SV Supercar doing well

From Autoexpress:

MG Rover might not have many van fans, but the XPower SV has gone down well. Deposits have been received for the 60 cars that will be built this year.

"We've got orders from the Middle East and Australasia, as well as the UK," said a spokesman. Meanwhile, another British two-seater - Aston Martin's DB AR1 - has got the production green light.

From autoexpress:

For sports car fans there is only one star of the British Motor Show 2002 - and this is it. Just a few miles from its base in Birmingham, MG Rover has taken the wraps off its most incredible coupé, the XPower SV. With outrageous styling and a roll cage in every model, even the entry-level car has 325bhp. Flagship versions will boast an astonishing 965bhp and factory-approved nitrous oxide injection kits!

The car pictured, which is wowing the crowds at the firm's NEC stand, is in Club Sport spec and features a 5.0-litre V8. Delivering 465bhp, the Ford-sourced engine is mated to a six-speed Tremec gearbox. Together they are capable of offering more than 200mph. The price for such power? An eye-watering £85,000. The enormous rear wing, functional air vents, twin chromed exhaust tailpipes and 18-inch OZ alloys are the most distinctive features of the rear-wheel-drive car, which is street legal.

Inside, the SV is kitted out with race seats, harnesses, steering wheel and pedals by Sparco. The spare wheel is located behind the seats, along with storage nests for two crash helmets.

The £65,000 entry-level model will get a leather interior and carpeted stowage space behind the seats. Underneath the bonnet will be a 325bhp 4.6-litre V8 mated to a five-speed manual box, powering the car from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a 170mph top speed.

And while that rear wing and front air dam won't be standard, both will be sold as options. That means, apart from the interior, our exclusive shots reveal how the best-selling version will look. Don't expect to see many, though, as MG Rover plans to make only 110 to 120 cars annually over four years.

The SV is based on the firm's X80 concept which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. That in turn was inspired by the Qvale Mangusta, which MG Rover bought the rights to 18 months ago. The SV will go on sale in April, with a 300bhp automatic version available later. A range of models to suit all tastes will also launch next year. Every one, apart from the 'base' 325bhp version, will be a Club Sport, and all can be made road legal.

They start with a 410bhp 5.0-litre V8 variant, but ultimately there will be a 765bhp variant using the engine from MG's ZT Bonneville race car. Power will then be boosted to a staggering 965bhp with nitrous oxide injection. The Bonneville will attempt to break various land speed records on the Utah salt flats in the US next year.

Launching the SV in Birmingham is important for MG Rover, as design director Peter Stevens explained: "It's where we're based and we get enormous support locally. This car tells people that MG is fit and well."

MG SV to battle 911 Turbo on price

MG’s new SV supercar will cost from £75,000 for the standard 320bhp V8 – a full 10 grand more than expected, pitting it against the top of the 911 pile.

Britain’s biggest car maker has confirmed more details of its supercar range, which will be headed by a version running the 765bhp engine that propelled a ZT-T to 226mph on Bonneville salt flats earlier this year.

The supreme MG’s huge price tag hasn’t been settled yet, but estimates put it at significantly above £100,000, and fettling could push power north of 800bhp on customer demand.

The standard 260bhp SV will hit 165mph and covers the 0-60mph dash in 5.3sec. Power comes from Ford’s 4.6-litre quad-cam V8 and is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual ’box and limited-slip diff. An auto version will be added next year, alongside the SV-R which will offer between 385-400bhp.

MG Rover blames the carbonfibre body for the extra cost, but claims the bodyshell is a quarter of the weight of a steel one. However, the SV still weighs in at a hefty 1540kg.

Inside the two-seater cabin are four-belt racing harnesses, a competition rollcage, Sparco racing seats, a choice of six leather finishes and a remote telemetry system that lets Longbridge order parts and arrange repairs and servicing. The SV sits on 18-inch five-spoke OZ alloys coupled with Michelin Pilot Sports.

First customers took delivery earlier this month, and MG Rover says it has taken another 30 deposits.

At a conversion rate of $1.695 per pound, 75k pounds is 127,139. A base 911 carrera 4s AWD with the power package is about $96k...and figure about 10-15k in basic options. Thats still a power car for cheaper...but its not THAT much cheaper I guess considering the people that will be buying it

Now, a base 911 Turbo is about $115k, and again 10-15k for basic options. So if I had $130k to spend, I'd still rather get an AWD car with a ton more power. HOWEVER having said that, subjectively i think the MG looks a lot nicer and more distinctive than the turbo

I think you are not aware of how much a 911 costs in the UK. You are using USA prices which are way lower.

