Morgan unveiled the Plus Four CX-T, a car with adventure at its core. A vehicle with capability not yet witnessed on a Morgan sports car, it opens up the possibility of routes, landscapes and destinations inaccessible by Morgan cars until now.

The Morgan Plus Four CX-T is inspired by Morgan's well documented history of competing in all-terrain endurance trials. As early as 1911, Morgan sports cars were competing and winning in trials competitions, and this spirit of adventure has been key to shaping the Morgan brand ever since. The more adventurous journeys that are frequently undertaken by Morgan customers all over the world have further fuelled the desire for Morgan to imagine the Plus Four CX-T.

Following the launch of the Plus Four in 2020, Morgan partnered with Rally Raid UK, renowned creator of Dakar race cars, to jointly design and engineer the Plus Four CX-T. One of the aims of the project is to demonstrate the capability and durability of Morgan's new CX-Generation platform, along with the Plus Four upon which the CX-T is based.

Just eight vehicles will be built, priced at Ł170,000 plus local taxes and supplied in full overland specification, with each customer having the opportunity to work alongside Morgan's design team to specify their own CX-T. Every Plus Four CX-T is built at Morgan's factory in Malvern, Worcestershire, before undergoing the final preparation and setup at Rally Raid UK's own workshop facilities. Morgan's design and engineering team have worked alongside Rally Raid UK throughout the programme to define the concept, specification, technical attributes, and aesthetic of the model.

Technical details

The exterior of the Morgan Plus Four CX-T is designed to maximise luggage and equipment carrying capacity, and provide the occupant protection necessary for extreme environments. Simultaneously, Morgan has ensured that its visual design reflects this capability and purposefulness.

Most prominently, the rear panel of the vehicle has been replaced with an equipment rack, with unique side body panels designed to be reminiscent of the classic four-seater Morgan.

The rack houses two ruggedised and waterproof Pelican luggage cases, a Zarges aluminium tool/storage box, two Rotopax 11-litre containers and two spare wheel/tyre assemblies. Additionally, for those who venture further off the beaten track, recovery equipment is mounted on the exterior of the car within easy reach when required. All exterior mounting systems for all storage and equipment have been painstakingly engineered to be tough and easy to access when needed.

The external protective exoskeleton can also be adapted to carry leisure equipment such as bikes and surf boards, to compliment the lifestyle activities of the owner, while the removable side screens can be mounted onto the roof of the vehicle, allowing them to be carried unobtrusively in case of a change in weather conditions.

Rally Raid UK undertook a complete study of the standard Plus Four vehicle to determine the possibilities for the conversion. This study included durability assessments of the platform, drivetrain, and suspension systems.

The suspension has been designed to be expedition ready: tough and fit for purpose. Durability, and a drive-over obstacle clearance of 230mm, has been achieved using modified Plus Six wishbones. These widen the track and allow for the extra arc of movement required to achieve the desired suspension performance. The wheel arch apertures have also been modified, allowing the suspension to compress deep into the wheel well, providing maximum traction and stability.

EXE-TC coilover assemblies with internal bump stops are used, these have been developed by EXE-TC specifically for the vehicle. These assemblies are born from off-road competition, and are calibrated to provide the ideal balance of compliance and durability.

In addition to the main suspension hardware, the lower suspension arms contain bespoke bushes which further increase durability. The combined suspension package is optimised to undertake journeys never before attempted in a Morgan sports car, while ensuring composure and comfort during any excursion into the back country.

A five-piece underbody protection system - comprising an engine guard, rear chassis guard, mid-section shield and rear undertray - helps to protect the chassis and important components from damage when driving in extreme conditions. The car is also fitted with a full bespoke exhaust system with rear side-exit that improves the departure angle and contributes to 230mm of ground clearance.

The Morgan Plus Four CX-T uses a BMW X-Drive electronic differential with bespoke software, calibrated and tested specifically for the application. Switches inside the cabin allow a choice of three modes to be selected depending upon the driving conditions; each mode varies the degree of differential lock that is applied. Selecting 'Road' mode fully opens the differential, while 'All-Terrain' mode applies approximately 45% lock to the rear differential, allowing some variation torque distribution between the rear wheels. 'All-Terrain - Extreme' mode fully locks the rear differential, providing equal torque to both rear wheels. The two All-Terrain modes are designed to be used when tackling rough surfaces and low-traction conditions. The final drive ratio has also been shortened to account for the larger diameter tyres and suit all-terrain usage.

