Finally more aggressive and a much better interior. Black insides would make it even more so.

Still not a fan of how tank-sized the car is, the Celica headlights, and the bulbous looking hood/front end

I was afraid what they would do with the front and all with the new Maxima grill but it actually looks good. Black chrome though would look better than the chrome on it now.

My understanding is that Nissan hasn't even started on the development of the R36....so 2020 is probably right?

I think with the release of the new NSX Nissan may want time to study it so as to be competitive with that car with the R36

Honestly doubt that. Even the '90 GTR can bitch slap a 1G NSX. And they only got more crazy after that. An R34 vs NSX would be the equivalent of a no-lube, butt fuck. They've always been touted as the cheap in comparison, NSX slayer, over in Japan. But of course, the NSX had the sex appeal.

2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO

Press release...

The new 2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO today made its world debut at the famous Nürburgring race course, known as one of the longest and most challenging race tracks in the world. This is also the place where the Nissan GT-R's potent performance was honed, tuned and developed.

Like the GT-R Premium, the GT-R NISMO's front end features a freshened face highlighted by an aggressive new fascia. To help cool the car's high-output engine, the dark chrome "V-motion" grille has been enlarged to collect more air, without diminishing the car's aerodynamic performance. A new significantly reinforced hood avoids deformation at extremely high speeds, allowing it to keep its aerodynamic shape. Unlike the standard model, the front bumper of the GT-R NISMO – crafted with Takumi-like precision – feature layers of carbon-fiber sheets carefully overlapped to achieve the ideal amount of stiffness. The canards have been designed to improve airflow around the vehicle and generate a high level of downforce, while at the same time, direct air around the wheelhouse to enhance aerodynamics. Overall, the car's new shape generates more downforce than any other Nissan production car to date, resulting in exceptional high-speed stability.

The new GT-R NISMO also benefits from the 2017 GT-R's refreshed interior, whose cabin possesses a more upscale feel than ever before. The redesigned dashboard and steering wheel are covered with high-quality Alcantara® suede. The center stack layout has been improved and simplified, with the number of integrated navigation and audio controls reduced from 27 switches in the previous model to only 11 in the 2017 version. An enlarged 8-inch touch-panel monitor featuring large icons on the display screen make it simple to use, while a new Display Command control on the carbon fiber center console allows easy operation without having to touch the monitor. Unique to GT-R NISMO are the leather-appointed Recaro® seats with red synthetic suede inserts.

The performance of the all-wheel-drive GT-R NISMO has also been upgraded, thanks in part to the standard model's significantly reinforced body. The stiffened body structure allowed the engineers to further refine the GT-R NISMO's shock absorbers, springs and stabilizers, all of which, when combined with the car's added downforce, result in a better handling car than the previous model. This is evidenced by the car's improved slalom times and superior cornering performance (both up by nearly two percent from the previous model). The GT-R's special Bilstein® DampTronic driver-adjustable system – which utilizes multiple vehicle inputs to provide appropriate damping forces and high level of control for a variety of driving situations – features a special NISMO-tuned shock absorber that more effectively transfers the power of the twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6, which still produces 600 horsepower, to the road surface.

Dubbed the "VR38DETT," the GT-R NISMO's engine is the result of the expertise that NISMO has gained from competing in motorsports events around the globe. Mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, it features a pair of high-flow, large diameter turbochargers used in GT3 competition. As with the standard model, each GT-R NISMO engine is hand-assembled from beginning to end in a special clean room by meticulously trained technicians, with an aluminum plate added to the front of each engine showing the name of the Takumi engine craftsman.

Despite its more potent nature, the new GT-R NISMO boasts better overall balance than before, evolving into a car that can be enjoyed on a winding mountain road, as well as on the local race circuit.

"The GT-R NISMO emphasizes the 'R' in its nomenclature. Its direct ties with racing make it at home on any racetrack, providing the highest levels of excitement and exhilaration for the driver. With the 2017 GT-R as a starting point, the new NISMO version has become a more well-balanced machine, with not just increased performance, but a heightened premium feel overall. It is the result of our ongoing pursuit of ultimate driving pleasure," said Hiroshi Tamura, Chief Product Specialist, GT-R.

