COSTA MESA, Calif., April 3, 2012 – Hyundai Motor America, the most fuel efficient automaker in the U.S., today announced an all-time monthly sales record of 69,728 units, up 13 percent over last March, which held the previous record. For the first quarter, Hyundai sales were up 15 percent over 2011.

"March was the best month in Hyundai's history and capped the best first quarter we've ever recorded," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president of national sales. "Improving vehicle availability, particularly among our most fuel-efficient vehicles, Sonata, Elantra, Accent and Veloster, has fueled this record growth.”

Overall retail sales through dealerships rose 33 percent over last March. Sales of Accent, Sonata and Elantra saw sales increases y-o-y of 28 percent, six percent and eight percent, respectively. Fleet mix remains low at 11 percent for the month.

“As Hyundai continues to offer more fuel-efficient vehicles, we are seeing more and more consumers in our showrooms, resulting in greater 40-mpg highway vehicle sales than ever before,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “Our 40-mpg vehicle sales are up an astonishing 67.5 percent over last March.”

Hyundai’s RWD premium products, Genesis and Equus, saw an outstanding sales increase of 30 percent over March 2011 and are up 35 percent over February. While sales in the CUV segment remained relatively flat, the launch of the all-new 2013 Santa Fe at the New York International Auto Show will bring increased interest and demand in Hyundai’s CUV segment.

Hard to believe that this is the same company that used to produce Excels and Scoupes. Although they're not on my radar, I'm happy to see they're bringing the goods these days.

Arrow Hybrid Sales

DETROIT -- Almost two-thirds of U.S. hybrid buyers returning to the market in 2011 chose something besides another hybrid.

Excluding owners of the best-selling Toyota Prius, the repurchase rate among other hybrid buyers dropped to 22%, according to a Polk study released today.

According to the study, the loyalty rate for hybrids since the beginning of 2008 has ranged between 26.4% in the 2nd quarter of 2010 and 41.8% in the 2nd quarter of 2009. The rate for the 4th quarter of 2011 was 40.1% while the total for 2011 was 35.0%.

But there is some good news for manufacturers who have invested heavily into developing hybrid technology, said Brad Smith, director of Polk's loyalty management practice.

Conquest tool

Hybrids seem to attract new buyers to brands, and they may also help brands retain customers, he said.

"It's a great conquesting tool for brands," Smith said in a phone interview, calling hybrid technology "a competitive edge when it comes to attracting new customers."

That is especially true for Toyota, a hybrid pioneer that has expanded its Prius hybrid line to 3 body styles and just added a plug-in version.

Polk said in 2011, 60% of Prius owners back in the market bought a Toyota brand vehicle. The study also found that 41% of the Prius owners back in the market either bought another Prius or a hybrid from another automaker.

For Honda hybrid owners, 52% stayed with the Honda brand, but less than 1 in 5 bought another hybrid from any brand.

Competition with conventionals

Smith said the biggest challenge for hybrid makers is that less expensive conventional fuel-efficiency technologies are also advancing rapidly, reducing the fuel-efficiency advantage of more expensive hybrids.

That may be why hybrids accounted for just 2.4% of total U.S. auto sales last year, down from 2.9% in a peak of 2.9 percent in 2008.

"The premium price points for hybrids are just too high when so many conventional small and mid-size cars have improved fuel economy," Smith said.

This was the first time Polk has conducted a study of hybrid buyers returning to the market.

Post April

American Honda today reported April 2012 U.S. sales of 122,012 units, an increase of 10% based on the daily selling rate*. The Honda division posted April 2012 sales of 109,837, an increase of 9.2% compared to April 2011. Acura's U.S. April sales of 12,175 were up 18% compared to April 2011.

Honda
- Honda Accord sales up more than 40% compared to April 2011, demonstrating the strength of Accord, even as an all-new version is set to debut this fall.

