Mitsubishi: Development and Technology News
Car News briefs: Mitsu says six new products in pipeline - - Source: Autoweek
Mitsubishi president Rich Gilligan promises six new Mitsubishi products in the next 26 months, and while he is not elaborating, here’s what we hear is coming: Eclipse, which is out now; Raider pickup arriving in August; Eclipse Spyder in January 2006 followed by the new Outlander later that year; Lancer in winter 2006-07, and the Lancer Evo in 2007. Starting with Eclipse, Mitsubishi marketing goes “j-cool,” which refers to all things cool and Japanese.

More Future Model News
TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to kill its current lineup of U.S.-made vehicles, including the Eclipse sporty car and Endeavor crossover, over the next 3 years and switch to producing global vehicles at its Illinois plant, partly to target export markets.
The current nameplates will be phased out by 2014 as part of the carmaker's “Jump 2013” mid-term business plan unveiled today by President Osamu Masuko.
Mitsubishi's factory in Normal, Ill., its only U.S. assembly plant, will pick up new models based on the platform underpinning the Outlander crossover, Outlander Sport small crossover and Lancer sedan. The company plans to announce early next month what model will debut there.
Discontinuing the Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder, Endeavor and Galant sedan is an element of Mitsubishi's plan to build on the company's 3% U.S. sales increase last year after years of steady decline. Despite losing the 4 models from its local lineup, Masuko predicted U.S. sales and production would rise as the company ramps up the new vehicle family.
Sales up
“Our sales in North America will increase,” Masuko said. “We'll still be selling cars brought in from Japan, and we'll be adding the global small car as well.”
Masuko did not give a sales target for the United States. Mitsubishi expects combined sales to the Japanese, North American and European markets to grow by 90,000 units over the next 3 years.
Masuko noted that Mitsubishi's U.S. business will also get a lift from improvement in overall market demand. Masuko added that he intends to keep Mitsubishi's U.S. retail network stable at around 400 dealerships.
Mitsubishi sold 55,683 vehicles in the United States in 2010, up 3% from 2009.
Going green
The new global small car, which Mitsubishi plans to initially build in Thailand, is among the cars Masuko plans to bring to the United States. Another is the Japan-made i-MiEV electric vehicle, which will be labeled “i powered by MiEV” in North America when it goes on sale late this year.
Masuko said Mitsubishi and Nissan Motor Co. are exploring the possibility of jointly developing a 1-ton pickup truck for emerging markets. That comes as Mitsubishi reaches out to competitors such as Nissan and Suzuki Motor Corp. to help it flesh out its lineup with small cars and commercial vehicles.
Masuko said the U.S. overhaul does not include plans for any rebadged vehicles.
Mitsubishi has been without a pickup in the United States since it killed the Raider in 2009. That vehicle was a rebadged Dodge Dakota.
After the new platform enters production in Illinois, Mitsubishi plans to sell half of its output in North America and the rest overseas. The goal is to leverage shipments to dollar zone regions, such as Latin America and the Middle East, where exports from Japan are less competitive.
Emerging markets
Mitsubishi's Jump 2013 plan focuses on rolling out eight electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids, as well as boosting business in emerging markets such as China, Russia and Brazil.
Global sales are seen climbing 37% to 1.37 million vehicles in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, from estimated worldwide volume of 1.0 million units this fiscal year.
The bulk of that increase will come from emerging markets, Mitsubishi says.
Mitsubishi also aims to double operating profit to 90 billion yen ($1.1 billion) in that period.
On the green car front, Mitsubishi said it will launch 8 electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016. The rollout starts this year with a small commercial truck version of its i-MiEV. The lineup is also expected to include a plug-in hybrid SUV based on the Px-MiEV concept car shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

At least he searches
Good luck to Mitsu with trying again, hopefully this time they don't let potential best-sellers stale out.

Looks like just the Lancer and the Outlander. But they're the only two cars that are actually selling anyways. I think they could redo the Eclipse, if they could bring it back to its DSM glory days it'd be a huge hit.

