nevermind
7G-TRONIC can now be operated electronically using a selector level positioned close to the steering wheel, technology which Mercedes-Benz has christened DIRECT SELECT. Additional steering-wheel gearshift buttons, meanwhile, enable the driver to glide manually through the seven gears with the minimum of fuss.

Specifically speaking of the SL, I have been reading that the 06 will definitely be getting some kind of overhaul (engine/exterior, one or both).

Yes. You will see direct injection in the next generation V8s from Mercedes and significantly more power. I am guessing the replacement for the current 302HP V8 engine will make around 50HP more.

Mercedes ML Class AMG News **Brabus ML 63 AMG Widestar Unveiled (page 3)**
AMG tunes next-gen M-Class; ML63 to pack Cayenne-beating power - - GREG KABLE - - Source: Autoweek
Published Date: 3/7/05
Mercedes-Benz isn’t revealing the exact specifications for the AMG-tuned version of its second-generation M-Class, but this official photograph at least gives us an idea of what the future go-fast ML will look like. Shown is an ML350 done up in AMG trim, the same look that will grace the powerful ML63 AMG model due early next year.
The ML63 is rumored to run a new naturally aspirated four-valve-per-cylinder 6.3-liter V8 packing a Porsche Cayenne Turbo-beating 500 hp. Differentiating the AMG model from the standard M-Class that goes on sale this spring are chrome highlights in the grille, a front bumper that incorporates distinctive round fog lamps and additional air ducts with mesh inserts. At the rear are darkened tail lamp lenses, a new bumper and twin chromed exhaust outlets.

You know, during the past year or so, every time I read about the rumored 6.3 liter AMG engine coming in future AMG cars, the rumored output was always stated as "more than 400HP". And every time I thought, "oh it will be a lot higher than 400HP". I mean 500HP from a 6.3 liter "super-tuned" NA engine is totally not out of the question. I can only imagine what the successor of the 65AMG engine will make.

New Merc ML meets, and beats, its rivals - - Source: Autocar
Mercedes M-class off-roader has gone from chronic underachiever to best-in-class - and you can find out how this week. Autocar has introduced Stuttgart's reinvented SUV to the opposition that made its predeccessor look so off the pace; the second-generation Benz 4x4 has proved powerful, refined, practical and agile enough to claim top spot amongst its peers; and you can read about it in this week's magazine.
'The success of Mercedes last ML helped turn the premium off-roader niche into a highly profitable sector,' explains deputy road test editor Alastair Clements, 'but quality issues and dynamic inadequacies fell far short of what we knew the brand could achieve.'
'Mercedes has responded with a car good enough to challenge - and convincingly beat - even the strongest opposition.'

Although this is not a complete comparo/review, I thought it's pretty self explanatory in order to conclude that the first comparo sounds very positive for this new SUV.