- New April sales record for CR-V. Accord, CR-V, Odyssey and Ridgeline all post double-digit percentage sales gains compared to last year.

- Honda Civic Hybrid sales up more than 600 percent on heightened fuel-price sensitivity.

"With double-digit sales growth in April, the Accord continues to be the retail sales leader in the mid-size segment,"
said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. "As other manufacturers resort to fleet sales, the quality and value of the Honda Accord continues to win new customers even as we prepare to launch an all-new model this fall."

Acura
- 2013 Acura RDX is fast out of the gate, with sales of the all-new SUV up more than 65 %compared to same period last year.

- All core Acura models (TL, TSX, RDX and MDX) post double-digit increases compared to 2011, while MDX remains Acura's best selling model.

- The all-new ILX compact luxury sedan goes on sale May 22.

"We're delighted to see customers embrace the right-sized 2013 Acura RDX," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "It's great to see so many new owners recognizing the remarkable combination of class-leading fuel economy, performance and luxury in our new SUV."

Thanks TSX69. Still amazes me that MDX strongly outsells TL and TSX in a $4/gal market (here in SoCal at least). Interesting to see the Honda fuel mizers continue a downward sales trend.

And I'm hoping Acura gave extra bonuses to those 33 salesmen who defied the odds and lured 33 buyers into the archaic albatross known as the RL.

Ha Ha, we just got our first (and only) 2012 RL. The production line is now closed for this model. Must be gearing up for the new one.

Thanks TSX69. Glad to hear that the new RDX is off to a good start.

It's unfortunate that the TSX wagon is such a low volume seller. I hope Acura keeps a wagon in their future line-up, but it would difficult to justify based on those numbers.

They don't make very many. I had someone order a Forged Silver Tech in November. They just got the car in April. All the while, we had 3-4 Techs on the lot in different colors they're not interested in. We also have 6 base models ....

I just leased a Forged Silver Tech last month. It was on the lot, so I didn't have to wait. I recall Acura saying that they hoped to sell about 2,000 wagons each year, but it looks like they're falling short of that estimate.

US consumers need to change their attitude and be more like European customers who routinely order cars and not count on finding their car on the lot. I guess all that Accord advertising is helping the numbers.

No, they wanted to sell 4,000 a year. I said that was both too much (for the market) and too little (to adequately supply dealers)

Which has a lot to do with my point above. The volume is in a 'no mans land' unless both buyers and dealers change their attitudes. Much easier said than done.

No mystery here. When your lineup looks like except for one vehicle...well your gonna sell that one decent looking vehicle more than the looking ones.

The Domestics
Chrysler was by far Detroit’s strongest automaker last month, with its best April since 2008 and its 25th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. Jeep’s Wrangler and Dodge’s Challenger had their best April ever, while the Dodge Avenger broke an all-time record.

Perhaps most notable at Chrysler was that the Chrysler 200 became the automaker’s second-best seller (at 13,343 units) behind the Ram full-size pickups.

While Ford was off overall last month, the Blue Oval’s Edge and Fusion had their best-ever Aprils. Still, sales slid 44 percent for the Fiesta, 20 percent for the Escape and 27 percent for the Lincoln MKZ.

The picture wasn’t that much different at General Motors, where most divisions saw declines. GM says that the “timing of rental customer deliveries” saw its fleet sales drop 25 percent last month. By comparison, its retail sales were “essentially equal” to April 2011. Individually, GM saw mixed results; Buick and Cadillac were generally weak, while trucks, crossovers and SUVs were mostly strong.

The Asians
Although Honda’s recent moves have been panned by many critics, the automaker seems to be making a modest sales comeback; three of its models (Accord, Civic, CR-V) cracked the overall top 10 (to come tomorrow). Civic Hybrid sales were up 612 percent, while the automaker hit an April sales record for its new CR-V. Meanwhile, Acura’s redesigned RDX saw sales up 65 percent compared to the outgoing model, while the Accord sedan had a particularly strong month.