Inside the cabin of the Plus Four CX-T features have been added to improve occupant comfort and usability in remote environments. A RAM mount track is built into to the dashboard to allow the secure fixing of a variety of devices such as phones or cameras. A flexible map light, pencil and notebook holder have also been integrated, all designed to withstand operation in harsh driving environments.

Cabin stowage has also been optimised with the addition of a removable map/document holder and insulated cool bag, both located in the passenger footwell. A custom-made first aid kit is mounted to the internal roll cage behind the seats. Just like the exterior equipment, every interior feature has been designed with accessibility and convenience in mind, whether this is for use in remote conditions or the leisure pursuits of the owner. The cabin is enclosed within a composite hard top which is unique to the Plus Four CX-T and has been intricately engineered to fit between the internal and external roll cages.

The Morgan Plus Four CX-T is the second of two special projects being produced by Morgan in 2021, with the first being the Plus 8 GTR. The introduction of the Plus Four CX-T also coincides with the announcement of Model Year 22 updates to the Plus Four and Plus Six, and helps to inform technical and aesthetic advancements for Morgan's current and future range of vehicles. The Plus Four CX-T is on sale immediately, with all vehicles due to be built before the end of 2021.

Jonathan Wells, Head of Design, Morgan Motor Company, said: "The Morgan design team has been conceptualising modern day trialling vehicles for many years. Around 18 months ago, our investors and CEO, Steve Morris, were in the studio and remarked how incredible it would be to bring one of these drawings to life. The project was unrestrained and born entirely from a desire to create an exciting British adventure vehicle. The CX-T, like many recent Morgan vehicles, demonstrates the flexibility of the Morgan design. For me, it's a complete package: historical integrity, legitimate capability, and a brand-new adventure-lead aesthetic."

Mike Jones, Rally Raid UK, said: "Applying my experience of 13 Dakar Rallies, 60 Dakar vehicle builds and a lifetime of overland adventuring to an unconventional sports car such as a Morgan has been an interesting and rewarding project. Having the opportunity to design a car for such a prestigious marque has been a responsibility that I never imagined I would have. Rally Raid UK and Morgan have engaged with industry-leading suppliers to source the highest quality components, as well as designing a range of bespoke parts that will remain unique to the model. The Morgan Plus Four CX-T is a genuine overland adventure vehicle and I look forward to seeing the incredible destinations that owners will find themselves in."

The Morgan Motor Company announced the launch of the Plus Four LM62, a model which celebrates the company's legendary class win in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans. Based on the standard Morgan Plus Four and limited to just 62 examples, it pays tribute to the Morgan Plus 4 SuperSports - known by its registration TOK 258 - which took victory in the 2.0-litre class of the gruelling endurance race six decades ago.

The renowned TOK 258 was finished in dark green, while a particular shade of red was popular on motorsport Morgan vehicles of the time, and these two colours have inspired the hues available on the Morgan Plus Four LM62. A Heritage White hardtop - just like the one fitted to the famous race car - comes as standard, marking the first time this item has been available for the model. Further paying homage to the victorious Morgan is an LM62 graphics pack, which includes roundels with the number '29' - as per TOK 258 - as well as an LM62 rear badge, silver-painted wire wheels, a Le Mans-style fuel filler cap and a domed rear panel. These touches are complemented by driving spot lights, body-coloured A-pillars, a black splitter and cowl mesh, polished stoneguard, black mohair sidescreens, a sidescreen bag embroidered with the LM62 logo, and an active sports exhaust with black tailpipes.

Inside, the model is adorned with an LM62 metal plaque, displaying the car's unique build number from its run of 62 examples, along with LM62 laser-engraved black saddle-leather door pulls and headrests embroidered with the specially designed LM62 graphic. Bespoke satin lacquer rubber mats with black vinyl edges, painted steering-wheel centre, and a Tawny wood centre-tunnel top and dashboard come fitted to the LM62 as standard, while heated black leather Comfort Plus seats with horizontal pleating, perforated seat centres and matching stitch colour, complete with leather wrapped seat backs complete the interior aesthetic.

