Man, this car is too far away from production. I want to see/drive one now! I wonder how the Nissan dealerships are going to act when this car comes out. I wonder if they will be cool about you driving this car (like the Chevy dealership and the corvette) or will they have a cow (like I experienced at an Acura dealership with an NSX)

I didn't even think about that! Could you imagine barreling down the expressway at 150 MPH in a prototype of a $70K car whole sucking on a chicken bone? Some guys have all the fun!

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R on the track
By Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor Email | Blog

Our hunt for the latest on the 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R continues. Nissan's engineering crew headed north after a brief stint on the streets of L.A., so naturally our road-weary spy shooters followed. The destination for the Nissan Skyline GT-R prototype and its Porsche 911 Turbo chaser was Sears Point Raceway, a roughly 2.5-mile road course that has the odd distinction of hosting one of the two road races on the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule.
According to our shooters, the bulk of the day was reserved for solo hot-lapping with the Skyline GT-R, although Nissan's test-drivers also laid down a handful of laps in the 911 Turbo. Unlike NASCAR, which uses an abbreviated version of the Sears Point road course, Nissan was using the more traditional setup favored by IndyCar and AMA Superbikes. Hand-timed lap numbers showed the two cars circling the track at an almost identical 1:50.00 pace.
Two drivers were seen behind the wheel, although the majority of the laps were completed by a driver we later identified as Toshio Suzuki. A former open-wheel champion in Formula 3, Suzuki also had a brief stint in Formula 1 along with several runs at Le Mans and Daytona. Clearly, Nissan is serious about getting this Skyline dialed in just right.
Suzuki has previous experience with Nissan as one of the main test-drivers during the development of the FM platform that underpins the 350Z. And judging by our video of the Skyline GT-R, Suzuki was pushing the prototype pretty hard. Even with its ultra-sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, the Skyline GT-R was seen hanging its tail out on a few tight turns, the result of a rear-biased power delivery.
Other details uncovered by our shooters include massive drilled brake rotors front and rear and what look like six-piston calipers up front. There were numerous tire changes made throughout the day, and we were able to identify one tire as a Bridgestone Potenza of undetermined specification.
After a full day of testing, Nissan's engineers loaded the Skyline GT-R into their support truck and headed to a local hotel. We're not sure if this is the last of the GT-R's stateside test run, but rest assured: If it comes out of the truck again we'll be there with cameras rolling.

Seems like my Murano will be coming off lease at about the time the GTR hits showrooms. ....the Accord V6 I just picked up can happily go to the wife, while I sport this on weekends.

moves/sounds pretty sweet... sounds like the traction control / handling system(s) are doing a lot of work to keep that beast contained.

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R conquers the Corkscrew at
Laguna Seca

After weeks of chasing the 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R, from the streets of Los Angeles to one test facility and another, it looks like we've hit the end of the road for this GT-R's stint in America.
Following a day of hot-lapping at Sears Point, the Nissan engineering team headed south to Laguna Seca raceway to see how the Skyline GT-R would handle the 2.2-mile road course and its world-famous Corkscrew. The day wrapped up with the Nissan engineers mugging for an official Nissan camera crew, while our unofficial shooters snagged plenty of new spy photos and video.
Although the prototype never shed its front and rear camouflage, we caught the Nissan Skyline with its hood open, giving us the first-ever look at the GT-R's power plant. Close inspection reveals a few notable details about the engine that's expected to generate roughly 450 horsepower. Two short intake plenums with three barely visible runners on each side suggest a V6, as we expected. There's no conclusive evidence that it's Nissan's recently redesigned VQ35HR V6, but the front cover just behind the oil dipstick is consistent with current VQ design.
The placement of the dipstick itself is another tip to this GT-R's configuration. Previous Skylines have integrated the front differential of the all-wheel-drive system into the engine's oil sump. With the dipstick so far forward in the engine compartment, we expect this GT-R will continue to use this configuration.
Any doubts about a twin-turbo setup can be laid to rest as there's plenty of visible plumbing. And those vents in the hood are clearly not there for show. The gold-colored caps of the twin compressor bypass valves are visible on the cast-aluminum intake plumbing. With plumbing running toward the front of the car, it's a safe bet that there's a monster air-to-air intercooler buried in the nose, or maybe even two smaller ones.
We're not sure how it all works, but it does work, as the GT-R consistently lapped quicker around Laguna Seca than its Porsche 911 Turbo companion. According to our hand-timed data, the GT-R's fastest lap proved to be a 1:39.62, while the 911 recorded a 1:39.89. Put Walter Rohl behind the wheel of the 911 and it might be a different story, but the GT-R clearly has the kind of power and grip to match up against the best sports cars in the world.
As the day wrapped up, it was clear that Nissan's team was headed home for good. The engineers (including Chief Engineer Kazutoshi Muzuno in the snappy salmon-colored shirt) were posing for team pictures and having fun, so the serious work was clearly over. Of course, back in Japan there's still plenty of development work left as the official introduction is slated for the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show, with U.S. sales expected early next year.

