The 2021 Nissan Rogue gets a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's FuelEconomy.gov site. Nissan isn't releasing much info about the new powertrain yet.

"Nissan regularly evaluates potential future technologies on existing models. We are planning a small pilot program with a potential new powertrain, utilizing the 2021 Nissan Rogue. We have nothing further to announce at this time," Nissan spokesperson Josh Clifton told Motor1.com.

Nissan didn't respond to additional questions about when this pilot program begins or who is going to be taking part in it.

According to the listing, the 1.5-liter engine is available throughout the Rogue lineup, including the range-topping Platinum grade. Buyers can get it with front- or all-wheel drive, and the listing suggests all of them get an eight-speed automatic. There are no details yet about the powertrain output.

The EPA filing shows that the base grade of the 1.5-liter Rogue getting 30 miles per gallon city, 37 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive version. The all-wheel-drive layout has nearly the same numbers at 30 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined.

The SL and Platinum grades have slightly different stats. With front-wheel drive, they get 30 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive variant does 29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.

The Rogue is currently only available with a naturally aspirated, 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque that runs through a CVT. At its best, the model gets 30 mpg combined, and the least fuel-efficient model does 28 mpg combined.

In 2020, the Rogue was Nissan's highest-volume product in the US. The company delivered 227,935 of them, which was almost 28 percent of the entire brand's 819,715 units for the year. Given how important the model is to the automaker, it makes sense to experiment with ways of making the Rogue even more popular.

Usually when an all-new model launches, it'll be a few years before it sees any new updates. After all, if you just changed everything, why would you mess with it even more right away? But sometimes the development of cars and their engines do not align, which is why last year's otherwise all-new Rogue debuted with only a mildly updated version of the last-gen engine. It's also why the 2022 Nissan Rogue, which otherwise carries over unchanged, welcomes an all-new standard engine under its hood. And yes, standard engine, not another option. The good news is, it's a good engine, and makes the Rogue even better than before.

So what is this new engine? Instead of the outgoing naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder, the 2022 Rogue gets a turbocharged, variable-compression 1.5-liter three-cylinder. It has the same adjusting compression ratio system that's been used on the turbo four-cylinder introduced in the Infiniti QX50 and offered in the Nissan Altima. In fact, it's basically that engine, but with one fewer cylinder. It also gets some detail upgrades such as roller-bearing camshafts and textured valve lifters for reduced friction in the engine (the textured surface holds more oil), plus an updated CVT with lower and higher ratios, and various friction improvements.

The result of all these changes is a more powerful and efficient SUV. The new model makes 20 more horsepower at 201, and 44 more pound-feet of torque at 225 – profound upgrades that take the Rogue from one of the weaker entries in its segment to one of the strongest. Fuel economy will improve, too. Final numbers aren't in, but Nissan is estimating 33 mpg combined versus the current model's best of 30 mpg. It's a win-win.

And the good news is that the improvements are noticeable behind the wheel, not just on paper. One of the big surprises is that the engine actually sounds smoother than the four-cylinder from which it's derived. Power delivery is mighty smooth, too. The turbo spools up fast and gives you easy-to-use down-low torque. As such, it'll zip from light to light confidently, and with low revs for a quiet experience.

Like many other small turbo engines, the tradeoff is that the Rogue's three-cylinder feels like it falls flat when it revs out. When heading up an on-ramp, it takes off strong, but loses some steam toward the top after you've passed the huge lump of early torque. It's ironic considering peak power does come close to the 6,000-rpm redline. When pushing the engine hard, it gets a little buzzy, but no rougher.

As for the CVT, it's still not particularly impressive, but does the job fine. It's programmed to act like a conventional automatic transmission, and ratio changes are silky. It doesn't react quickly, though, such as when you ask for a kick-down for passing or hitting an onramp.

The rest of the 2022 Nissan Rogue is unchanged, since again, it was completely new last year. You can get more detail on the interior, ride and handling in our full Rogue review. But to sum up, the Rogue has a vastly improved interior that's very upscale on higher trims. It's smaller on the outside, but larger on the inside, and it has very comfortable seats. It's not particularly fun to drive, but it's a vast dynamic improvement over its depressing predecessor and also comfortable enough to cruise in.

