne’s full driving dynamics.

Reduced weight means lower fuel consumption and even more driving pleasure

Sports cars need a lightweight construction. Following the 911 and the Panamera, the new body of the Cayenne also uses an intelligent combination of alloy and steel. The exterior is made entirely of aluminium. The floorpan assembly, front section and virtually all the chassis components are also manufactured from alloy. One particular technical highlight is the innovative lithium-ion polymer starter battery, which alone accounts for a weight saving of 10 kg over the predecessor model. In total, the weight of the Cayenne when empty has been reduced from 2,040 to 1,985 kilograms – even in spite of the significantly extended standard equipment, which now includes LED main headlights, larger wheels, ParkAssist (front and rear), an LTE telephone module including a WiFi hotspot, Porsche Connect services and anticipatory pedestrian protection.

Digital evolution: Porsche Advanced Cockpit and new PCM

With this new generation, the Cayenne is writing a new chapter in the relationship between driver and vehicle: The Porsche Advanced Cockpit is fully integrated into the sporty, luxurious atmosphere. At the heart of the new display and control concept from Porsche is the 12.3-inch full-HD touchscreen from the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM), launched last year with the new Panamera. A range of digital functions can be operated intuitively – including by voice control. The standard Porsche Connect Plus allows access to online services and the Internet. This includes the standard online navigation with real-time traffic information. The analogue controls on the new centre console are focused on the main functions of the vehicle. Other buttons are harmoniously integrated into the smartphone-like, glass-look touch surface, giving acoustic and haptic feedback when operated. In typical Porsche style, the driver has a central analogue tachometer to view. This is flanked by two 7-inch full-HD displays, which display all other relevant driving data plus additional information selected using the multi-function steering wheel. Night Vision Assist with a thermal imaging camera is one of the most important assistance systems, along with Lane Change Assist, Lane Keeping Assist including traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, ParkAssist including Surround View and Porsche InnoDrive including adaptive cruise control.

Your personal Cayenne – more customisation, more online services

At the same time, the new PCM brings the next level of customisation. It is not only the start screen and main menu that can be adjusted to the driver’s needs. Up to six individual profiles can also be configured. As well as a large number of interior settings, a profile is used to store specifications for lights, driving programmes and assistance systems. Depending on the equipment, the driver can also apply their own settings to the new sound systems from Bose® and Burmester®. Plus, the new Cayenne is always online if the driver needs it to be – the expanded Connect Plus services are available through the integrated LTE-enabled SIM card. The engine-independent heating, for example, can be programmed remotely via smartphone. In addition, the Offroad Precision App, specially developed for the Porsche Cayenne, is now also available as part of the new standard package. It allows rough-terrain drives to be documented in detail, helping the driver to improve their own skills using video recordings.

Prices

The third generation of the Porsche Cayenne is available to order now. The Cayenne is available in Germany from EUR 74,828. Prices for the Cayenne S begin at EUR 91,964 – each including VAT and country-specific features.

Even more 911 in an SUV: the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Stuttgart. With its world premiere at the 67th International Motor Show in Frankfurt, the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo is taking its place at the top of the model line. The completely new top-of-the-range model from the third generation of the Cayenne is once again raising the bar for sporty performance in its segment. The four-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 404 kW (550 hp). The increased driving dynamics are based on the combination of innovative technologies, such as active aerodynamics including roof spoiler, controlled three-chamber air suspension, mixed tyres and the new high-performance brake. With additional options, such as rear-axle steering or electric roll stabilisation with a 48-volt system, the SUV can even achieve the driving characteristics of a true sports car. The new Cayenne Turbo accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package) and reaches a top speed of 286 km/h.

Even sharper design

With an exclusive front end and the LED main headlights of the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), the Cayenne Turbo has an appearance that is both dominant and independent. At night, the new Turbo sets itself apart from other Cayenne models with its double-row front light modules. The side view is characterised by standard 21-inch Turbo wheels specially reserved for the top model, in widened wheel arches with painted wheel arch trims. The twin tailpipes, specific to the Turbo, are the key distinguishing features on the rear end. The door trims and rear apron are painted in the exterior colour. The completely new interior demonstrates the increased spread of the Cayenne Turbo: more sportiness and more comfort at the same time. Virtually all the vehicle functions of the fully networked SUV can be displayed and operated using the high-resolution display and touchscreen of the Porsche Advanced Cockpit. Among them, for example, is the BOSE® Surround Sound System with 710 watts, fitted as standard. Drivers and passengers experience this top-of-the-range model in sports seats with 18-way adjustment. The integrated headrests are a new feature and are also reminiscent of the 911. All seats and the multifunction sports steering wheel in an exclusive Turbo design are heated as standard.

Greater power, greater torque: biturbo eight-cylinder with 550 hp

At the heart of the Cayenne Turbo is the new four-litre V8 engine with twin turbocharging. With an output of 404 kW (550 hp), it exceeds the engine of its predecessor by 22 kW (30 hp), while the maximum torque of 770 Nm represents an increase of 20 Nm. The new eight-speed Tiptronic S converts both into acceleration and speed by means of the active all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The new Turbo sprints to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package) and reaches a top speed of 286 km/h. As is characteristic for new engine generations, the exhaust turbochargers are arranged inside the cylinder V, in the “central turbo layout”. The shortened exhaust paths between the combustion chambers and the turbochargers mean that the engine is especially responsive, while the central turbo layout results in significantly improved power delivery. Another advantage is the compact construction of the engine. This enables a lower installation position, which has a positive effect on the driving dynamics: The centre of gravity is lower and the cornering precision is higher.

Active chassis with three-chamber air suspension and mixed tyres

The new lightweight chassis of the Cayenne Turbo combines the best of three worlds: the precision of a sports car, the comfort of a saloon and the adaptability of an off-road vehicle. In particular, the combination of the new three-chamber air suspension with the active shock-absorber system PASM extends the range considerably. The concept of the new mixed tyres with standard dimensions of 285/40 at the front and 315/35 at the rear comes from sports car construction and produces even better longitudinal and lateral power transmission. Three air chambers per spring strut are used in the adaptive air suspension design, therefore the chassis is able to map different spring rates. With six selectable height levels, the ground clearance can be manually adjusted to suit the offroad terrain. They are also actively controlled via five new driving programmes for road journeys and off-road journeys. Complemented by optional rear-axle steering, the electric Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation connected to a 48-volt vehicle electrical system and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+), the new Cayenne Turbo achieves the driving dynamics of a sports car. At the same time, its everyday suitability in terms of parking and turning manoeuvres is improved, as is the comfort level.

First SUV with adaptive roof spoiler and new high-performance brake

The new Cayenne Turbo is the first SUV to have an adaptive roof spoiler as a component of its active aerodynamics. Depending on the position, this optimises efficiency, increases downforce on the rear axle and, in the airbrake position, shortens the braking distance from higher speeds. At full braking from 250 km/h, the SUV comes to a stop up to two metres earlier as a result. The aerodynamic system therefore complements the effect of the new high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) which takes care of deceleration in the Cayenne Turbo as standard. The tungsten carbide layer applied to the steel discs increases braking performance and resistance to wear while reducing the amount of brake dust at the same time, meaning less dirt on the rims. The top system in the programme remains the optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).

The new Cayenne Turbo is available to order now, with the market launch in Europe scheduled for the end of 2017. In Germany, the top model of the SUV model line costs EUR 138,850 including VAT and country-specific features.
