It’s Official: MINI is Going Rally Racing in the WRC

(Updated) It’s official, MINI is making a comeback on the international rally circuit. Starting in 2011, MINI will compete in selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and will go on to contest the entire season from 2012 onwards. Sources are telling us that MINI has made a 3-4 year commitment (to start) with the program. This are the first official steps back into the highest levels of rally racing since MINI won the Monte Carlo 1,000 Lakes Rally and Acropolis Rally in 1967.

But what about the established players in the WRC? Does MINI even have a chance? The short answer is more of a chance than you’d think. There are two big things in MINI’s favor. First are the WRC regulations that will effectively level the playing field and introduce a new engine configuration (more on that in a minute). The second is the fact that the Countryman WRC is being built by Prodrive, the most successful rally outfit of the past 20 years. You can read more about Prodrive here in our recent feature on the company: “Why the Prodrive WRC MINI Countryman is Important“

As expected the car that will be competing is the MINI Countryman WRC and as we’ve reported it is being developed by Prodrive. The race car (design in close cooperation with MINI) will be heavily based on the production Countryman. But here’s where it gets even more interesting. At the heart of the racing car is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine from BMW Motorsport. The car complies with the new Super2000 regulations put in place by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which stipulate the use of turbo engines with 1,600 cc displacement and four-wheel drive combined with an increased emphasis on road relevant technologies over previous WRC regulations. The result is a significant 25 per cent reduction in overall costs. The first test drive for the MINI Countryman WRC, which will also be available to customer teams, is planned for autumn 2010.

That last bit shouldn’t go unnoticed. We expect several privateer teams to invest into the MINI Countryman WRC and run the cars alongside MINI.

Drivers linked to the car are rumored to be Norwegian rally protege Mads Ostberg and rally legend Marcus Gronholm.

One final thing. If you like the look of this car stay tuned. Rumors persist that MINI will build a special edition JCW Countryman WRC with similar looks and surprising performance.

Official Press Release: This decision sees MINI continue its success story in the world of rallying. In the 1960s, the MINI Cooper S caused a sensation with victories at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. The company also tasted success on many occasions in the European Rally Championship. Having already demonstrated the sporty character of its models in many countries in the MINI CHALLENGE, the brand is now taking its presence in motorsport to a new level with the commitment to the WRC.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, says: “I am delighted MINI will be represented on one of the most popular stages in international motorsport. The success enjoyed on the rally circuit has made a vital contribution to the image of the brand. MINI customers have always shown great interest in motorsport. I am convinced we will add a few more chapters to our success story in rallying. The MINI Countryman provides an excellent basis, from which to create a competitive racing car for the world championship. In Prodrive, we have a strong and experienced partner. We will work hard together over the coming months to ensure we get the project on track right from the word go.”

“This is a very exciting new motorsport programme,” said Prodrive Chairman, David Richards. “During the 1960s MINI captured the imagination of the world when the tiny car took on the might of V8 powered Fords and won what was then one of the toughest motorsport events, the 4000km Monte Carlo rally. I believe our new MINI will become a firm favourite of the latest generation of rally fans, just as it is adored by its millions of owners across the world. We already have a significant number of confirmed customer orders for the new MINI rally car with the first deliveries scheduled for the start of the 2011 season.” Prodrive has been working on developing the MINI Countryman WRC since early 2009. The company was formed in 1984 by Richards, who won the World Rally Championship as co-driver to Ari Vatanen (FI) three years earlier. Based in Banbury (GB), Prodrive has developed into a leading independent company in the motorsport and automobile sector under Richards’ guidance, and today employs over 500 staff. Prodrive’s many successes currently include six overall victories in the World Rally Championship, five titles in the British Touring Car Championship and three class victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours (FR).

BMW was present when the World Rally Championship made its debut back in 1973. Achim Warmbold (DE) and Jean Todt (FR) tasted victory in their BMW 2002 at the Alpenfahrt Rally in Austria. However, MINI’s tradition in this discipline stretches back even further: Pat Moss (GB) clinched the first victory with the MINI 850 at the 1959 Mini Miglia National Rally. MINI ultimately enjoyed its finest hours at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967: the MINI Cooper S celebrated three overall victories at the most iconic rallying event in the world. Paddy Hopkirk (IR, 1964), Timo Mäkinen (FI, 1965) and Rauno Aaltonen (FI, 1967) joined the list of winners at this prestigious event. In 1965, “Rally Professor” Aaltonen also won the European Rally Championship. Tony Ambrose (GB) and Mäkinen finished second and third to round off an excellent overall result for the MINI Cooper S. In addition, MINI drivers also enjoyed many individual wins at renowned rallies throughout Europe. The last BMW World Rally Championship victory was achieved in 1987 in Corsica by Bernard Béguin (FR) driving a BMW M3 which was built and run by Prodrive.

From 2011, over 40 years down the line, the MINI Countryman WRC will be charged with adding further chapters to this success story. It bridges the gap between the classic MINI concept and a contemporary Sports Activity Vehicle. The brand’s first model to feature four doors and a wide-opening tailgate, it offers more space – which can be used in a wide variety of ways – to go with its raised seating position and optimised ride comfort. Plus, the “go-kart” feeling for which MINI is a byword has been preserved and takes on a new dimension with the optional MINI ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. The MINI Countryman expresses the defining virtues of the brand in terms of design, premium quality, handling, efficiency and the scope for customisation – and does so in an absorbingly individual way.