The 2017 Nissan GT-R NISMO will be available in four exterior colors. It is assembled in Tochigi, Japan, with the engines hand-assembled in Yokohama, Japan.

I was at a local Nissan dealership just last week and they had a silver GTR Nismo in the show room. Oh. My. God.

The carbon fibre work on this car is something else... the fitment was absolutely spot on at every angle, corner, line. The weave pattern was flawless also. Soooo beautiful.

Of course, they start at $189,000, up here in the frozen north. Not sure what the one in the showroom was going for. I was too scared to ask!

Post Nissan GT-R Track Edition

Press release...

Among Nissan GT-R enthusiasts, 2017 is turning out to be a milestone year. The model year started with a major makeover for both the GT-R Premium and GT-R NISMO – and caps off with the North American debut of the limited production GT-R Track Edition at the New York International Auto Show. The show runs April 14 - 23 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

As the third model in the GT-R lineup, the Track Edition occupies a unique position between the “T” (touring) and “R” (racing) sides of the GT-R equation. Designed to deliver a higher level of performance than the GT-R Premium, the Track Edition features elements of the flagship GT-R NISMO, though retaining the GT-R Premium model’s 565-horsepower engine rating (versus the GT-R NISMO’s 600-horsepower version). The new GT-R Track Edition has a starting MSRP1 of $127,990 and will be available late summer 2017 by order only at GT-R certified Nissan dealers nationwide.

“The new GT-R Track Edition gives buyers a specialized model, one true to GT-R heritage and available only by special order,” said Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “Building on the major upgrade to every GT-R for 2017, the Track Edition is an amazing package inside, outside and under the skin.”

The new GT-R Track Edition’s performance-oriented features start with the body’s additional adhesive bonding (in addition to spot welding), which helps increase body shell rigidity versus the GT-R Premium model. Next, the advanced 4-wheel independent suspension receives unique NISMO tuning, with reduced weight and additional roll stiffness (versus GT-R Premium), as well as NISMO-spec tires.

Other standard equipment includes GT-R NISMO front fenders, 20-inch NISMO forged aluminum-alloy wheels and a special dry carbon-fiber rear spoiler2. Inside, the Track Edition interior includes a unique red and black color treatment with high-grip, motorsports-inspired Recaro® seats.

About the 2017 Nissan GT-R Track Edition

The 2017 Nissan GT-R Track Edition’s dynamic styling is both attractive and functional. The aggressive front end is dominated by the large Nissan signature “V-motion” grille, which provides enhanced engine cooling (versus the previous GT-R design) and features a matte chrome finish and an updated mesh pattern. The reinforced hood helps enhance stability during high speed driving. The use of adhesive bonding (in addition to spot welding) helps increase body shell rigidity for mounting of the NISMO-tuned suspension.

The GT-R Track Edition’s sporty red and black interior features standard leather-appointed Recaro® front bucket seats. The simplified switch layout includes just 11 switches, along with an 8-inch capacitive touch panel monitor. The standard steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters allow drivers to make mid-turn gear changes without taking their hands off the wheel.

The GT-R Track Edition also includes standard NissanConnectSM with Navigation, Mobile Apps and Services, which allows users to use a smartphone to remotely lock or unlock the car doors, activate the alarm, summon emergency services or track the car if it is stolen (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately). Also standard is a RearView Monitor.

Like the 2017 GT-R Premium, the GT-R Track Edition offers a 565 horsepower hand-assembled twin-turbo VR38DETT 3.8-liter V6 engine. Torque is rated at 467 lb-ft. A Titanium exhaust system is standard. All GT-R engines are hand-assembled from beginning to end in a special clean room by specially trained technicians known as Takumi, a process similar to racing powerplant construction. An aluminum plate is added to the front of each engine showing the name of the Takumi engine craftsman.