To further personalise your Morgan Plus Four LM62, options include a soft-top hood, LM62-specific photographic build record, and an LM62 accessory pack which includes two-eared wheel spinners, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, headlight tape, and a chrome interior rear-view mirror.

Steve Morris, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Motor Company, said: "The 1962 Le Mans class-winning Morgan Plus 4 holds a special place in the hearts of Morgan enthusiasts, employees and owners around the world. It marked one of Morgan's greatest motorsport achievements, the car covering more than 2,200 miles at an average running speed of almost 94mph, and triumphing - like David vs Goliath - over our bigger, and better funded, rivals of the time. With the Morgan Plus Four LM62, we pay homage to this famous vehicle and incredible moment in time, 60 years on. Limited to just 62 individually numbered examples, the bespoke touches and enhanced level of standard specification make these cars an enticing proposition for customers wanting a piece of Morgan history."

The Plus Four LM62 is available from Morgan Dealers globally, in left- or right-hand drive, and with the choice of manual or automatic transmission. In the UK, it's priced from Ł78,995.

In line with its philosophy of continual evolution, Morgan Motor Company is reimagining its Plus Four and Plus Six models. The enhancements, which are being introduced as part of a formal recognition of a new 'Plus' line, will feature on all Plus Four and Plus Six models from January 2023.

The name 'Plus' signifies a mainstay of Morgan production, and sits alongside the newly introduced 'Super' pillar. The nameplate was first witnessed on the Plus 4, introduced in 1950. Plus represents more than 70 years of heritage, yet looks firmly to the future, embracing relevant new technology and reimagining the experience of a modern, handcrafted sports car for the 21st Century.

Coach-built on the company's lightweight CX-Generation bonded aluminium platform, the design of Plus models is timeless and enduring. Morgan Plus Four, with its slightly narrower body and wire wheels, is more akin to the original vehicles in its aesthetic. Morgan Plus Six, which is wider with a more assertive appearance, presents a more contemporary aesthetic. Both vehicles will benefit from the new features, and their list of options and configurations will be closely aligned, ensuring a cohesive tailoring experience for customers.

"The new Morgan Plus line celebrates the essence of unconventional driving and ethical engineering. It unites timeless design and craftsmanship with the most exhilarating driving engagement. With Plus we want to honour those individuals who believe that motoring is not about status, but more about character, authenticity, and pleasure." Massimo Fumarola, Chief Executive Officer, Morgan Motor Company

The latest Morgan Plus Four combines the company's signature blend of industry-leading craftsmanship and engineering honesty to create the purest expression of the four-wheeled Morgan sports car available today.

Proudly continuing the legacy of the company's longest running nameplate, the latest Plus Four features a series of design, dynamic and technological enhancements, informed by over 70 years of evolution.

Massimo Fumarola, Chief Executive Officer, Morgan Motor Company, said: "We are proud to continue Plus Four's incredible legacy - one that stretches back to 1950 - with this latest model, honouring the spirit of the original car yet reimagining it for today. The latest Plus Four is unmistakably a Morgan for today's discerning customer. The importance and responsibility when evolving this longstanding nameplate is not lost on the team at Pickersleigh Road. Whilst other models within our lineup offer greater opportunity for experimentation, Plus Four requires a more delicate approach. We believe that the new features and detail culminate to create a fitting evolution and an immediate impression of a more refined, usable, and quality sports car, yet one that remains playful and fun. The introduction of the latest Plus Four also brings a renewed approach to vehicle design, engineering, quality, and production at Morgan. Through greater internal collaboration we have been able to further champion the qualities that make Morgan special, whilst creating even more compelling sports cars for our global community of customers."

Evolving timeless design

The design intent for new Morgan Plus Four has been to simplify and reduce visual noise, allowing the timeless silhouette of Plus Four to be further celebrated. The front and rear views are characterised by the introduction of new lighting, wings, front splitter, rear diffuser, and floating front and rear number plate plinths. These changes culminate in a refreshed visual identity and an overall cleaner appearance.