The next step down from the racing version is the MINI Cooper S Countryman. With its twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection now complemented by fully variable valve management, the 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in the range-topping model offers by far the best balance between output and fuel consumption in its displacement class. The engine generates an impressive 135 kW/184 bhp and allows the MINI Cooper S Countryman to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. Furthermore, the MINIMALISM concept sees wide-ranging technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions – such as Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start/Stop function, Shift Point Display and the need-based operation of ancillary components – fitted as standard and in model-specific combinations.

The MINI Cooper S Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman can be ordered as an option with MINI ALL4 permanent all-wheel drive. Here, an electromagnetic centre differential positioned directly on the final drive varies the distribution of power seamlessly between the front and rear axles. In normal driving conditions up to 50 per cent of the drive is sent to the rear wheels, in extreme situations as much as 100 per cent. The result is a new, traction-led expression of the agile handling for which MINI is famed.

We're shopping for a new ride for her. It's come down to the X1 and the Countryman...with the latter in the lead because she is absolutely in love with the look and interior.

The only issue is the long-term effectiveness and utility of the Countryman. Despite the extra space, is it feasible to haul kids stuff...? The X1 would be in the lead simply because of the cargo space it has.

The wife doesn't care that the BMW has more HP than the Countryman S.

That's a weird one with BMW.

Anyhow, the Countryman's based off of it. Same car in some ways...and well, with what we need, same price. Maybe I should start a poll in Car Talk?

Post 2013 Mini Countryman

Press release...

In the two years since its launch onto the world’s car markets, the MINI Countryman has developed into a driving force behind the continuing growth of the brand. The transference of
hallmark MINI qualities and values into a new vehicle segment has won over new target groups worldwide to the brand’s unmistakable style. Autumn 2012 will see the British carmaker’s first model to off all-wheel drive benefiting from an extensive round of modifications which will further enhance the allure of its boundless driving fun.

Detailed refinements to the car’s design and the selection of materials available for the interior shine the spotlight brightly on a premium character none of the MINI Countryman’s rivals can match. The spacious five underlines its very modern appreciation of practicality. The modifications designed for the MINI Countryman will be rolled out across all model variants from November 2012 front doors and the newly designed rings encircling the Centre Speedo and four air vents immediately stand out. They will now be presented across the board in the colour shade Carbon B also have an inner ring in high
Line Interior option – in chrome. Both in standard trim and with options specified, the fresh appeal of the colours and materials adds further lustre to the high interior.

Newly designed door inserts also help to enhance the car’s premium ambience, comfort and practicality. Remodelled door armrests provide even more comfortable support for the arms, and the
controls for the electric windows are now also positioned in the door trim.

A full control panel is integrated into the door armrest on the driver’s side. The switches clustered here include the controls for all the windows, the deactivation facility for the rear window controls and
adjustment for the exterior mirrors. Moving the window controls away from the centre console also optimises access to the larger storage compartment below it. From autumn 2012 the MINI Countryman will come as standard with a three individual seats will be available.

As well as changes to the range of interior colours, interior trim elements and Colour Lines, the selection of exterior paint finishes will also be given a refresh in autumn 2012. New additions include the suitably expressive colour shades Brilliant Copper and Blazing Red metallic. Plus, a restructuring of the equipment packages on offer to customers will make it even easier to customise the MINI
Countryman to reflect their tastes.

Customers can choose from six engine variants for the MINI Countryman. The three petrol and three diesel units produce outputs stretching from 66 kW/90 hp to 135 kW/184 hp. Beyond these, there is also the ultra-sporty MINI John Cooper Works Countryman, powered by a turbocharged 160 kW/218 hp engine. The ALL4 all-wheel-drive system fitted as standard on this top-class performance variant is also available as an option for the MINI Cooper S Countryman, MINI Cooper SD Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman. All models, with the exception of the MINI One D Countryman, can be ordered with a six-speed automatic gearbox as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual. The impressive efficiency of the engines and gearboxes along with extensive MINIMALISM technology ensure all the MINI Countryman variants achieve an exemplary balance between driving fun and fuel economy. Added to which, from autumn 2012 the MINI One Countryman and MINI Cooper Countryman will meet the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust emissions standard due to come into force in 2014.

Post 2013 Mini Countryman ALL4 Camp Concept

This is cool...! Hope MINI produces this.

Press release...

[img]Finding overnight accommodation can be a real headache, especially for drivers who have taken a spontaneous trip to a festival or beach. But there’s no need to worry about finding the perfect place to bed down when travelling in this MINI. Even when completely off the beaten track, all the owner has to do is head upstairs.

The innovative roof-top tent is showcased above a MINI Countryman which, thanks to its intelligent all-wheel drive system ALL4, is well-suited to travelling over rough terrain. But this simple and practical sleeping solution can easily be mounted on a MINI or MINI Clubman. The upper half of the tent is simply folded out of its storage box. Plump up the pillows and two occupants are ready to relax, then wake up to a perfect view of the ocean, mountain or valley.

How about an early morning ride out to buy breakfast? It’s easily done because a mountain bike can be easily transported on the specially fitted bicycle rack.

The roof-top tent quickly folds away into its box when it’s not needed. The exterior has been painted in Absolute Black metallic with white stripes to match the car beneath.

Well that's different.

I saw a new Countryman last weekend. Not a fan of "COUNTRYMAN" across the hatch. If I got one, that'd be the first thing to come off. Same with the Paceman.

Post 2015 Mini Countryman Park Lane

Press release...