Mazda hasn’t had a lot of good news lately, but the automaker says that last month was its best since 2008. The automaker’s big hit was its new CX-5 crossover, which saw 3,521 deliveries in its second full month on the market.

Nissan’s sales were all over the place, but perhaps the biggest news was that its Infiniti division saw a 5 percent gain thanks only to the new JX large crossover. The JX’s 2,079 deliveries were offset by more than 19 percent declines for all Infinitis other than the QX56 (down 6 percent). Nissan, meanwhile, had a weak month for its typically strong-selling Altima (dealer inventories are likely low since a new model is due out soon).

Toyota’s larger Prius line (which now includes the Prius v and Prius c) had its best-ever April, as sales were up nearly across the board for the Japanese automaker. Interestingly, Toyota’s smallest car – its new Scion iQ – outsold its largest SUV – the Toyota Sequoia, 962 to 882 units.

Are the Koreans plateauing? Both Hyundai and Kia posted modest 1 percent gains last month, due in part, the automakers say, to limited production capacity. Regardless, both broke April records.

The Europeans
Audi had its 16th consecutive best-ever month on big gains for its A6 (up 137 percent), although its highest-volume model, the A4, was off 7 percent.

BMW’s two brands posted mixed results, although the automaker was pretty happy with a 21 percent gain (to just over 9,000 cars) for its redesigned 3-Series. Arch rival Mercedes-Benz had its best-ever April, topping BMW by about 1,000 units, a staggering 104 of which were $190,000-plus SLS AMGs.

VW had its best April in more than 40 years – when its biggest news was the arrival of the Super Beetle. Fueling its growth was the Passat, which broke 10,000 units for the second time. VW is still a ways off from its goal of 800,000 units annually by 2018 (including Audi), but it is making steady progress.

Aside from sticker price, fuel economy is the MDX's ONLY con.

- Honda Accord sales up more than 40% compared to April 2011, demonstrating the strength of Accord, even as an all-new version is set to debut this fall.

I love my 12 EX and it's remarkable how well it did in the recent C/D comparo.....despite being very long in the tooth.

My banter aside, there's NO denying the Accord's staying power.

..... to Acura for making the 2G RDX what the first one should have been.

Kia:

Kia Motors America Announces Record April Sales

Strong Demand for Optima, Soul and Sorento Leads to Kia's 20th Straight Monthly Sales Record; Annual Sales Up 22.2 Percent

IRVINE, Calif., May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia Motors America (KMA) has been the fastest growing car company in the United States[1] over the past five years, and the brand's strong momentum continued with best-ever April sales of 47,550 units. Kia has achieved 20 consecutive monthly sales records thanks in large part to continued high demand for the brand's two U.S.-built* products – the Optima midsize sedan and Sorento CUV built at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) – as well as the ongoing popularity of the Soul urban passenger vehicle. Sales of the fuel-efficient 2012 Rio subcompacts, which can deliver up to 40 miles per gallon[2] on the highway, increased 55.6-percent over the same period in 2011.

"Our record April performance is the latest illustration of how far the Kia brand has progressed as we continue to attract new customers with our unique value formula of world-class design, outstanding fuel efficiency, premium features and cutting-edge technologies," said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and KMMG. "KMMG recently was named 'Large Manufacturer of the Year' by the State of Georgia, and the plant's success is a major contributor to our growth. With more new products and technologies set to arrive within the next year, we will continue our efforts to raise consumer awareness and consideration for the Kia brand and our full lineup of stylish and fuel-efficient vehicles

Hyundai:

Hyundai Motor America Reports Best-Ever April Sales

- Total sales up despite three fewer selling days

- Second best month in company history

- For the year, 39 percent of all Hyundai vehicles sold have 40 MPG highway EPA labels

COSTA MESA, Calif., May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America, the most fuel efficient automaker in the U.S., today announced an all-time April sales record of 62,264 units, up 1 percent over last year's all-time April record, and the second best sales month in company history after last month's all-time record. With three fewer selling days this April versus last April, Hyundai's average daily sales rate improved 12 percent.