The new front and rear lights - manufactured exclusively for Morgan - have been conceived by the company's in-house design and engineering teams and are free from the constraints that a readily available lighting unit imposes. The introduction of the new front and rear lights is evidence of the company's wider ethos of enhancing usability and quality, whilst maintaining the timeless appeal that is synonymous with the brand.

The new 8" headlight has subtly grown in diameter over previous models by 1-inch, helping to return the more traditional proportions of Plus Four - which grew slightly when moving to the CX-Generation Aluminium Platform in 2020. The new headlight design incorporates the front indicator, allowing for the removal of separately mounted indicator units, this feature is also reflected within the rear lights. Both front and rear lights emit a more powerful and higher-quality light source than previous models.

The front and rear wings on new Plus Four have been entirely reformed and are now constructed using a cold forming technique. Whilst the changes are deliberately subtle, they feature a greater level of surfacing, influencing the way in which light reflects over the wing profile, adding tension and evoking a more sculpted volume.

To coincide with the introduction of new front and rear wings, the latest Plus Four features a new front splitter and a new rear diffuser, both of which feature a floating number plate plinth. Both the front splitter and rear diffuser are finished in dark matte grey paint to reduce visibility and lift the visual weight of the car. This feature harks back to period Morgan sports cars, many of which featured no front undertray or bumpers, thus creating a pronounced horizontal line at the lower section of the wings and central cowl.

A new model badge features Morgan's own H.F.S. Bold typeface. Inspired by car badges that used italicised typefaces and repeating speed lines, the badge is a contemporary interpretation of classic automotive brand design.

Both the rear-view mirror and wing mirrors are new. Each has been designed in-house and is manufactured exclusively for Morgan. Far surpassing the engineering integrity, functionality and aesthetic qualities of previous mirrors, the new units are made from lightweight aluminium and are homologated for all existing markets. Whilst subtle, the meticulous attention-to-detail and rigorous testing process of the new mirrors represents the level of detail upon which the company is now operating.

Jonathan Wells, Chief Design Officer, Morgan Motor Company, said: "To think of a Morgan is to picture the unmistakable silhouette of the Plus Four. During this exciting time in the company's history, whilst we look towards broader visual experimentation across our model range, the continuous evolution of Plus Four - our time-proven brand anchor - is rightly afforded a more delicate approach. The changes we have made - as with any longstanding design-led product - consider the delicate balance between tradition and innovation. For the latest Plus Four, we are proud to present an extensive list of component design updates that come together to deliver an undeniably refreshing yet reputably authentic impression. The wings have been entirely reformed with a greater level of intelligent surfacing to control highlights and add poise. Our new headlights feature the latest illumination technology yet were born of a desire to address a more traditional and balanced frontal proportion. Our new mirrors are now formed of beautifully machined aluminium. Strategic design simplification has reduced visual distraction and celebrates enhanced quality at a component level throughout."

Pure Driving Enjoyment

Morgan Plus Four prioritises driving feel above performance figures and lap times. The company's engineering team pursue dynamic performance that rewards the driver, giving them a greater connection to the car and the road ahead. Plus Four is available in manual and automatic transmission variants and is powered by the latest BMW 2.0 litre engine.

The latest Plus Four features a change to the standard suspension consisting of new spring rates and re-valved dampers. In addition, an optional Dynamic Handling Pack - extensively developed alongside suspension experts, Nitron, - will be available from launch. The Dynamic Handling Pack is manufactured exclusively for Morgan and includes new springs with single way adjustable damping and adjustable spring platform, as well as the addition of a rear anti-roll bar. These changes help to deliver a greater level of dynamic performance and, like the Plus Four overall, aim to deliver driving feel and enjoyment.

Enhancing occupant interaction with Plus Four has been a primary focus for the company's design and engineering teams, and is consistent with the ethos of blending tradition with appropriate modern technology. Specific updates for Plus Four include the Sennheiser audio system, enhancements to the LCD screen and dashboard, new interior illumination, and a new key fob. These changes enhance the user experience, seamlessly integrating with the vehicle without detracting from its timeless appeal.