Bold athletic flair and supreme versatility define the character of the MINI Countryman. As the first MINI with four doors, a large tailgate, five seats and optional all-wheel drive, it took on the role of an irresistible front-line force from the very outset - both in the conquest of additional target groups for the British premium brand and in the area of off-road driving. Its irrepressible forward thrust and flexibility are now expressed even more strikingly in an exclusive edition model. The MINI Countryman Park Lane sees its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2015. It will be available worldwide in up to four engine variants from July 2015.

The MINI Countryman has enabled the brand to establish a secure standing in the premium compact segment. Unmistakable design, premium quality, an interior concept of exemplary versatility and typical MINI driving fun both on and off the road go together to create an overall package that is unique in this category of vehicle, meeting the multi-faceted mobility needs of demanding target groups in urban traffic and beyond. In this way the MINI Countryman has successfully asserted itself as an all-round talent with individual style. For the first time, this special status within the competitive environment is now underscored with an edition model. A distinct design and colour concept as well as high-end equipment features make the MINI Countryman Park Lane an authentic ambassador for versatile driving fun in the compact segment.

The MINI Countryman Park Lane indicates its high-end individual flair at first sight with a specially developed design and colour concept. The body finish in Earl Grey metallic is combined with the entirely new colour variant Oak Red for the roof and exterior mirror caps, supplemented with optional sport stripes in the same colour for the bonnet, tailgate and lower side sections. The characteristic side turn indicator surrounds in chrome known as side scuttles also comprise an inlay in Oak Red. The MINI Countryman Park Lane boldly accentuates its classic athletic character with 18-inch light alloy wheels in Turbo Fan Dark Grey design and the MINI ALL4 Exterior visual package including silver body elements for the front and rear apron as well as the side sills.

Exclusive emblems on the side scuttles and the cockpit surface bear the inscription "Park Lane", as do the entry sills. The interior surfaces in Oxide Silver for the door bezel and cockpit trim and Cross Stripe Grey for the side surrounds of the centre console were also designed exclusively for the MINI Countryman Park Lane. These go together with the inlay colour Carbon Black for the door trim and centre console to create a sports-style premium ambience in the interior.

The edition model can also be combined with a particularly high-end equipment package. As the MINI Countryman Park Lane Chili, the all-rounder additionally comprises features such as LED fog lamps and white direction indicators. The Chrome Line Exterior is available as an optional extra at no additional charge. What is more, the models MINI Cooper S Countryman, MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4, MINI Cooper SD Countryman and MINI Cooper SD Countryman ALL4 are fitted with xenon lights. The interior fittings are supplemented with sports seats in the fabric/leather finish Parallel Lines Light Tobacco, automatic air conditioning, an on-board computer, a rain sensor with automatic driving light control, the Sport Button, a sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons, velour floor mats and a storage and lighting package.

Located in the London borough of Mayfair, Park Lane is one of the most distinguished addresses in the British capital. MINI itself has a prestigious showroom there. It is the third time that Park Lane has lent its name to an exclusive edition model of the brand. A version of the classic Mini with particularly high-end fittings bore the designation in 1987, while another MINI Park Lane came out in 2005, following in the footsteps of its predecessor after the brand's relaunch. Now the tradition of naming design and edition models made by the British premium automobile manufacturer after London streets and districts is applied to the MINI Countryman for the first time.

The precisely coordinated exterior and interior features of the MINI Countryman Park Lane underscore both the versatile functionality and the exclusive charisma of the premium compact model. With its high-end features and versatile customisation options, this all-round talent offers five seats, including a rear seat that can be shifted longitudinally and has a folding backrest with a 40 : 20 : 40 split. As a result the luggage volume can be expanded from 350 to up to 1 170 litres as required, allowing the MINI Countryman not just to tackle the challenges of everyday urban traffic but also transport bulky sports equipment or carry everything required for a family holiday.

Powerful, efficient engines and high-quality suspension technology ensure that the hallmark brand agility known as the go-kart feeling is brought to life in the compact segment, too - further enhanced by an additional facet with the permanent all-wheel drive system ALL4 that was developed especially for MINI. What is more the car's raised seating position offers a supreme view of the road, giving the characteristic MINI drive feel a whole new dimension. For the MINI Countryman (combined fuel consumption: 7.3 - 4.2 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 169 – 111 g/km) there are three petrol and three diesel engines available, covering an output range of 66 kW/90 hp to 140 kW/190 hp. Four power units can be optionally combined with ALL4. Over and above this, the 160 kW/218 hp MINI John Cooper Works Countryman provides extreme driving fun: here the engine power is transmitted to all four wheels as standard.

The MINI Countryman Park Lane is offered in up to eight model variants, depending on the market. The edition model is available both with the characteristic MINI front-wheel drive as well as the all-wheel drive system ALL4. 4-cylinder petrol engines with 90 kW/122 hp or 140 kW/190 hp power the models MINI Cooper Countryman and MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4 as well as the MINI Cooper S Countryman and MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4. 4-cylinder diesel engines deliver 82 kW/112 hp in the MINI Cooper D Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman ALL4, and 105 kW/143 hp in the MINI Cooper SD Countryman and MINI Cooper SD Countryman ALL4.

Revealed: the brand-new Mini Countryman

Revealed: the brand-new Mini Countryman | Top Gear

The MkII all-new Mini Countryman gets its public launch at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month. Presumably because Angelenos are so deeply into their alt-propulsion vehicles, the first version is a plug-in hybrid. It goes by the name of Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4.

Decoding those suffixes, you get a good idea what it’s all about. Cooper S because it’s got plenty of power: a total of 224bhp when the petrol engine and the e-motor are harnessed together. And the E bit shows it’s a plug-in hybrid. And the All4 is because – some of the time at least – you get AWD.