Return of the Diamante
TOKYO -- Could Mitsubishi be bringing back a luxury sedan in the vein of the Diamante?
According to published reports, the troubled automaker plans to sell a rebadged version of the Infiniti M, that brand’s top tier model, in Japan to fill Mitsubishi’s long-running gap in premium offerings.
The plan is under study. But in an interview last month, Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko denied Mitsubishi would leverage OEM manufacturing deals to flesh out its U.S. lineup.
That goes for large luxury cars as well as pickups, he said.
Mitsubishi is shifting to smaller cars because its bigger ones don’t sell well, he added. Plus, exporting a vehicle from Japan makes little sense given the yen’s climb against the dollar.
Still, turning to Nissan for a luxury offering is an intriguing idea. Mitsubishi’s Galant, the model most passable as upper crust, is a slow seller not so much because of its size. The Galant is slow because it’s, well, the Galant -- an aging, humdrum dog that has outlived its appeal.
Mitsubishi has already announced it will phase out the car by 2013.
Diamante sales peaked at 25,267 in 1993 but dipped below 10,000 before Mitsubishi decided in 2004 to kill it. Mitsubishi froze luxury development in the mid-2000s because of financial woes.
But with the Infiniti M, Mitsubishi wouldn’t have to worry about costly r&d. That model, sold as the Nissan Fuga in Japan, is Nissan Motor Co.’s top-shelf flagship, and it is fresh off a full model change in late 2009. Plus, the Infiniti M has a new hybrid variant.
It’s tempting to wonder if that might emerge as the mysterious hybrid vehicle Mitsubishi plans to introduce in 2013.
According to Japan’s Nikkei business daily, the Mitsubishi-badged Fuga could go on sale in Japan as early as this year.

Update
We first heard back in January that Mitsubishi was planning to kill off the Eclipse, Endeavor and Galant by 2013. Now, however, AutoWeek is reporting that the euthanization timeline is a lot closer to summer, with only the Galant receiving a reprieve.
Mitsubishi North America CEO Yoichi Yokozawa has reportedly confirmed that the automaker will stop production on the Eclipse and Endeavor in August, but added that a determination on the Galant won't happen until later. The vehicles are currently being built in Mitsubishi's Illinois assembly plant, but the automaker is looking to make room for the Outlander Sport. Mitsubishi plans to make 50,000 copies per year of the crossover utility vehicle, with half the vehicles tabbed for export.
If you're looking to get your hands on one of the last Endeavor models, you'd better hurry, since Mitsubishi only has a 23-day supply of the outdated model. The Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder will probably take a while to peter out, though, as the automaker currently has a 180-day supply of the coupe and convertible. Either way, for tens of thousands of devotees, it's an ignominious end for a once-proud performance model.

Update
TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is getting a new flagship luxury model that could -- in Japan at least -- be a successor to the Diamante sedan that was killed off in 2004.
Under an agreement announced Sept. 22, Mitsubishi will start selling a rebadged version of the Nissan Fuga sedan, known as the Infiniti M in the United States, in Japan next summer.
Mitsubishi said it is not considering selling the vehicle overseas. It also declined to say what the car would be called or what the company’s sales target is.
As part of the agreement, the two companies have also begun negotiations about Nissan receiving a version of Mitsubishi’s Minicab-MiEV all-electric commercial minivan.
The OEM supply deal is just the latest between Mitsubishi and Nissan Motor Co. -- the companies signed a cooperation agreement in December 2010.
Nissan has already agreed to provide its NV200 Vanette compact van to Mitsubishi, and the 2 companies formed a joint venture to make mini vehicles for Japan’s domestic market.
Mitsubishi’s bid to get a rebadged Fuga from Nissan was expected.
President Osamu Masuko said earlier this year the plan was under study. But he denied that that Mitsubishi would leverage OEM manufacturing deals to flesh out its U.S. lineup.
Still, adding an Infiniti-based offering could spice up its offerings in North America. Mitsubishi’s aging Galant is the current top rung offering in the United States. Mitsubishi has already announced it will phase out the car by 2013.
Mitsubishi’s previous flagship, the Diamante, saw its sales peak at 25,267 in 1993. But volume dipped below 10,000 before Mitsubishi decided in 2004 to kill it.
Mitsubishi froze luxury development in the mid-2000s because of financial woes.