The standard Bose® audio sound system includes Active Noise Cancellation and Active Sound Enhancement technologies to filter out unwanted noise and retain excitement during spirited driving. Acoustic glass and targeted sound dampening help reduce the intrusion of wind and road noise into the GT-R Track Edition cabin.

The 2017 GT-R Track Edition’s refined powerplant is backed by an advanced paddle-shifted sequential 6-speed dual clutch transmission, which can be driver selected to shift at race car-like speeds. High performance differential oil, used in GT-R motorsports competition, is standard.

All 2017 Nissan GT-Rs are built on an exclusive Premium Midship platform, which enables the use of the unique independent rear transaxle ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system. This system places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, optimizing weight distribution and maximizing handling capability.

Few vehicles in the world can be instantly identified by just three letters. But to motoring enthusiasts everywhere, "GT-R" has become synonymous with excitement, high performance and unparalleled refinement.

Making its debut at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the 2020 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition takes the nameplate to a level that was unimaginable when it was first introduced 50 years ago. To celebrate the half-century of the GT-R, engineers challenged themselves to find undiscovered performance potential while still making sure the car can be enjoyed by drivers at any level.

"A GT-R is about total balance management," said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the GT-R. "It is not about chasing a power figures, but creating a new GT-R, where no aspect has been overlooked. This is appropriate to celebrate the GT-R 50th anniversary."

A 50th Anniversary Celebration

The 2020 Nissan GT-R will come in three trim levels in most markets: GT-R Premium, GT-R Track Edition and GT-R NISMO. In select regions, there will also be the Pure, Prestige and Black models, but it is the 50th Anniversary Edition that truly celebrates the GT-R's rich heritage.

The special edition car will come in three heritage-era, two-tone exterior color combinations meant to represent the GT-R's liveries from the Japan GP series - of which the original GT-R was born to dominate in. Retired since the GT-R "R34" model, Bayside (Wangan) Blue makes a return, complete with white racing stripes. A four-coat, double-heat treatment process ensures a vivid blue with striking highlights and deep shadows. Blue accents on the wheel spokes are among several fine touches made to celebrate the GT-R's milestone. Pearl White with red stripes and Super Silver with white stripes round out the 50th Anniversary liveries.

Inside the 50th Anniversary Edition is a special gray interior color scheme, which gives the cabin a sense of luxury, reminiscent of the atmosphere of the night sky after the twilight hour (the color is also available on select other 2020 GT-R models). Additional 50th anniversary features include unique steering wheel and shift knob trim, special embossed seats, an Alcantara® headliner with unique stitching, Alcantara®-wrapped sunvisors, and more.

"The Nissan GT-R has been the icon of our company's driving performance for the past half century," said Shinichiro Irie, program design director for the GT-R. "We were highly motivated to ensure that the GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition stands out. While the exterior and interior changes may seem subtle at first glance, they're still impactful, especially with the new paint schemes, keeping the car's lines and overall presence modern and edgy."

https://www.netcarshow.com/nissan/2020-gt-r_nismo/

The 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO made its world debut, with race car-inspired upgrades and tuning improvements that maximize its exhilarating performance.

The model was showcased alongside the new 50th Anniversary Edition as Nissan celebrated 50 years of GT-R heritage at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.

"The 2020 GT-R NISMO has evolved into a balanced, yet extreme, performance car," said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the GT-R. "Pursuing driving pleasure is the most important concept behind GT-R, and the new NISMO's performance suggest it is a car that belongs on the race track - but is also at home on the open road."

Designed for a pro, built for everyone

For the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO, Nissan engineers set out to take race-proven technology and make it accessible and comfortable for drivers of all skill levels. Vehicle control and predictability were critical in achieving this; thus, they adopted the theme "absolute street and track performance" when developing the car.