As to the Countryman bodystyle, are we alone in observing it wears its bigness better than the the outgoing one? A pair of a creases above the front and rear wheels give it a crisp muscle.

Like the Clubman, the Countryman now sits on the BMW group UKL2 platform, which means a growth in width, as well as loadsa tech and connectivity.

The propulsion, like the platform, is shared with the BMW 225xe. That means a three-cylinder 136bhp petrol Mini Cooper engine up front with a six-speed autobox. The rear wheels get the 88bhp single-gear electric motor.

The Mini is supposed to get a better all electric range than the 225xe, at 25 miles until the 7.6kWh battery is depleted. Assuming you drive like you’re utterly terrified of the throttle pedal. It will actually go all-electric up to nearly 80mph, but that won’t help the range any.

The battery is under the back seat, and so’s the fuel tank, but it crunches the tank down to just 35 litres, so the long-journey range won’t be great.

Still, in a Countryman crossover, the case for AWD is a bit stouter than with the BMW people-mover.

And performance is worthy of the Cooper S badge: 0-62 takes 6.9 seconds, they claim. But since the electric power trails off at high speed, expect the fast-lane acceleration to be rather more flaccid.

Of course the new Countryman will also come in conventional flavours with the usual range of Mini petrol and diesel engines and normal propshaft 4WD.

I like the facelift with the smaller headlights, but dislike the new style of the model stamped across the back.
Also those seats on the JCW.

https://www.carscoops.com/2019/02/20...2-hp-four-pot/

The 2020 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman and Countryman are reportedly going to be much more powerful than the current models thanks to a new, 302 hp four-cylinder engine.

Mini has been working on the new performance-focused Clubman and Countryman for quite some time, and according to Motoring File, the duo will feature the same powertrain as the BMW X2 M35i. BMW hasn’t specified what engine the new Clubman and Countryman JCW will use. but admitted that it is indeed working on the cars.

“The updated JCW Countryman and Clubman, I’m thrilled those are coming to market. I think it’ll be a reminder for everyone that fun to drive is what drives this brand,” Mini USA head of marketing Pat McKenna said.

The X2 M35i engine, officially dubbed the B48A20T1, displaces 2.0 liters and features a turbocharger for an output of 302 hp between 5000 rpm and 6250 rpm, while torque sits at 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) from 1750 rpm to 4500 rpm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive AWD system.

If the new JCW Mini Clubman and Countryman adopt the same engine, they will be significantly quicker than the outgoing models which utilize a 228 hp four-pot. Unfortunately, the inclusion of this new engine and all-wheel drive system may see the British automaker abandon a manual gearbox in favor of an 8-speed auto. While that’s sad, there’s talk that Mini will fit a Torsen limited-slip differential up front, which should help with power delivery and improve agility and handling.

The new JCW Mini Clubman and Countryman are expected to be released in the coming months before going on sale in the U.S. shortly after.

Desperately needed. The S models are noticeably slow as compared to something like the GTI. I was pretty disappointed with the automatic Clubman S.
Didn't drive the JCW at the time, was out of budget.

Irresistible character matured on the race track. The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman brings its qualities to bear both on the road and on unpaved terrain. The outstanding power of its 225 kW/306 hp 4-cylinder turbocharged engine is transferred to the road via an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and ALL4 all-wheel drive as standard - a combination that guarantees extreme performance on all types of surface. The extreme driving pleasure package is rounded off by suspension technology featuring the John Cooper Works racing know-how. Modified design, refined equipment and additional options bring out the sporty and exclusive character of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman to the full.

Engine power meets versatility: The new high-performance athlete for the premium compact segment occupies the top position in both disciplines of the British premium brand's model range. It offers unbridled power and plenty of room for experiencing the thrill of racing in everyday driving. In addition, the expressive exterior has now been refined and fresh accents have been added to the high-quality interior. The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman will be launched in November 2020.

With four doors and a large tailgate, five full-size seats, a variable-use interior and a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded up to 1 390 litres, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman can not only master daily transport tasks in city traffic, but also meet all comfort demands on longer journeys. The most powerful engine ever used in a standard MINI, the intelligently controlled all-wheel drive and the differential lock on the front wheels integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission ensure superior performance at all times.

Equipped with specific modifications to the basic engine, advanced MINI TwinPower Turbo technology and an independent cooling system, the drive unit impresses not only with its maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp, but also with its maximum torque of 450 Nm. The spontaneous power delivery, which is sustained into high load ranges, enables the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds (preliminary figure). Speed burst manoeuvres are accompanied by the striking sound of the model-specific sport exhaust system. The tailpipes with an enlarged diameter of 95 mm are real eye-catchers, too.

In order to ensure not only hallmark agility, but also particularly high steering precision and handling that can be masterfully controlled even in highly dynamic driving situations, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman features a body structure and a connection with the chassis, which is characterised by high rigidity. In addition to model-specifically modified components, the chassis also features suspension and damping features refined with racing expertise, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and electromechanical steering. As an option, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman can be equipped with an adaptive chassis. Its standard equipment includes a sports brake system with 4-piston fixed caliper disc brakes on the front wheels and single-piston floating-caliper disc brakes on the rear wheels, as well as 18-inch John Cooper Works light-alloy wheels with brake callipers painted in Chili Red.

