Monthly Car Sales news

Yes but the 2010's are also trickling in. Those numbers probably understate things. The local dealer where I do business has about dozen total TL's in stock. That's low from their typical 30+, however, I realize we are in a recession and sales are way down. Inventory would be expected to be lower, but he was complaining it was so low they couldn't provide enough choice and were losing many sales.
Here's a recent article about Honda passing Chrysler this year for #4:
http://www.autonews.com/article/2009...912049986/1078
From the article, John Mendel:
But as politicians ponder the pouring of billions of taxpayer dollars into rescuing Chrysler, getting passed by Honda might confirm some cynics' belief that Chrysler is beyond saving. But Mendel disagrees, saying the current recession has thrown everyone's sales numbers into confusion.
“We are all in the same hospital, and some of us are more critical than others,” he said. “Everyone is hurting. We cut Formula One. We cut 200,000 units of production. It was the right thing to do, but it was painful.”
He added: “Either you pay in production cuts, increased fleet sales or increased incentives, but everyone is paying right now.”

The first part of the Autonews.com article (the rest is quoted above):
December 4, 2009 - 1:33 pm ET
LOS ANGELES -- For years, industry watchers trembled at the idea that Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. could pass Chrysler Group in annual sales and somehow ruin the glory that was the “Big Three” in the U.S. market.
Once that happened in 2006, the sea changes have come fast and furious. Toyota likely will maintain its lead over Ford Motor Co. this year, and other Asian brands are solidifying market share gains in this down market.
But the underlying thought was that it was still Toyota against the Detroit 3. That will change in a month, with the fait accompli of American Honda passing Chrysler Group to become the No. 4 automaker in the United States.
Through November, American Honda had sold 1.044 million units, holding a 200,000-unit lead over Chrysler. At this time last year, Chrysler led Honda by 21,000 units and squeaked out a 25,000-unit victory at year's end. There is no chance for Chrysler to throw a Hail Mary this time.
Chrysler spokeswoman Kathy Graham said the company is aware that it has fallen behind Honda in sales but said Chrysler officials think the situation is temporary.
“We are taking the steps that are necessary to have a good foundation and to build consumer confidence,” she said. Graham said Chrysler's increased ad spending, which started last month, should help shore up sales.
“We are on the right path. There will be short-term pain to get to our long-term goals,” she said.
John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president, said no celebrations are planned to mark passing Chrysler.
“We only look at our sales and our objective,” Mendel said. “We may look at Civic and Corolla or Accord and Camry, but not at who ranks where.”

I have to routinely remind them that my old 07 AV6 (built in Ohio) is as American as their 05 CTS and more than their Mexican built 06 Zephyr but, they never bite. To them, it's HQ'd in Japan so, it's Japanese no matter where it's built....and I think a lot of folks share the same sentiment. (Honestly, my parents have a problem with what they perceive to be the arrogance of the Japanese in general. )

Labor and part supplier dollars stay in the country, but profits go overseas. Bottom line; buying a Honda helps GDP as much as buying Chevy, but that's not true for our GNP. We're much better off as a nation if GM profits rather than Honda. That's just the cold hard economic facts.
Having said that, I still haven't bought Big Three car since 1994. I'm not making an soap box statement.

So let us all get this right. You don't like to be questioned but you can question others. You also can make personal attacks (sleeping with my mother??) but you can't handle being made fun of?
You then say no one else brings data or facts but you have yet to do the same?
We are truly confused.

That is definitely true. Those that are a part of Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" may never view any Japanese product fairly. Locally, with our diverse culture, it is not really a problem, but it must be tough in middle America. If you're interested, check out the Autoline Detroit ep with (former I think) Honda manufacturing VP Larry Jutte. He talks about how much he buys domestically.

Curiously, Honda has produced way more vehicles in the U.S. in calendar year 2009 than Chrysler. As of late November, Honda has built a total of about 655,000 vehicles in the U.S, while Chrysler, with its plants idled for a significant portion of the year, made about 425,000 in the U.S.
Honda has a manufacturing capacity of 1.62 million in North America (including Mexico), including 1.18 million vehicles in the U.S.:
The automaker also has the largest auto engine plant in the world, in Anna, Ohio, capable of building 1.16 million engines a year, plus a V-6 plant in Lincoln, Alabama, four-cylinder engine production in Alliston, Ontario (Canada), and automatic transmission plants in Russells Point, Ohio, and Tallapaloosa, Georgia. Honda also builds Honda CR-V models in El Salto, Mexico; and Civic Sedan, Coupe, and Si models plus the Acura MDX in Alliston, Ontario.

Looks like Acura needs to build a TL coupe, a TL convertible, a M version of the TL, a TL wagon, a TL hatchback, etc...otherwise, it would never catch up with the other competitors.
#507
I'm glad the TL sales aren't at the top. We, as consumers, can't let them keep building cars with fugly styling or else they'll get the wrong idea and keep designing them that way.

I'm not really a daily driver (commuter rail FTW) but, I tend to see many more MDXs here in central NJ than RXs. That said, if the 3G RX is at least as good as the 2G then I can understand why it sells so well. (If we didn't need that 3rd row on standby -- read: MDX -- we may have leaned towards the RX, a loaded Murano or ML with respect to our recent MDX purchase.)

The ones that surprise me:
When I checked out this car in the showroom I liked it but frankly I thought the Q5 would kick its butt. Good for Mercedes though.
Cadillac at #2 behind Lexus, good for them!
BMW
Not that I don't like the car myself, but reviews like this surely don't help.

A little bit skewed because the coupes for Audi and Infiniti are counted separately.

The last generation never had a problem staying near the top of the segment. This generation is supposedly more competitive than ever before, but it's also more butt ugly than ever before. The ugly is apparently neutralizing any competitive advantage it has.

No, and I'm surprised they even sold that many, seeing as though there are hardly any on the lots at all. I think it went on sale officially 12/15, but really, I don't think any dealers had any to sell.

I don't think the increased size/enlargement of the 4G TL helped either-- it's now bigger than every other car I considered to replace my 3G and fell off the potential replacement list, due to both size and exterior design.

All the Acura dealerships in my area only had 1 ZDX as a demo that was not for sale & apparently that is how it is nationwide ... so too soon to gauge or declare the success or failure of the vehicle but I am sure that that will not stop some people here ...