Setting the most potent and exclusive of all GT-Rs apart from the rest of the pack is the amount of carbon fiber found throughout the car, including the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, hood, roof, side sill covers, trunk and rear spoiler. Each component has been improved to cut weight, increase downforce and enhance aerodynamics. These exterior parts alone have resulted in a total weight savings of 23 pounds (10.5 kilograms), in addition to nearly 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of reductions from other upgrades and new components.

The front fenders now resemble those on the GT3 GT-R. Scalloped vents help funnel hot air away from the engine bay and provide exceptional downforce onto the front tires, without additional drag. They also improve aerodynamics by smoothing out airflow along the body, with special consideration given to avoiding the rear spoiler, promoting high-speed stability. A new compression process gives the carbon fiber roof a lightweight, tight weave.

The 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO's exclusive 20-inch RAYS forged aluminum wheels are lighter than before and incorporate a nine-spoke design that enhances their rigidity. Newly designed Dunlop tires, with a wider tread and fewer grooves, increase the contact patch by 11%. This results in higher cornering force, enhanced steering response and improved rolling resistance when compared with the previous model.

Inside the cabin, exclusive GT-R NISMO front seats are designed to focus on holding the shoulder blades and lower body points, giving the driver a better sense of car and body as one.

Adding electrification will increase both its weight and price.

If you want to know what's happening with the next-generation Nissan GT-R, you may as well ask a random person on the street because Nissan keeps putting out conflicting statements. We still have no idea when the R36 GT-R will arrive but early indications suggest that when it does, it will come with some form of electrification. After driving the Acura NSX, we would not object to a hybrid GT-R but some GT-R diehards won't be so easy to convince.

Now Nissan may be backtracking on its statements about a hybrid GT-R, according to a recent interview. Speaking with Motor1, GT-R specialist Hiroshi Tamura said Nissan is still undecided on whether to invest in a new platform with electrification or simply offer a reskinned version of the current car - which has been on sale since 2008.
When talking about whether people would actually want a hybrid GT-R, Tamura asked, "do [our customers] really, really want a hybrid for the GT-R? Ninety-nine percent of our customers say, 'no, thanks.'" The recently-revealed 2020 GT-R starts at $101,685 for the Pure trim and tops out at $177,235 for the Nismo model but Tamura says adding a hybrid drivetrain would push the car above the $200,000 price point - which he says is too high.

"Mr. Customer, you have a choice," Tamura said. "You cannot have both." Customers will have to choose between having a faster GT-R than the current one with a price approaching a Lamborghini Huracan, or one that remains in the current price range. Tamura even estimated that a hybrid system would add around 200 kilograms (441 pounds) to the curb weight and at least $10,000 to the price.

While the GT-R still has a cult following, Nissan only sold 538 of them in 2018. Even in its best sales year in 2008, Nissan only moved 1,730 units of the GT-R. This is a niche product by definition, meaning it doesn't make a ton of sense for Nissan to dump money into it. No wonder why we still have no idea what the R36 will look like.

If that is really happening, i am glad they are asking their base on what they want.

Just TT your V8 and you wont need any battery.

If there were more demand, maybe they could offer both for a generation & see what the market really wants. But that's a big $$$ gamble to develop.

Yup... but even i thought the car was way too cheap for what it is when it was first launched...

To be fair, there is about 120hp difference between the 2008 GTR and the $177k 2019 GTR Nismo

Is it worth double the price? probably not, but for a car that is over a decade old.. there are not a lot of cars under $200k even in 2019 can beat GTR in straight or on the track.

The GT-R is still fast as hell but nowadays a lot of $200k super cars are just about as fast, namely AMG GT R, 570S, NSX, 911 Turbo, Corvette ZR1, Audi R8 V10+.

I feel like the GT-R is all about performance with brute force. It's not the most comfortable super car and it probably has the worst interior. It's great to be fast but it doesn't seem like it would make for a good daily driver. This is something the 911 Turbo is really good at..it's super fast but also nice inside with decent ride comfort. The same can be said about the R8 and nsx. To me it's more impressive to make a car very fast while being comfortable.