The aerodynamically optimised exterior features also contribute to the superior performance of this versatile athlete. The powerful charisma of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is now even more intensively emphasised with the redesign of the radiator grille. The standard LED headlights and the rear lights have been newly designed. At the front, the high-quality lighting technology is now even more recognisable, while at the back the Union Jack light design is an irresistible eye-catcher. The Adaptive LED headlamps with variable light distribution and matrix function for the high beam lights are optionally available. The exterior colours White Silver metallic and Sage Green metallic as well as the option Piano Black Exterior are new. Here, the headlamp surrounds, rear lights and radiator grille are finished in high-gloss black instead of chrome, as are the door handles and the model lettering on the luggage compartment lid.

The interior also features new accents. The sports car flair of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is now combined even more extensively with a modern premium ambience. The digital instrument display behind the steering wheel with a diameter of 5.0 inches is a new optional equipment component. The optional Connected Media equipment in the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman also includes an 8.8-inch colour display with touchscreen function in the characteristic central instrument panel, which now features even higher quality design. In its new version, it has a bezel and touch-sensitive control panels with high-gloss Piano Black surfaces.

Thanks to a SIM card installed as standard, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is "always online". This enables the use of numerous digital services. The MINI Navigation Plus option also provides real-time traffic data, the MINI Online Internet Portal, Apple CarPlay preparation and the seamless integration of the Amazon Alexa voice assistant among other things.

https://www.carscoops.com/2022/04/lo...-big-for-2024/

Spy photographers spend their lives skulking in bushes and taking pictures of still-secret cars like the 2024 Mini Countryman Cooper S. But on this occasion, the angry driver of the Cooper S gave our man a taste of his own medicine and started taking pictures of him with his smartphone.

We’re not sure if Stefan is rocking a facelift for 2024 because even we don’t know what he looks like. But we do know that the next generation Countryman is going to grow significantly in size to liberate more interior space for passengers. And it looks like the hot Cooper S version has grown a set of quad tailpipes judging by the exhaust tips poking out from under this prototype’s bumper.

The next Countryman shares its FAAR platform with the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer sold in Europe and will be built in the same Leipzig, Germany, plant as that model and the next BMW X1 crossover, which also rolls on the same architecture. According to intel from Autocar, the third-generation Countryman could grow by 7.9 inches (200 mm) in length versus today’s model, moving it into a battle with bigger vehicles like the Nissan Qashqai.

Mini is claimed to be planning a Chinese-built sister crossover to the Countryman that will be a pure EV, which means the Countryman itself will be restricted to ICE, mild-hybrid, and PHEV powertrains. Most cars will be front-wheel drive with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gas motor kicking off the range, as it does today.

Other options are rumored to include 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel-fuelled four-cylinder engines, and a pair of plug-in hybrids, including an all-wheel-drive version powered by a combination of the 1.5-liter triple and a 172 hp (174 PS) electric motor, giving a combined output of 318 hp (322 PS) and a potential electric driving range of 55 miles (89 km).

How Mini will badge such a performance flagship remain unclear. This prototype’s quad exhausts and mono-bloc brake calipers suggest it’s a serious performance derivative, at the very least, a Cooper S. But the lack of hybrid markings legally required on German test cars suggests it’s a plain ICE-powered model.

Inside the cabin, Countryman drivers will be treated to a large central touchscreen, a small digital instrument pack, and updated switchgear, which appears to include a fake ignition key located in the center of the dashboard, where it lived on 1960s Minis. But with touchscreens, all-wheel drive, an EV mode, and the kind of power even supercars couldn’t muster in the original Mini’s heyday, that’s about all the new car will have in common with its namesake.

Compared to the R50 rebirth, these should be called MAXI instead of MINI.
Wouldn't mind an R50 Cooper S for a toy, but am about to have drastically less vehicular storage for a while.

Higher, longer, MINI - with an additional six centimetres in height and thirteen centimetres in length, the new MINI Countryman has grown noticeably compared to its predecessor. With wider wheel arches, characteristic charisma and a modern minimalist design with clearly designed surfaces, the car now has a significantly enhanced presence.

In the interior, the robust MINI adventurer offers even more space, comfort and safety - Even off the beaten track thanks to all-wheel drive. The new MINI Experience Modes and expanded driving assistant systems including the voice-controlled MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant make excursions in the new MINI Countryman even more comfortable and entertaining. The all-electric drivetrain contributes to this too, further enhancing the brand's hallmark driving fun with two levels of power output. As the first MINI made in Germany, the model also breaks new ground in terms of production.

The 4,433 mm long, 1,843 mm wide and 1,656 mm high MINI Countryman is both a stylish all-rounder and a spacious everyday companion. Thanks to the wheelbase, which has been increased to 2,692 mm, comfort has been further increased. The all-electric MINI Countryman is available in two performance levels: As a MINI Countryman E with an output of 150 kW/204 hp and a torque of 250 Nm, it has a range of 462 km. The MINI Countryman SE ALL4 with 230 kW/313 hp and 494 Nm has achieved a wide of 433 km.

In its electrified third generation, the largest model in the new MINI family, continues the brand's journey into an era of locally emission-free electric mobility. The compact crossover model has been on course for success ever since its market launch in 2010, with five doors and - new for MINI at the time - more than four metres in length. No wonder: after all, the optional all-wheel drive of this powerfully motorised adventurer ensures safe and unbridled driving fun - even off the beaten track.

"With the all-electric MINI Countryman, the largest model in the new MINI vehicle family takes the brand into an era of locally emission-free electric mobility. The first MINI to be manufactured in Germany also offers the highest possible level of environmental compatibility in production. Its versatility and powerful electric drive make it the perfect companion in the city as well as for adventures beyond," says Stefanie Wurst, Head of MINI.