"Never has a relatively flat sales month felt quite so good," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president of national sales. "We definitely felt some pullback from an overheated March sales pace but really picked up some momentum at the tail end of the month and finished with a flurry to set another all-time volume record. Vehicle availability continues to improve and our announcement just last night of the assembly plant expansion in Alabama will provide much needed production increases for our highly fuel efficient Sonata and Elantra sedans, while generating nearly 900 new jobs for the local economy."

In its first month of sales, the all-new Azera is off to a torrid start with sales up 399 percent over last April, while Hyundai's family of RWD premium products, Genesis and Equus, continue to deliver outstanding sales results with volume up 36 percent over a year ago. In an ongoing effort to meet retail demand, business to fleet accounts continues to run at less than a 10 percent mix, amongst the lowest levels in the industry.

Accord had a strong month due to the crazy incentives and deals Honda and dealers were offering.

Examples:

- $5,000 off MSRP for LX Accord
- $4,500 off MSRP for EX-L V6
- 3 year lease of Accord SE for $109/month with $1,495 down
- 3 year lease of Accord EX-L V6 for $189/month with $1,495 down

I received 2 letters and 1 email from local dealers in April trying to get me to trade in my Accord for a new one. A couple even offered to make my first months payment and said now's a great time to trade in since used car values are at a historic high.

The MDX is not just good looking for an Acura, in my opinion it's the best looking SUV in its category (mid-sized). It looks better than the X5 or Q7. The new redesigned RDX is also good looking. It will be a sales winner. Although the RLX is better looking than the current RL, I am not sold. The new generation TL needs a redesign because even the 12 has the Toyota Solara look.

Save for the MDX, this has been a lost generation for Acura (09-12).

I received 2 letters and 1 email from local dealers in April trying to get me to trade in my Accord for a new one. A couple even offered to make my first months payment and said now's a great time to trade in since used car values are at a historic high.
Ah I was wondering what happened. The Accord hasn't seen monthly numbers in the 30's for a long time. This sudden spike was def noticeable. But looks like Honda is finally deciding to give customers deals.

Double-edged sword, folks. GM used/uses heavy discounts to move inventory and look what it did/does to their resale value.

I wonder why the Fit is hurting so badly. We can't keep them on the lot. We do have tons of Civics though, including one Si coupe and one Si sedan.

I'm wondering whats going on in the Japanese factories, maybe Suzuka specifically.

The Fit and CR-Z are down, though according to people I speak to (higher up the food chain) claim there is plenty of demand and not enough supply.

Combined sales of Kia/hyundai is still less than honda/Acura.

There is thai flood issue with Honda. So Honda has redirect Japan supplies to Asia as vehicle sales there more profitable.

I dont think Acura is lost generation with beak. It still managed 12k sales. which is pretty good considering Lexus got 17k and BMW 21k but those two brands alone had more 10 times variation of Acura.
Just look at hybrid / diesel line up along with coupes, convertibles. etc.
Hyundai/Kia cannot even lunch premium brand.

I love my 09 MDX but for the same money I'd get the X5 (E70) in a hearbeat.

Incentives

Incentive spending on new car sales in April hit its lowest level in almost 7 years, says Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information. Edmunds.com reports that the average True Cost of Incentives® (TCISM) per vehicle in April was $2,071, the lowest average spend since automakers spent an average of $1,962 in October 2005. April's average TCISM is down 2.2% from March, and down 1.8% from April of last year.