Another perk of the 2022 Rogue is that the price barely increases over last year. Base price for the Rogue S with front-wheel drive is $27,875, an increase of $650. Add all-wheel drive, and the base price is $29,375. That's $750 more than the outgoing one.

So after vastly improving the Nissan Rogue with the redesign last year, Nissan has made it better yet for its second year on the market. We're not quite ready to call it a segment leader, but it's definitely worth your consideration for its spunky engine, impressive fuel economy and stylish cabin.

That interior actually looks pretty good for a Nissan. If it wasn't for the crappy CVT that Nissan uses, other makes do it much better, it would probably be a win in my book.

VCT with a CVT in a CUV

My boss' wife loves her Rogue & my brother-in-law's wife has one too.

I'm just not a fan of Nissan products in general, outside of the Z & GTR, neither of which are likely to be in my driveway.

I'd forgotten about the new angular face.
Prefer the prior model, aesthetically, but would buy a CX-5 instead.

This thing with it's blown three banger has the same HP and torque as a "performance" Civic Si. Ponder that for a moment.

Nissan continues to enhance its best-selling crossover and reinforce the company's commitment to bringing the latest technology to its most popular vehicles. The 2024 Nissan Rogue receives a bold exterior refresh and significant available technology upgrades to make every trip more convenient and better connected. Building on its strong core of family-friendly design, flexible storage space and an efficient turbocharged powertrain, the 2024 Rogue becomes even more attractive.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue goes on sale at U.S. dealerships in early 2024.

The first Nissan to come with Google built-in

With class-exclusive Google built-in, the Nissan Rogue SL and Platinum take the next step in bringing always-on connectivity to the vehicle. Using a 12.3-inch HD color touchscreen, the new infotainment system seamlessly integrates well-known Google apps - including Google Assistant, Google Maps and more on Google Play - right into Rogue's dashboard.

With Google built-in integrated directly into the vehicle, all these features can be used without pairing or plugging in a phone. They also allow a more seamless use of existing Google Account information: for instance, addresses or points-of-interest saved on the Google Maps website or mobile app (when signed in) can easily be selected in Rogue's touchscreen for use as a navigation destination.

Users will be able to talk to Google Assistant to navigate to their next destination, easily call or text a friend, or listen to music.

iPhone users will still be able to use standard Apple CarPlay® (wired on S/SV, wireless on SL/Platinum), while Android™ users can also elect to use Android Auto™ (wired on S/SV, wireless on SL/Platinum) - ensuring drivers can always choose the connectivity functions they're most comfortable using.

Nissan Rogue S and SV offer the intuitive connectivity of an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™, with AM/FM and SiriusXM®.

Sleek, freshened design

Nissan Rogue's makeover further streamlines the crossover's appealing design, with new front and rear fascias, a new version of Nissan's V-motion grille, new inner taillights and satin-finish exterior badges. Rogue SV features a new 18-inch alloy wheel design. New colors and textures for the door panels, seats, center console and passenger-side dashboard trim freshen the cabin's appearance. Bringing more value to the well-equipped model, a wireless device charging pad, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster are newly standard on SL grade.

Designers also further enhanced the premium look and feel of Rogue Platinum. Gloss-black fender, lower exterior and front fascia trim pieces, plus a new 19-inch wheel design, lend Rogue a more premium exterior appearance, while the new available Chestnut brown leather upholstery has a richer, darker color.

A flattering new color palette includes a striking Everest White Pearl, Deep Ocean Blue Pearl, Baja Storm and several two-tone configurations with a black roof.