The new MINI design language: Charismatic Simplicity

The design of the new MINI model generation is modern, digital and unmistakable. With the new MINI family, the brand takes driving fun, the user experience and a responsible attitude forward into a new era. This comprehensive transformation on the way to becoming an all-electric brand by 2030 is reflected in the authentic design of the new models, combining progressive technology with the elementary principles of the brand's body design and origins. In doing so, it incorporates the urban character of MINI along with the sheer joy of innovation.

"The new MINI Countryman is our vehicle for the whole family. In its latest generation, it has not only grown in height, length and interior - it has also noticeably improved in character, appearance and experience. It is now even more present, more spacious and more stable. His presence on the front is reflected in the upright proportions and vertical orientation of the design language. Its solid and stable character is also immediately recognizable by the more distinctive radiator grille, distinctive headlights and its very sculptural bonnet," says Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design.

The exterior design: expressive minimalism with character

With its upright and minimalist silhouette, the new MINI Countryman embodies the adventurous flair, versatility and reliability of a compact crossover vehicle. The car's expressive off-road character is defined by typical MINI proportions, ensuring the new MINI Countryman has high recognition value. Short overhangs, a short bonnet and the contrasting long wheelbase with large wheels combine classic MINI design features with an athletically grown body.

In addition, the new design of the MINI Countryman embraces improved aerodynamics in order to achieve environmentally friendly consumption figures based on this aspect of the vehicle as well. The result is an impressive cd value of 0.26 for the all-electric MINI Countryman - compared to 0.31 in the predecessor model. As such, the next-generation MINI crossover model achieves a new optimum in comparison with its competitors, embracing clever vehicle design with a minimal footprint.

The modern exterior design is supported by clear-cut surfaces, a slightly curved roof with a seamless transition to the newly designed C-pillar in a trim-specific shape, and the characteristic circumferential Black Band. The distinctive C-pillar element creates a new, highly visible stage for differentiating between different models, equipment options and subsequent editions. The design depends on the selected equipment and thus differentiates between the equipment variants. Graphics and lettering are minimalistic, blend harmoniously with the bas-relief and also match the color of the selected contrasting roof.

Reduction to the essentials results in hallmark MINI design features such as the visual three-part division in vehicle body, a circumferential window area and a contrasting roof having an even greater impact, allowing the new design language to develop a powerful presence.

MINI LED headlights with Signature Modes: striking radiance thanks to individual light modes

The front end of the all-electric MINI Countryman is defined by the expressive contour of the new octagonal front grille. A particularly small radar sensor is integrated flush into its surface to support the increased functionality of the driver assistant systems.

In the new model generation, the MINI Countryman is the first vehicle with Level 2 assistance systems that enable semi-automated driving. Certain design details in the vehicle front vary depending on the chosen trim level. For example, the Favoured Trim places the spotlight on the new Vibrant Silver accent colour for exterior details.

The daytime running light elements of theLED lights support this striking look with fresh radiance due to unique light signatures. Optionally, the daytime running light elements can be switched to create three light signatures in the front and rear LED lights, thereby reinforcing the distinctive character of each vehicle. In addition, all light modes start and end with a specially orchestrated welcome and goodbye animation. This interaction with the vehicle increases the anticipation of the MINI even before you set off.

Purist design for a powerful presence and increased dynamic performance

As with the body design as a whole, the front headlights are not framed with chrome elements anymore, which results in the front section having a focused expression. Together with the tautly curved bonnet, the slightly wider track and the raised body, the most versatile MINI exudes superior robustness.

Viewed from the side, the new MINI Countryman has a minimalist appearance with a powerful presence. The circumferential Black Band is narrower than on the predecessor. The distinctive design of the C-pillar supports the roofline at the rear of the vehicle while at the same time making it appear shorter. This makes the entire vehicle body look more upright, emphasising the character of the new MINI Countryman. Rims of up to 20 inches in various designs add to the robust appearance. The focus is much more on the body color generating an elegant appearance.

As a result of the new MINI aesthetic, the rear section has an especially consistent appearance with its clear surfaces and flush rear lights. Here, the vertical light cluster quotes the classic MINI lights and frames the large central section of the vehicle's rear. This emphasises the wider stance of the new MINI Countryman while at the same time giving the body a particularly high-quality and upright appearance. As with the front headlights, the rear lights are also able to highlight certain vehicle characteristics by means of different modes. The pronounced shoulder section reinforces the powerful appearance of the new MINI Countryman. The rear tapers off below the model inscription, visually dividing the rear into two sections. The rear apron in the lower area emphasises the solid stance of the vehicle, while the generous surfaces in the upper area make the vehicle look lighter.

Four individual trims and new roof colours

With Vibrant Silver, a new shade expands the MINI Countryman's range of characteristic contrasting roofs. In addition, the model is available in four different trims. The Essential Trim presents maximum clarity and a reduced overall appearance, highlighting certain functional parts such as the logo in the new colour Vibrant Silver. The new range of external paint finishes underlines the modernity of the new MINI adventurer, setting positive accentuations with bright tones such as Indigo Sunset Blue.

While the Classic Trim primarily applies to the interior, the Favoured Trim features particularly expressive details on the exterior. This trim variant, for example, offers on the new MINI Countryman the option of choosing the new Vibrant Silver shade for the roof matching the contrasting front grille.

Meanwhile the John Cooper Works (JCW) Trim lends maximum emphasis to the sporty flair of the MINI Countryman with a distinctive front and rear design. The front grille frame and logo in high-gloss black emphasise the car's powerful overall impression together with the trim-specific bonnet stripes in red and black. A contrasting roof in Chili Red - inspired by motor sports - along with the striking C-pillar in the same colour and a JCW logo optionally emphasises to the hallmark MINI driving dynamics.