The lightweight Sennheiser audio system, first introduced to Plus Four in 2022, has been enhanced for the latest Plus Four. The enhanced system utilises additional 'invisible' speakers in the cockpit, specifically underneath both seats, and higher-specification conventional speakers within the doors. As with the previous iteration of the audio system, Sennheiser's tuning creates the magical illusion of a broad sound stage in front of the passengers, providing a high-quality soundtrack, and now an even greater range of volume and increased Bluetooth range.

The visual identity of the Sennheiser premium audio system is maintained thanks to the speaker grilles located on each door. The grille design takes inspiration from the iconic louvres that are stamped into each bonnet of a Plus Four, and feature the Sennheiser logo.

Morgan Plus Four drivers will now possess greater control to influence the audio choice with new track pause and skip functionality, operated using the existing volume control dial - therefore removing the need for additional switches. Volume display and track ID will be shown on the LCD screen, situated between the temperature and fuel dials in front of the steering wheel. Further changes to the LCD screen include a range of visual enhancements to graphics, whilst all dashboard button lights are finished in white.

Reflecting the changes to exterior lighting, new interior lighting helps to illuminate the elegant cockpit of Plus Four. Using higher-quality lighting modules and more intelligent programming, the illumination experience has been enhanced, and features fade-in-fade-out technology. The position, direction, and configuration, of all lighting has been meticulously designed and evaluated to achieve the optimum scenario for occupants.

Matt Hole, Chief Technical Officer, Morgan Motor Company, said: "The latest Plus Four represents a fitting evolution of our longest established nameplate and delivers an even greater Morgan experience to our customers around the world. It does this thanks to new dynamic improvements which deliver a more engaging level of performance, through myriad technology updates which improve the user's interaction with the vehicle, and a range of quality enhancements which further increase engineering integrity. Achieving these refinements without detracting from the timeless integrity of Plus Four is down to the skill, dedication and collaboration of our teams and suppliers."

Plus Four, a legacy

First introduced in 1950 at the Earl's Court Motor Show in London, the Plus 4 has proven to be one of the company's most popular models. Named Plus 4 due to its increased power over the 4-4 - the first four-wheeled Morgan - which was introduced in 1936. For the first four years of its life, the Plus 4 featured a 'flat' radiator and cycle wings. From 1954, however, the 'cowl radiator' design was introduced. This is the timeless silhouette that has become synonymous with Morgan, and the design proportions that today's Plus Four continues.

Thousands of examples have been produced throughout its life, with exports proving popular to all key markets including the USA. It was a Plus 4 that won its class at the 1962 Le Mans 24 Hours race, the company's most notable motorsport triumph. A Plus 4 was the first car owned by Ralph Lauren and, to this day, features in his collection - one of the most revered automotive collections in the world. Its centrality within the story of Morgan is unquestionable.

21st Century Coachbuilding

Like every four-wheeled Morgan produced today, Plus Four combines a blend of traditional craftsmanship and appropriate modern technology, a philosophy which the company refers to as '21st Century Coachbuilding'. This philosophy flows throughout the company and influences its approach to designing and engineering each model, as well as the way in which every vehicle is constructed. As part of this philosophy, all models benefit from continued development and incremental improvements throughout, ensuring that the quality of each model is reflective of a modern-day sports car. Reflecting these advances, the warranty on Plus Four is now three years, with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

Each aluminium body is hand-formed over an ash wood frame. This body, which is beautifully made using age-old techniques handed down through generations, is seamlessly married to an ultra-modern aluminium platform with the latest braking, suspension, and electronic systems.

The finest Scottish leather, itself a by-product of the food and agricultural sectors, is used sparingly within the cockpit of Plus Four. This leather is trimmed into each car using traditional techniques and tools. By the nature of the model's hand-crafted manufacture, natural materials are used sparingly with minimal waste produced.

Bespoke As Standard

At Morgan, there is no 'bespoke' department. Every Plus Four that enters production is bespoke as standard. Beyond the almost endless combination of colourways and options available to configure, prospective owners can go beyond this and request additional materials and features for their new Plus Four. This approach ensures that every Plus Four built is a true 'one-off' and is as individual as its owner.