Rogue SL, Platinum elevate entertainment

Rogue SL and Platinum grades also feature several additional advanced technologies:
  • Amazon Alexa® Built-in helps customers simplify and organize their lives. Alexa can play music, place calls, listen to audiobooks, control smart home devices, and more, with just voice commands. Both systems work hand-in-hand to provide a seamless, tailored user experience, whether during a daily commute or weekend trip.
  • Hybrid Radio uses data to supplement standard FM radio signals, so drivers can continue listening to their favorite local radio station even outside its signal area, or in areas with degraded reception such as parking garages. It displays song lyrics and album art.
  • SiriusXM's newest and most advanced audio entertainment platform: SiriusXM with 360L. SiriusXM with 360L combines satellite and streaming delivery to offer more channels, Pandora stations and a more personalized listening experience, thousands of hours of on-demand content and more.
Accessible charging and enhanced telematics

Two front USB Type-C ports are standard on Rogue S, with SV and higher adding two charge-only ports on the rear of the center console. Rogue is the first Nissan in the U.S. to exclusively feature USB Type-C ports, helping enable faster charging. Rogue SL and Platinum offer further charging flexibility with a standard wireless device charging pad mounted ahead of the shifter and cup holders.

For 2024, available NissanConnect® Services now includes a three-year trial (up from a six-month trial previously). The telematics feature is standard on SV grade and higher, and works with the MyNISSAN smartphone app. On equipped vehicles, features include remote door lock/unlock, remote engine start/stop, vehicle health report and emergency calling.

Launching with Rogue, an enhanced version of the MyNISSAN app adds the ability for drivers to set climate control, heated seat and heated steering wheel (if equipped) settings when using remote start. Vehicle owners can also create additional profiles in the app for other vehicle users to access MyNISSAN functions.

Reassurance of safety technology and drive assistance

Rogue's commitment to driver peace of mind begins with standard Nissan Safety Shield® 360 on all grades. It includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist and Rear Automatic Braking.

Nissan Rogue SV features ProPILOT Assist, combining Intelligent Cruise Control with Steering Assist for more confident highway driving. The system uses a forward-facing camera, forward-facing radar and other sensors to help keep Rogue centered within its lane. In stop-and-go traffic, ProPILOT Assist can even bring the vehicle down to a complete stop and hold it in place until traffic moves again.

Rogue SL and Platinum feature ProPILOT Assist with Navi-Link, which uses data from the vehicle's navigation system to help proactively adjust Rogue's speed ahead of curves and freeway exits, based on data about the vehicle's planned route.

Advanced, efficient turbo engine

Delivering an impressive balance of performance and fuel efficiency, Rogue features a standard 1.5-liter Variable Compression Turbo (VC-Turbo) engine paired with a smooth, responsive Xtronic CVT.

The VC-Turbo engine continuously adjusts its compression ratio to seamlessly optimize power or efficiency, depending on driver demand. The engine is rated for 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Standard Idle Stop/Start shuts off the engine when the vehicle is stationary to help save fuel.

Flexible, functional storage

The 2024 Nissan Rogue easily accommodates everyday life with ample cargo space and thoughtful storage solutions. A pass-through storage space below the center console, for instance, is ideal for stashing smaller items, while the center console's "butterfly-style" lid opening makes it easier to pass items between the first and second rows.

The second row of seats has a 60/40 split-fold and recline function, allowing owners to optimize for passenger or cargo space as needed. Up to 36.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row accommodates luggage and belongings, with space expanding to as much as 74.1 cubic feet with the second row folded. Access to the cargo area is simplified thanks to the available power liftgate (standard, SV and higher), with a motion-activated power liftgate optional on SL and Platinum grades.

The available Divide-N-Hide® system provides hidden and secure storage for small items below the trunk floor, while also allowing owners to select between a fully flat load floor or a lower floor position for increased load height. And Rogue's cargo area even has a molded-in space on the inner right side (behind the wheel arch) to securely hold items like grocery bags or a milk jug.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue lineup consists of four feature-packed grades - S, SV, SL and Platinum - each of which is available with front- or all-wheel drive.

The 2025 Nissan Rogue is ready for even more adventure both on and off the open highway, with a new rugged Rock Creek edition and the introduction of ProPILOT Assist 2.1 driver assistance technology. These further enhancements to Nissan's popular SUV follow a stunning visual refresh for Rogue and the addition of Google built-in for the 2024 model year.

Go beyond with Rogue Rock Creek

Rogue's new Rock Creek edition caters to drivers whose lifestyles take them beyond the crowds, with striking design and additional capability for journeys that finish past the end of the pavement.