The interior: generous, digital, immersive & warm

The dashboard in the new MINI Countryman works entirely without an additional display behind the steering wheel: all relevant content is projected onto the optional head-up display. This reduction to the essentials opens up the view to the front, shaping the spacious interior with cleverly designed, high-quality components.

Like the new MINI Cooper, the spacious, curved dashboard in Classic, Favoured and JCW trim is also made of textile surfaces for the first time. The new, homely feel-good atmosphere in the MINI Countryman is defined by warm, pleasant materials. A specially developed knitting process is used to create the versatile, easy-care structure of the textile in two-colour design made of recycled polyester. The entire interior is divided into an upper and lower section along a horizontal line below the new round instrument. Above this, all design elements such as the air vents and door handles are vertically aligned, emphasising the character of the vehicle, also in the interior.

Clear shapes in the cockpit and the increased space in the front seats give the interior a modern, airy feel. The driver and front passenger enjoy significantly enhanced comfort in the new MINI Countryman, with almost three centimetres of additional width in the shoulder and elbow area. The shoulder width of the rear seats has also been increased by 2.5 centimetres.

The optional panoramic glass roof makes the interior particularly bright and friendly, with a front half which can be opened. The sport seats are available in a basic version and in a JCW version as well as with an optional electric seat adjustment with memory function. Optionally, the massage function can provide additional relaxation. Between the front seats, the wide, adjustable central armrest enhances the seating comfort.

The rear of the vehicle offers maximum reduction and space. The position of the rear row of seats can be adjusted in length by up to 13 centimetres. This provides either highly comfortable legroom at the rear or additional volume in the luggage compartment.

The backrest of the three rear seats is also individually adjustable in six positions by up to 12 degrees. This means that the seat either offers the option to lean back or else supports an upright sitting posture. With the rear seat folded down, even bulky items can be easily transported in the 460-litre to 1,450-litre luggage compartment. An additional floor compartment provides convenient space for the charging accessories of the all-electric MINI Countryman. The optionally available trailer hitch offers an additional plus in practicality. The trailer hitch can be electrically retracted and extended. The towing capacity is up to 1,200 kg.

The MINI John Cooper Works models have always been known for their exhilarating performance. With its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman embodies this unmistakable driving experience. The new model generation of the spacious and top-performing Countryman has grown noticeably and offers even more space, comfort and safety. Thanks to its ALL4 all-wheel drive system, this new MINI is also very capable off the road. With it's increased versatility and dimensions, the all-new MINI Countryman is now classified as a SUV in the US market.

The new design is characterized by an upright and minimalist silhouette, through which the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman exudes a sense of adventure, versatility and reliability. The John Cooper Works logo has also been redesigned with a modern, clearcut look. For the first time, this all-new logo is being used on the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman in the classic black, red, and white color scheme.

With its sleek design, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman has a drag coefficient of just 0.26, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class. This helps the engine, which generates 312 hp (in US trim) to accelerate the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 5.4 seconds. The 295 lb.-ft. of torque and top speed of 155 mph make for an exhilarating driving experience.

Exceptional performance makes dynamic driving a joy

The standard all-wheel drive system distributes its power precisely and reliably in every driving situation. A high-performance braking system with brake calipers in Chili Red color ensures powerful and precise deceleration. The characteristic sound of the exhaust flap system also makes the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman instantly recognizable as a high-performance model. Inside, the engine sound generated in real time enhances the emotional driving experience. An exclusive JCW sound extension boosts the sound of the engine start and intensifies the soundscape with racing-inspired engine sounds.

Optimized pistons, connecting rods and engine mounts extract maximum power from the two-litre turbo engine. An advanced, dual-drive exhaust turbocharger supercharges the engine. Together with the dethrottled air intake to the combustion chamber, this enables the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman to generate beefy performance, delivering an even more dynamic driving experience in every turn. The tire diameter, which has been increased by 30 mm, is now 710 mm and the increased tire width of 245 mm enhances the typical MINI go-kart feeling. Aerodynamically optimized 19 and 20-inch wheels, exclusive to JCW, round off the extensive range.

Advanced assistance systems provide added comfort

The new MINI JCW Countryman features 12 ultrasonic sensors and four surround-view cameras in total. They support the innovative driver assistance systems and enable partially automated Level 2 driving in the comprehensive Driving Assistant Professional option package. The assistant can detect gaps in the traffic necessary for changing lanes such as when heading towards an exit, and brings the vehicle to the optimum speed for the assisted lane change. For the first time, drivers in the MINI Countryman can take their hands off the steering wheel on highway-like routes at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), provided they continue to keep a close eye on traffic and remain ready to intervene at any time.

Great stature on any terrain

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman has a bold and sporty look that reflects its performance and versatility. The exterior features a number of model-specific details that enhance its overall appearance. For example, the aerodynamic elements with vertical reflectors on the front of the vehicle emphasize its wide stance, while the new MINI LED headlights with horizontal bars in JCW Signature Mode give the vehicle a more expressive look. The front end is also characterized by a new octagonal grille design in high-gloss black and the newly designed three-color JCW logo.

The newly designed C-pillar seamlessly joins to the contrasting roof. The roof curves down towards the rear, giving the MINI JCW Countryman an agile silhouette despite its increased height and width.

The high-contrast exterior design, combined with the body color, emphasises the sporty look of the model. At the rear, the upright John Cooper Works Signature Modetail lights frame the upright vehicle body and underscore the the increased width.

