If the new Astra looks like that it will do very well. Especially as a Saturn.

From Worldcarfans...

Opel's upcoming 2010 Astra has been unofficially revealed thanks to German publication Auto Motor und Sport.

Exterior styling is heavily influenced by the Opel Insignia which gives the new Astra a far more premium and substantial appearance than the outgoing model. While the low hood and resulting odd frontal appearance will likely draw criticism, this design was required to meet Europe's pedestrian crash safety laws.

The base engine will be a 1.4-liter naturally aspirated petrol unit that produces 90 horsepower, emits less then 120 grams of CO2 per kilometer, and features stop/start technology. For drivers wanting more performance, a supercharged version of this engine will be available and it will crank out 180 horsepower. On the diesel side, we can expect a 1.7-liter turbocharged engine to offer 110 horsepower.

Although technical specifications are still rather sketchy, it appears that the Astra will grow 15cm in length, feature optional all-wheel drive, and adopt the Insignia's adaptive damping system. Among the other items included on the new Astra are an electric parking brake, adaptive lighting, and a park assistant system.

As with the current Astra, several different versions will be available. There isn't too much information about them, but it appears the Astra Sport Tourer will be at least 20 cm longer than the standard car while the Astra GTC will likely adopt a six-cylinder engine.

More information should become available as the car inches closer to its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, so stay tuned for more details.

Opel has really solid cars. It's a wonder the US arm of GM hasn't just taken all of the Opel offerings and put them in Saturn dealers. Then the brand would be pretty good. No need for Pontiac or Chevy. Just add the G8 and the Corvette, and the rest can go away. Oh, maybe Buick too.

Another thing, if this is brought to the US, GM will fuck up the look. Because, "American tastes in cars are different than European's". Some PR dipshit will say it. I just know it.

They are going to do that with Buick now apparently since they are going to sell/kill Saturn.

GM needs to get rid of the "sell the same car as five brands" mentality.

Why the hell they think a Chevy Aveo AND a Pontiac G3 are necessary is beyond me.

If the dealer contracts are too onerous then just go into Chap 11 and tear them up already.

GM of N.A. should look like this:

Chevrolet - ALL Trucks/SUVs and value-minded cars (FWD and RWD)

Buick - Rebranded Opels and luxo FWDs

Cadillac - Modern Art & Science Styling and RWD luxury (they can keep the Escalade since they sell enough to justify a separate model from the Tahoe/Suburban)

Corvette - It's time to make it it's own brand. No one calls it a Chevy Corvette. It's just a Corvette. If it has to stay Chevy, fine, but it needs to be sold in a different dealer model ...

Dealer network:

Chevy dealers would sell only the cars and trucks branded as Chevys but could service legacy GMC and Pontiac products.

Buick/Cadillac/Corvette - New dealer model that puts emphasis on Lexus/BMW type experience at their dealers. All three brands (and Corvette is a brand) attract customers with more education (schooling) and generally higher incomes than the Chevy dealers. Corvette fits in nicely here as the CTS-V techs could also service Corvettes and Vette owners would get a much better dealership/service experience at a dealer selling $35-100k vehicles (Vette ZR-1) than a Chevy dealer that sells trucks and $12k Aveos.

Sell - Saturn and Saab. Kill - Pontiac and GMC because they are superfluous.

In this model, the new Opel Astra becomes a Chevrolet as I don't think it would work as a Buick.

Interior looks great! The two-tone seats are cool, but that red on the dash looks pretty cheesy. I'm still undecided on the exterior....it looks too much like an Impreza.

The red is an Opel, the black is a Vauxhall. I like the Vaux better.

the red interior is hot. the black with the shiny black plastic is the exact reason why I hated GM interiors: same quality of cheap plastics used throughout. Looks like a step backwards.

There's no reason that Penske couldn't make some sort of arrangement with Opel.

The deal would have to be with Magna - Opel's new owners. The thing we don't know is the details of the sale prohibiting sale of Opels in NA. Would rebadges be allowed? Tough to tell at this point.

Opel Astra GTC concept revealed

Autocar

Vauxhall will use this rakish Paris motor show concept to preview the new three-door Astra, due next year, and the high-performance VXR variant that will arrive at the same time.

Revealed this morning, the GTC Paris Concept is ostensibly a show car. But Vauxhall says the design “gives the strongest hint yet to the Astra Sport Hatch’s successor”.

The firm has also suggested that the eventual production model will carry the GTC monicker, the first time it will have been used on a Vauxhall.

Styled under the direction of GM Europe’s British-born design chief, Mark Adams, the GTC concept mixes styling cues from across the firm’s model range.

In particular, the ‘blade’ surfacing on the car’s flanks is reversed from the five-door Astra’s, leading from the front door instead — in a manner used on the Insignia — to create a subtle, integrated side skirt. A second crease runs from the front edge of the door handles to the rear lights.

The front styling cues include a sharp crease down the centre of the bonnet — a feature from Vauxhalls of old, the firm claims — and headlights that sweep back into the front wings.

The rear gets LED tail-lights in a “flying wing” motif and a subtle spoiler at the top of a hatch that has a complex shutline.

The car is 4.46 metres long, around 4cm longer than the five-door — although the prominent, arched roofline and shallow rear glass area disguise this.

While its roof is clearly lower than the five-door Astra’s, Vauxhall claims the car still offers “ample space for five people”.

A VXR version is due to arrive at the same time as the bread-and-butter models. It’s likely to get a hefty increase in power over the outgoing car — perhaps to as much as 300bhp — and feature an electronic limited-slip differential, similar to the item already fitted to the GTC.

The VXR is likely to be the production model that uses most of the show car’s design flourishes. While the concept’s 21in wheels are likely to reduce in size for the hot three-door, its side window chrome embellishments and LED running lights may stay.

The concept has a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with stop-start and a six-speed manual transmission. Its chassis set-up includes an updated version of Vauxhall’s Flexride adaptive damper system, and the same torsion beam rear suspension as the regular Astra.

Despite production-ready looks, the concept is appearing more than a year before the three-door Astra is due on sale in the UK late next year.
