After its very successful introduction into the market, BMW is currently developing a Mini Cooper Convertible. Although too cold for top-down testing, this car was caught in the northern part of Scandinavia during the cold-weather test season. The all-too-cute cabrio is scheduled to hit European roads as early as summer of 2003. U.S. dealerships are hoping the cabrio will arrive before the 2004 model year ends. |

John Cooper Works, the original British company behind the legendary Mini Cooper has developed two new aftermarket and retrofit tuning kits, for the new MINI. The MINI Cooper 'Works' and MINI Cooper S 'Works' will make their world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on March 4 2003. The kits will be available from both the John Cooper Works organisation and all official MINI Dealers from April 2003. Uniquely, having obtained full approval and endorsement from the BMW Group, vehicle warranty and MINI tlc* remain unaffected providing the kit is fitted by an official MINI dealer or by John Cooper Works. Prices of the 'Works' kits will be announced closer to launch. MINI Cooper 'Works' Including features such as a modified cylinder head with higher compression, modified engine electronics, a special air filter and rear silencer the MINI Cooper Works generates a maximum output of 126bhp at 5,750rpm. This is an increase of 11bhp over the standard car. Maximum torque is increased to 155Nm from149Nm and is available at 4,700rpm. This power hike gives the MINI Cooper 'Works' a top speed of 128mph and a 0-62mph sprint of just 8.9 seconds. 50-75mph in fourth gear takes only 10.1 seconds. MINI Cooper S 'Works' By installing an even more powerful and higher revving compressor, the MINI Cooper S 'Works' has become the ultimate officially approved performance MINI. With 200bhp at 6950rpm (an increase of 37bhp over the standard car) and a top speed of 141mph, the MINI Cooper S 'Works' adds up to an impressive package. The generous torque of 240Nm available at 4,000rpm catapults the Cooper S 'Works' from 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds and 50-75mph in 5.6 seconds. John Cooper Works accessories Specially designed sports seats and a 'Works' 18-inch alloy wheel are available for John Cooper Works cars although can be retrofitted to all MINIs. The 18-inch wheel is a star design featuring five widening spokes giving the car a sporty and powerful look. It fits tyre sizes 250/40 R18 with runflat system. The sports seats have been designed to offer superb grip. With a reinforced shoulder area and adjustable thigh support for added comfort, they can also be ordered with seat heating (provided the car being converted was purchased with this option). The 'Works' sports seats are available in the same range of colours as the standard range of MINI seats. Both the sports seats and the 18-inch wheel will be available from all official MINI dealers from April 2003. Prices will be announced closer to launch. |

The John Cooper Works performance pack for the Cooper S arrives Stateside in April, offering 200-hp and 177-lb-ft in exchange for (gulp) approximately $4,500 when you include installation cost. Other Mini tuning kits exist, of course, several of which promise the same (or more) power for less cash. But the “Works” package, also available for the standard Cooper, is the only one that comes through Mini dealers, with factory approval and full manufacturer warranty support. |

Mini News **Speedster on the way (page 2)**

DETROIT — First-year sales of the Mini brand in the United States exceeded expectations by 50 percent, Jack Pitney, general manager of Mini USA, said here Wednesday. Speaking to the Automotive Press Association, Pitney said sales through March totaled 30,000 units vs. a target of 20,000. The brand, a subsidiary of BMW AG, launched in the United States in March 2002. Mini’s brand awareness increased from 12 percent in the Fall of 2001 to 53 percent in December, he said. |

i like the exterior but i don't think the inside is up to bmw standards especially for what they charge for these things. the gti is a better allround car.