Minimalist interior features racing DNA

In the interior, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman inspires with a simplified design. The cockpit is divided into an upper and lower section, with vertical door handles and air vents in the upper area. This emphasizes the upright and larger overall impression of the spacious crossover. The red and black color scheme at the dashboard, along the door panels and on the high-grade JCW sports seats, is a nod to MINI's racing heritage. The dashboard is made of a two-tone textile made from recycled polyester.

The rear of the vehicle is highly versatile and spacious. With the rear seat folded down, even bulky items can be easily transported in the 460 to 1,450 liter luggage compartment. (based on EU measures)

Increased functionality makes for an immersive driving experience

Drivers can use the toggle switches on the MINI toggle bar just below the OLED round screen to control important driving functions in addition to select controls on the steering wheel. The central, high-resolution OLED display is home to all other functions. Here, the driver can also select the new MINI Experience Modes and set up their preferred driving ambience using specially designed backgrounds and sounds. The go-kart mode provides a particularly sporty driving experience, and occupants can hear the engine sound with impressive intensity in the cabin. The MINI projector on the back of the OLED display can be used to bathe the dashboard in atmospheric color schemes and patterns that correspond to the selected Experience Mode.

In addition, occupants can use the voice assistant to operate numerous functions, such as navigation, telephone, and entertainment. Voice-controlled interaction takes place on the circular OLED display in the form of an animation of graphic elements, typography, and an avatar.

The all-new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman will have a starting base price in the US of $46,900 + $995 destination and handing. Production for the US market begins March, 2024 with first units expected to arrive at dealers early May, 2024.

With the introduction of the new models, MINI is describing the performance levels of its gasoline engines for the MINI Countryman with C and, as a more powerful model, with S. A diesel variant is also available. With the MINI Countryman C, the brand combines a high level of driving comfort and spacious room with an efficient 3-cylinder gasoline engine.

"As an entry-level model, the MINI Countryman C combines typical MINI features such as agility and driving pleasure with generous standard equipment," says Stefanie Wurst, head of the MINI brand.

With an output of 125 kW/170 hp, the entry-level model accelerates in 8.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and reaches a top speed of 212 km/h. With 280 Nm of torque and efficient TwinPower Turbo technology, the vehicle has the necessary power and spontaneity for brand-typical driving pleasure. The integrated mild hybrid technology is used to recover braking energy and supports the internal combustion engine during accelerations with 14 kW electric drive power. This reduces the consumption and emissions of the MINI Countryman C.

The exterior: puristic design with increased presence

The new MINI Countryman is 13 centimeters longer and eight centimeters higher than its predecessor. The upright silhouette with clearly designed surfaces and the redesigned octagonal front grille contribute to the model's superior appearance. The reduced body design with delicate contours gives the model a sleek appearance. Typical of the brand, short overhangs underline the agile vehicle character. Distinctive LED headlights and rear lights accentuate the body design with optional new light signatures.

The stylish, concisely designed C-pillar adjoins the stretched vehicle roof flush and in the same colour. Piano Black roof rails are now standard equipment and maximize the transport options of the crossover model, for example with a roof rack or the MINI roof box.

On uneven roads, 202 mm ground clearance and the dynamic chassis provide additional safety and comfort. For the new MINI Countryman C, light-alloy wheels are available in various designs and sizes ranging from 17 to 21 inches.

The interior: spacious and versatile with typical MINI comfort

The spacious interior of the new MINI Countryman can accommodate up to five adults. With a panoramic glass roof, the interior has additional brightness and all-round visibility. The standard sports seats with patterned multi-tone textile in the cockpit give passengers more space thanks to an additional width of three centimetres in the shoulder and elbow area. The backrest of the three rear seats can be individually adjusted in six positions by up to 12° degrees. The back seat, which can be moved up to 13 cm, creates additional legroom in the rear or even more cargo space. Thanks to the rear seat backrest, which can be folded down at a ratio of 40:20:40, the trunk volume of 450 litres to 1460 litres can be easily and flexibly adapted to personal needs.

At the centre of the minimalistic interior design is the round OLED display with a diameter of 240 mm. The new central instrument with a high-quality glass surface allows all infotainment and assistance systems to be operated conveniently and intuitively via touch or voice command. The MINI Experience Modes change the appearance of the cockpit with a combination of visual design, ambient lighting and sound design. All driving functions can be controlled via the characteristic MINI toggle bar.

For the first time, Driving Assistant Plus expands the MINI Countryman with the option of partially automated Level 2 driving on motorway-like routes. This allows the driver to take his hands off the steering wheel up to a speed of 60 km/h, provided that he continues to closely monitor the traffic and remains ready to intervene at any time.

Four trim options for individual expression

The product structure of the new MINI Family offers a wide range of customization options with the new Essential, Classic, Favoured and JCW trim variants. Depending on the trim, different paint and roof colours as well as various interior finishes are available. The design of the new C-pillar element changes with the selected vehicle trim.

The particularly expressive Favoured trim, with the contrasting roof and the Vibrant Silver front grille frame, sets stylish accents to the Smokey Green body colour. 20-inch rims in the aerodynamically optimised Windmill Spoke 2-tone design accentuate the self-confident appearance of the MINI Countryman C.

In the interior, a two-tone colour gradient adorns the textile surface from the dashboard to the door panels. The innovative design is made from recycled polyester using a specially developed knitting process and contributes to the comfortable atmosphere of the interior. In addition to the heated sports steering wheel, the Favoured trim has perforated Vescin sports seats. They are offered in three colours with traditional accent stitching.