It's good to see that Nissan will be the first unleash it's japanese supercar to the U.S. market which will shortly be followed by Toyota and Honda. I think the Toyota with the Lexus badged V-10 is going to be the king from Japan. I think Honda and the NSX successor will be on par the GTR since they are gunning for the 911 Turbo and similar cars priced at $100k.

this is my assumption though since the gallardo, and murcielago ran circles around the last nsx type-r putting it several classes up on the latter. maybe it would be like pride fighting vs. ufc and the next gen nxs goes pound for pound with the Z06 although I'm not a vetter kind of guy.

my bad honda is planning a V-10 in the nsx successor using r&d from it's F1 program. it went straight from v6 skipped v8 to the v10. how cool is that.

Will Nissan badge the GT-R as an Infiniti, after all?
From Leftlanenews...
Over the past few weeks, Nissan began extensive testing of its forthcoming GT-R sports car in the United States. Prototypes have been spotted across the country at various race tracks and on public streets. During a test at the Infineon Raceway in California, a Nissan engineer made a comment that raises new questions about how the car will be branded.
According to AutoWeek, a photographer at the track overheard the Nissan worker refer to the car as an "Infiniti Skyline GT-R." Such a label goes an announcement made in April suggesting the GT-R would be sold in the United States as a Nissan.
At the New York Auto Show, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said the high-performance sports car would wear the Nissan badge, consistent with its global branding.
A report published in the ensuing days suggested Infiniti dealers were "enraged" by the news. They "desperately wanted the GT-R as a halo for the brand," the Automotive News report said.
Has Nissan's top management had a change of heart? We'll find out no later than this fall, when the 500-plus horsepower sports car debuts at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

I still think it ought to stay a Nissan GT-R to keep true to the heritage.
If people need it to say infiniti when they buy it to keep up their image, go buy a Ferrari. If you're buying it because of the car it is, enjoy.
Hell, I'd buy a honda integra and wouldn't have any quarrels about it, because i know that that car itself is awesome regardless of the name.
Inifinti dealers only want it to boost their sales, they don't give a rats a$$ about the brand.
Correction: Infiniti dealers only care about THEIR brand recognition, hence why they want the GT-R monicker. That's understandable, I'm sure Acura goes through similiar things, hence probably why they are splitting their design teams. Even still, Nissan is their parent company, they don't like it, find another car to sell.

Somoene that can afford the nissan version, wouldn't care about jumping ship to the infiniti version IMHO especially if they are getting much more from it.
I think Infiniti should get it's own supercar whatever it may be rather than have a different version of the same exact car.

If they do have one for Infiniti and Nissan, you'll probably have the diehard GT-R lovers that would buy the Nissan version, and the other guys that go for the image and luxo brand and buy the infiniti version. In the end I guess it doesn't matter because they are still making money.
However, I think Nissan is looking at improving their brand recognition and image to the public and that is why adding the GT-R to their linup would greatly impress many people to buy into Nissan even if they never could afford a GT-R.

I think Infiniti dealers need to focus on demanding a new Q from Nissan (to compete with the LS460) rather than a halo sports/GT car. Not to mention development of a new V8.