MG XPOWER SV high performance sports car on sale from November 1, 2003

Posted by: kak on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 - 01:06 PM CET

MG Sport & Racing has today announced the sales launch of the MG XPower SV, a car which catapults the Company into competition with the best of the world’s performance vehicle manufacturers. The entry level model is powered by a 320 hp 4.6 litre all aluminium quad cam V8 engine which propels the MG XPower SV to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and on to a top speed of circa 165 mph. Automatic and higher powered SV-R versions will be available next year. Customers can also specify the engine from the 225 mph MG ZT-T Bonneville rated at 765 hp (and beyond if required) which will give top speeds of well over 200 mph and suitably electrifying acceleration.

The first class performance of the SV is complemented by its distinctive interior. In keeping with the vehicle’s sporting heritage both front seats are specified with full inertia four belt harnesses, which are lockable for serious driving by the flick of a switch. Each cabin is trimmed with the customer’s choice of six leather finishes. Competition seats and fascias are available in a combination of leather and Alcantara allowing each vehicle to be uniquely personalised.

Designed by a team led by Peter Stevens, whose previous designs have included the McLaren F1, the MG XPower SV benefits from state of the art technology. Central to the car’s DNA is a finely tuned chassis designed along race car principles bonded to a lightweight carbon fibre body with an integral rollover cage.

The chassis and carbon body are both constructed in the heartland of the Italian supercar industry. Final vehicle assembly takes place at MG Sport & Racing’s newly established HQ at Longbridge, Birmingham by a dedicated team of skilled craftsmen.

Director of MG Sport & Racing Kim Johnson said: "The MG XPower SV, which combines high reserves of power and motor racing safety features, is a true race car which has been built for the road. It can either lead on the track or cruise along the King’s Road. It is the ultimate MG."

Former F1 driver Mark Blundell said: "The MG XPower SV is aggressive and raw, and at the same time stylish and refined. I have driven many of the world’s top sports cars and this car is in the same league. From the unique sound of the exhaust to the precision steering the MG XPower SV has all the qualities I look for in a sports car."

The MG XPower SV line up starts from £75,000 and will be available through a network of specialist XPower dealerships, or directly from the MG Sport & Racing factory.

MG XPOWER SV HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CAR

The entry level MG XPower SV is powered by a 4.6-litre, 320 hp quad cam all-aluminium V8. Higher powered versions will follow, starting with the

SV-R early next year and followed by even more extreme iterations which will include the 765hp Bonneville ZT-T unit.

The SV range features an immensely strong box frame chassis allied to a uniquely constructed carbon fibre body shell which is instrumental in keeping the kerb weight to a competitive 1540kg and the centre of gravity as low as possible.

The MG XPower SV sprints from rest to 60mph in 5.3 secs and on to a top speed of around 165mph.

The range is aimed at individuals who share a passion for high performance sports cars and like to test a car’s abilities to the full. The MG XPower SV is an exhilarating, but above all responsive and well-mannered car that is equally at home driving to the race rack as it is performing on it.

The SV is an all-new design from the team led by Peter Stevens, whose portfolio includes many renowned sports cars, until now pinnacled by the McLaren F1. The steel chassis and double wishbone suspension are fabricated by Vaccari and Bosi in Modena in collaboration with MG Sport and Racing’s chassis development team.

In a bold departure from normal practice, a composite carbon fibre body using a ground-breaking process new to the motor industry, is used instead of more traditional steel or aluminium. With techniques developed by the UK based SP Group the body panels have the same stiffness as steel but at only 25 percent of the weight, a key requirement for a performance sports car.

On the entry level car, the 4.6-litre engine is mated to a 5 speed Tremec manual transmission with drive to the rear wheels via a BTR limited slip differential. An automatic gearbox will be available early next year on the MG XPower SV.

With leather and Alcantara clad competition seats each customer has a choice of six interior trim colours matched to a wide range of exteriors colours. However a bespoke interior or exterior can be selected via the customisation programme.

With new exterior styling the SV is more aggressive than the original MG X80 prototype with a front splitter, rear diffuser, side vents and a rear wing being available for all cars. This offers the driver the optimum balance of driveability and aerodynamics.

Extensive aerodynamic testing has been carried out in wind tunnels, on the high speed Nardo test track in Southern Italy and the Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit in Germany.

Standard fitment in every car is the latest Tracker system from Omitec which not only enables the car to be located and immobilised, in case of theft for example, but also links the vehicle to a central diagnostic control centre at Longbridge.

Rollover protection on every car is provided by a fully integrated tubular structure and every SV is fitted with unique dual function three point inertia reel racing seatbelts which allow the driver the full mobility of a seatbelt combined with the extra security of a full race harness. The system can be locked at the flick of a switch for more serious driving.

Standard fitment for the MG XPower SV are O.Z. split rim 8J x R18 wheels shod with 225/40 ZR18 tyres at the front and 10J x R18 with 265/40 ZR18 tyres at the rear.

The MG XPower SV-R will sport a new MG designed wheel manufactured by O.Z. The overall effect is a low and aggressive coupe, capable of extremely high performance.