It makes a bold splash with a unique gloss black front grille featuring silver accents, a redesigned front fascia featuring Lava Red accents, gloss black sideview mirrors and a tubular roof rack with integrated cross bars also accented in Lava Red. Contributing to both appearance and capability, Rock Creek rolls on 235/65R17 Falken Wild Peak all-terrain tires fitted to 17-inch satin black wheels. Interior enhancements include water-repellent leatherette seating with unique inserts, Lava Red accent stitching and piano black dashboard trim.

Rogue Rock Creek also adds heated front seats and a 12-volt power outlet in the cargo area, and its HD Intelligent Around View® Monitor adds an Off-Road View that can operate while driving at speeds up to 12 mph, an invaluable tool for spotting obstacles when maneuvering. Its standard Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system is supplemented by Hill Descent Control, helping drivers maintain a steady speed when going down steep inclines.

An available premium package adds a touch of luxury to the adventurous spirit of Rogue Rock Creek, with a wireless charging pad, heated steering wheel, four-way power passenger seat, motion-activated power liftgate, memory driver's seat and outside mirrors, reverse tilt-down outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, auto dimming rearview mirror and interior LED accent lighting.

Rogue Rock Creek is available in four color options: Everest White, Super Black, Boulder Gray and Baja Storm.

Go hands-off with ProPILOT Assist 2.1

The 2025 Rogue is the latest vehicle in the Nissan U.S. lineup with available ProPILOT Assist 2.1, which utilizes Google built-in and builds on the company's goal of making its most advanced mobility technology accessible on its popular models. Optional on Rogue SL and Platinum, the system allows attentive drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel in single-lane freeway operation, while ProPILOT Assist 2.1 can handle acceleration, steering assistance and braking.

Rogue also offers two other levels of driver assistance: ProPILOT Assist is standard on SV and Rock Creek grades, combining Intelligent Cruise Control with Steering Assist. On SL and Platinum, ProPILOT Assist 1.1 enhances the experience by using navigation information to help proactively adjust Rogue's speed ahead of curves and freeway interchanges.

Go confidently with advanced technology

The 2025 Nissan Rogue SL and Platinum add a more advanced version of the vehicle's Intelligent Around View Monitor this year. The 3D Intelligent Around View Monitor features 3D rotation around the vehicle, allowing drivers even more vantage points from which to see what's near their Rogue. It's highly convenient for avoiding obstacles when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces.

On the available Technology Package, the system also adds two additional camera angles: Front Wide View, which provides a 176-degree view, ideal for "seeing around" pillars in garages or parked cars on the street; and Invisible Hood View, a first for Nissan in the U.S. market, which uses advanced image processing to take footage from the vehicle's exterior cameras to project a view of the roadway under the engine bay to help with avoiding curbs, placing the vehicle's wheels in a car wash track and other tricky situations.

All Rogue grades include standard Nissan Safety Shield® 360, which includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist and Rear Automatic Braking.

Other standard convenience technologies on Rogue include Rear Door Alert, which can alert drivers to items forgotten in the back seat, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert, which makes topping up tire air pressures simpler.

For entertainment and information along the way, Rogue S, SV and Rock Creek feature an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, and SiriusXM® Radio. Rogue SL and Platinum upgrade to a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, seamlessly integrating well-known Google apps - including Google Assistant, Google Maps and more on Google Play - right into Rogue's dashboard. SL and Platinum also have wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and a wireless charging pad.

Go farther with powerful efficiency

All Rogue grades feature a standard 1.5-liter Variable Compression Turbo (VC-Turbo) engine, which continuously adjusts its compression ratio to seamlessly optimize power or efficiency, depending on driver demand. The engine is rated for 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Contributing to best-in-class gas engine fuel economy, standard Idle Stop/Start shuts off the engine when the vehicle is stationary to help save fuel. The engine is paired with an Xtronic CVT.

Other than price, I can't imagine why I'd buy this over a CRV or CX5/50, even a Rav4.

My brother in law's wife got a new Pathfinder, to replace a nickel & dime Rogue [older, prior curvier body style].
I've only driven it as far as moving it out of the way in my driveway & didn't care for it that far
Took me a minute to figure out how to get reverse