"This is the clearest indication yet that consumer motivation is high and that automakers feel little pressure to rely on incentives in order to keep sales churning," said Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell. "We'll likely see incentives linger at these low levels until auto sales ease off the torrid pace we've seen so far in 2012."
PHP Code:
Average True Cost of Incentives® (TCISMby Car Manufacturer
Manufacturer     12
-Apr     12-Mar     11-Apr     Apr 2012 vs Mar 2012     Apr 2012 vs Apr 2011
Chrysler
$2,495     $2,486     $2,401     0.4%     3.9%
Ford     $2,360     $2,701     $2,341     -12.6%     0.8%
GM     $3,446     $3,258     $3,015     5.8%     14.3%
Honda     $992     $991     $1,679     0.1%     -40.9%
Nissan     $2,136     $2,455     $1,836     -13.0%     16.3%
Toyota     $1,388     $1,371     $1,730     1.2%     -19.8%
Industry     $2,071     $2,118     $2,109     -2.2%     -1.8
The most notable shift in spending among the Big 6 automakers came from Nissan, whose spending fell 13.0% month over month and even as it rose 16.3% year over year. Ford was the only other major manufacturer to drop its incentive spending in April. Its average TCISM per vehicle fell 12.6% month to month, but ticked up 0.8% year over year.

Even as gas prices started to decline in April, car buyers still found some of the best April deals in less fuel-efficient segments. The large car segment, for example, offered the highest discounts, on average, at 13.2% off MSRP, which was up from 12.2% off MSRP in March. Dealers, however, kept a tighter incentives grip on smaller fuel-efficient vehicles. The discount on subcompact vehicles was 2.2% off MSRP in April ? down from an average of 2.5% in March. And the discount off compact cars in April fell to 4.5% off MSRP in April, down from 5.2% in March.

Shoppers can always find the vehicles with the most compelling deals on Edmunds.com's True Market Value® Deals of the Month page.

Edmunds.com's monthly True Cost of Incentives® (TCISM) report takes into account all automakers' various U.S. incentives programs, including subvented interest rates and lease programs, as well as cash rebates to consumers and dealers. To ensure the greatest possible accuracy, Edmunds.com bases its calculations on sales volume, including the mix of vehicle makes and models for each month, as well as on the proportion of vehicles for which each type of incentive was used.

Clearly the people are buying Volkswagens in droves.

Their N.A. strategy is clearly working.

Yup, well VW brought two specific NA vehicles and that was the Jetta and the Passat. The Passat is, I think a strong competitor against its rivals, if not better.

The jetta on the other hand I think sucks.

But their marketing strategy seems to be good too cause people may come to look at a jetta but may leave with something else, just a thought since all their other sales are rising as well. I'm glad though this means VW will bring more special models here! Well hopefully.

As for Hyundai/Kia I do think they will ever catch honda. Right now they are coming close but they're still years behind and in that time I'm sure Honda will have learned their lesson. Well if not they need a new head for the NA Honda. I still dont see myself ever buying anything from Hyundai/Kia and the only car I recommend from them is the Genesis. All the others, I see something else better in the market, which isnt a honda either though.

I think Honda is years behind Hyundai/Kia.

There's not a single product from Honda right now that I would recommend anyone to buy because there are just better cars out there in every segment that Honda used to completely dominate.

Since it's all opinion anyway, I think they're at most one generation behind, and this is mostly due to the way cars/drivetrains cycle through their lifespans (ie. Sonata released after current Accord). IMO, in about 6-8 months Honda will cycle back towards the top.

However, I don't think in the current or future landscape we will see any manufacture 'dominate' (if you consider Honda's market share of the 80-90's domination). I think in reality, Toyota dominated those years but Honda had huge 'mind-share' that was disproportionate to their sales.

I actually agree with what you've just posted.

But it's just that I know Civic just came out not long ago, but it just still feels like it's pretty much the same thing as the previous generation. And the Accord seems like it's been million years since that generation came out. I don't know. Back in the days, I used to think that whatever Honda came out with new generations of their products, I could have confidently said "those are great cars because it's made by Honda." But nowadays, they all look pretty much outdated and get blown away by its competitors.