The car is to rival the likes of the more potent variants of the Volkswagen Beetle Cabrio. Like its less powerful brothers, the Open will feature an electrically operated canvas top with a heated rear window made of glass and a bottom-hinged tailgate, as it was on the original Mini. The glass window will keep the cabin warmer and quieter at the same time. Front-end and taillights, however, will be unchanged. The MINI Open range will start with an entry-level edition 1.6-litre One with 100 HP, followed by the 1.6-litre Cooper with 115 HP, presumably the biggest seller. The range will be topped by the 160-HP Cooper S pictured here, though an even more potent Cooper Works edition might follow later. Prices are not fixed yet, but we expect a £2,000 premium over the metal-roofed MINI. |

However, as with some of the celebrities who drive the popular little car, it appears BMW is keen to keep the forthcoming cosmetic surgery under wraps. We heard about the changes, which will coincide with the launch of the MINI cabriolet next year, through our industry sources. The idea is to keep the car looking fresh - but when we called the German manufacturer to find out more, it refused to comment. A representative told us bluntly: "We are not prepared to discuss the matter, because there is nothing happening this year." However, we have learned that the modifications will appear at the same time as the unveiling of the soft-topped MINI Open, scheduled to be at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Exact details are still secret, but exterior changes are expected to include a reworked front end with a new grille. Inside, the current instruments are tipped to be replaced by chronometer-style gauges, similar to those used in the Lexus IS200. This indicates that the rev counter could become a separate dial inside the speedo. As a result, the tachometer may well come as standard equipment on the MINI One - it's currently an option, available for £50. |

Top up looks like a HUGE blind spot. Otherwise it looks good with top up and down. I'd pick up a used one in 5 years when they are under $12K. It would make an excellent weekender.

Wednesday 27th October 2004 MINI's Two Seat Speedster These are busy times at MINI. Just weeks after Auto Express revealed the return of the Moke (issue 826) comes news of another addition to the range. Exclusive images in this week's issue reveal the Speedster two-seater, which is set to become the flagship model. Its innovative roof design and supercharged power will see the car battle it out with rivals such as Toyota's MR2 and the Mazda MX-5. Taking the MINI Convertible as its base, the Speedster will have two roof options. Alongside an electrically operated canvas roof, a removable hard-top will also be available. It will extend to the rear of the car, offering extra security and increased protection from the elements, effectively turning the MINI into a coupé. The key to the Speedster's appeal lies in the removal of the rear seats. This has allowed the designers to blend a swooping roofline into a more steeply raked windscreen, while also freeing up vital space to hide the complex fold-ing soft-top. The lack of rear chairs also gives front-seat occupants more room, and there's a bigger boot, too, compared to the exciting Convertible. Under the bonnet, the Speedster will use the same 1.6-litre petrol engine as the standard MINI, with top-of-the-range versions powered by the 170bhp supercharged unit found in the Cooper S. Our sources tell us that the MINI Speedster is not likely to reach showrooms before 2007, in order to avoid harming sales of the MINI Convertible. When it does arrive, expect it to carry a £1,000 premium over the soft-top, with prices starting at around £14,300. The MINI Getrag system transfers all power of the Cooper s engine on optimal traction conditions (travelling straight ahead, dry road) completely to the rear axle. However, as soon as slip arises, an electronic control distributes more power within milliseconds to the front axle. And there is a completely new solution also: Two separated working multiple disk clutches distribute the torque individually to the front wheels, a differential at the front axle thereby becomes redundant. The two clutches also inspired the name of the project: "Twinster" ...While the normal MINI pushes under-steering from the curve or must with stronger turn of the steering wheel be restrained, the Twinster remains neutral. The result shows up on the handling course: on dry roadway the Twinster achieves identical round times despite its weight higher around 80 Kilos (176lbs) like the lighter front wheel drive MINI. During our comparison tests the AWD MINI completed the wet runway approximately ten per cent faster than front wheel driver. Not bad for a prototype, which still needs fine tuning. As mentioned in the previous article about the AWD MINI from AutoWeek.nl indications for production remain positive. BMW development boss Dr. Burkhard Goeschel recently tested the car and was, "rather impressed". |
