Boxster Pays Tribute To Legend Of Dean

One man will forever be associated with the Porsche 550 Spyder, launched exactly 50 years ago. He's movie icon James Dean, and to mark the occasion Porsche has unveiled the Boxster S Anniversary Edition. It celebrates the legendary mid-engined racer, famous for being the car in which the star died in 1955 (bottom image). The 550 Spyder debuted in 1953 and was one of the finest-handling machines of its generation. Exactly 1,953 of the cars will be built, all finished in trademark silver with a brown canvas roof. It's on sale in March, priced £41,700.

No more masks

Here are the latest photos of the next-generation Boxster: wider, roomier and a bit more aggressive than the current version. It will be more distinctly differentiated from the 911, yet it won't be undergoing any radical overhauls. Stylistic changes will be limited to wider wheel arches, bumpers and side air intakes, larger wheels, a flatter rear deck and an upgraded cabin, with the centre console-mounted multi-media system as used in the Cayenne. The oval headlights, grille taillights will undergo minor restyling, and increasing width a little will create a little more room for occupants. The roadster will keep its folding fabric roof - but it is probably going to gain a sister model, a hard-topped coupe (see earlier pictures).

The Boxster will retain its 2.7-litre engine, with the standard version delivering 240bhp and the S 280bhp; Porsche is keen to keep power down, in order not to stray into 911 territory. A 3.4-litre, 300bhp version has also been rumoured. Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions will be offered, the latter with a double-clutch system similar to Audi's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

2005 Porsche Boxster revealed in roadster, coupe guises - - - By GREG KABLE - - Source: Autoweek

PORSCHE’S POPULAR MID-ENGINE entry-level roadster is extensively reworked for 2005 with many changes that promise to make this second-generation model as memorable as the original when it was launched in 1996.

Codenamed 987, the 2005 Boxster will be built in both roadster and coupe guises in a move to boost Porsche sales beyond the record levels of the 2002 model. The roadster appears first, at the Detroit auto show next January; the coupe’s premiere comes at Frankfurt in September 2005.

Mirroring changes to the next 911 due in September, the Boxster’s exterior is subtly redesigned with oval headlights, separate turn indicators and new angular taillights. Bodywork is more muscular and 911 Turbo-style ducts are adopted up front to feed the front-mounted radiator. The engine is cooled by enlarged air ducts extending farther down the side of the body than on today’s model and dissected by four louvers to channel the air backward in a more efficient manner.

Other exterior changes include the door-handle pulls (vs. the current flap style) and a slightly wider rear spoiler to increase downforce at speeds above 75 mph.

Power for the revamped Boxster comes from two lightly reworked horizontally opposed engines—the existing 2.7-liter and 3.2-liter units each gaining around 10 hp and a considerable boost in low-end torque. An optional six-speed Tiptronic with steering wheel-mounted shift buttons will join a carryover six-speed manual. The double-clutch unit coming on the new 911 should be offered later on the Boxster, according to Porsche insiders.

The new Boxster rides on similar underpinnings to today’s eight-year-old model, but its MacPherson strut suspension hardware uses lighter components and a wider track for greater responsiveness and grip. The car also gets lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels—as seen on this prototype—to reduce unsprung weight.

The differences are very subtle. It looks good to me, but I think it takes a car pro to recoginze the differences. Most people won't pick up on them.

2nd generation? that's the same damn car

Yeah, whats so new?

Big deal they put gills on the intakes, and changed the exhaust pipes and other minor things.

It looks like a refresh. 8 years and seeing thousands of themon the road my eyes want to see something totally new with the exterior.

'05 Porsche Boxster

Here's the first pic of an undisguised 05 Porsche Boxster. Apparently it was being used to film a commercial.

While it may not be a huge change, the headlights are a huge improvement IMO.

DEVO 07-08-2004 08:50 AM

looks good. so does the new 911 front treatment.

jiggaman 07-08-2004 08:55 AM

i love Porsche. Definately love to get one in the future.

biker 07-08-2004 09:00 AM

Like the new 911 you have to really know your subject to notice the differences between models.

ABP-CL9-TSX 07-08-2004 09:19 AM

I never really liked the frog eyed headlights on the Boxster and 911....its good to see Porsche use the circular lights again.

TdotSSTSX 07-08-2004 09:22 AM

That looks sweet, kind of: Porsche Carrera GT' esque...

xizor 07-08-2004 09:48 AM

The pics in autoweek look like a Toyota MR2 :dunno:, can't say I ever liked the Boxster

Helicobacter Pylori 07-08-2004 09:51 AM

Sweet. I love it.

TSX 'R' US 07-08-2004 12:11 PM

I like the headlights on those better than the current boxter..

leftride 07-08-2004 12:14 PM

911 fan: yes...boxter fan: not really.

Hmm. It's almost back to the 993 generation. I don't know... I guess at least it's a little less confusing with the 911s

Junkster 07-08-2004 05:28 PM

If the boxsters would somehow rekindle the lines of the old Speedster, I would be sold... but the designs just don't seem very clear cut on the car.

The 993, that was my fave Porsche of all time... the 996 seems to have gain too much in size.

Junkster, who second fave is the Speedster

Porsche Boxster Coupe Spied

These latest shots of the Boxster coupe reveal a tauter tail and roofline, with large rear glass and roadster-like fenders to help distance the entry-level mid-engined Porsche from its iconic rear-engined big brother, the 911. The coupe debuts at the Frankfurt motor show in 2005, following the roadster’s world premiere in Detroit next January.

Me likey!

That flowing roofline is sweet.

jcg878 08-04-2004 09:52 AM

that will sell very well, methinks

Helicobacter Pylori 08-04-2004 10:43 AM

Wow, I like it too. Look at the flowing coming down from the roof and merging with the raising rear fender. Sweet although the exhaust still looks like a butt hole

TSX Hokie 08-04-2004 02:39 PM

BMW could learn alot from Porsche's design philosophy. Keep it simple. Almost every Porsche ever made looks like a 'classic', with a few exceptions during the 80s.

A truly beautiful car doesn't need 'flame surfacing' to stand out.
